Dave Robinson is a
Moorestown High School alum,
first-round draft pick for the 1963
Green Bay Packers, and now a
pro football Hall of Famer. Robin-
son said he was waiting for his
day to be a part of a team you
could never be cut from.
At 6-feet 3-inches tall and 245-
pounds, the linebacker spent 10
years playing for the Packers. He
retired from the game with the
Washington Redskins in 1974.
Now he is the 22nd Hall of
Famer who played for a number
of years on the Packers.
Robinson is in the Hall with
Green Bay Packers Vince Lom-
bardi, Willie Davis, Earl Curly
Lambeau, Reggie White and
more.
During the Hall of Fame class
of 2013 selection, Robinson said
he wanted to stay under the radar

The Healing Through Art program at the Moorestown Library is every Thursday until March 14. A group of nine recently gathered at
the library to learn about watercolor painting and various relaxation methods that correspond with the activity. Local artists and ed-
ucators, Eileen Caporaso and Jane Kielt, start the class with a relaxing reading. Then they show the group watercolor techniques. Ca-
poraso showed the class a blending method before individual painting began on Jan. 31.

On Saturday, Feb. 16, resi-
dents of Fire District No. 1 will
get the chance to vote for two
fire commissioners to serve a
three-year term. Candidates
Bradley J. Kenney and Charles
Schuster are running uncontest-
ed for the open seats on the
Board of Fire Commissioners.
Residents will also get the
chance to vote on the fire dis-
tricts budget. General expenses
on the budget call for approxi-
mately $1.8 million to be raised
by taxation for general operat-
ing expenses.
According to board chairman
Karl Shelleys letter, this years
budget will see a $747 increase
in total expenditures and an in-
crease of approximately 4.9
cents per $100.
He said voters approved
$100,000 for the purchase of a
new off-road fire vehicle. The
cost of the vehicle is now being
included in this years budget
so the department can use cur-
rent capital funds for the pur-
chase, he said in the announce-
ment.
Polling locations will be open
from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Emer-
gency Service Building located
at 261 West Main Street.

election.

On Wednesday, Feb. 6 a Lum-
berton resident was killed in a
car accident on Route 38.
Moorestown Police said 56-
year-old Helen Patterson was
driving eastbound in a 2013 Mit-
subishi Outlander when the vehi-
cle swerved off the road and
crashed head-on into a utility
pole at around 2 p.m.
The vehicle then traveled 180
feet, rolled onto the driver side,
and the roof of the Outlander
smashed into another utility poll,
crushing the roof of the car and
snapping the utility pole in two,
police said.
PSE&G arrived at the scene to
stabilize the pole, police said.
Patterson was pronounced
dead at the scene and there were
no other occupants in the vehicle,
police said. No other vehicles
were involved in the accident.
Both east-bound lanes on Route
38 were closed until 2:30 p.m.
when one lane was reopened, po-
lice said.
According to police, the cause
of the crash is still under investi-
gation.

O
ral arguments in a lawsuit
brought by professional sports
teams and the NCAA against
Gov. Christie are scheduled to begin
this week. Recently, the leagues got a
boost. The U.S. Department of Justice
is jumping into the lawsuit on their
side.
Yep, your tax dollars are being used
against you.
Lets check the starting lineups.
On one side, you have unbelievably
wealthy sports leagues, the DOJ, illegal
bookies and point-shaving players. OK,
technically the last two arent part of
the lawsuit, but, if the leagues and
DOJ win, they win, too.
On the other side, you have Gov.
Christie, people who want to be able to
bet legally on sports in New Jersey, the
states casinos and horse racing tracks
and, well, everyone who would benefit
from a huge bump to our economy.
Which side are you on?
The suggestion that legalizing sports
betting in New Jersey would lead to an
increase in corruption, law-breaking,
pestilence, whatever, defies logic and
fact. Billions of dollars already are
being bet illegally on games. Players
and officials already have been caught
cheating to win bets.
In fact, the opposite is true. Making
sports betting legal would mean more
oversight of the system by people
both government and those folks actu-
ally taking the bets who want, to coin
a phrase, a level playing field.
It also would be a boost to the casi-
nos, tracks and the economy because
at least some of the money currently
being bet illegally would begin to flow
into legal betting outlets. Anyone seen
recent casino revenue reports? They
need help.
The feds, to coin another phrase, are
backing the wrong horse. New Jersey
needs legal sports betting. Its too bad
the DOJ doesnt see things that way.
in our opinion
Your tax dollars at work
Justice Department joins the ranks of leagues against sports betting in state
Sports betting
That the federal government has
entered a lawsuit to stop New Jerseys
efforts to legalize sports betting is a
slap in the face of every taxpayer here.
Sports betting would be an economic
boost, and in no way would endanger
the integrity of the games.

Unable Records, an independ-
ent record company based in
Maple Shade and operated by
Moorestown resident Mike Ran-
som, is proud to announce the
start of the West from El Paso
Benefit Project.
The project is dedicated to the
memory of Bernard C. Price, fa-
ther of Unable Records opera-
tions manager Amanda Price
Ransom.
On Dec. 7, 2012 Bernie lost his
year-long battle with lung cancer.
He was 65 years old and had never
smoked. When Bernie was sick,
his son-in-law Mike Ransom,
wrote a song for him, as a way of
saying goodbye. After his death,
Unable Records decided to put the
song to good use in Bernies mem-
ory.
West from El Paso is the
debut single from punk band Ran-
som Price, and the cornerstone of
the West from El Paso Benefit
Project. The single was released
on Jan. 1 and all proceeds will be
donated to the Lung Cancer Foun-
dation of America. The song can
be obtained by donating to
the West from El Paso Benefit
Project at www.UnableRecords.
com.
Anyone who donates $1 or
more to the project will receive a
unique code via email to enable
them to download the MP3 for
free. Everyone who donates will
have the opportunity to submit
the name of a loved one or friend
that they would like all of us to re-
member. That person's name will
be added to the "Also in Honor of"
section at UnableRecords.com.
According to the Lung Cancer
Foundation of American, lung
cancer will claim more lives than
breast, prostate, colon, liver, kid-
ney and melanoma cancers. It is
estimated that 60 percent of new
lung cancer diagnoses will be in
non-smokers. Lung cancer re-
search continues to receive just a
tiny fraction of the available
funding.
The benefit single is also avail-
able for purchase through CDBa-
by.com, iTunes, Rhapsody, Spotify,
Amazon, and more. No matter
how the song is purchased all pro-
ceeds go to the Lung Cancer
Foundation of America.
Unable Records begins West
from El Paso Benefit Project
Sheriff Jean Stanfield an-
nounced that her department has
received a new infusion of grant
dollars to assist Burlington Coun-
tys senior citizens in securing
their homes against crime, fire
and power outages.
Stanfield said that the Home
Security Program now is accept-
ing applications to provide sen-
iors and individuals with disabili-
ties free home security surveys
and safety modifications.
Interested residents should call
(609) 265-5796 to register. To quali-
fy, at least one person in the
household must be 60 years of
age or older.
Other security/safety items
that may be installed free of
charge include reflective house
numbers, lamp timers, power fail-
ure lights, and med-info packets
which provide emergency respon-
ders with important medical in-
formation about the residents.
Stanfield said the program has
been in operation for more than
20 years and typically serves 300
homeowners a year.
In addition, the programs
crime prevention specialists are
available to give home security
workshops and presentations to
clubs, churches, and civic and
community groups.
The program is being funded
with $48,992 in pass-through
grant funds, provided by the
countys Office on Aging.

Liz Thomas, co-founder and
CEO of Thomas/Boyd Communi-
cations, has been named chair of
the Samaritan Healthcare & Hos-
pice Board of Trustees effective
Jan. 1, announced Samaritan
President/CEO Mary Ann Boc-
colini.
Thomas joined the all-volun-
teer board in 2008 as vice-chair
and has served as a member of
the executive committee since
2011. She was introduced to Boc-
colini through a business col-
league and became immediately
immersed in numerous aspects of
the non-profit organization that
provides palliative medical serv-
ices and hospice care as well as
geriatric care management and
grief support counseling in
Burlington, Camden, Gloucester,
Mercer and Atlantic counties.
Samaritan has been synony-
mous with quality care since its
founding in 1980 as the first hos-
pice to serve southern New Jer-
sey, said Thomas. Samaritans
recent expansion into non-hos-
pice palliative medicine and sen-
ior consultative services has ex-
tended its
reach into the
community
during a criti-
cal time as our
nation grap-
ples with how
best to meet
all its citizens
healthcare
needs in an ex-
pert, humane
and affordable
way. I am thrilled to be in a leader-
ship position at this time of one
of our regions premier not-for-
profit organizations.
The 2013 board officers serving
with Thomas include vice-chair
Michael Bozek of Oki Data Amer-
icas, Inc; treasurer James Wujcik
of Sovereign Bank/Banco San-
tander; and secretary Roy Fazio
of The Protocall Group.
Thomas and co-founder Pam
Boyd started Thomas/Boyd Com-
munications in 1998. The full-
service public relations and mar-
keting company serves a diverse
client base of business and non-
profit clients.
Thomas named chair of
hospice board of trustees
THOMAS
wasnt planning on making the
trip down to New Orleans.
He said he was going to visit
his wife at the cemetery in Cin-
naminson to celebrate or cry
with her.
She is the one that I really
want to get in the Hall of Fame
for, he said.
Despite his original plan,
Robinson and his son sat in a
hotel room anxiously waiting the
announcement. After the fifth
name was read, he thought he
wasnt in.
Robinsons superstitious na-
ture that held him back from talk-
ing about the possibility of being
inducted was gone when the next
name was called. Robinson said
he was the sixth name on the list.
When he was reading the
names off I didnt even pay atten-
tion, said Robinson. He was
reading the names off and I was
counting.
When the fifth name was read,
Robinson said he was a little de-
pressed.
I was very depressed and the
next name called was Dave Robin-
son, he said, adding he went
from depression to the heights of
ecstasy.
He said over the loud cheering,
his son snuck into the other area
of their hotel room and grabbed a
bottle of champagne.
I am not a big fan of cham-
pagne, but that was the best glass
of champagne I had in my life,
he said.
During his high school years,
Robinson was a four-sport athlete.
When he graduated from high
school, he moved on to play at
Penn State.
According to Penn State Ath-
letics website, Robinson led Penn
State to a regular season of 9-1 in
1962 with 17 receptions for 178
yard. He was also inducted into
the National Football Foundation
College Football Hall of Fame in
1997.
But his skills on the football
field were not what drove Robin-
son to go to college.
He said his athletic abilities
were not the main reason for re-
ceiving a full scholarship to Penn
State.
[I received] a full scholarship
based on economic need, he said.
Robinson was a good football
player with good grades. Howev-
er 12 years in the NFL was longer
than planned, he said.
The uncommon practice of
drafting a black player in the first
round, took Robinson to the next
level of his football career, even if
he wasnt planning on playing
professionally.
I wanted to go to college for a
decent job. Thats the only rea-
son, Robinson said, adding his
love for the game kept him going.
Before his induction in the Pro
Hall of Fame, Robinson said he
discussed everything with his
wife who passed in 2007.
Originally, he planned to play
only five years in the NFL, but in
1967 the Packers won the Super
Bowl over the Kansas City Chiefs,
35-10, and again in 1968 against
the Oakland Raiders, 33-14. Green
Bay also won three NFL titles
from 1965 to 1967.
Robinson hoped to get into the
Hall of Fame for his wife, and he
did.
Robinson stood in the Mer-
cedes-Benz Superdome in New
Orleans at Super Bowl XLVII. His
name was called with other in-
ductees on Saturday, Feb. 2, and
his bust will be in the Pro Foot-
ball Hall of Fame for more than a
lifetime.
I am looking forward to it. The
Hall of Fame is everlasting, he
said.
Robinson said he is looking for-
ward to his bust being at the Hall
of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
He said he hopes his grandchil-
dren, great-grandchildren and fu-
ture generations will see his bust
and learn about his accomplish-
ments.
In the year 2100 someone can
walk into the Hall of Fame, he
said, adding his face will be on
that wall for all to see.
You live forever in the hall of
fame. You are immortalized,
Robinson said.
