DATRAN ll eXcel DNP3 RTU Installation / Configuration Guide - v1.2 - Jan 2011

2. Introduction
The DATRAN ll eXcel DNP3 RTU is amongst the most compact and fully featured RTUs available. The DNP3 Slave Communications Protocol implemented in the RTU affords versatility allowing the RTU to be connected to any SCADA/Master Station operating the DNP3 Master communication protocol. This guide provides details of the configuration and set up of the RTU and its various communications ports. This document should be read in conjunction with the following documents: DATRAN ll eXcel DNP3 Quick start guide DNP3 Device Profile Q03 Manual Q22 Manual

3. Power Supply
The RTU comes factory shipped configured for a nominal 12 V DC supply connection unless otherwise requested. When configured this way, the RTU will automatically shut itself down when the supply voltage drops to 10.5 Volts. If the RTU is to be supplied from 24 V it is necessary to change J27, located on the Q22 (bottom board) in the unit, to change the low voltage shutdown voltage to 21 Volts. 3.1 Power Supply Connections

The eXcel power connector has three connections labeled G, + and C. G = Power Supply Negative + = Power Supply Positive (12 V 30 V DC) C = Control Signal Output from the eXcel that allows the eXcel to turn peripheral devices off and on when it is powered up and down itself.
The C terminal is an OUTPUT. Do not connect it to the supply. The Q03 and associated peripherals should all share a common earth point.

4. Digital Inputs
The RTU digital inputs are designed to interface easily with physical switching devices. They have an internal pull-up resistor that will pull the input terminal to the power supply + when the input is open circuit (the OFF state). To turn a digital input ON, connect it (via a set of contacts if necessary) to the common G terminal on the Digital Input terminal block. All G terminals on the eXcel are tied internally to the G terminal on the power supply connector. The LED associated with each digital input will light up when the input is Active/On/Closed.
The pull up / pull down convention is different from some PLCs. If required, the active state of I/O can be inverted in the eXcel control program or PLC

5. Digital Outputs
As with the Digital Inputs, the eXcel Digital Outputs are designed to be easily interfaced with relays and contactors. The eXcel has 8 Digital Outputs in total. The first four are located on the front panel adjacent to the Digital Inputs and have LED indicators to show if the output is active or not. The second four Digital Outputs are located on the underside of the RTU next to the power connector, labeled Aux Out.
+ Supply

RTU

The Digital Outputs work as Current Sinks. This means that when they are turned on, they will be connected to power supply ground, allowing current to flow into the output terminal to ground. When in the OFF state, they have a high impedance to ground and will float up to + Supply. To use a digital output with a relay, wire as shown in the diagram.

6. Analog Inputs
The eXcel has 6 analog channels. All analog channels are independently capable of operation as either 0-20mA, 4-20mA, 0-5V or 0-10V. In addition to this, channels 5 and 6 are independently able to be configured as either inputs or outputs. The eXcel comes factory shipped with all analog channels configured as 4-20mA inputs. For details on how to reconfigure them, refer to the DATRAN II eXcel Users Guide. For all analog inputs, the current return path is via the ground of the eXcel power supply. It is important to understand the implications of this when wiring certain analog devices to the RTU, as detailed below. The LEDs adjacent to each Analog Input show the status of the signal the eXcel is receiving. If the LED is off, it means the input signal is zero, or underrange. When the LED is on, it indicates the signal is within the measuring range that the input has been configured for. If the LED is flashing, it shows the signal is over-range.

6.1 Loop Powered Devices

Loop-Powered, or 2-Wire devices derive their power supply from the current flowing in the loop itself. It is important to make sure that any device is rated to operate at the voltage that will be available to it taking into account that the eXcel Analog Input will drop 5V across it at + 20mA loop current. RTU Tx For example: If the system is being powered from Anl In 1 13.7VDC, the analog transducer will only have a maximum of 8.7 volts available to it for its power supply. To wire a 2-Wire device, refer to the diagram. www.qtech.co.nz Tel: 03 3663713

6.2 Separately Supplied Devices

Separately Supplied, or 4-Wire devices are analog RTU transmitters that have a separate power supply from the analog signal loop. If suitable, these devices can be powered from the eXcel power supply. If the eXcel power Anl In 1 supply is not suitable, the analog sensor can be powered G from a separate power supply as long as the grounds of both the eXcel and the other power supply are connected together. Wiring of a 4-Wire device is as shown:

7. Serial Ports and Communication Options

The DATRAN ll eXcel DNP3 RTU is delivered, as standard, with two RS232 serial ports. An upper and lower port, the upper port supports full flow control with the hardware control signals and the lower port has limited flow control. Upper

Lower Both of the serial ports may be used for main channel communications but only one should be set for DNP3 operation. We recommend the use of the upper port for the DNP3 communications channel, by default the upper RS232 port will be configured at 9600 baud with no parity. Depending on the communications device to be used, a custom interface cable may be required. The following are the serial port RJ45 connector pin outs. Upper serial port signal lines: RJ45 8. RI 7. DCD 6. Tx 5. Rx 4. GND 3. CTS 2. RTS 1. DTR Lower serial port signal lines: RJ45 8. RI 7. DCD 6. Tx 5. Rx 4. GND 3. CTS 2. RTS 1. DTR www.qtech.co.nz Tel: 03 3663713

7.1 Radio Options

Both RS232 port support the standard comms port configuration of baud rate and parity, thus being able to connect directly to a radio device with a serial port. Conventional UHF / VHF radios like the Tait TM81XX range or the Maxon SD171 range that have an on board serial interface may be connected directly with a suitable interface cable. Where greater control of the serial interface is required to effect transmitter keying, the upper serial port should be used. This port allows configuration of the flow control modes i.e. the selection of RTS/CTS control or RTS Delay control. Digital radios like the Radata T96SR may be configured for use of these settings when enabling them on the radio network. These settings are managed via the software configuration tool Q90 as will be seen in the following section. In both of the above cases the port Device Type is set as DNP3 Slave.

7.2 TCP/IP Options

The DATRAN ll eXcel DNP3 RTU may be used on an Ethernet / TCP connection. An adapter is available, the DATRAN Q53 Ethernet interface, this is a serial to UTP convertor. The DATRAN II eXcel DNP3 RTU has built in configuration for use of this port. The configuration allows for a Device Type DNP3 TCP Slave, this is only available if the RTU has been configured to connect to a Q53 module (this setting is a QTech enabled option so call if required). When the DNP3 TCP Slave is selected, Q90 allows the IP Address of the Q53 to be set. This functionality may not be required with other third party Serial to Ethernet convertor options.
