The Humanity of Jesus Christ

Mat 26:36 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.
Jesus did not want to be alone before his crucifixion.

Luk 22:41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,
But when he went to pray, he did separate himself as far as we could throw a stone.

Mat 26:37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. Mat 26:38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.
Jesus was going through a great mind battle. His heart was desperately weighed down with it. There was something he did not want to face. I do not believe that he feared the pain and suffering. I do not believe he feared death. Jesus was a brave and courageous man. He was also God. It was something that, in his mind, was far worse than the torture that man would inflict on him.

Mat 26:39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
He asked his father to not have to face it. He asked to be spared this grief.

Luk 22:42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
He was willing to go through with it anyway. He was not ignorant of the price he would have to pay, a price that we do not truly understand but see recorded on the pages of history.

Luk 22:43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. Luk 22:44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
His acceptance that he must did not make it any easier. In the extremity of his grief and agony of spirit, the blood vessels in his face burst and blood began pouring from his skin. This was the first of his blood shed for us, a willing sacrifice before men came and took the rest by force.

Mat 26:42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.
And he did drink, in full measure.

Luk 22:63 And the men, the ones holding Jesus prisoner, began ridiculing Him, repeatedly beating [Him]. Luk 22:64 And having blindfolded Him, they kept striking Him on the face and kept questioning Him, saying, "Prophesy, who is the one having struck You?"
He was cruelly beaten by the people.

Mat 27:26 Then he released to them Barabbas. Then after having Jesus beaten with a whip, he handed [Him] over so that He should be crucified. Mat 27:27 Then the soldiers of the governor, having taken Jesus into the Fortified Palace [or, Praetorium], gathered the entire garrison around Him. Mat 27:30 And having spit on Him, they took the reed and began beating [Him] on His head.
He was beaten by the soldiers.

Joh 20:25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
He had spikes driven through his hands.

Luk 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
But Jesus did not fear becoming bitter. In fact, he freely forgave them as they were crucifying him.

Isa 53:7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

In all that Jesus went through and suffered, he did not cry out or question. He did not complain to his tormentors.

Mat 26:63 But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
Jesus did not try to defend himself to the people or the religious leaders. But there was one time when Jesus did cry out. There was one person that Jesus did question.

Mat 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Jesus in his grief and despair cried out and questioned God the Father.

Mat 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
To accuse someone who questions God in the midst of trials is to accuse Jesus Christ himself, for he did the same. Do you feel forsaken? Do you feel betrayed? Do you carry grief? Do you feel that you carry a burden all alone? Do you cry out to God and ask him why? Do you feel the shame of others questioning your faith and trust? Jesus understands. He too cried out in grief and uncertainty. He too has questioned God. God loves you. He understands your fear and questioning. He himself has been there. He does not despise you in your hour of need. He loves you.

Joh 19:34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
Jesus knows what it is like to have a broken heart.

Luk 23:39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. Luk 23:40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?

Luk 23:41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. Luk 23:42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. Luk 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
Even from the cross, Jesus reaches out in love to the guilty and condemned. Do you feel condemned for your humanity? Then let Jesus help you. He does not reject you or despise you when you need him the most. When you are in Christ Jesus, your life becomes one of Spirit. Your spirit becomes full of life.

Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Mat 11:28 Come to me, all you who are troubled and weighted down with care, and I will give you rest. By Brian Jones
