Scouts host annual Pinewood Derby
By KRISTEN DOWD
The Moorestown Sun
Not all racecars rely on horse-
power, as anyone attending the
Pinewood Derby on Saturday, Feb.
9, could attest. Sometimes, the
only power racecars need is grav-
ity.
The annual event at First Unit-
ed Methodist Church is hosted by
Cub Scout Pack No. 44, which is
comprised of five dens (Tigers,
Wolves, Bears, Webelos I and We-
belos II) based on grade level,
from first through fifth grades.
Beyond fifth grade, the Cub
Scouts graduate to Boy Scouts.
While the Pinewood Derby is ex-
clusively for the younger Scouts,
a few older mentors were on hand
to help out.
The Boy Scouts of America
Pinewood Derby began in 1953
thats 60 years of gravity-powered
car racing and in Moorestown,
the Scouts have been participat-
ing nearly as long. According to
Dick Borton, Pack No. 44 commit-
tee chairman, local troops date
back to the 50s, too. He said the
derby is a great learning experi-
ence.
Its the biggest event of the
year, Borton said. It helps them
learn to do things for them-
selves.
Scouts emphasize working
with family, according to Borton,
and the Pinewood Derby is per-
fect for this task. While the Scouts
are planning and creating their
cars mostly on their own, they do
rely on guidance and help from
adults, too.
The pint-sized competitors
start out with a block of wood,
four wheels and four nails. From
here, plans diverge, with cars
turning into Batmobiles, camou-
flaged army tanks and more.
Everyone starts out with the
same piece of wood, four axels
and four wheels. What you do
from there is up to you, Cubmas-
ter Ken Keegan said. It is a great
bonding experience for the par-
ents and children. In other kids
activities, like sports, so much is
based on individual ability. Here,
everyone is equal in the begin-
ning. You just have to get those
five ounces down the track in the
fastest time.
On the Friday night before the
event, adult volunteers set up for
the derby, assembling the track
with its electronic gate and figur-
ing out the logistics for the new
laptop and projector screen,
which broadcast upcoming heats
and the resulting winners. Of
course, even the large screen
couldnt keep the eager Cub
Scouts in their seats on Saturday,

Tim Ronaldson, an eight-year
veteran of Elauwit, has been
named executive editor of
Elauwit Media, parent company
of The Sun newspapers.
He replaces Alan Bauer, one of
the founders of Elauwit Media,
who has been editor and general
manager since 2004.
Ronaldson recently has served
Elauwit Media as director of digi-
tal media. He now will lead The
Suns news department.
Alan is the most versatile
newsman Ive ever met, said Dan
McDonough, Jr., a co-founder of
Elauwit Media and the compa-
nys current chairman of the
board. Beyond that, hes been a
great business partner, too. His
fingerprints will long last on this
organization we built together,
and thats a great thing.
Ronaldson joined Elauwit
Media in March 2005 as The Suns
first managing editor.
He ascended the ranks as the
company grew larger, from one
weekly newspaper in Haddon-
field to a combined 14 in the
South Jersey and Central Jersey
markets.
Tim has the Elauwit spirit at
his core, McDonough said. Im
excited to see how he will leave
his mark while continuing our
tradition of being the go-to news
source for our readers.
Ronaldson also has served as
associate publisher for Elauwit
business publications in South
Carolina, and has worked for
Elauwits Networks division,
based in Columbia, S.C.
Im honored and humbled to
be named Executive Editor, and
am very excited about helping to
move this company forward,
Ronaldson said.
I thank Alan for his training,
leadership and support.
Ronaldson said he plans to
build off the solid community
news foundation that Bauer cre-
ated at The Suns, while focusing
on key areas that are necessary
for future success in the industry
such as a focus on online and
mobile content.

The Moorestown Sun
Appraisal Systems Inc. recent-
ly released the townships re-
assessment results, showing the
value of Moorestown property
has dropped by more than $800
million since the townships
revaluation in 2007.
When the township performed
the last revaluation, the numbers
were determined at the peak of
the housing market, the town-
ships tax assessor Dennis DeK-
lerk reported in September.
ASIs results for 2013 show the
townships ratables at approxi-
mately $3.9 billion.
ASI, which also performed the
revaluation in 2007, reported the
townships estimated values for
2012 to be approximately $4.6 bil-
lion.
DeKlerk said a reassessment
uses previously constructed data
to determine values, while a
revaluations data is constructed
from scratch.
To save the township from cut-
ting into the reserve of uncollect-
ed taxes, the township decided it
was time to perform a reassess-
ment.
According to DeKlerk, when a
resident filed for a tax appeal,
they had a good case, and the
township does not collect money
on the loss.
The 2007 revaluation was estab-
lished for 2008 taxes. Since then,
the township has lost $4,433,822 in
tax appeals, the townships finan-
cial officer Tom Merchel said.
We expect to stop losing at
least $600,000 to $800,000 per year,
and, starting in 2014, we should
be able to save approximately

I
f you sit on a school board or mu-
nicipal governing body, youre en-
tering the part of the year that
probably causes you the most
headaches. Its budget time. Its time to
do the impossible: provide outstanding
service for little or no money.
A few years ago, Gov. Christie made
headlines and more than a few ene-
mies when he slashed state funding
and eventually added a 2 percent cap
on tax hikes.
Since then, at least some of the
money has returned. Later this month,
the governor will release state funding
figures for this year.
But its safe to say that no district or
town will find itself rolling in dough.
Governing bodies will continue to face
decisions that involve reducing or
holding the line on services and/or
raising taxes.
One bright spot some would say
the only bright spot to come of this is
that many governing bodies these days
have made the budget process open to
the public. Transparent is the watch-
word today.
Its a smart move to involve the pub-
lic everyone from those who want to
cut taxes to the bone to those who
would like to see expanded services.
When the public is invited in, they
not only see the difficult choices lead-
ers have to make, but they also feel like
they have a voice. Leaders are listening
to them. Their input is valued. While
not everyone will be happy with every
decision, at least there is a sense of in-
clusion and ownership of the
process.
We encourage everyone to get in-
volved with their local budget process-
es this year. In most instances, there
will be hearings. Items will be posted
online. Its easy to offer your sugges-
tions to the people who eventually will
make the final decision.
And, chances are, your feedback will
be appreciated.
in our opinion
Budget time
Its that time of year again when tough decisions have to be made
Get involved
Think taxes are too high? Think servic-
es have been cut too deeply? Now is
the time to make your voice heard. Its
budget season, and most local govern-
ing bodies have ways to involve the
public in the decision-making process.
So speak up before the final votes are
counted.
letter to the editor
MHS vocal program deserves
praise and recognition
Recently we attended Moorestown High
School Vocal Pops Concert. We are always
amazed by and appreciative of the talent
and effort involved in these productions.
Ms. Kristen Konrad, director of three
choral groups, works with more than 150
students. The selection of songs and the
arrangements are noteworthy, and the cho-
reography of the pieces adds a kinetic ele-
ment on stage.
The students who make this happen are
not only talented, with wonderful varying
styles and ranges, but imagine how many
hours of practice, and the self-discipline
and motivation that is involved. Kudos to
these young people, who are engaged in
many activities, as well as studies, for con-
tributing positively to their school and
community.
The vocal program at MHS, and proba-
bly others, deserves praise and recogni-
tion.

with plenty of the boys standing,
leaning and craning their necks
to catch a glimpse of the small
wooden cars flying down the
track.
There are trophies for each den
division and grand finale win-
ners, as well as a Cubmaster
Award and award for coolest car,
which is voted on by the Cub
Scouts. Jackson Sheppard
brought home the Cubmaster
Award. Christopher Roberts Bat-
mobile was deemed coolest car.
While the allure of winning a
trophy is a driving factor behind
the boys enthusiasm for the
Pinewood Derby, the kids had var-
ious reasons for coming out to the
event.
Its fun to see all the cars
how theyre the same and how
theyre different, Callum Keegan
said.
The 9-year-old brought home
den division trophies his first two
years in the derby. This year, he
snagged the overall grand prize
with his car, Killer Cal.
Christian Mammarella raced
Big M this year, his third year in
the competition. And for this 10-
year-old, consistency is key he
said he keeps his vehicle the same
every year.
I pick the same design. I put
the weight in the same place,
Christian said.
Christian won his den division
two years ago and was hoping to
bring home a trophy this year.
Winning, however, wasnt his fa-
vorite part of the derby.
Its fun and I get to see my
buddies, he said, smiling at one
of those buddies, Ethan Sza-
wlewicz.
Ethan competed with Super-
bird a name he chose on the fly
and put a lot of research into his
final design. He knew he wanted a
car with the right weight and a
flattish surface. When he scout-
ed out a design with both, he
knew he had his vehicle.
I saw a design that looked
aerodynamic enough, Ethan
said, and had a good place to put
the weights.
The research paid off. Ethan
won first place for his den and
sixth place overall.
Spencer Talbot and Alex Sza-
wlewicz, both 9, are also derby
veterans. The Scouts competed
with Grey Lightning and Captain
America, respectively.
Choosing a favorite part of the
derby was a toss up for Spencer.
Its between making the car,
he said, and seeing what place it
gets.
Not for me. I just came in last
again, added Alex, watching his
red, white and blue vehicle speed
by. However, not placing didnt
hamper Alexs spirits, especially
since his favorite part is making
the car. Its really fun.
Janet DAngelo, assistant
leader for Den 5 with leader (and
husband) Christian, said she
was happy with the events
turnout.
Its kind of old school, she
said. They work on their cars,
and they get to see the fruits of
their labor.
As a den, DAngelos Scouts see
each other two or three times a
month. They care for each other,
she said, and root for each other
at the derby.
They want to win personally,
she said, but they also want each
other to do well.

Skip the hassle. Just get paid.
$500,000 in the budget, Merchel
said.
But many residents are con-
cerned the reassessment did
more harm than good.
Township manager Scott
Carew said some residents taxes
went up, and some went down.
According to Carew, approxi-
mately 58 percent of residents
will witness a decrease in their
taxes. Of the 58 percent, approxi-
mately 12 percent will see a de-
crease of $250 or less. Approxi-
mately 46 percent will see an in-
crease, and out of that, approxi-
mately 12 percent will see an in-
crease of $250 or less.
Carew said the idea behind per-
forming the reassessment is to
try to get all property values in
town based on current market
positions.
Merchel said if a residents
property value is less than the
townships average value, the
township still has to collect the
same value in township-wide
taxes.
As far as the reassessment
goes, the values are still not final-
ized yet, Merchel said.
The final numbers were due for
submission on Feb. 15. Before that
time, numbers are continually
changing, Merchel said, but the
township will see future savings.
Merchel: Reassessment
values not yet finalized
