Last Sunday I completed my Live Love series with a message on honor. I offered three simple and practical ways that we can love and honor one another: Listening, Kindness and Generosity. Listening Though not always easy in todays culture, truly listening is a profoundly simple and effective way to communicate to someone that you care and value them. I identified four levels of listening, only the fourth level describes listening with love. 1. non-Listening Someone is speaking but youre not hearing a word theyre saying. Think of the Charlie Brown cartoons when an adult or teacher is speaking all you hear is Wa-wa, wa-wa, wa-wa, wa. 2. surface Listening Its not much better than non-listening. We offer gratuitous head nods and an occasional Mm-huh. It gives the appearance of listening without actually listening. 3. On Ramp Listening This is listening only for an opportunity to speak; either to agree, disagree, contradict or one up the person speaking. 4. no strings Attached Listening We listen for the sake of the person speaking. We offer our full undivided attention. We offer commentary or ask questions that keeps the focus on them and allows them to keep the floor. This type of listening honors the speaker and is a very practical way to live love. Eighty percent of the pastoral counseling I offer is No Strings Attached Listening. Most people know what to do; they just need someone to listen as they process verbally. ...continued on page 2

Kindness Random acts of kindness are a wonderful way to live love in our community. It can be as simple as holding a door open for someone, being patient with a trainee, picking up the tab for a stranger at Tims or bringing a sick friend a warm home cooked meal.Your act of kindness with brighten their day and yours as well. Being geneROus with YOuR time Even more than money, time seems to be our most precious commodity. Everyone I know is busier, make that much busier than theyd like to be. Intentionally dedicating chunks of time to the most important people in our lives is a wonderful way to practically live love. In my humble opinion, our spouses and our children are a very good place to start. My hope and prayer is that Charlottetown Community Church would have a reputation of love. That we would be known as a safe place for broken and wounded people, a place that wholeheartedly welcomes and loves all. Live Loved, Tom
When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares. -Henri J.M. Nouwen, The Road to Daybreak: A Spiritual Journey
