Botanical Gardens of the University of Vienna In the 18th century, the botanist and director of the Botanical Gardens, Nikolaus Joseph Baron of Jacquin brought numerous plants from West India to Austria, and was the first to describe many of them. Orchids such as Epidendrum elongatum and Epidendrum diurna are on display, as are other types of plants named by him. Linz City Parks Botanical Gardens Of the great variety of orchids housed by the gardens, it is mainly wild species from South America with are presented, complemented by accompanying species such as tillandsia and insectivors. A luxuriant, splendid sea of flowers throughout the whole year, a park with a stock of trees over 150 years old, the baroque magnificence of the castle complex and church, plus the Mediterranean character that is Mainau, the flower island in Lake Constance. The orchid show held between the end of March and the start of May in the greenhouse of the flower island is considered one of the most significant shows in Europe. The around 3,000 specimens also contain rare wild forms and valuable rarities.

New! Botanical Gardens Leiden The Hortus botanicus Leiden, founded in 1590, is the oldest botanical gardens in The Netherlands, and has been an institute of the University of Leiden since then. In addition to teaching and being open to the public, research is the third pillar which has been important ever since the foundation of the Hortus. The orchid collection of the gardens is internationally renowned, and rare species are still collected and described, especially in New Guinea. A special find is the recently described Bulbophyllum nocturnum, the only species of orchid whose flowers unfold at night.
