Junior News
It is great to see all the happy faces keen to be back at school and ready to learn. In the Juniors we have been looking at Kindness. As you visit each class room you can see different ways each class is looking at kindness. Our big question is How is Kindness Valuable?. We are learning to be kind to ourselves, our classmates, friends and family and to our environment. Some classes have looked at the Treaty of Waitangi and what this means to our own class treaty. What a fun time we had on Friday when the Kelly Sports team ran a fun introduction to their programme. Rooms 11,9 and 10 are excited about visiting the Marae while Rooms 8 and 12 are having a Teddy bears picnic on Friday. Thank you to all parents who came to the meet the teacher night we now look forward to seeing you at our parent interviews on the 5th, 6th and 7th of March. Reminder that we all need a sunhat in our tote tray or bag and a drink bottle lled with water each day please. PMP has begun and we always like your help, thank you to the loyal parents who support this programme.

Middle News
There are many people in different places who are kind and are keen to help others. Wed like to find out more about some of these people who make a difference. Wed love to hear of any people you know of who are in the business of helping others and who might be able to come and share their stories with share their stories with any of the classes in our syndicate. Some groups of children might even of children might even be able to go and visit them at their work. Kiwi sports sessions with Otago Girls students have begun with 2 classes in the middle syndicate. We look forward to working with them over the next couple of weeks. We are keen to try new things and this was evident in our visit to the Marae on Wednesday. Most of us would admit that we were nervous and excited at the same time!

Senior News The senior classes have all settled well and have been busy enjoying renewing old friendships, and making new ones. Our topic, the Treaty of Waitangi, was analysed using our school values of Kindness, Aspiration, Independence and Keenness. It was interesting to see how our own values could also apply to the Treaty. The children impressed during this study with their efforts in co-operative learning, and their skills in collaborative negotiation. This was particularly evident in developing our class treaties too. Last week we had a very enjoyable day at Nairn Street Park for Junior Neighbourhood Support. It was made all the better for being with our whanau groups. The older children are great at helping younger children, showing kindness and a willingness to get involved in different activities. All classes have begun our Maths programmes with a unit on Statistics. We are learning to ask useful questions for investigation, gather information using tally charts, and present this information in a graph. Our focus for this study varies in each class, but includes a Census using data from our own classes and the wider school community. Children are learning to select appropriate forms of graphing presentations to make it easier to read the information.

Purple Cake Day Kaikorai Primary School is celebrating Purple Cake Day on Friday March 8.
What is Purple Cake Day? It is a charity event run by the Kenbe La Foundation Charitable Trust, which was established in 2010 in response to the devastating Haiti earthquake. What does the Kenbe La Foundation do? It has helped raise money for children in Haiti and Nepal. This year it is helping children in Kenya to get an education. Children in Kenya face enormous difculties in getting an education. Why is Kaikorai Primary School involved? We like the idea of kids helping kids through celebration, education and fundraising. It ts with our idea of kindness and caring about others who are less fortunate than us. We think we can help make a difference. What exactly are we going to do? 1. Get into the purple spirit and make the school purple wear purple clothes, paint a purple nger, have balloons, ags, streamers 2. Have blanket sales to raise money. This means that many children are planning to have a sale and sell things to other children. 3. Bake and sell purple cakes and other food. 4. Do jobs at home to earn money to spend at Purple Cake Day Where to get more ideas? Keep an eye on the foyers outside room 2 and 2a, and rooms 4 and 6. Displays with ideas of things to do will be developing over the next couple of weeks.
