To Close or Not to Close -
ShopRite Has the Answer

W
ill the ShopRite
close or will it
remain open?
That is the big question for
Netcong residents. The
problem is that the super-
market, which has been a
town landmark business for
decades, is built on land
which may be sold out from
under it. Rumors abound
that the 2.4 acre site has
been put up for sale by
PECD Realty, the current
owner of the property and
the store may be closed as
early as June of this year.
According to published
reports in The Daily Record,
the property was assessed at
$2,761,500.00.
However, in a recent
interview, a Ronetco
spokesperson told us that
there are no plans to close
the supermarket either now
or in the foreseeable future.
In fact the company has
recently purchased the land
adjacent to the site with an
eye to the future. PECD
Realty no longer owns the
property in question and
hasn’t in a year, according
to Ronetco. The land is
currently owned by an LLC
with a direct connection to
Ronetco principals.
DOT widening of Route
46 has been anticipated and
is being planned for, and the
spokesperson has indicated
that they are looking for-
ward to doing their part in
Netcong’s redevelopment
plans. Ronetco currently
operates seven ShopRite
supermarkets in Northwest
New Jersey.
Part of the redevelop-
ment includes a re-envision-
ing of the town center and
building residential units
near the ShopRite which
would bring as many as 500
people into the area.
According to reports in

New Jersey Ballet Performs
at Sussex County
Community College
O
n Saturday February 28, New Jersey Ballet
Company will perform for the first time at the
beautiful new theater at Sussex County Community
College. The program, “Highlights of Tchaikovsky's Three
Great Ballets,” will include excerpts from Swan Lake,
Sleeping Beauty and Nutcracker.
Swan Lake (1876) is not only Tchaikovsky's first ballet,
but is also the first ballet to be set to a score by a symphon-
ic composer. The story is about an enchanted Swan Queen,
a Prince who loves her and a wicked sorcerer, Von
Rothbart, who schemes to keep them apart. The corps de
ballet beautifully mimics graceful swans.
Thirteen years later, Tchaikovsky wrote Sleeping
Beauty. The quintessential classical ballet, it teems with
high drama, tender romance and familiar storybook charac-
ters such as Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots and the Blue
Bird. New Jersey Ballet Company's production was staged
by former American Ballet Theatre principal Eleanor
D'Antuano. The February 28 program includes the Rose
Adagio, a challenge to the world's most accomplished bal-
lerinas and the Garland Dance.
Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker premiered in 1892 and has
become a cherished holiday tradition for ballet fans and
families. New Jersey Ballet Company's production debuted
at Paper Mill Playhouse in 1971 with New York City Ballet
superstar Edward Villella in the role of the Cavalier. The
production tours the state each year and has also traveled as
far away as Mumbai, India where it was the first full-length
classical ballet ever performed in the country.

Local Eye Doctor Helps Kids See

A
year and a half ago, Dr. Brelvi had
a vision, and due to that vision 200
children have received the gift of
clear sight through the KidSEE 20/20
Vision Program. School age children
throughout Morris, Sussex and Warren
Counties are referred to Dr. Brelvi by their
school nurses, administrators, or family
members who are existing patients at the
Wal-Mart Vision Center located in Mount
Olive.
This unique vision program was founded
in May, 2007 by Brelvi. The mission is to
ensure that all school children under the age
of 15 have access to affordable eye exams

Vision Program is his well thought out
response to addressing this “provider gap”
in our health care system.
Officially launched by Brelvi with his
eye care team at the Wal-Mart Vision Center
in Mount Olive, this initiative allows all
children from ages 5 through 15 to receive a
thorough eye exam for a nominal fee. The
team feels that clear vision in young school
children should be treated as an urgent pri-
ority and should be addressed by not just the
parents but by the entire community.
Brelvi reflects on many heartwarming
stories but one in particular is the young boy
rushing into his office brandishing a sports
trophy broadcasting to the vision team
“look, look I won a trophy in a soccer
match; these glasses are great and make me
play better”. The goal is to make parents,
school and health administrators aware of
the vision program. Brelvi and his team
look forward to examining at least 500 chil-
dren by 2010.

Mocha Brownies Preheat oven to 350°F.

Makes about 16 brownies
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
5 ounces unsweetened chocolate, coarsely
chopped
Spray 13 x 9 inch oblong
2 cups granulated sugar cake pan with vegetable pan
1 tablespoon instant coffee granules spray.
4 eggs In small bowl, combine
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract flour and salt. In large

Luigi is Trying Hard to Like Obama - Honest
I
am glad to have found another home for
my writings or as some might say my
rantings.
I have been writing a column for well
over 15 years and have been in many differ-
ent papers. People almost always try to con-
tact the paper to talk with me. With today’s
technology I write and email articles so I
am not physically at any location. It will be
the same with this paper. I will be writing
my columns and posting them on my web-
site www.listetoluigi.com monthly and I
hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoy
writing them.
A lot has gone on since my last writings
and I have a lot to say.
Let’s start with be blessed Inauguration
of the new anointed one of the United States
- Barack Hussein Obama. The first thing I
noticed was that you could not mention his
middle name before the election. But once
he was sworn in most papers now use his
middle name. That ticked me off immedi-
ately.
Then all I kept hearing, and still hear, is
that he is the first African American presi-
dent. Well people seem to forget that he is
really our first inter-racial president. He
seems to conveniently forget that he is half
white. But as one commentator put it the
Democrats could not market him (for lack
of better terms) as an inter-racial candidate
they needed to market him as an African
American.
I give Obama a lot of credit on his win
and campaign, but he is not the savior of our
country. The jury is out on what exactly he
will do but as early indications show it is
not good.
I really want to give him a chance. I real-
ly want to see him do well and turn this
country around. But there is just something
about him that literally eats away in my gut
when I see him, and listen to his vision for
America.
So far as all politicians go he will not be
able to deliver what he promised. He
already stated that it will take longer than he
thought and that he might not get to do what
he promised for a couple of years.
His first days in office he signed execu-
tive orders that will hurt us more than help
us.
Now given that he is our commander and
chief shouldn’t he know what he is signing
and how it works? Here is the transcript
from his signing the orders.
OBAMA: In order to effect the appropri-
ate disposition of individuals currently
detained by the Department of Defense at
Guantanamo, uh, and promptly to close the
detention facility at Guantanamo consistent
with the national security and foreign poli-
cy interests of the United States and inter-
ests of justice, I hereby order. And we then
we will then, uh, provide the process where-
by Guantanamo will be closed no later than,
uh, one year from now. We will be...
Uhhh.... Ummm.... Is there a separate exec-
utive order, Greg, with respect to how we're
going to dispose of the detainees? Is that it,
eh, uh, what we're doing?
CRAIG (his attorney): We'll set up a
process!
OBAMA: We will be, uh, setting up a
process whereby this is going to be taking
place.OBAMA: What we're doing here is to
set up a special interagency task force on
detainee disposition. They are going to
provide me with information in terms of
how we are able to deal in the disposition of
some of the detainees that may be currently
in Guantanamo that we cannot transfer to
other countries, who could pose a serious
danger to the United States, uh, but, uh, we
cannot try because of various problems
related to evidence, uh, in a Article 3 court.
So this task force is going to provide us
with, uh, a series of recommendations on,
uh, that. Is that correct, Greg?

CRAIG (his attorney): That’s right.
And detainee policy going forward.
OBAMA: And detainee policy going
forward so that we don't find ourselves in
these kinds of situations, uh, in the future.
CRAIG (his attorney): And there is
clear guidance for the military as well.
OBAMA: And that we are providing clear
guidance to our military in terms of having
to do with it.
You might ask what is wrong with this.
He is asking the attorney on what to do or
how it works! This is OK for a president of
a business or organization but not for the
president of the United States.
Two executive orders in a row and he
doesn't know what's in them. He had to turn
to Craig who tells Obama and Obama
repeats it as though nobody can hear it.
Being Obama was the editor of the Harvard
Law Review isn’t he supposed to be
smarter than Greg Craig?
Obama also doesn’t want to use the term
War on Terror. He said we need to mend the
fences with the Muslim community so we
should basically not use these types of
terms. I can see some poor American when

tell me that we are on the downward slide
and going to go downhill fast.

Abraham Lincoln in Life and in History

O
n February 12, 2009, the two hun-
dredth anniversary of the birth of
Abraham Lincoln will be marked
by the nation. Lincoln is by mostly all
accounts considered the greatest of our
presidents, having led the United States
through the Civil War and begun the
process of the emancipation of the slaves.
Through most of his political life
though, he believed in a limited executive,
a view characteristic of the Whig party of
Henry Clay. Clay was his boyhood hero,
not Andrew Jackson, and Lincoln once
acknowledged that he was in all things a
Whig. He accumulated a total of four for-
mal months of education, yet he wrote
some of the most elegant prose in the
English language. He grew up reading the
King James Version of the Bible and
Shakespeare, not bad role models for 19th
century stylists. He was acutely aware of
his educational deficiencies and insisted
that his eldest child, Robert, go to Harvard
College. When he read a book he totally
absorbed it -- reading it aloud so he could
see and hear it at the same time.
Lincoln was truly born poor, a boy who
hated manual labor, who rarely got along
with his father, but he lived in a world of

Using those same powers as commander
in chief, Lincoln began the emancipation
process. He freed the slaves in rebel terri-
tories (where he did not have power initial-
ly), but then he pushed Congress for the
13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the
Constitution which ended slavery. He
truly gave the nation a new birth of free-
dom.
In the end, he redefined the Union of
Washington and Jefferson, and his two
great state papers -- the Second Inaugural
Address and his Gettysburg -- made
America a very different republic. Instead
of being a collection of states, it was a
nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to
the proposition that all men were equal. It
was a slave nation made purer by the blood
of martyrs, black and white, who fought for
that new Union.
And so on his anniversary, the nation he
so loved can take a moment to render its
due to its greatest president and also to a
promise that he made on behalf of genera-
tions not yet born.

has been doing comedy for about 15 years.
Starting out, he had aspirations of being an
actor. Then, one night, after watching
HBO’s comics, he decided to audition for
HBO. Standing up in front of about 400
people, he found his calling. He didn’t
make it onto HBO, but the experience made
him determined to hone his craft. “I used to
do it for fun, but now it’s serious,” said
Wilkins, who was the class clown in high
school. Since then, he’s worked with groups
from MTV like Bill Bellamy, and George
Annato from the Howard Stern Show. He
also credits the influences of Richard Pryor,
Robin Harris, and Bernie Mac for his
unique comic style.
Wilkins says he gets his ideas from
everyday occurrences and family. His style
is sometimes physical, and he says people
can relate to his work. “People in the crowd
will say oh, that happened to me,” he notes.
Since owner Hall partnered with Colleen
Barron, comedy nights are not the only
thing new at the Mt. Olive Bar & Grill.
Fridays the Grill features live music. “We
actively interview and solicit bands on a
daily basis,” says Hall. “We’re first and
foremost a restaurant, but we’re also a
sports bar, a night club, and a comedy club
all rolled up in one. That’s what makes us
different.”
Looking at the Grill’s schedule of events
each week, their diversity is obvious. On
Mondays, which happen to be the restau-
rant’s official pasta night, Players Pub
Poker is held in the restaurant’s private
room. Also known as no-risk Texas Hold-
em, the game is played for points rather
than money, and winners can earn prizes
and carry their points to other locations. On
Tuesdays and Wednesdays, there are drink
specials during the games, which can be
viewed from literally any seat on one of the
many large flat screen TVs. Thursdays,
there’s a DJ. “We clear out an area for danc-
ing,” Hall says.
The value here is unquestionable.
Comedy nights are far more economical
than a trip to the city. A $25 cover charge
lets guests choose either the 7-9 show or the
10-12 show each Saturday. In addition,
everyone is automatically entered into a
drawing for a free dinner. The kitchen is
open for dinner until midnight on show
nights. Menu prices, too, are quite reason-
able. Hall points out, “When people come
here, they can get a 24-ounce rib eye steak
and clams for under $25. We have some of
the lowest prices in the area.”
Value is certainly an important factor
when choosing a restaurant. What’s more
important, however, is quality. Anyone who
has ever ordered the sweet potato fries at
Mt. Olive B & G knows something is differ-
ent here. Hall told me, “We hand-cut all our

was so tender, it almost melted in your
mouth. Served along with these two superb
items were wedges of seasoned roast Yukon
gold potatoes and a side of whole green
beans and sliced carrots cooked al dente.
Needless to say, there was more food
here than any two people could hope to fin-
ish in one sitting. However, in the interest of
fairness, we both thought it best to at least
sample one or two items from the impres-
sive dessert tray.
With choices like white raspberry
mousse pie and fruit-topped cheesecake, we
knew a decision would not be easy. Our
server, Shannon Boise, patiently explained
each choice. There was carrot cake, three-
layer chocolate fudge cake, apple crumb,
and so much more. One of our two choices
turned out to be something called Night and
Day, a pie made up of cheesecake under a

ven with all of the worries about today’s economy,
families can still enjoy fun, entertaining evenings
together and stay on budget by playing board games.
While board games can certainly be played and
enjoyed at any time, a designated family game night
provides an opportunity for families to share an economical night
of staying in, having fun and creating new memories together.
In fact, according to a recent survey conducted by Hasbro,
nearly half (48 percent) of Americans believe that a family game
night is the most enjoyable form of family bonding, ranking
higher than watching movies (22 percent), cooking (19 percent)
and playing sports together (9 percent). Additionally, three in
four (75 percent) Americans would rather play board games than
video games as a group activity at a family reunion or gathering.
“Family game night invites everyone to turn off the outside
world for a short time and reconnect with each other,” said Matt
Collins, vice president of marketing for Hasbro Games. “A new
game generally costs less than other family entertainment options,
such as dining out or attending a sporting event, making adding a
new game to your game night repertoire an economical choice.”
A night out at the movies can cost a family more than $40
and the experience is over once you leave the theater. On the
other hand, a new board game often costs less than $25 and can
be added to the family’s game collection to be played again and
again.
Are you ready for a great family night in? If so, get ready for
a night of fun and schedule a family game night! Hasbro, the
maker of Parker Brothers and Milton Bradley games, suggests a
few tips to maximize your family game night so that it is some-
thing the whole family will look forward to week after week:
Schedule it!: Decide in advance which day will be your
family game night. It doesn’t matter which night of the week
you choose — any night will do! As long as the date is
marked on a calendar that everyone can see and the parents
make it a priority to keep the appointment, the night will be
one to remember!
Involve everyone in the planning: Involve the whole
family in the planning process by allowing the kids to pick
the games or choose the snacks. For variety, rotate responsi-
bilities each time you have a family game night.
Create a tradition: Whether it’s a specific family-
favorite dinner before game night, the way that teams are
chosen or a 30-minute extension on bedtime, establish an
activity on family game night that becomes a family tradi-
tion. This element will create even more excitement with
everyone in the family.
Keep a family scoreboard: From week to week, recog-
nize the family member who won the last game night by
posting their name on a special scoreboard — perhaps it’s a
place of honor on the refrigerator. Or, create a family crown
that can be worn by the winner at dinner or during the next
game night.
Remind everyone: To keep the date with the family, set
up reminders to make sure that game night happens. Set up
an alarm on a handheld device or on the family computer.
For the kids, put a note in their lunchbox reminding them
about family game night. By building anticipation for family
game night, you will help build excitement for family time.
Mix it up with special guests: To expand the fun,
invite other families in your neighborhood to participate in
a family game night tournament. Or, if you have extended
family members staying with you or if you are traveling dur-
ing a scheduled game night, invite everyone to participate!

However, whether enjoying a family-favorite game or discover-
ing a potential new favorite, playing board games as a family

Laughter: Games offer a fresh experience every time you

with giggles in mind and would be a great choice on nights

nectedness and respect among family members.
