His eyes, the color of amber and ringed with the deepest black, seemed to gaze into her very soul. Thick, dark hair fell over his brow, tickling her face as he lay on top of her, breathing heavily, inhaling her own ragged breaths. The short-cropped beard on his face contrasted richly against his bronzed skin, and Malika desperately wished to touch him, just to be sure she was not dreaming. My prince Tariq, he interrupted. I cannot call you that. You will after tonight. His lips pulled into an alluring grin, revealing straight, white teeth. The meaning behind his words wasnt lost, and her heart pounded wildly against her ribs. But you are the Viper. Her voice sounded breathless, even to her ears. Hed invaded her tent in the dead of night. Unless she screamed, no one would run to her rescue. But even if she did, no one would dare go against the will of the caravan prince. And you are my prey, he whispered. Tariq lowered his head and suckled her neck, gently biting her skin. Goose bumps raced across her body, and her nightclothes were a barrier against him. Her skin begged for his touch, for the slightest contact with his body, something shed longed for since the moment shed first stood in his presence. This was the man who commanded his people with a firm but loving hand, the man who had full reign over their very lives. This was the man she wanted kissing her, above her. Inside her. When his mouth moved to her ear and tugged on her

lobe, she bucked. He took that opportunity to thrust his knee between her legs, spreading them to accommodate his hips. I have read the lust in your eyes, little flower, he said hotly against her cheek. You want this just as much as I. Hearing the Viper confess he wanted her made her moan deep in her throat. He noticed and grinned wickedly. Will you deny me? No, my prince, she answered almost immediately. Tariq, he said again, his lips now teasing hers. Say it. I cannot, she whimpered. Lifting her head, she attempted to kiss him, but he moved away just enough to torment her. You refuse a command from your prince? He bit her lower lip gently and she hissed with shock, acutely aware that her nipples were now hardened and rubbing against his chest in a most delicious way. It was all she could do not to raise her hips to connect with him as well. No, Your Highness. Then say it, Malika. Say my name. She knew the name of the prince was reserved only for close family and friends. No one dared call him anything other than the Viper unless they were given permission, and his permission now brought tears to her eyes. Tariq. He closed his eyes, as if savoring the moment. Again. Tariq, she said, a little stronger this time. When he gazed at her once more, the fires of his passion were clearly evident in his eyes. Her fingers ached to touch him, but she was too afraid to do so. She kept her hands at her sides. Permission to say his name was not permission to touch him where she would. But perhaps he wanted her to. May I touch you, Your Highness? He growled and pressed harder against her, settling his weight on top of her body. She welcomed it, but still didnt dare touch him. You may touch me, my flower, anywhere you wish. In

fact, I command you to refrain from formalities. Tonight, I am not the Viper. I am simply Tariq. And I will make you mine. His mouth claimed hers in a fiery kiss, leading her deeper into her desires. His tongue played with hers, stroking her with such tenderness, she was determined to kiss him back in kind. Malika slid her fingers through his hair and marveled at its softness before grabbing two handfuls and holding on tight. Her legs wrapped around him as he surged forward again, making sure she felt every hard inch of him. She mewled into his mouth. Tariq, she whispered against his lips. I have always been yours. I know. His words brought a fresh wetness between her legs to greet him. She wished hed touch her there, if only to ease her ache. As if hed heard her plea, his hand moved between them, rubbing her through the thin fabric of her nightclothes. Open wider, Malika. He nudged her thighs. Let me kiss you to ecstasy. His hands began tugging on her robes, urging them over her hips. Tariq caressed her with the warmth of his palm, bringing her to The ringing cell phone snapped Sabine Santiago out of her smokin hot sex scene. Damn it. Who the hell would be calling her at She glanced at the clock. It was ten oclock in the morning. Okay, so it wasnt that early. She took hold of the receiver and sighed loudly at the caller I.D. It was her editor, Mary Stein. Hello? Hows my sheikh coming along? So much for pleasantries. Mary was nothing if not blunt. Hes not a sheikh. Hes not on my desk, either. Thought Id call and make sure youre writing. Sabine sighed. Yes, Im writing. In the middle of a sex scene if you must know. Ooo, read me some!
7

No, she said with a grin. Youll read it when you read it. Better be sooner rather than later. I cant push your release date out much further. A pang of guilt ripped through her. Shed promised a new book on her editors desk two months ago, but inspiration hadnt struck and the deadline came and went. It had only been recently, with the erotic dreams shed been having, that she had anything at all to write about. It will be finished soon. How soon? Mary asked with a hint of desperation in her voice. To be perfectly honest, a lot sooner if I didnt have to go to this crazy shindig tonight. Mary chuckled. Oh, youre not missing that, Ms. Big Shot Author. Fans have paid good money to meet you and their other favorite authors at this convention. Besides, well all be in costumes. Itll be a hoot! Sabine glanced at the light pink harem outfit shed bought, that was now hanging on the back of her motel room door. She was going as her heroine tonight, Malika the servant girl. The costume was airy and light, made of soft silks and see-through tulle. It felt like a dream against her skin, but being dressed up in a crowd of people didnt exactly call to her. Hey, maybe youll find your Viper Prince in one of those be-muscled hotties at the convention. Sabine smiled. There wasnt a man on earth who could compare to the hero in her novel. Shed be hard-pressed to find someone as sexy as Tariq. Good Lord, she was lusting after a character in her book. Well, maybe that meant it was going to be a best seller. Perhaps, she said. Ill meet you at the front doors of the Radisson at six, sound good? Yeah, that gives me most of the day to write. Thats what I like to hear. Bring me a sample. Not a chance, Sabine said, chuckling. An artiste never reveals her masterpiece until its finished. Mary heaved a sigh into the phone. Fine. See you later.
8

Bye. Great. Now her mood was broken. Shed been writing since she woke up around seven a.m. after dreaming this very sex scene. Shed been making love to the Viper herself, feeling every touch, every sigh. Even the memory made her cross her legs in frustration. She stood from the bed and put her laptop on the blanketafter saving her work, of course. This particular book was different than any shed written before. Her usual fare was historical westerns. She was a sucker for a tengallon hat and a man on a horse. But from the moment she began dreaming of the Viper, of Tariq, she knew she had to write his story. Shed sold it to her editor as a sheikh romance, but Tariq wasnt a sheikhhe was a caravan prince who traveled to his oasis collecting water for his people. His world, Jikkar, was a dry planet with two moons, filled with hot desert sands and sultry desert nights. Shed begun dreaming about him from the moment shed bought the coiling snake armband, a beautiful trinket of gold with two inlaid rubies for eyes. She found it at the flea market by her house in Rosemont, Oregon, and couldnt pass up such a screaming deal. The vendor had only wanted twenty dollars for the thing, but by the weight of it alone, it had to be real gold. She hadnt argued and bought it outright, feeling almost compelled to do so. There was no way she was leaving that booth without the armband. Afterwards, shed gotten it appraised, and had been floored by its true value. Now, the armband was tucked away in her luggage, an essential part of her harem-girl costume. She was going to guard that trinket with her very life. The vendor had told her the snake was a viper, a sand viper to be exact. And at the moment shed touched it, the image of her Viper Prince flitted through her mind. Within a day of wearing it, she had a plot idea, and now she had a couple hundred pages of a manuscript written after only two weeks. Mary had pleaded and cajoled her to attend the romance writers conference in Los Angeles, but unfortunately, the rooms at the Radisson near LAX and all
9

the surrounding hotels had been booked by the time shed been able to plan her arrival. It actually worked out, because she didnt have the money to lay down for those ritzy hotels anyway. Sabine ended up settling for a Motel 6 a little ways from the airport, which prompted her to rent a car. She wasnt about to take a cab to the Radisson every time she wanted to attend the conference, when she could have a little compact that cost less than the cab and would take her anywhere she wanted to go. Right now, however, she was going to hop in the shower and try to get back into the groove of her sex scene. Once the hot spray steamed up the bathroom, she was deep in the memory of Tariqs mouth on her skin and his face between her legs. Hed lapped her clit to pleasure before pouncing on her, holding her hands above her head while hed thrust his cock into her heat, again and again. Hed been thick, so very thick, filling her completely, but shed welcomed him, wanting more, needing more. Her own soapy hands caressed her skin, making her long for her prince right there in the hot spray. She had half a mind to go back to bed and dream of him again, as shed dreamt of the man every night since she started writing her book. Maybe she just needed a man in general. It had been a long time since shed been laid. If this romance convention taught her anything, it was that formalities were tossed out the window. Women freely groped the be-muscled hotties Mary had spoken of. Perhaps if she flirted a bit, shed get lucky. Or maybe shed at least get the images of this sexy desert prince out of her head. Sabine stepped from the shower and dried off. She got dressed and decided to find something to eat when her stomach growled. There were a lot of options for food in Los Angeles. Then shed jump back into her scene. She had to stop obsessing about her romance hero. But her dreams were so real. Unlike dreaming of mere sex, it sure felt like shed been having it. Her body had the familiar aches in the morning, but perhaps shed just been tossing and turning all night.
10

Damn. She needed a man. Stat. ~*~ That evening Sabine hurried across the parking lot of the motel to her rental car. Being dressed as a harem girl wasnt exactly the norm, even if she was in Los Angeles. Thankfully, no one was around to gawk at her. Shed done her long, golden hair into a high I-dream-of-Jeannie ponytail. Her viper armband was firmly placed on her right upper arm, completing the look. Now all she needed to do was swallow the butterflies swirling up from her belly. She didnt do well at romance conventions. Despite being a semi-successful romance author, she was somewhat of a wallflower. It took a few drinks to get her out among the fans. Thankfully, shed been able to finish her sex scene after shed gotten some food. At least her Viper Prince didnt have to blue-ball it while she was having fun at a costume party. She giggled at her own thought as she pulled out of the lot onto the street. Now that hed consummated his relationship with Malika, there were definite complications. How would the prince receive his servant girl now? Would he allow her to speak his name in mixed company? And how could they have a happily-ever-after when the Viper was expected to marry the niece of the Jackal Prince? Her mind was elsewhere as she drove. Sabine didnt see the red light until shed driven into the middle of the busy intersection. The scream of a horn and the screech of tires pierced the air. The front grill of a semi filled her drivers side window and her last conscious thought was of her handsome prince. Disappointment rippled through her a split second before impact. Shed never finish his story.

Two
Im dead. For a few moments, Sabine couldnt move. But once she did, she felt soft, shifting sands underneath her. They were hot to the touch, but she endured it in order to push herself up. Her back had warmed as well and, with each jerky movement, she cried out in pain. It felt like a sunburn, but it had to be from the car accident. Had she been thrown from the car? Burned somehow? Glancing around, she squinted in the bright sun, shocked to see sand as far as her eyes could see. The streets of Los Angeles were nowhere to be found. Where the hell was she? Heaven was a desert? No, no, no, this didnt make sense. She had to be dreaming. Perhaps she was asleep. Or unconscious. In a coma. That had to be it. This looked too much likeher invented world of Jikkar. Sand had gotten inside her costume, and now she was uncomfortable. For a hallucination, her brain was doing a good job of convincing her. The sun was hot and oppressive; she needed to shield her eyes as she looked around. Behind her was what looked to be an oasis, with a thicket of palm trees growing in the desolation. Smacking her lips, her mouth suddenly dry, all she could think about was a tall glass of water. She stood on wobbly legs, but fell back to the sand. She tried again, this time finding her balance. The sandals on her feet hadnt been made to truly traverse the desert and,
12

in no time, her feet were sore and blistered. Despite looking fairly close, the oasis was a little ways off. It took her the better part of an hour, but she reached it finally, collapsing in the cool grasses growing around the waters edge. Flowers of many sizes and colors bloomed around her, and birds flew between the trees, cawing to one another. A few other desert creatures had come to drink at the oasis as well, a lizard sunning himself on a rock, and a creature that resembled a large prairie dog. In the water, Sabines reflection looked haggard, with her hair poking out of her ponytail every which way. Her cheeks were pink with sun exposure and she was so very tired. This was real. This had to be real. She could feel every little thing, each blade of grass and the kiss of the cool breeze off the water. With a cry of desperation, she dunked her head and drank, reveling in the sweet sensation. Once shed had her fill, she took off her sandals and dipped her feet, then sighed deeply. That felt so good. A rustle, followed by a gasp and a few shouts caught her attention. Three men ran toward her, shouting and flailing about, looking just about as ridiculous as anyone could in long, red robes and turbans. But she soon realized they were shouting at her. And they were pissed. Just beyond them sat a long line of strange carriages hitched to enormous furry beasts. You there! one of them yelled. What do you think you are doing? The prince will have your head! another cried out. How dare you? the third screamed, clearly the most upset of the three. I was thirsty, she explained. They didnt seem to care. Once they reached her, they grabbed her arms and yanked her to her feet. Ouch, watch it, buddy! she said, attempting to break free of their grasp. It was impossible. Thief! The man yelled in her face. You have defiled the Vipers oasis. He will see to your punishment. Wait, what? The Viper. So this was Jikkar. But unlike her dreams,
13

it was as if she was really there. With every step she winced, realizing her feet were bare, giving her no protection from the hot sand. Thankfully the grasses cooled the sand somewhat, but she still stumbled. Rounding a few trees, she saw the full length of the princes caravan, just as shed pictured in her book. The strange carriages were called caravs, and they were as big as train cars outfitted with runners, like sleighs, to traverse the sand. Shed once described the beasts pulling them as enormous, hairy oxen, but nothing compared to seeing them in person. As tall as a house and just about as long, these creatures were larger than any elephant on earth. At the moment, they seemed content to just stand there serenely as if the sun wasnt beating down upon them. How they managed to survive with that giant fur coat was beyond her. The men pushed her farther down the caravan. She knew exactly which carav was Tariqs, the one with the red viper crest on the door, and the two red banners emblazoned with a black coiling viper gently flapping from the rooftop. Sabine swallowed hard. Now that she was out of the grass, her feet screamed at her, and tears welled in her eyes. The men had told her shed defiled the Vipers oasis. She knew what that meant. She was going to be punished, as water was the most precious resource on Jikkar. It was treated like currency. Problem was, shed never written this scenario. Shed never dreamt it before, either. Good Lord. She was terrified. The men pounded on the door leading into the princes carav, waiting until a deep, resonant voice bid them to enter. They had to take three steps to climb inside, but once they did, they dragged Sabine up with them, seemingly uncaring for her well-being. The inside of the Vipers personal carriage was cool and dark. After being in the harsh sun, Sabine had to blink to see anything at all. Beautifully ornate golden lamps hung from the ceiling while yards of red silk adorned the walls. Pillows of every color were strewn all over the floor, and a plush, colorful carpet, woven in red and gold, was underneath her feet. The men threw her to the floor.
14

She cried out as she tried unsuccessfully to break her fall. Every part of her was tender. Perhaps she was feeling the effects of the car accident after all. Maybe shed wake up soon. Found this woman stealing from your oasis, Your Highness. She dunked her head, then her her feet! She is a thief. She must be punished. Sabine didnt want to open her eyes. She didnt even want to look up. She couldnt stand the thought of Tariq looking at her with anything other than appreciation in his eyes. Even if this was an elaborate hallucination, she wanted his approval, and looking at him now would only make her agony worse. But his silence distracted her. What would he do? What was the punishment for stealing water? She hadnt written that into her book, but she knew what she would have written. Death. And not just any death. Death at the hands of the desert. Theyd take her somewhere far beyond the oasis, somewhere no living thing could survive, then drop her into the sand and leave her behind. She had to cover her mouth to contain her cry. She wears a viper, Your Highness, one of the men said. No doubt she stole this as well. He tried to take the armband off, but she fought him, suddenly finding the strength within herself. Her aches and pains screamed at her, but she wasnt about to lose her most valuable possession. No, please! she exclaimed. Dont take it. The man backhanded her. She landed on the carpet in a daze. I did not give you leave to beat her! That was Tariq. God, she was going to be sick. Step away from the woman. Now! The men complied, and soft footsteps approached her. Rich, red robes appeared a moment before the prince himself knelt in front of her. She wouldnt look. Sabine turned away. Gentle hands inspected her armband, turning her arm this way and that.
15

This was my mothers. Where did you get this? The Vipers words were spoken quietly, but she could hear the malice behind them. Please Where? he repeated. I bought it. At a flea market. Itcalled to me. I had to buy it. II didnt mean to steal from you, Your Highness. I didnt know it was your oasis. Im sorry. Im so sorry. Im not from here. Im not, I know it sounds strange, but I woke up face down in the sand and realized I was thirsty. If Id known the oasis belonged to the Viper, I never would have A bronzed hand touched her face and she flinched. But he didnt strike her. He merely lifted her chin so that she could look him in the eye. The man was more gorgeous than she remembered from her dreams. He didnt wear a turbanhis hair was loose, falling in waves to his shoulders. His dark, amber eyes were kind as he stared at her, and his short-cropped black beard complimented his face. She found herself wondering if it was as soft as it looked. Her body gravitated toward him of its own accord, and she was acutely aware he hadnt removed his hand. The touch was electrifying. More than any touch shed ever dreamed, this was real, tangible. The warmth of him seeped into her, making every inch of her skin beg for more. Something crossed his features. Recognition? He stared at her as if he knew her, but was trying to remember her name. All the times shed dreamt of him, hed never had to wonder. She was Malika, his servant girl. But this snafu hadnt been part of her story. Closing her eyes, she nuzzled into his hand. Tariq, she whispered. The men behind her gasped. The Vipers hand dropped. Sabine suddenly realized what shed just done. The name of the caravan prince was not hers to speak. Along with stealing his water, shed spoken his name without permission. Now her punishment would be twice as harsh. Perhaps a nice flogging before her death in the desert. The Vipers expression was hard now. Her vision swam with tears.
16

Im sorry. Im sorry. Bowing her head, she did her best to prostrate herself before him. Without a word, he reached for her armband and twisted it off. Her skin had been burned from the sun, and an impression of the snake was still on her arm. What is your name, since you seem to know mine? His voice was harsh, striking her as if hed smacked her with his open palm. Sabine, she said meekly. She wasnt going to say any more. Shed only get herself into more trouble. If she had any luck, shed awaken in a hospital bed and all this would be forgotten. But somehow, she didnt think that was going to happen. Shed been plucked from reality and dropped into the plot of her book. Or at least, the world shed created. As crazy as it sounded, she decided to go with the flow. She didnt want to piss these people off any further. Sabine. He rolled her name off his tongue as if it was a curse. She flinched again. The Viper stood. She dared not look at him again. All she wanted to do was waste away. Perhaps theyd give her that opportunity. The sun has burned her, he said to his men. Take her to my physician. Once she is healthy, she is to go to the Bantiem. Yes, Your Highness. Bile rose in Sabines throat. That was the prison carav, where they kept those awaiting punishment. Wake up, Sabine. Wake the hell up! Two of the three men took hold of her arms and hauled her to her feet none-too-gently. She cried out and sagged against them, feeling every sharp pain of her burns, not to mention the bruises from her car accident. Shed been damn lucky she hadnt broken anything. Do not hurt her any further! But Viper, she is a thief. She said your name! Instantly, a sword flashed in the air. Sabine had no idea where it came from, but Tariq was holding it against the mans throat. It flashed silver in the lamplight, but had an etched form of a snake rising from the hilt inlaid in gold. Sabine would be willing to bet it was a viper as well.
17

Do not ever question my authority. The man shook his head at the prince. II wouldnt think of it. I do not want her harmed any further. Is that clear? Yes, Viper. The prince held his sword aloft for a few more moments, staring each man in the eye, as if daring them to protest. When none of them did, he lowered his weapon and sheathed it somewhere beneath his robes with lightning speed. Sabine was amazed. He was a swordsman? She never knew. What else didnt she know about her hero? Once she had that thought, she curbed it. He was flesh and blood now, much more than words on a page. He was not her hero. He was the Viper Prince and he was to be obeyed. Chills radiated throughout her body despite the heat of his eyes when they connected with hers again. The weight of his gaze was too much to bear. She dropped her head and stared at the carpet. Hed still been holding the viper armband close to his chest, as if hed found something that had been long lost. He must have given them a silent command as the men shuffled her out the door. She tripped on the steps and cried out when her tender feet hit the hot sand. The prince followed them outside. Release her. The moment their hands were gone from her arms, she dropped and felt the momentary burn from the sand on her shins. Another strong pair of arms lifted her as if she weighed nothing. My men are incompetent, Tariq tossed over his shoulder as he began walking. I will take you to my physician myself. She knew from the book she was writing that the Viper was waited on hand and foot. He didnt need to make sure shed be taken care of; he had an abundance of people whod see to it for him. Friends and servants, not to mention family, traveled together in the caravans. There was no need for him to do this now, unless he was curious. You have no sandals? Do you not know how hot the sand is?
18

His rich voice vibrated through her. She trembled at the sound. I took them off when Idipped my feet. Sire. I have killed men for lesser offenses. Her heart rate skyrocketed. Im sorry, she said again. I didnt know where I was. The last thing I remember is aan accident. I was about to be flattenedthen I woke up here. I should have known, but I thought I was dreaming. Your Highness, Viper, sir. Half his mouth lifted in a sardonic grin. She had to look away or risk falling to pieces. How far down the line was his physician? Dreams can be deceiving, he murmured. Yes, I know. He was silent a moment before he said, You were in an accident? I think so. I was driving. I had to be hit. I couldnt have gotten out of the way in time. Then I woke up here, face down in the desert, burning hot. You are not appropriately dressed, he mused. I am not from Jikkar, Sire. Call me Viper. Pain twisted in her chest. He hadnt given permission to say his name. She knew he wouldnt, she was a stranger, after all. But the reminder of his traditions, of his peoples traditions, brought her back to reality. Whatever that was. She nodded, acknowledging his words, but refusing to say another word. She was afraid she might just break down if she did. This wasnt the way shed dreamt of meeting this man. Countless times she daydreamed the impossible scenario of actually coming face-to-face with her male lead, and every time he took her into his armsbut he was carrying her to his bed, not to his physician before her punishment for theft was carried out. She shivered again. He noticed. Your burns are bad, he told her. But not as bad as they could have been. I should have known it was your oasis. Youve even marked it and I didnt pay attention. I should have seen the rock with the viper, I should have seen it!
19

She was losing it. She could feel the hysteria building inside her. Do not talk about that now. I should have stayed in the desert and let the sun burn me. Its no less than I deserve for stealing from the Viper! Hed stopped walking and pounded on the door of another carav. Kareem! he shouted. Your Highness, a small, dark man said, poking his head out the door. His eyes bulged. Who is this? She was found in the sand. I need you to heal her burns. Come in, Viper, come in! The prince didnt waste any time bounding up the steps into the mans carriage. Set her over there, Kareem said, pointing to an empty bundle of blankets. I want to go home, Sabine wailed, her tears falling freely. She clutched Tariqs robes and hid her face. I just want to go home. She felt him lowering her and she let go instantly, knowing shed probably get in trouble now for soiling his fine clothing. But the look he gave her made fresh tears well to the surface. That was pity. She turned away from him, only to hear the Viper gasp, then touch her back. Pain shot through her limbs. She leapt away from his fingers and curled into a ball. Tell me you can heal this. Kareem was silent for so long, Sabine could no longer hide her sniffling. It was hopeless. She wasnt sure she wanted to be healed. What was the point? Her punishment was going to be just as cruel. I will do all I can. I expect hourly reports. No matter how hard she tried, she couldnt keep her body from trembling. Of course, Highness. Her legs and arms were stiff now. She couldnt move them if she tried. Fear entered her heart and she began hyperventilating. Iwant togohome! A cool hand touched her shoulder, and instantly, her
20

breathing calmed. She took deep breaths, amazed she could do so. Im so scared, she whispered. I will not hurt you. That must be the other mans voice. Kareem, the Vipers physician. I know my punishment, she moaned. Why heal me at all? Because the Viper commands it. The Viper. Was he still there? She didnt know, but she couldnt roll over to see for herself. Her body had stopped listening to her brain. Tell him Im sorry. For everything. The man touched her shoulder again, and she went out like a light.

Tell him Im sorry. For everything. Tariq had never abided by a womans tears and now was no different. Once Kareem had calmed her with his magic, Tariq had left, intent on solving the mystery of this woman. Along with her burns, she was now covered with bruises, bruises that hadnt been there mere minutes before. But that wasnt what concerned him the most. For the past two weeks, hed been dreaming of her, of a woman with golden hair and blue eyes, a woman he had no hope of ever finding on his world. Now, it had seemed shed found him, and shed been wearing the armband of his mother. His mother. Lindrah. Long had she suffered at the hands of his father. The previous Viper Prince had been a tyrant, ruling his caravan with a hand of fear. Shed been determined not to raise her son in the same cruel manner. Shed believed in true love, and frequently told her son stories of Jikkars moons, Thiadra and Pamos, two lovers in the night sky. Shed also learned some of the ancient magics, and had enchanted a trinket to find the woman her son was destined to be withthe Viper armband. And shed done so without her husbands knowledge. Her reasoning had been that Tariq would never have to look for love, the armband would look for him, and bring the woman to him when he was ready. But shortly after his mother had passed away, Tariqs father had accepted an offer from the Jackal for him to marry
22

Trianna, the Jackals niece. However with his father gone as well, Tariq had put Trianna off for years. And now, the woman wearing his mothers armband had appeared, caught stealing from his oasis. The law could not be forgotten. The fact that hed been dreaming of her confirmed in his mind his mothers enchantment had come full circle. He hadnt been able to allow her to leave in the arms of his men. He had to see to her care himself, something hed never done before. Whether or not this Sabine was a woman he could love didnt matter. Hed already promised to wed the Jackals niece, Trianna. A few servants watched as he marched to the oasis himself, scanning the banks for Sabines sandals. When he found them, he bent down and sighed. They were definitely not meant for the desert. He picked them up and sucked in his breath. One of them was covered in blood. ~*~ Later Tariq sat on the throne in his carav, a mere platform covered with fine fabrics and soft pillows, and listened impatiently while Kareem gave him his first report of Sabines health. The woman has sustained numerous injuries, Viper, the physician said. She was telling the truth about an accident, although, I do not understand how she could be so badly wounded without being trampled. Explain. His heart was in his throat. He was determined not to care about the woman beyond her injuries. He swallowed hard. I used my abilities to peer into her body. She has a few cracked ribs, and one of them punctured her lung. Her left arm is crushed, and her left leg has a gash running from hip to ankle. I dont even know how shes alive. My magic is sustaining her at this point, but it will be many days before she can walk again. How is this possible? Tariq asked, running his fingers through his hair. She was standing before me. She was not that injured. Kareem shrugged. I do not know. Ive never seen anything like it. While I was examining her, new injuries would form.

She said she was driving, in her world. Perhaps they have caravs, like we do, I do not know. But she was about to be crushed by something, then woke up here. Pardon me for saying, Highness, Kareem said. But she was crushed. I find it highly unlikely she could have survived these injuries on her own. She only lives now because of my magic. Ice ran through Tariqs veins. Shed been killed in her world. Killed and brought to his. Damn his mother and her meddling magics! Shed never mentioned the woman would have to die in order to be with him. Her injuries were all his fault. But they hadnt begun appearing until after hed taken off the armband. Perhaps if he gave it back Can she wear this? He grabbed the trinket from the floor where hed tossed it. Kareem shook his head. Not now, Viper. Her arms are too mangled for me to attempt it. I would only bring her more pain. He sighed deeply, feeling guilt such as hed never known. By all intents and purposes, he was the thief. Hed stolen her life, from the moment she put on his mothers enchantment. Keep me informed, he said, trying his hardest not to sound unhinged. The physician bowed and left his carav moments before Tariq yelled and threw the armband across the carriage as hard as he could. God of Vipers, please dont let Sabine die. He couldnt expect this woman to know the customs and laws of his people. If shed been brought to his world from her own, then she was innocent of all wrongdoing. And if she died now, his guilt would consume himhe knew it would. If the armband had found the woman who was perfect for him, and he let her die, Tariq would forever wonder what might have been. Ill wonder anyway, he told himself. His future was with Trianna, not with the blonde beauty in Kareems care. Tariq stood and paced his carriage, too confused and worried to do much more. What was he going to do with her?

Sabine floated in and out of consciousness. At times, someone was trying to make her eat a thin soup. Other times, someone held her hand. And at one point, she could have sworn she heard the Viper himself speaking softly to her. When she finally awoke, she was looking into the kind brown eyes of an older woman. There you are, she said with a smile. My names Karrin. Im Kareems wife. How are you feeling? Sabine tried to move. It was still painful, but bearable. Better, she answered. Here, you need to drink this. The woman held up a small bowl of water. Sabine shook her head. I shouldnt. You need to drink. I dont want to steal it. Karrin gave her a gentle smile. The Viper commands it. He has given this water to you. Closing her eyes, Sabine tried to forget the rush of emotion that overcame her upon hearing his title. She accepted the water through chapped lips. Hes been here every day, the woman said. Watching over you, making sure youre better. He should be worried about collecting enough water for Suridesh, but hes always here, asking if youve awoken yet. Perhaps we should tell him, hmm? She waved to Kareem, who was standing near the door. The man left and closed the door quietly behind him. Sabine ignored the warmth in her belly. Tariq had
25

been there with her. Perhaps she hadnt been imagining it. Had he really spoken to her? She wasnt going to ask. Suridesh? she asked. It sounded familiar, but she couldnt place the name. Its a tent city, Karrin replied. The largest in the Golden Desert. Of course, she whispered. The caravan princes collect water at their oases and haul it back to Suridesh, then on to the other villages. She remembered now. The oases were the only source of water on Jikkar. Six princesthe Viper, the Jackal, the Spider, the Scarab, the Cobra, and the Falconlong-believed chosen by the gods, traversed the cruel and harsh desert to bring the water back for the people. No wonder they had such harsh laws. Her stomach growled. Do you have any more of that soup? Karrin smiled. Yes, but you are ready for more than mere broth. Today you can try some broth with meat. Sounds delicious. Lets get you propped up so you can eat it. It hurt to sit up, but it was a good pain. Her body wanted to be stretched and used. How long have I been out? Five days. Are you kidding? Five days? You were badly injured, Sabine. The woman moved to her small stove in the far corner of the carriage. Kareem thinks you were trampled. He says you wouldnt have survived if it hadnt been for his healing magic. She handed Sabine another bowl and a deep spoon. Her arms were weak, but she managed to hold them. Thankfully the soup wasnt too hot, but it was delicious. The door ripped open so hard and fast the entire carav rocked from side to side. There stood the Viper, staring right at her with reddened cheeks, as if hed run the entire way there. She stared back at him, her mouth full of soup. The man was gorgeous. His hair was pulled back today and his maroon-colored robes werent quite as full and regal as the others in which shed seen him. But that didnt make him any less of a prince. Just the way he stood proved he
26

was royalty, with enough confidence and pride to best any man. He stepped into the carriage. How is she? Sabine swallowed hard. Much better, my prince, Karrin answered. I shallgo see what my husband is up to. With one knowing glance to Sabine, she left. Sabine lost her appetite and tried to put her bowl on a nearby end table, but couldnt quite reach. The Viper took it, barely swiping her fingers with his. She felt the contact clear to her toes, reminding her she shouldnt touch him without his permission. He sat next to her on the bed. You are feeling better? Much, she answered. Are you in pain? She nodded then realized she probably should answer him verbally. He was the leader of this caravan, so he deserved respect. Yes, Viper. But it is a good pain. It feels wonderful to stretch. Kareem tells me you were gravely injured. Karrin tells me the same. But Im not surprised. I was in a bad accident. Very bad. Her eyes met his, and she wished they hadnt. Now, she couldnt look away. His amber gaze held her transfixed, there was no escaping him. I do not believe you survived in your world. His words were soft, but they were a blow just the same. You cannot go home, Sabine. She should have been overjoyed at the sound of her name spoken on his lips, but his words only filled her with trepidation. But this world isnt real. How am I here? How did I get here? The Viper arched a brow. I am as real as the desert sands. Shall I prove it to you? But I made you up. He scratched his head then stood to pace back and forth. Clearly you did not. I did! On my world, Im a storyteller. I was writing a book about you. Every night, Id dreamabout youabout Well, that doesnt matter. But you came from my head.
27

He gave her a sharp gaze then crouched in front of her. You dreamed of me? Its how I know your name, your given name. I never would have spoken it and disrespected you, but I thought this was a dream. I thought I was asleep and that youwouldnt mind. But now I cant wake up. The Viper clasped his hands in front of him and sighed. Youve been dreaming of me for about two weeks before you arrived on my world? Yes! How do you know? When his eyes met hers, she knew. She just knew. Hed dreamt of her as well. Oh, God. The things theyd done together. Panic welled inside of her. My mothers armband. When you bought it, you said you felt compelled to it. You were. She enchanted it to find you. It must have brought you here the moment you died. And it explains how we were connected, how we had dreams of each other. I am not a figment of your imagination, Sabine. The armband told you of me, and therefore you wrote your story. She was silent for a moment and bit her lip. Jikkar is real? He nodded. You are real? He nodded again. She hid her face in her hands and tried to hold back her sobs. She would never go home. I apologize for my mothers indiscretion. She thought she was doing right by me, yet she has done nothing but ruin your life. What do I do now? He stared at her, obviously at a loss. But something he just said jumped out at her. What do you mean, doing right by you? With a sigh, the Viper stood and turned away. You were supposed to be the one woman I could Love? she finished for him. He did not look at her, he merely nodded. He must be embarrassed. Which meant her own plot regarding this Viper Prince had been real after all. Youre engaged to the Jackals niece, arent you? That got his attention. He slowly turned around. The
28

armband revealed that to you? Apparently, it revealed a lot of things, Viper. Damn. Even saying his title sounded intimate. He must have noticed. He cleared his throat and scratched at his beard. Look, I guess Im stuck here. Im in the middle of the Golden Desert with only your caravan to take me back to civilization, is that right? Yes, he said simply. Then all I ask of you is a ride. And perhaps a way to work off my debt to you. I did steal your water after all. He barked out a laugh. My mother stole your life! I think we are even. She shook her head. No, Viper. In the eyes of your people, I must be punished, else your power will come into question. Believe me, I know. You can convince them I do not deserve death. They all must know of my injuries by now. But you cannot deny me my punishment. You want me to punish you? She scoffed. Believe me, I wish I didnt. I rather hope my punishment isnt a public flogging! But Im willing to be a servant in your caravan, until we get to Suridesh, and then you can make up any story you like about squaring my debt with my father, whom we both know doesnt exist, but they dont know that. Then, you can be free to marry your desert princess and never think on me again. He stared at her for a long moment. But you will be trapped on my world for the rest of your life. Sabine looked at her folded hands, her heart skipping a beat. Yes, I suppose I will. You would be willing to endure all of that so I dont lose the respect of my people? Why? Because, Ta She coughed behind her hand, mortified shed almost slipped and said his name again. Because you are the Viper Prince, esteemed on Jikkar as a steward of the gods. I am merelySabine. She shrugged and ignored her burning eyes. Perhaps I can start a new life in Suridesh, become a storyteller there. Do your people like stories? He stood in silence before answering. Very much. Good, then its settled. That is, if you say so. She
29

blushed. I would never assume to speak for you, Your Highness. If this is what you want, I should not like to argue with you. She managed a smile. How she did it, shed never know. The man of her literal dreams was planning to marry another woman. If she was writing her book, shed be the heroine whod scheme to win her heros heart. But this wasnt a romance novel, this was real life. She could never toy with Tariqs feelings, not when she cared so much about him. Thank you, Viper. He nodded once then walked out. Hed seemed upset about something. Perhaps shed spoken too freely about questioning his leadership with his people. But she wasnt about to sit around and be a lump while he took her back to town. Shed do her duty then let him go, even if it killed her. Again. ~*~ Shed smiled, and his entire existence had focused on her right then and there. Never in his life had he seen a woman more beautiful, with hair the color of burnished gold and eyes as bright as the sky. Her smile touched him, deep down, and he didnt quite understand it. Her reasoning behind her punishment had been sound, but he didnt know if he could go through with it. She planned on leaving his caravan in Suridesh, and he hadnt been prepared for the despair that washed over him at the thought. Hed gotten used to seeing her every day, visiting with her and sitting with her even though shed been unconscious. Kareem and Karrin had been healing her with their magic and she was almost back to normal. She just needed to get stronger. But shed almost died, and now, he was going to make her his servant for the three-week trip to the tent city. He didnt like it. He could command her to be his guest. No one would question his word as prince. But there would be whispers, he knew, and tests of his authority would soon follow. If he didnt punish someone from drinking freely at his oasis, then what would keep others from doing the same?
30

He retired to his carav where his supper was waiting and ate voraciously. Perhaps the food could fill the hole within him. Hed loved his mother with all his heart. Hed known about the magic of the Viper armband, but figured it had been so long ago when shed sent it out into the universe, that perhaps hed been mistaken by its true purpose. But it had now returned, and all he could do was wonder if Sabine was the woman his mother wanted him to be with, the woman who fit him, heart and soul. Her caring and thoughtfulness for his position showed him a window into her character. But it didnt matter. Trianna was his intended. And he was going to marry her upon his return to Suridesh. The Jackal had been friends with Tariqs father, and theyd made the pact for their childrens arranged marriage just before his fathers untimely death. Seven years ago, Tariq had been thrust into the position of the Viper, and had loved every minute of it, not bothering to alter his fathers original wedding plans. Unlike the man whod come before him, the people of the caravan loved Tariq, and only wished the best for him. Perhaps his mother created the armband to spite her husband and to show her son another choice. One made of love. There was no doubt Tariq remembered every single dream with Sabine. He knew the soft contours of her skin and the way she liked to be touched. The only thing he didnt know was her taste. Watching her unconscious before him had nearly driven him mad. Hed still dreamt about her every night since her arrival, and hed been hard-pressed to stay away from Kareems carriage. Theyd managed to load most of the wagons with the ever-present water from his oasis. By tomorrow, theyd be finished, and the long trek to the tent city would begin the day after that. The food had done nothing to curb his unease, and Tariq walked the length of his carav again and again. He was sure he didnt love Sabine, but he was drawn to her like a moth to a flame. The dreams certainly werent helping. Even now he wanted to go to her and bask in her presence.
31

But he was the Viper Prince, not a love-sick young boy. He would stay put and watch over his caravan. He refused to be swayed by a lovely face with sad, luminous eyes.

32

Five
Sabine knew she was dreaming when she saw Tariq swimming without his long robes in his oasis. Knowing their harsh laws about water, she highly doubted he would actually skinny-dip in the very same water he reserved for his people to drink. But that didnt stop her from sitting on the grassy shore and watching him as if he was some mythical merman rising from the depths. His chest was bronzed and peppered with black hair, now dampened with droplets of water. She remembered running her fingers over his chest in countless dreams before. She longed to do it again. But these werent just frivolous flights of fancyno, she was sharing this dream with him. Now that she knew he dreamt this, too, she couldnt bring herself to be as bold as shed once been. He dunked his head then broke through the water, tossing his hair behind him and slicking it back with his strong hands. With a childish grin, his eyes met hers, and she witnessed firsthand the fires of his passion ignite. Sabine, he said. That one word filled the oasis with his resonant voice. She glanced around and noticed they were alone. His caravan was nowhere in sight. All that greeted her were a few birds and a thick hedge of palm trees. Viper, she answered, tilting her head. Join me. No. He looked confused. Of all the times shed dreamt with him, shed never once said no. Then I shall join you. He began wading through the
33

water. His chest was nakedthe rest of him probably was too. If she got a glimpse of his fine form, she might not be as levelheaded as she was at that moment. No! she yelped. Sabine stood and weighed her options. She was in the desert. She could run, but she wouldnt get far. However, this was only a dream. It wasnt likely she would succumb to the elements. What is wrong? he asked. This, she said, indicating their surroundings. I cant. Not this time. Without looking back, she began walking. A splash sounded behind her. He wasnt going to be pleased. Not many dared defy the Viper. Her feet were bare, but she decided to make a break for it anyway. The sands hampered her progress, but she couldnt afford to stop. She should have known hed catch her. He was bigger, stronger, and used to the shifting desert sands. Tariqs hand clamped down on her elbow and stopped her. He turned her in his arms until she collapsed against his chest. She was too terrified to look into his eyes. She might give in to him, and doing so wouldnt be good for her sanity. What is the meaning of this? He was angry. Every line of his body was rigid, she could feel it under her fingertips. She tried to pull from his grasp, but he wasnt having it. Answer me! This isnt real. Any of it. We are dreaming, Tariq! The moment she said his name, she regretted it. Viper, I am sorry. Forgive me. She was touching him. She shouldnt be. He hadnt given her permission to do so. With a concentrated effort, she pried her hands from his magnificent chest. He still held her elbows. She didnt get far. When has it mattered? he asked. She stared at the sand. Since the moment I learned you were real. Since I knew you dream what I dream. Sabine, I dont understand. Viper, we dont know each other. We have no relationship. Weve only just met. He moved his hands up her arms to her face where he tilted her head, making her look at him. The moment her
34

eyes connected with his, she felt her will crumbling. He didnt say a word, he merely searched her face. When his thumbs stroked her bottom lip, she leaned closer to him, ashamed of herself. Please dont. If this is a dream, then where is the harm? Oh, God, if he continued to make sense, she was going to beg for him to take her. I will not take advantage of you, she whispered. You did not ask for this. Did you? No. Then your argument means nothing. She closed her eyes, knowing damn well she was fighting a losing battle. No man had the right to be so wickedly sexy. All he had to do was kiss her and shed do any damn thing he wanted. You dont belong to me. He scoffed, but she continued. You are promised to marry another woman. I will not defile that promise. A dream cannot be held against me. She opened her eyes only to find hed gravitated closer, filling her vision with his handsome face. She couldnt look away. We would know, Viper. We would know what weve willingly done. What weve already done. Tariq, he whispered. Tears filled her eyes. No, you are the Viper. I cannot call you that. Not anymore. Sabine. Let me go. Please. No. But His mouth silenced her. He made her forget she shouldnt touch him. Without conscious thought on her part, her hands delved into his thick, black hair and held on tight. He plunged his tongue, forcing her mouth open while his arms tightened around her. His lips were firm, yet soft as he commanded her to follow his lead. She was helpless to resist.
35

She wanted to wrap herself around him. The feel of his hard cock pressing against her belly excited her, and she whimpered into his mouth. He groaned in response, and without warning, he laid her down on the sand. You are mine, he growled as he attacked her neck. His soft beard rubbed against her skin as he bit and suckled her. You have confessed it to me in countless other dreams. His deft hands had found their way under her pink harem-girl costume. Her nipples puckered a moment before he claimed them and she gasped at his boldness. I have always been yours, she said, sniffling. It is you, Viper, who doesnt belong to me. He pulled back and stared down at her in silence. Wake up, Sabine, she moaned to herself. Wake up. Wake up. Wake up! With a gasp, she sat up in bed, safe in Kareems carriage. Bringing her knees to her chest, she wrapped her arms around them and quietly wept. ~*~ The next morning dawned bright and hot. After Kareem healed her one last time with his incantations, Sabine felt wonderful. Karrin gave her a long brown robe to wear and suitable sandals for the desert sand. They covered her entire feet with leather and had straps that wound up her calves. Once she was dressed, she wove her hair into a braid and accepted the twisted bit of fabric they wrapped around her head. Anything to keep that sweltering sun off her. It looked like a turban, but they called it a dunla. The prince has made it known once you are healed, you are to report directly to Darish for your punishment. Since you are well, I will take you to him now. When Karrin spoke, Sabines stomach tied in knots. She knew this day would come, but she had secretly hoped it never would. Shed made the mistake of drinking from the Vipers oasis without permission. She would take whatever punishment they deemed worthy. Who is Darish? she asked. The head of Vipers servants. Our prince doesnt own slaves like the other princes do, he does not believe in
36

owning a person as property. But he does have servants who care for him, his caravan, and the people who choose to travel with him. You are to become one of them for the time being. A servant. She was to become a servant. Sabine breathed a sigh of relief. She wasnt to be flogged or thrown into the Bantiem to roast in the heat. She could deal with being a servant. The journey to Suridesh was three weeks long. She could deal with three weeks of work. With a nod and a slight grin, she looked at herself in Karrins hand mirror. Her face was still pink from sun exposure, but she was sure it would probably be tanned very soon. Her lips were chapped, but they were healing. Despite all that transpired, she didnt look too bad. Even though she hadnt showered in days, she didnt feel sticky and her hair was clean. She was too mortified at the possibilities. Had Karrin given her baths when shed been unconscious? Had Kareem? She wasnt going to ask. Come, Karrin said, walking to the door. I will take you to him. Sabine took a deep breath and followed her out of the carav. Thankfully, she didnt lead her toward the Vipers carriage. Instead, she traversed the sands to where a small community of tents was set, a little ways from the caravan itself. The servants were curious as they walked around small, one-person tents, but no one spoke to her, and everyone kept their eyes averted. In the middle of the tents was a larger one, though not by much. Karrin called out for Darish, and a tall man appeared at the tent flap, wearing a dark brown robe. He was older, perhaps in his late fifties, with graying hair at his temples and gray peppering his thick beard. The Viper has commanded Sabine to be his servant until Suridesh. Can you see to her duties? Darish looked Sabine up and down disapprovingly. This is the one who drank from Vipers oasis? Sabine winced at the reminder and looked away. Darishs harsh glare was too much. Yes, Karrin said. Sabine had hoped for some sort of
37

kind words from the woman whod cared for her, but there were none. Her coddling was over. Now was the time for her to face the music. Darish grunted and waved at Karrin. The woman waited no longer and turned to leave, not once giving Sabine another glance. Pain entered her heart. Shed thought of Karrin as a friend. Perhaps shed been mistaken. Come. That one word made her jump. Darish walked away, clearly expecting her to follow. She followed meekly behind him, trying hard not to meet anyones eye. He made his way back to the caravan and opened one of the caravs that had a huge sliding door. This is to be your work today. I expect this carriage to shine by nightfall. Inside were empty stalls, presumably where they kept the Vipers array of fine horses and camels. But that wasnt what got her attention. A horrid stench wafted on the air, one of urine and dung. Im not going to complain. I deserve this. I do. If she had a hose, this wouldnt take that long at all. But she didnt have that luxury. She swallowed her self-pity. You may fill this one time at the water carav, but no more than once. Darish handed her a wooden bucket from just inside the door. If you are caught drinking the water you pour into this, you will be taken in front of the Viper. If you are caught being lazy, you will be taken in front of the Viper. If you do not finish cleaning this carav, you will Yes, I get it, she snapped, annoyed at the man. She took the bucket from his hand. How can I clean this carriage with just one bucket of water? That is your problem, he said, looking down his nose. When you are finished, you will be expected to help with the banquet tonight. Her eyes widened. Banquet? What are you talking about? Today is the last day of water collection at the oasis. Tomorrow we head out for Suridesh. The Viper celebrates the occasion and all in the caravan celebrate with him. You will be serving the food. But She looked between the filthy carav and Darish. Will I be given water to wash up?
38

He narrowed his eyes. We do not waste the Vipers water. But Ill smell like horse shit! He gave her a haughty look. Then do not get dirty. With that, he turned to leave. Wait! she shouted. He stopped but did not face her. Where is the water carav? Darish simply pointed to the oasis, where many men were already working, hauling the water into enormous barrels that were then loaded onto a carav twice as big as any of the others. Ten of these huge water caravs loomed near the waters edge. They looked to hold perhaps twenty barrels of water each. No wonder water was so precious on Jikkar. If the princes oases were the only source of water for the entire world, it would be a precious commodity indeed. You have until sundown. Best get started. Darish left her. The oasis itself was a little ways off. Before any work could get done, shed have to collect her water and walk back with it. But that meant shed walk right past the Vipers carav. Setting her jaw, Sabine decided to be tough. She could do this. It wasnt forever. She wasnt a coward. Placing one foot in front of the other, she began walking, refusing to give in to the panic of her thoughts. How was she going to wash the entire animal carriage with one bucket? Its not like she could slosh it on the floor and expect it to be clean. More than likely, shed have to use a rag of some kind and get down on her hands and knees. This was bound to be one dirty, disgusting job. She had to keep positive, for her own sanity. If jobs like this were what she had to look forward too, then these were going to be the longest three weeks of her life. ~*~ Cleaning the stalls had proved a challenge, but Sabine did the best she could. Shed found a tool in the corner of the carav she assumed had been used once before to clean the excrement. It resembled a hoe and allowed her to shove everything out the open door. That had been the easy part.
39

It was the scrubbing she didnt much fancy. It was no easy task. Shed managed, but hadnt had anything to scrub with. Therefore, shed unwound the dunla from her head and used that, hoping to all that was holy she wasnt breaking yet some other law she had no idea about. She hoped Karrin had given her the garment for good. Sabine wasnt too sure she could wash the stench out of it now. She hadnt bothered scrubbing the floor where the animals werent housed. There wasnt enough water. The floor was dirty from dust, but could merely be swept with the broom shed found near the hoe-like contraption. Shed sweep last. It was late in the day by the time shed finished scrubbing. Her hands were raw and she smelled like a sewer. The water itself was disgusting, but she didnt dare dump it out. For all she knew, they used it to water plants or something. But she wasnt going to take anything for granted. Not anymore. By the time she picked up the broom, Darish reappeared in the doorway. She cried out at his unexpected presence, but continued to sweep. His keen eyes scanned the carav and he grunted without glancing at her. Youre done, he said. Follow me to begin preparations for the banquet. The banquet. How could she have forgotten? The entire front of her robe was wet and her hands were hopelessly dirty. Her hair surely sprang in every direction, but she dared not tame it or else shed get it even more filthy than it already was. Idont think I can, sir, she said. Darish leapt into the carav with the agility of a younger man and shoved her to the door. It is not my fault you got yourself dirty. How could I not get dirty when Im knee deep in crap? she yelled. You should have been more careful. With that, he pushed her again. She stumbled out of the carriage, fuming mad. Her stomach growled incessantly. She hadnt eaten all day. She didnt dare drink from the water carav when shed filled her bucket, and her thirst was
40

palatable. But its not safe. I cant handle food! Then you will set up the wood for the fire. He shoved her near the oasis where servants were rushing back and forth. By their chatter, she knew the feast would start at sundown. A few of them had been cooking and baking in the kitchen carav, and the smells that filled the air made Sabines mouth water. Already the children of the caravan played with each other near the tree line, and the haunting music of a few stringed instruments filled the air. Sabine hadnt seen the Viper all day, thankfully, but now she was anxious. Their parting in her dream hadnt been on the best of terms, and she was both annoyed and embarrassed to face him. Hed wanted to continue their imaginary relationship, but she had not. She had no idea how hed take that rejection, even if it hadnt been real. A few steaming pots were brought out from what Sabine could only assume was a kitchen-like carav. Bowls and utensils were brought next to the waters edge and set next to a myriad of rocks, where she assumed esteemed members of the caravan sat. Is this the one? A woman with deep lines on her face peered into Sabines eyes. Darish nodded. She is to collect wood for the bonfire. Yes, sir. Darish walked away and out of nowhere, the woman tugged on Sabines braid so hard, her eyes watered. Guess its not fake after all. A few of us wondered. Excuse me? She batted the womans hand away and pulled her braid over her shoulder. Your hair. Weve never seen hair the color of gold. Well Im sorry to disappoint you. The woman smacked her upside the head. Dont take that tone with me. I run the kitchen and Darish has put you in my care; youll do as I say. Go to the oasis and collect fallen palm fronds as well as a few dead bushes and any sticks you can. You smell like hatshef and you look like it too. Sabine glared but held her tongue. She could only assume what hatshef meant. Woman was lucky she didnt
41

get a knuckle sandwich. But it was only Sabines first day as the Vipers servant. She wasnt going to disgrace him by brawling with his head cook. Without a word, she turned and marched to the oasis, ignoring the delicious sound of the water lapping the shore. She knew how cool and inviting it was. She remembered its sweet taste. Her mouth watered as she gathered fuel for the fire, but she managed to turn her back on the water and hum to herself for a distraction. All she wanted to do was eat and sleep. The heat of the day, along with her strenuous work, had been almost too much to bear. Coupled with not getting anything to eat, her body was exhausted. Thats when she saw him. Across the clearing from her, next to the kitchen carav, was Tariq, and he was even more handsome than she remembered. He wore long, dark red robes that were embroidered with golden thread along the front and across the hem near his feet and his cuffs. He didnt have a dunla on his head, and his hair fell in thick waves to his shoulders. He laughed at something. The sound of it just barely reached her. She hadnt meant to stare, but her skin prickled with anticipation the moment his eyes met hers. The head cook was talking to the Viper and pointing right at her. Great. Now she was probably telling him she smelled like hatshef. He laughed again. Damn him. She couldnt take it anymore. Sabine held her head high and marched across the sand, dropping the palm fronds shed collected in the middle of the clearing. She turned and walked back to the oasis, scanning the ground, looking for more. If she stopped, shed drop. She had to keep going. But by the pain on her feet, she knew shed have blisters in the morning. He looks at you. The unexpected voice made her jump. A young servant girl with kind eyes smiled at her and nodded to the prince. The Viper. Hes watching. Probably making sure Im not dead yet. She laughed. I doubt that. My name is Muretta. Sabine.
42

Nice to meet you. Ive heard things about you. Sabine scoffed. I bet you have. You dont smell very good. Thats an understatement. She rolled her eyes. I mucked out the animals carav today. Is it true you were crushed and Kareems magic saved you? Not knowing how much was safe to tell this girl, she nodded. Yes. But I stole water from this oasis and now I am being punished. Muretta helped her gather more sticks. There wasnt much nearby. She hoped they werent planning on having too big of a fire. You are lucky, Muretta whispered. The Viper has been known to I know what hes done. She didnt want to be reminded. The man was ruthless when he wanted to be, but for some reason, had a soft spot for her. Probably because of all theyd dreamt together. The thought made her blush. If you would like, you can set up your tent next to mine this evening. My tent? After a long day of work, her mind wasnt working like it should. Muretta nodded. Darish will give you a tent now that youre a servant. You can set up by me if you like. Sure. At her next whiff of food, Sabines stomach roared and she was light-headed. She groaned and held onto her head. Are you all right? You look pale. Not wanting to complain, thus gaining more work in the process, Sabine merely did her best to smile. Im fine. Really. The sun hung low on the horizon. It was going to set soon. When do the servants eat, Muretta? she asked, trying to sound nonchalant. Oh, weve eaten already. We eat before we serve the prince. He has always commanded it to be so. Sabine gave her new friend a blank stare. Youre serious? Yes! Darish did not fetch you for supper?
43

Ihe She swooned for a moment and Muretta caught her before she fell over. He comes, stand up, Sabine. The Viper comes! That got her attention. She scrambled to her feet and tried to pick up more sticks. But the act of bending over made the world spin even more. Before she knew it, she fell over into the dirt. Strong arms grabbed her, and she opened her eyes in time to see Tariq leaning over her. I do not believe shes eaten, Your Highness. Murettas voice sounded so far away. Have you eaten? His deep voice made her weak. Dont touch me, she managed to say. His countenance hardened and she heard Muretta gasp. Do not tell me what to do. His tone was dark, dangerous. But Im sostinky. Youll ruin your fine clothes. The whine in her voice must have amused him. His harsh gaze cracked with a grin. Have you eaten? he asked again, his voice gentler. No. But Im so thirsty. May I have a sip from your oasis? Please, just a sip? I didnt take any from the bucket. I didnt. I was good. I did a good job You havent had water today? Once again, his tone was harsh. She flinched. He told me not to. Who? I dont remember his name Darish, Viper. Muretta must still be with them, although Sabine didnt see her. The universe seemed fixed only on Tariqs beautiful face. He brought her to Jalil from the horses carav. Why didnt you eat, Sabine? I didnt know I could. I didnt know who to ask. Karrin brought me to Darish before breakfast and I got to work soon after. And he didnt call you for supper? He told me to collect wood for your bonfire. The world tilted as he stood with her in his arms. She had to close her eyes to keep from blacking out. I am soiling your robes, she moaned.
44

Be quiet. She obeyed with a sigh. It was so good to get off her feet. It was even better to be in Tariqs arms. But he was carrying her across the clearing, past the kitchen carav, in plain view of his people. It didnt dawn on her where he was taking her until he opened the door to his own carriage. Once inside, he closed the door behind him. He brought her to a pedestal of sorts, covered with cloth and pillows. Before she could say a word, his fingertips were at her temples and a buzzing pulsed throughout her body. The smell of her duties faded away, replaced by the fragrance of flowers. What did you do? she asked, glancing down at herself. The clothing that had once been so dirty was now spotless. Her hands were no longer covered in grime, and her hair had smoothed itself within her braid. I have cleansed you, he said, distracted by a pitcher near his feet. The sound of pouring water filled the carriage and her mouth smacked of its own accord. He held up a goblet made of fine glass and ringed on the stem by a golden snake. Sip this, do not gulp. She obeyed him, despite the fact that her body demanded she throw her head back. Cool water slid down her throat. Shed never had the like. It was pure and clean, clearly the best water shed ever had. It seemed to rejuvenate her. Thank you, she whispered. He didnt answer. He merely gave her a critical stare. Stay here. I will be back. He stood, looking down at her like a dark god whod just conquered her. Do not move. He wasnt making a suggestion. He was commanding hershe read it in his eyes. With a nod, she settled back in the pillows with the goblet in her hand. He turned and raced out of his carav, leaving her to glance around at her surroundings. He must have set her on his throne.

Tariq was furious. Not only had Sabine been given one of the dirtiest jobs in the caravan, shed been made to endure it with no food or water. He did not spend his time healing her only to have her in need of Kareems services once more. The desert was an unforgiving place and anyone was in danger should they be without water. Even a miniscule amount could be the difference between life and death. Knowing Sabine had been working hard with nothing to drink scared him more than he wanted to admit. She was from another world and she wasnt used to his harsh climate. He found Darish easily enough; he was helping Jalil with last-minute preparations for the feast now that the sun had set. The fire had been lit and members of his friends and family had begun taking their places while others danced to the lively music. A few smiled and nodded at him, and even tried to strike up conversation. He ignored them. Darish! The man jumped and spun around to face him. Viper! You surprised me. Your seat is ready, Your Highness. If youll follow me I want you to explain to me why you saw fit to work Sabine with no food or water. The mans eyes widened. Well, she is being punished, my prince. Is it your place to punish her? The urge to hit the man overcame him and he took a step closer. Darish must have seen the fury in his eyes. He took a step back. No, Viper. But
46

But nothing. I put her in your care because I trusted you to be fair and just. You, however, have just demonstrated you cannot be trusted. My lord, I She is to work for the caravan, not to be treated like a slave, or worse, like an animal. Did you water the animals today? Of course! Thats more than she received! A hush descended on the clearing. No one spoke, probably to watch him yelling at his head servant. In all his years as the Viper, hed never seen fit to yell at his servants. Theyd always known just what to do. But Darish had crossed the line in taking Sabines punishment upon himself. You will not presume to know how I want her punished. You are no longer my head servant, I will find another. For the next week, you will be spending your time in the Bantiem. A few gasps reached him, but he was beyond caring. Darish was lucky he didnt throw a punch. The man stared at him, as if he wanted to protest, but Tariq knew he wouldnt dare. Not when his temper was so hot. Instead, the man hung his head and nodded. Go. Now. I no longer wish to see your face. The man trotted away. Tariq turned to the bonfire, no longer in the mood to celebrate. Jalil! Yes, Viper? She poked her head out the door of the kitchen carav. Shed probably been listening. Fill a tray with plenty of food. Ill be retiring early this evening. She was silent for a moment before saying, And Sabine? Fill a tray, Jalil, he growled. She didnt waste a moment retreating back within the kitchen. Tariq balled his fists and resisted the urge to tear out his hair. Everyone had seen him carry Sabine to his carriage. No doubt by tomorrow, rumors would fly. He didnt care. Hed squash them. But he had an obligation to make sure everyone in his caravan had food and watereven those being punished.
47

~*~ It was dark when Tariq made his way back to his carav. He had a hard time opening his door and walking up the steps with a tray in his hand, but he managed. At first, fear entered his heart. He didnt know if Sabine had stayed put like he told her. But once hed entered the carriage, the sound of her soft, even breathing warmed him. She must have fallen asleep. He made his way to his throne then put the tray on the floor. With a snap of his fingers, the lamps flanking the room flared to life, revealing a tender scene. Sabine slept on his favorite pillow, the deep red one fringed with gold. Her legs were sprawled over the other pillows, and shed wrapped herself in one of the fabrics he regularly sat on. She was glorious. Even in her braid, her golden hair cascaded over her shoulder. His fingers remembered delving into her tresses not too long ago, in his dreams. But shed denied him last night, claiming their relationship didnt exist. That hadnt stopped him from wanting her, however. His mothers armband had chosen well, and he once again wondered if he should honor his mothers memory and give Sabine a chance. But she was now his servant, and he had Trianna to consider. He had no feelings for Trianna. She was a beautiful girl, with golden eyes and silky black hair reaching to her waist. But hed agreed to his fathers pact with the Jackal because he knew hed need an heir one day. He couldnt stop himself. Tariq reached out and caressed Sabines soft cheek. She mewled softly, and nuzzled her face into his hand. Gods above. His body responded almost violently. Instantly, he was hard. Shivers wracked him, and it was all he could do not to wake her up just to kiss her senseless. But he wanted to do much more than kiss her. What had he gotten himself into? Tariq? Her whispered voice saying his name brought him to his knees. He hadnt given her permission to be so informal, but he never wanted her to stop saying it. Wake up, Sabine, my flower. You need to eat. She rolled onto her back and stretched. When her

eyes cracked open, his heart raced at the downright sexy look she gave him. He was sure she wasnt trying to be so appealing, but he couldnt find the strength to look away. She must have smelled the food. She sat up and stared at the tray. Food. That one word made him smile. I have brought you supper. You must eat. Sabine scrambled off the pedestal and sat next to him, staring at the tray. A few cuts of meat, some fragrant breads, along with his favorite dessert, bractav, lined the plates. He heard her belly growl. She glanced at him, clearly waiting for his approval. Eat, Sabine. She didnt hesitate. The foods disappeared off her plate and into her mouth. Her cheeks puffed with it. He chuckled when she closed her eyes and moaned. After only a few bites, she swallowed. This is so good! Slow down or youll make yourself sick. She glanced at him and his smile widened. He liked providing for her. It filled him with a certain sense of pride. Shed certainly gotten her appetite back since being infirm. Once her plate was almost clean, he stopped her from attacking the bractav. This cannot be scarfed, he said. It must be savored. She looked down at his hand covering hers, but didnt say a word. He saw her blush. Arent you going to eat? she asked. He poured her another glass of water. Yes, but I will see to you first. What is this? she asked, pointing to the flaky dessert. This is called bractav. It is the best I have to offer, my favorite confection. He picked up a piece and offered it to her. She attempted to take it from him, but he denied her. Open your mouth. He raised a brow at her small gasp. Tariq watched as her chest rose and fell, but she didnt deny him. She obeyed. He prolonged putting the treat in her mouth, but he didnt look away. Neither did she. The moment the bractav
49

passed her lips, she gently closed them around his fingers, licking them clean. He couldnt stop his torrid thoughts, even if he wanted to. In that moment, he remembered suckling her nipples in his mouth. Sabine shut her eyes and moaned at the flavor. There was nothing more he wanted to do than to taste the dessert on her lips. Do you like it? He didnt mean for his voice to sound husky, but she knew what he was thinking, hed bet his caravan on it. Theyd been sharing dreams for over three weeks now. She knew his sensual thoughts better than anyone. All she did was nod. I should go. Not yet. Its not proper. Let me worry about what is and is not proper. Your people are no doubt talking about us right this very moment. Her eyes shot up to him, then back down to her folded hands. She took a nervous drink of her water. I do not care. We shouldnt be together like this. I shouldnt be in your carav. You are the prince, I cannot I dont want to be the reason your people disrespect you. You think they would disrespect me? By talking behind your back? You bet! Just my presence here is going to make everyone gossip about what were doing. Sharing a meal? He swept his hand wide, indicating the tray of food. Its more than that, Viper. Her use of his title sounded foreign to him. He didnt like it. You shouldnt have hand-fed me your dessert. I wanted to. I know. But you have to stop. Why? She sighed. I told you why last night. So she did remember their dream. My mothers armband brought you to me, Sabine. You cannot expect me not to be curious. You are being more than curious.
50

He scoffed. I am the prince of this caravan. No one will question me. Maybe not to your face. He stared at her. No other woman in his life had strived so hard to flee him. It made him want to hold on to her all the more. What I do, in this carav, is none of their concern. She stood, trembling. You are only fascinated by me because of the armband. And because of the dreams weve shared. Beyond that, I mean nothing to you. He stood as well, piqued by her words. Is that what you think? She stared at him for so long, he thought she might not respond. I dont know what to think anymore. Everything I ever knew is gone. Tariq stepped around the food and stood before her, watching helplessly as her eyes filled with tears. I dont know what to do, she whispered. He was at a loss. He knew she must be terrified of life on his world, of having no friends, no family. Despite being the one who always solved problems, he wasnt sure how to solve hers. She sprang at him, taking him off guard before her arms curled around his neck. All she did was hold him as she cried, prompting him to pull her closer into his body. He rested his cheek on top of her head and stood, shocked. Im sorry, Viper, she moaned into his shoulder. I shouldnt be touching you without permission. Sabine tried to pull away, but he held her fast. I do not mind. She collapsed against him and let out her fears and anxieties. He tried his best to soothe her with soft words and light touches. He wanted to shield her, protect her from her realitythat shed died in her world and now had nothing more to live for. Thank you, she sniffled. Her soft words reached right inside him and tugged on his heart. For what? he whispered. Caring. With that, she stood on her toes and kissed his cheek. He was so taken aback that his arms dropped and he cupped

his cheek with his palm. Before he could stop her, shed dashed to the door and ripped it open, running into the night. Sabine, wait! He flew down the steps of his carav and scanned the sands, but shed disappeared. He knew where shed gone. The servants tents. If he followed her, hed risk even more gossip and discontent. The Viper Prince, smitten with a servant he was punishing? What if word got back to the Jackal? With a deep sigh, he stared up at the moons. Thiadra and Pamos were close, but they did not touch. Pamos had to chase Thiadra across the sky to catch her. But once he did, they loved each other before moving on. Perhaps in their dreams, he could woo Sabine. He didnt even realize hed made the choice to do so. It still took all his effort to return to his carav and close the door. He remembered every time shed surrendered to him in their dreams. Hed get her to do so again. And he wouldnt stop until she was truly in his arms, naked and begging for his touch.

Sabine couldnt sleep. She wasnt sure she wanted to. With the way shed left Tariqs carav, she knew hed be waiting for her in her dreams. A shiver raced down her spine. Hed fed her his favorite dessert with his own hand. It had been a wonderful explosion of flavor in her mouth, sweet, yet salty at the same time. A strange fruity cream had been inside, bursting onto her taste buds the moment shed taken a bite. Shed seen the look in his eyes when shed moaned at the taste, and knew hed been close to kissing her. She couldnt believe her own audacity at hugging him unprovoked, but she hadnt been able to help herself. Despair had bubbled within her and shed needed a hug, pure and simple. But being in his arms had been almost too much to bear. All hed had to do was tilt her head back and kiss her and shed be putty in his hands. Shed run like a coward, but thankfully, found Muretta easily enough. Shed been waiting for her at the edge of the servants tents. Shed been nice enough to set up a tent for her next to her own, and now, Sabine found herself under a thin blanket with no pillow and the sand for her bed. But she was so exhausted, her eyelids drooped of their own accord, and within no time, she was dreaming. She stood on a dune, looking out upon the desert, bathed in light from the moons above. What were their names? Thiadra and Pamos. Lovers in the night sky. The Vipers caravan was nowhere to be seen, nor was his oasis, but he was there. She could feel him as surely as she felt the cool breeze on her face. Hed probably been
53

waiting for her. Shed denied herself sleep for too long. Your desert is beautiful, she said. Even more beautiful now that you are here. He was behind her. She didnt dare look. It wasnt cold, but she covered her arms with her hands regardless. Her hair was down, and she was wearing a sleeveless, shimmering robe of silk in blue or gray, she couldnt tell which. The outline of the Viper armband was still clearly imprinted on her arm. She rubbed it and looked up at the stars. What are we doing? Dreaming of each other, he said simply, his voice closer now. She swallowed hard. I shouldnt be dreaming of you. But you are. He whispered that in her ear. His warm breath tickled her skin. I dont want to dream of you. You should not lie to your prince. She took a step away and ran her fingers through her hair. She still couldnt find the courage to turn and face him. You want to dream of me, he said, stepping closer. You are just too afraid to do so. She remained silent. You told me you were writing a book about me? In your world? he asked. Yes. What kind of book? Aromance. Between the Viper Prince and his servant. Admitting that to him released all kinds of fluttering butterflies in her stomach. I should wake up. She moved to walk away, but he took her elbow gently. How did it end? That silky voice might as well have caressed her. Sabines nipples were perfect points and she wanted to lose herself in his embrace. Just the heat of his hand was enough to send desire pulsing through her and make her wet for him. I dont know. I never got that far. How did you want it to end? Finally, she turned and looked into his wondrous face, bathed in the soft light of the moons. I cant write how I
54

want it to end. He pulled her closer, drawing her in like a magnet. She didnt resist him. Her body craved his touch. Sabine, he said, his breath warming her face. Why do you keep running from me? You are a prince. You are engaged. I am a servant. I am being punished for stealing from you. I was pulled here against my will, and against yours. Shall I go on? He nodded. Damn him. I am scared to death of falling in love with you. His brows shot up. Good. Shed shocked him. He deserved it. All this time, youve been a character in my book. Ive dreamed of you, naughty things, and fell for you, I admit. I wanted to meet you, but I was being silly, because all of my romance heroes are hotter than hell, of course I want to meet them. But you were a dream. A fantasy. She looked out across the dunes. I looked forward to sleeping every night because I knew Id see you and Well, you know what we did. But now that Im here, Im mortified to know you dreamt those dreams too. You were a real man, right there with me, doing things we had no right to do. She sighed, bringing her gaze back to him. Things arent as simple as they are in my books. Your people look up to you. They respect you. But they wont respect you if you dally with a servant. I deserve your punishment, not your advances. Im not royalty. Im not even of this world. His countenance softened. I dont care. She scoffed. You should! Why? Was he daft? She threw up her arms and stomped away. There, on the crest of the dune, was a huge carpet, woven with red and gold fibers, much like the one in his carav. She made her way toward it. Very strange. Then again, she was dreaming. Did it fly? She turned and sat, giving him one of her best defiant looks. He walked right up to her, gave the carpet a fleeting glance then sat himself. I do not care about spending time with you, Tariq

continued, because my mother sent her armband across the cosmos to find the one woman she wanted me to find. She loved me, Sabine, and wanted only the best for her son. My father was a tyrant and hit her on more than one occasion. I finally put a stop to it when I was old enough, but my mother had made a decision that I would never have a marriage without love. And the only way to do so without my fathers knowledge was through magic. But the band has been gone for many years, Id assumed it would never come back. Yet it did. And here you are. Your mother couldnt foresee that I wouldnt be able to return to my world. Your mother didnt know you would already be promised to another when I arrived. Viper, I dont know what Im doing. Im stuck here, marooned with no way home and no one to cling to. You have clung to me. Do so again. Her breath hitched in her throat at his unexpected words. You are home, Sabine. In my caravan. I will notwatch you marry another. His gaze bored into hers. I am just as confused as you are. I dont know what will happen tomorrow. All I know is that I want you with me. You belong to her. Not yet. The timbre of his voice dropped as he eased forward on his knuckles. She leaned back and let him advance until she lay fully on the carpet. Tariq held his weight above her, but glanced at her mouth. Let me kiss you, Sabine. Our dreams are private. Ill not touch you when we are awake. But I fear I wont be able to stop myself if I resist any further. Her heart thundered in her ribcage. Her will was crumbling. If the man didnt make so much damn sense, she wouldnt be stuck here, looking into his pleading eyes. I am your servant, Viper, I will do as you command. He shook his head and lowered his weight upon her. Tonight Im asking you, not commanding. She thought hed have to kiss her to bend her to his will. She was wrong. He had but to beamazing. He dipped his head until his lips were a breath away from hers.
56

May I touch you? she whispered. He smiled grandly. Anywhere. Lifting her hands, Sabine placed them tentatively on his shoulders. They were powerful beneath her fingertips. She made her way to his neck, where her fingers found their way into his dark hair. He closed his eyes and made a sound deep in his throat. Good Lord, but that sound had her arching against him. Before she knew what she was doing, shed pulled his head to hers. The first contact of his lips sent desire thundering through her. It hadnt been that long, but it seemed like ages since shed been with him, losing herself in his touch. Without his provocation, she opened her legs, allowing him to rest more comfortably on top of her. The moment his tongue dived into her, she bucked, wanting, needing full contact. Shed missed this. Shed forgotten how perfectly her body fit into his. His hands tangled in her hair, holding her head still for his heady advances. Your kisses burn me. He pulled back only to make a path to her ear. She shuddered when his lips tugged at her lobe. I am afraid making love to you would set me afire. His tender words, spoken with such passion, tightened her entire body. Youre not the only one, she said, chuckling. With his attention on her ear, she leaned forward and kissed his neck, tasting him there. His skin was salty-sweet, tempting her to taste the rest of him. With a growl, he surged forward, connecting his cock with her clit. She bit her lip with a gasp. My intention was not to take you. I asked only for a kiss. You dont want to? she said with a pout. She knew she was teasing him, but his kiss seemed to steal her trepidation. He chuckled. I think we both know what I want, Sabine. Maybe we should take things slow. Or hard and fast. His devilish grin made her heart skip a beat. Stroking his cheeks, she gazed at him, trying to memorize the lines of
57

his face. But she knew damn well he was branded on her psyche. You are amazing, she said. Only you would think so. Thats not true. What hed just said shocked her. Youre a caravan prince. Your people think youre amazing. They fear me. They respect me. But no one knows me. The only true friend I have is the Scarab Prince, but it has been months since Ive seen him. Sometimes our paths cross and I can just beme. Youre the only one whos looked past my title, aside from him. You are lonely. It wasnt a question, more like a revelation. More than you know. I was, too. He knit his brows. On my world, I was lonely, too. I write stories. Love stories. But I didnt have anyone to love myself. Id had a string of failed relationships, and God only knows how long its been since Ive been laid. Laid? She chuckled. Been made love to. Maybe thats why I enjoyed dreaming of you. You made my body sing. Mmm, if I made your body sing in your dreams, then imagine what I could do if She stopped him with a finger to his lips. This is all we get. I am not sure this will be good enough, Sabine. I promised not to touch you when were awake, but Im not so sure Ill be able to. Youll have to. He leaned his forehead on hers, trapping her eyes in his gaze. I want to feel you against me. I want your body, not just your dream. I want to taste the flavor of you on my tongue. His dick found her pussy again and he pressed forward, grinding their hips. She moaned and bit her lip, telling him without words that she wanted it, too. You are a prince, I am a servant. What did I do in your book? Her thoughts swirled at his crazy question.
58

Youdidnt care. His triumphant grin stole her breath. Dont even think it. You said it yourself. I am a prince. And your people will It was his turn to place his finger on her lips. They will accept what I tell them, without question. If they dont, punishment will be swift. Viper, listen to me. Tariq, he corrected. She shook her head. You are my prince just as much as you are theirs. You are the Viper. His look darkened. If I am your prince, Sabine, then I command you to come to me. The dream broke and she sat up, gasping for breath. Glancing around, she was disoriented until she realized she was awake in her small tent. It was dawn. And the Viper had given her an order. Oh, dear God.

59

Eight
The morning was hectic. Sabine managed to avoid the Vipers command for the most part. Servants were everywhere, tearing down their tents, preparing to leave the oasis behind on the long journey to Suridesh. Since shed been denied food the day before, the new head servant, Gabril, decided she should work in the kitchen carav. Today, shed help make the food for the people, and serve it while the caravan continued on. Shed have to walk fast to keep up with the creatures pulling the carriages, but it was an adventure, and she hoped she could accomplish it. Before work started, shed taken down her tent as Muretta showed her. The tents were stowed away in the servants carav, which was mainly used as storage for tools, blankets, mats, and tack for the numerous animals. Thankfully, Muretta had also gotten kitchen duty, due to the woman begging the head servant, and the two women had walked down the caravan line, chatting about the beautiful morning. Now, Sabine and Muretta were eating last nights leftovers in a hurried rush to get ready for the days baking. Shed been given a tankard of water, and drank voraciously. With a full belly, she was ready for work in no time. Howd you sleep? Muretta asked, wiping crumbs from her mouth. Sabine almost dropped her water. Uhgood. You? She chuckled. Im sure you slept better than good you spent an age in the Vipers carav! Shh! Glancing around, Sabine was mortified. The last thing she wanted was to gossip about her relationship with
60

the prince. It was nothing. He saw to my care. I needed food and water. It was urgent. Not having water, even for a day in the desert, is very dangerous. Muretta arched her brow. I see the way he looks at you. He doesnt look at me. She scoffed. You are blind if you do not see it. Sabine ignored her comment and stood, taking one last sip of water. The servants are beginning to talk. They say he fancies you. She heaved a sigh and groaned inwardly. She knew this would happen, but had hoped it wouldnt. People were talking about her relationship with the Viper behind his back. I am being punished for my crime of stealing from his oasis. I highly doubt the prince fancies me. Muretta waved her hand as if batting at a fly. As a pretense, nothing more. What did you do in his carav? The eager tone in her voice and the sparkle in her eye annoyed Sabine to no end. None of your business. You two are wasting time! From out of nowhere, someone smacked the back of Sabines head. By the looks of things, they also smacked Murettas. Get to work! It was Jalil. Sabine rubbed her scalp and glared at the womans back, but said nothing. Did he kiss you? Muretta whispered, grinning from ear to ear. Sabine didnt answer and walked to another servant making flat bread. Perhaps if she immersed herself in her work today, she could get the visions of the Viper laying on top of her out of her head. Hed commanded she come to him, but she hadnt. Had he meant right that minute? This evening? Or again when they slept? If his command had been any indication, hed meant for her to come to him for real this time, throw precaution to the wind and become his lover. Even the thought sent shivers down her spine. Thankfully, Muretta dropped the subject and busied herself with what looked like a salad of sorts. All of a sudden, the entire carav lurched, and pots and
61

pans hanging from the ceiling leaned toward the back wall, clanging against each other. Sabine cried out and clutched onto a nearby table before she fell over. Jalil laughed at her, finding her reaction amusing. Sabines face burned bright crimson. The caravan was on the move; they were leaving. To these people, this was commonplace. She tried to reclaim her decorum by grabbing something that resembled an onion and chopping it. But a few of the servants around her chuckled and whispered to each other, pointing and giving her knowing glances. She ignored them, intent on her task. This was going to be the finest minced onion this side of Jikkar. Pots and pans regularly clanged, while Jalil and Muretta scurried around the kitchen as if theyd been born with sea legs. Sabine, however, had to hold on for dear life or risk falling flat on her face. She definitely didnt need any more comedy at her expense. While the flat bread baked, she tried to learn how to make the cream filling of the bractav, but failed miserably. It was too thin and not nearly the tart, yet sweet, flavor she remembered. Jalil shoved her out of the way, intent on doing it herself. The servants shrieked in shock when the door of the carav opened wide, spilling bright sun into the carriage. Sabine turned, only to stare directly into the face of the Viper. He stared right back, unrepentant, and clearly, mad as hell. He didnt say a word. He jumped into the carriage, and with three long strides, he was in front of her, taking the wooden spoon out of her hand. No one moved; no one dared. Sabine was willing to bet the prince had never set foot in the kitchen. The reason why he was in here now was obvious to anyone with half a brain. Sabines knees actually shook. Shed never seen him so determined, so out of control, and it frightened her. Not because she was afraid of him, but because she was sure he was damaging his reputation by caring too much about her well-being. A muscle ticked in his jaw and his eyes narrowed. She
62

wanted to look away, but those amber eyes held her captive, accusing her of defying him. And she had, she couldnt deny it. Shed deliberately fled to the kitchen, looking for work in order to keep herself from his arms. Now, it looked as if she was going to pay the price for that folly. The Viper bent low and grabbed her around the waist. Sabine cried out, obviously shocked that hed throw her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes. She smacked him a few times while the audible gasps of the servants reached her ears. Put me down. Put me down right now! Ladies, he said ominously, turning to take his leave. No. This wasnt happening. This wasnt bloody happening! He jumped out the carav, hitting the sand with a catlike grace. Striding with confidence, he made his way to his carriage, easily walking faster than the beasts pulling their burden. Viper, please, put me down. He wasnt listening. Or he didnt care. Please! A few folks walking alongside the caravs watched their prince with curiosity. She had no choice but to hold on and wait until he came to his senses. By the time hed reached his private carav, her temper had worked up steam. Jumping on the steps, he opened the door and easily waltzed right in. It was dark, but the sun streaming through slats in the wall gave the room a soft glow. She had to blink a few times before she was used to the low light. With a heave, he pushed her off his shoulder and she thumped to the floor, finding herself lying at his feet, surrounded with colorful pillows. His chest rose and fell with his exertion, but his eyes never left her, shooting sparks. Viper Dont say a word. She sat there, struck by his stormy demeanor before she found her courage. No. Planting her feet, she stood and glared at him. How dare you make a fool out of me?
63

How dare I? He put his hand on his chest. You did not obey me. That doesnt give you the right to toss me over your shoulder! Does it not? He shook his head and scoffed. Thats when he advanced. Having all that man coming right for her made Sabine take a few tentative steps back. I am the prince of this caravan. Everything and everyone are under my command. It must be this way, for the protection of my people. And I dont dispute that. But do you know what you just did? Of course I know. I searched high and low for you. When you didnt come at first light, I thought perhaps you were getting ready. When you didnt come at breakfast, I thought maybe you wanted to make sure youve eaten. It wasnt until later I realized you had no intention of coming to me. She bumped into his pedestal throne and fell onto her butt. But he kept on coming. Planting his hands on either side of her hips, he leaned in close. She had nowhere to go. The far wall of his carav was on the other side. Youyou just confirmed in everyones mind exactly what they suspect! I cant believe you carried me out of the kitchen like aa caveman. The whole caravan will know by sundown. He shook his head. Likely the whole caravan knows already. Jalil is very talented in conveying her thoughts to others. Great. Just friggin great! Why dont we open your door and invite them all in here to watch? His mouth twitched into the slightest grin before he hid it, replaced by a scowl. You have told me, on more than one occasion, you belong to me. You have also told me I am your prince, just as much as I am the prince of my people. She closed her eyes and groaned. She knew where his argument was going. Am I not to conclude that you willingly defied a direct order? Her eyes snapped open. He cocked a brow and gave
64

her a predatory grin. I am not a slave. Her voice was barely above a whisper. No, you are not, he agreed, giving her that much. But when a servant is being punished for a crime, they are expected to jump when their prince says jump. You, my flower, did not jump. Her mouth went dry when he eased onto his knees before her. Perhaps I must change your punishment. Perhaps you do not yet understand you must bow to my will. His hands slipped underneath her robes. He untied her sandals and tossed them aside. Oh, Lord, he was caressing her calves. She attempted to clamp her legs shut, but he eased his big body between them, hampering her efforts. No, Sabine. Youve opened for me before. Open again. His voice was gentle. She knew he was proving a point. He was her prince. She must listen to him. But these commands had nothing to do with her safety or the hierarchy of the caravan. I will make you beg me. A whimper escaped her. She was wet. Damn, the man had barely touched her and she was ready for him. His hands wandered higher, to her knees, and he brought her robes up with them, exposing her to the cool air. Viper His eyes burned with passion. They scorched her. I will make you say my name when you beg me. She shuddered and eased her head back on a pillow. What are you doing to me? Punishing you. She hissed her breath when his palms eased up her inner thighs. The heat of him left a trail of fire on her skin. More than anything in the world, she wanted him to touch her. There. But his hands advanced only to retreat back to her knees. Her groan of disappointment echoed across the carav. This was more than her dreams. More sensation. More intensity. She thought shed felt him then. But that had only been a mere shadow of the reality. When his fingertips
65

clawed her skin, making small valleys on her thighs, she could have sworn shed died and gone to Heaven. But the moment his bearded face disappeared between her legs, she gasped when all he did was place open-mouthed kisses right where her thighs met her pussy. His tongue danced on her, but not where she wanted him to be. With one tug, he ripped her panties from her bodythe one and only pair shed brought with her from Earth. The fleeting thought of what was she going to wear now was born, then died the moment his fingers caressed her lower lips. You are a desert bloom after a rainstorm. The awe in his voice brought tears to her eyes. But he still didnt give her what she wanted. What she needed. You glisten for me, Sabine, like the waters of my oasis. She clutched onto his pillows with a vengeance. If he didnt touch her, and soon, shed come at his words alone. Maybe that was his plan all along. He said he wanted her to beg. Please, she whispered, refusing to look at him. He ignored her. His thumbs stroked her folds before opening them wide, revealing to him her innermost secrets. Her gasp lifted her halfway off his throne. She was so close. So very close Viper, please. He still didnt answer. She knew what he wanted. But it was too intimate. Shed once made the mistake of saying his name aloud without his permission. Now, however, his permission was given. All she had to do was say it, and hed give her everything she asked him for. No, everything she begged him for. The moment he blew his hot breath on her damp clit, she came. Her hips rose of their own accord, but he still refused to give her what she wanted. Sabine. His deep voice was a reminder of what he was doing, establishing his dominance and making her admit she wanted him as much as he wanted her. But the moment she said his name, she knew her heart would be his. Im scared, she admitted. You have nothing to fear while Im holding you. Oh, God. Another shudder rippled through her. But
66

what if One of his fingers barely traced the line of her pussy before delving within. It was gone within seconds. She cried out at its loss. I will not hurt you. Once again, his finger stroked her clit, relieving her ache. Then it was gone. Please She couldnt help the sob that escaped her. Tell me, Sabine. His voice was filled with such tenderness, hed clutched her heart. She was hanging on by a thread. How was her sanity intact? Perhaps it wasnt. With one velvet swipe, his tongue entered her, only to disappear before shed realized it was there. Say my name. Another sob ripped from her throat. There was no other choice but surrender. Tariq! Make me yours. Please. Please? Sweet, merciful God. She sniffled and opened her eyes, only to see him leaning over her. He didnt gloat, he didnt grin, all he did was kiss her, hard and deep, bringing forth a groan from her throat. Her tongue tangled with his. This was what she wanted. Him. Just him. He ripped his mouth away to growl, Say it again. She hesitated for only a moment. Tariq. Dont stop. In an instant, he was gone, feasting deeply between her legs. God, oh God, oh God Sabines world revolved around his mouth. His tongue glided on her slick skin and she cried out, so very sensitive from her previous orgasm. Stars lit behind her eyes and she clutched onto the fabrics surrounding his throne with a vengeance. He lapped, suckled and groaned on her clit, lending the vibration of his voice to her pleasure. Within seconds, she exploded again, unable to stop the tears that streamed down her face. This was so much more than anything shed ever experienced. This was powerful. Perfect. Tariq gently lowered her from his throne onto the pillows at its base and tugged her robes up and over her head. Without a word, her breast was in his mouth. Her body trembled, naked underneath him, as she threaded her hands through his glorious hair.
67

I want to touch you, she whispered. I want to feel you. His teeth played with her nipple, inciting gasps from her. Give me what I want and I shall give you what you want. His gaze pinned her to the floor. She was helpless to resist him. Tariq, I beg you, take off your robes, my prince. By the look on his face, he wasnt as cool and collected as he pretended to be. She had a suspicion her plea had broken his control. Within seconds, he bared his body to her. She remembered his chest from her dreams, but shed never once gotten a clear view of his cock. And wow, was he ever endowed. She squirmed on the pillows, trying to find air with which to breathe. Tariq Sayed was perfectly made, a god among men. How is it possible you havent wed yet? She hadnt meant to voice her thoughts. But his pleased grin had her melting right there on the floor. Ive been promised to Trianna for years now. Ive been putting her off. Perhaps I was waiting. The reminder that he was engaged should have cooled her ardor, but she felt a fierce jealousy instead. The moment he crawled over her, she opened her legs for him, but pushed at his shoulders to keep him from continuing. Do you love her? She needed to know. She was terrified of his answer. All he did was shake his head. Her relief was so great, she closed her eyes and sighed brokenly. Then what were you waiting for? His mouth explored her neck. She turned her head to allow him to taste her. That damn armband, he murmured. I knew my mother wouldnt fail me. The moment he bit her, she shivered from head to toe and a fresh wetness rushed from her pussy. She wanted him thrusting inside her more than anything in the world. Framing his face in her hands, she gave him a tender kiss, taking her time, stroking his tongue with her own. He leisurely slicked his cock on her clit, making her body jump
68

at the sensation. You were waiting for me. He nodded. For you, Sabine. Tariq? Yes, my flower? The way he said that in her ear prompted her to touch him wherever she could reach. His skin was soft and warm under her fingertips. I am sorry I didnt come to you this morning. Forgive me. He chose that moment to plunge deeply into her, swallowing her cry with his mouth. Lifting his lips slightly, he murmured, You are forgiven. The fullness of him was divine. Pushing his hips, he pressed against her, advancing even more until his entire length was inside. Then he stopped. Sabines eyes fluttered open, only to catch his amber gaze. But I will still make you beg. Her body squirmed beneath him, trying to make him move. But he was a rock, seemingly undeterred by her efforts. His large hands took hers and pressed them above her head. She was dizzy, still amazed hed defied convention to be with her. His cock touched her womb, making her buck and want to feel it again and again. But he pressed her down with more force, effectively making her movements futile. Anger rose within her and she fought him, acutely aware she was no match for his strength. All he did was smile down at her, infuriating her even more. Let me go, Viper. His eyes narrowed a moment before he pulled back and thrust forward forcefully. You know thats not what I want to hear. Is that so, Viper? He thrust again. Ecstasy, thats what it was. She was half inclined to keep teasing him. But he was onto her. With a wicked grin, he pulled out of her pussy, shocking her with his apparent disregard for his own pleasure. What are you doing? Her voice sounded panicked,
69

but she was beyond caring. You will not get what you want until I get what I want. Those damned words again. You are denying yourself as well, she told him. His mouth caught hers in a fierce struggle for power. His tongue stabbed her, and she stabbed back, trying to tell him without words that she wasnt pleased by his play. She turned her head, but wherever she went, he followed. When he spoke, there was a smile in his voice. You have already said my name. Can you not say it again? You first. His eyes darkened a moment before his cock stroked her wet folds. Sabine. That was it. Shed lost the battle against his sensual assault. Tariq. Make love to me. Right now. I need you. I nee His lips cut her off and once again he was inside her. But this time, he strained against her until her hips followed his rhythm. In and out he plunged, lifting her to receive him. His mouth was an inferno, demanding her submission while submitting to her in kind. His thrusts became so furious, she thought his entire carav had to be shaking from the force. But it only served to drive her mad with yearning as she strained for release. Look at me, he demanded. Let me see your pleasure. His words heightened her arousal and she opened her eyes without a word. His face was so beautiful with his eyes laced with passion and his mouth slightly open. The man was exquisite, so much more amazing than any of her dreams. Tell me you are mine. His whispers brought her to the brink and finally pushed her over. Holding his gaze, she came, powerfully and completely, circling his waist with her legs. I belong to you. Just you, Tariq. Kiss me. Once again, his lips crushed hers as he found his own pleasure. He ground hard against her while his growls only served to prolong her own orgasm. With a few more deep thrusts into her wet pussy, their dance was complete, and he rested fully upon her. Crackles of electricity pulsed along her skin and her
70

bones were like jelly. Shed never had better sex. If his shudders were any indication, Tariq hadnt either. You are never leaving this carav. His voice still managed to raise every hair on her body. But No, Sabine. You will stay with me. I am your servant. I am still under punishment. Until Suridesh, that was the agreement. Tariq slowly nodded. Until Suridesh. She cupped his cheek, knowing full well hed just amended their agreement to suit his purpose. But she couldnt find it within herself to be mad at him. Not after his magnificent loving. She nodded as well. You are my prince. I cannot deny you. No, he said with a kiss and a grin. You cannot.

Tell me about yourself. Sabine lay on Tariqs plush carpet and looked into his eyes. He leaned on one elbow beside her, unashamed of his nakedness. Shed given him a few bold perusals, allowing him to do the same, and was surprised to find she wasnt ashamed to bare herself completely before him. Perhaps it was his own easy attitude that gave her courage, but she suspected it was due to all the erotic dreams theyd shared. She might have only just met him, but their mutual dreams seemed to connect them on another level. Well, she answered, Im an only child. My mother was French and my father was half Spanish on my grandfathers side. Of course, that probably doesnt mean anything to you. He grinned and her heart skipped a beat. Continue. In school I was always teased for my name. Why? It is a lovely name. When the other kids are named Jason and Jennifer, Sabine Santiago stands out. A few of my high school friends told me with a name like that, I should become a romance author. We always had a good laugh about it, until I tried writing a romance. I was good. So I wrote a book, sent it in, and it got published. After that, I realized I really loved writing books. So I wrote more. Got a few fans and a few snarky reviews. And your parents? Were they proud? They were. My mother especially. She loved my novels and peddled them from coast to coast. His face twisted with confusion. Coast to coast? What
72

does that mean? She gazed at him, suddenly aware he had no idea about Earth. My world, its covered in water. Only about a third of the planet is land. We have our deserts, like Jikkar, but we have more temperate climates as well. We get our water from rain, from mountain springs, and freshwater lakes and rivers. He stared at her with his brows raised and his mouth wide open. He tried to speak, but no words came out. She laughed at him. Yes, my world is covered in water. But its mostly salt water and you cant drink that. There have been a few people adrift on the ocean, surrounded by water, whove died of thirst. Your worldis covered in water? The awe in his voice was obvious. She smiled at him and stroked his bearded cheek. Yes, my prince. Your people must be fabulously wealthy! No wars, no famine. Food must be bountiful, enough for all. Fountains of water must flow for every family! Dont go getting crazy ideas, now, she said with a chuckle. We have our fair share of all of that. But we dont use water as our source of wealth. We use money. Money? She nodded. Our governments print money on paper and we trade that for goods. But you are right in thinking we have fountains of water. That is how my people bathe. We have showers and baths, and running faucets. Water at our fingertips. Tariq looked away and stared out one of the slats on the wall. The red silks draping the room bathed the light with a red glow. The afternoon sun heated up his carav, but not as much as she thought it might. She wondered if his magic had anything to do with that. When he looked back at her, moisture was in his eyes. Sabine, I am so sorry. It was her turn to sit up on her elbow. For what? You lived in paradise and Ive stolen you from it. Her heart broke just a little. He was honestly upset. It was far from a paradise, Tariq, believe me. Now you must live here, a world with barely enough water to sustain its people. The only reason any of them
73

survive is due to the desert princes. She broke his eye contact and stared at his hands. I will miss hot showers. How do your people bathe? We cleanse with magic. It has always been so. Magic doesnt exist on my world. He gently scoffed. Magic exists across the universe. Perhaps your people just havent learned. Or else theyve forgotten. She shrugged, still avoiding his eyes. The reminder of being on his world for the rest of her life had stolen the wind from her sails. Shed been deliriously happy mere moments before. Now, however, she was homesick. Shed never again see the sunset over the ocean. Never again stand in the forests of Oregon. Never again frolic in the snow. Never again see her friends and family. She covered her mouth and tried to turn away. Tariq stopped her. Sabine. He knew the reason for her tears. Come here. His arms enfolded her. She melted into his warmth and pressed her face against his chest. He lay there, without saying a word, merely kissing her forehead. Im going to miss it. I know. So much! I know. His breath ruffled her hair. She leaned back to look into his beautiful eyes. What am I going to do? Im so damn terrified, Tariq. What will happen to me? I will protect you. Pushing away from him, she sat up and brought her knees to her chest. Wrapping her arms around her legs, she leaned her forehead on them. For now. Youll protect me for now. Until Suridesh. Silence filled the carav until Tariq sighed deeply. I will make sure you have a home. I will not merely drop you off and leave you. Yes, you will. She didnt voice her thoughts, but that was exactly what he was going to do. He was going to marry his desert princess and continue on his journey without her. A shudder ripped through her.
74

His hand roamed up and down her back in an effort to soothe her. It worked, somewhat. Perhaps he wouldnt marry Trianna. Now that theyd made love, maybe his intentions had changed. What are you going to do? she asked. About what? His voice was gentle. She sighed with pleasure when his hand tucked her hair behind her shoulder. Goosebumps raced up her arms when he began caressing her neck and cheek. About Trianna? About me? I do not know. He didnt seem inclined to continue talking. You dont love her. I do not. But we have been promised to each other for many years. It is time I have an heir. You want a son. Of course. What prince wouldnt want to continue his line? Yes. And Trianna is the daughter of the Jackals younger sister. She is royal blood. The union would strengthen both of our caravans. Our son would be the next Viper Prince, and yet, he would also hold sway over the Jackals oasis. He wouldnt rule over it, but he would be able to drink from it or allow anyone of this caravan to do so as well. That is a great honor. Sabines heart bottomed out inside her chest. This was all she was gettinga few weeks in Tariqs carav as his lover. The way he spoke of a future son with ties to the Jackal Prince meant hed thought about it for some time. Now that the armband had brought her to Jikkar, he no longer had to wait to start his family. In Sabine, his curiosity had finally been satisfied. It was time to do his duty. She tried hard to hide her despair from him. She felt as if she was circling a black hole and in just a few weeks, shed drop in and never emerge. This saddens you. She didnt look at him again. She merely hugged her knees and stared straight ahead. I am not royalty, I am your servant. I have nothing to offer you but this. Your choice is clear. Is it? What will happen if you refuse to marry her?
75

My tentative relations with the Jackal will be strained. He does not agree with the way I rule. He has slaves, not servants. They are whipped if they do not obey. In extreme cases, hes been known to do much more than that. She gasped and looked back at him. He sounds like a monster. Tariq nodded. But he has an honorable son who is thinking of challenging his father for the throne when he comes of age. If he succeeds, an alliance with the Jackal Prince will be most advantageous, as his is the closest oasis to mine. Sabine stayed silent for a long while, basking in the way Tariqs fingers were now brushing her long hair. I am different than other women of your world. Ive noticed. She smiled at his humor. Do you think my coloring isappealing? What do you think? He bent forward and kissed her shoulder. I havent seen anyone else with blue eyes or blonde hair, though. What are you getting at? Im wondering if She swallowed hard. Im wondering if someone else willlike it. His fingers faltered then continued. It is not proper for you to talk of other men while youre naked in my carav. His words were harsh, but his strokes were soft, contradicting each other. Im sorry. I might have to punish you again. She smiled at his tone. I like your punishments. He took his arm and curled it around her, pressing her back onto the plush carpet. Placing his elbows on either side of her head, he leaned half his body over hers. Sabine, he began. You are welcome to stay in my caravan. After Suridesh. And you will no longer be my servant. She closed her eyes to shut out the image of him hovering above her. I cant. I wouldnt be able to watch you with her, day after day. Knowing you were with her, making a family with her. She opened her eyes once more. And I
76

dont think youd want to see me with someone else either. He swallowed hard. When the time comes, well have to make a clean break, Tariq. Her heart screamed at her. How could she ever let this man go? It does not have to be that way. I would take care of you. I have no doubt of that. But imagine seeing me with another man, knowing I was retiring to his carav every night. That I was in his arms, not yours. Loving him. Do not speak of such things. A sudden fury crossed his features. I will not allow it. Sabine lifted a shaking hand to his hair, tucking it behind his ear. I wont obey you on that command, Viper. Shed deliberately said his title, if only to drive her point home. You think you are the only one whod like a son someday? His silence was proof enough he hadnt thought of that. She smiled at him through the mist in her eyes. Dont worry about that, she told him. Think about this. Lifting off the carpet, she pressed her lips to his in a gentle kiss. She arched into him, suddenly needing his touch on her skin. His hands were on her in an instant, teasing her nipples and smoothing across her belly in a downward path. His tongue invaded her mouth while he nudged her knees apart. Sabine wished she could spend the rest of her life with the Viper, but that was only in her dreams. Three weeks was the reality.

What are you doing here? Kareem scoffed. I have come to free you. The Viper sent you to free me? The Viper is indisposed at the moment. Since you and I have similar views, I have come to make you a proposition. The man sitting in the small cell stared at him. Kareem had snuck into the Bantiem. Hed waited until the middle of the night before he confronted Darish. He couldnt afford to be caught. You realize youll be punished for going against the Viper? Darish stared at him with a critical eye. Kareem crossed his arms. Of course I know. But it is not the Viper I serve. Instantly, Darish was on his feet. Curling his hands around the bars that held him, he swallowed hard. Then whom do you serve? The Jackal. With a grin, Kareem decided he liked power. And his prince had promised more than his fair share. He has bid me to watch the Viper and report to him his every move. Since my hawk has yet to return after giving my last report, I am sending you in its stead. Darish looked confused. Me? I do not serve the Jackal. Kareem narrowed his eyes. You do now. Is that a threat? Magic lit in Kareems hand, illuminating his face in a soft white light. Everyone knew he was an experienced mage. Hed always been fascinated with the way the human
78

body worked, and he had many ways of making people welljust as he knew many ways to make them sick. And that had been the promise of the Jackal. The older prince was fascinated by others pain. Kareem was only too willing to indulge him. In return, hed become the most feared mage in the Golden Desert. It is a fact, Kareem said with a sneer. You cannot be allowed to live now that you know I do not serve the Viper. If you value your life, you will serve the Jackal as well. Besides, your prince is now lying with the bitch who stole water from his oasis. Do you want to serve such a man? One who does not live up to the name of his father? One who breaks his betrothal to the Jackals own niece? Sabine shares his carav? Darishs voice sounded strained. Kareem nodded. The Jackal must know Vipers distracted from marrying his niece. The Viper has put off Trianna for far too long. Sabine must be removed. I do not believe you. My prince has better judgment than to dally with a thief. With a wave of his hand, Kareem showed him in his head the scene Jalil had so freely shared with almost everyone else in the caravan, of the Viper barging into the kitchen carav and carrying Sabine out over his shoulder. Darish gasped loudly. Kareem nodded. This must be stopped. Surely even you can see this. Silence stretched between them. Kareem let the man think on it, but knew hed bend to his will or he would die. If I agree, I refuse to be a slave in Jackals caravan. I demand better. You are not in a position to make demands. Am I not? Darish asked, arching a brow. You have no other way to alert your prince to the Vipers indiscretions. I have it on good authority that a large hawk was slaughtered for Vipers banquet. Kareem was taken aback. Hed enjoyed the meat from that banquet as much as everyone else. Clearing his throat, he ran his hand down his face. All right. I am sure the Jackal will see fit to reward you handsomely for this information. That is, if youre willing to take it to him.
79

Darish gave him a slow nod. I believe Sabine has bewitched the Viper. How do you propose we deal with her? No doubt the Jackal will send a raiding party to take care of this woman. But once you are freed, you are never to come back. If you do, I have no doubt you will be killed for your escape, and if you try to bring me down with you, I will deny ever having spoken with you. The Viper will believe his esteemed physician over his escaped prisoner any day. With a flick of Kareems wrist, Darishs cell door unlocked and swung open. I have prepared a horse for you. Best you start your journey. The Jackals caravan is to the west. You will surely see it after a few days. He is traveling to his oasis as we speak. Darish hesitated for the slightest moment then stepped out of his cell. Kareem smiled in triumph. ~*~ They were dreaming. Tariq knew it the moment he opened his eyes to find they were sitting together on the very same red and gold carpet from their previous dream. Once again, it was nighttime. The orbs of the two moons hung low in the sky. Sabine rested her head on his shoulder and sighed. Your moons are lovers, right? Thiadra and Pamos, he answered. She nodded. Thats right. They chase each other across the sky, but only touch once a month. It is said those who make love when the moons are together are richly blessed. Sabine turned to him, and he thought hed fall into her blue depths. Her eyes were so unique, so expressive, and gave character to the rest of her delicate face. Imagining this woman in another mans arms made his blood boil. The smile she gave him did nothing to cool his jealousy. They are touching right now, Tariq. The way she said his name had his heart quickening. Hed never been so affected by a woman. They are. In our dreams, anyway. They are not touching in the waking world. She looked away. Youre saying if we make love in our dream, we will only be blessed in our dreams?
80

Perhaps, he said, looking up himself. He wished things were simpler. His mother had intended her armband to show him the woman he was meant to be with. He trusted his mothers magic. But marriage to Trianna would strengthen the bonds between two caravan princes. Could he throw away the security of his people on the whim of his heart? Where is the Viper constellation? she asked him, glancing at the stars. Half the year, the Viper, the Scarab, and the Spider constellations were visible in the sky. The other half of the year, the sky was filled with the Jackal, the Cobra, and the Falcon. It had long been believed the gods put the constellations in the sky to remind their princes they watched over them. Scanning the horizon, he found it, the line of ten stars that twisted into the form of a snake. There. He pointed to the right. Sabine followed his gaze. Its more beautiful than I imagined. Each star appears to be a different color. And each constellation points you in the direction of that princes oasis. She was silent for a moment. All this time weve been dreaming of each other Have you ever noticed the moons being in a different position? Once again, he gazed up at the lovers. No. She was silent for a moment. I have an idea. The sudden excitement in her voice got Tariqs attention. What? She gestured at the carpet. On my world, we have a myth about magic carpets that can fly. He arched a brow, but smiled. Oh? With a nod, Sabine said, This is a dream. We should be able to do anything we want. I suppose we could Hang on. She closed her eyes and concentrated. Within moments, the carpet rose from the dune, completely rigid, giving them a platform of sorts to hover above the sand. Sabine, is this safe? Probably not, she answered with a grin. But this is a dream, after all. I dont think we can hurt ourselves. Lets
81

have a little fun! Before he could answer, the carpet shot out across the desert. The wind in his hair was magnificent and he laughed in spite of himself. Dunes sped by as the landscape rushed at them. Sabines delighted squeals had him laughing all the more. Hed never experienced anything like this, soaring over the land like a falcon in the sky. Sabine took the carpet higher until he could swear all he had to do was reach out to touch the heavens. The freedom was exhilarating, and the joy on Sabines face filled him with fierce possessiveness. He wanted to keep her. He wanted her with him always. Knowing she wanted a son made him fantasize theyd have one together. Once the idea of a son with Sabine entered his mind, it took root and wouldnt leave. It appealed to him more than he ever thought possible. His people might not approve at first, but hed make them accept the fact that shed be their princess. The moment she glanced back at him with a grin, he took advantage. Her lips were cool under his and she opened for him almost immediately. The contrast of her hot tongue excited him, and he couldnt help but lean her back to cover her with his body. Had he made his choice? He had no idea. All he knew was he wanted Sabine, not Trianna. Her fingers in his hair, holding him close, told him of her feelings for him. Time and again shed refused to continue on in his caravan. She was right, there was no way he could watch her loving another man. She had been meant for him, from the moment she put on the armband. Could he disrespect his mothers memory and let Sabine go? Could he disrespect Sabine, knowing shed died in her world in order to be with him? Tariq. Her whisper shattered his thoughts. He wasnt going to worry about it. Not now. Not when she willingly opened her legs to have him settle on top of her. This wont be enough for me, my flower, he groaned, pressing against her hips. Not when I know what it feels like to truly make love to you. But we are flying across the sky. The lovers are

touching. I do not care. I much prefer the reality of you to these dreams. Her shuddering breath rippled through him. Then wake up, Tariq. Wake up. He struggled against sleep, but once his eyes cracked open, he turned to the woman in his arms. The carav was dark, but he knew her body well. His lips found hers, waking her up little by little, until his flower bloomed beneath him, opening her arms, her legs, and her heart to the Viper. A hunger overcame him, one only Sabine could fill. The moment she was fully awake, she took hold of his face, demanding his kisses. His tongue plunged deep. He wanted to memorize the taste, the very essence of her. Hed thought bractav was his favorite delicacy? No. It was her. She melted in his mouth, making him starve for more. Sabine, he whispered, tearing his lips from hers. She leaned up to suckle the skin of his neck and shoulders. Hed forgotten what he wanted to say. Yes, my prince? Her acceptance of him drove him wild. Spreading her legs wide with his, he rejoiced as he slid against her pussy, already wet with wanting. I want you, he said. I know, she teased. Her teeth and tongue played with his earlobe. It was all he could do to command his control. I want you forever. She stopped her ministrations to look him in the eye. Her silence urged him on. I have never felt so connected to a woman. You think of my people before yourself. You think of my reputation as prince of this caravan. You are beautiful, and unless Im mistaken, you have feelings for me. And we both wish to start a family. I cannot throw away my mothers last gift to me. She has been the only woman to truly love me. Casting you aside would be disrespecting not only her gift, but you as well. You died to come to Jikkar. She shook her head. Tariq, no. What of your engagement? What of Trianna and the Jackal? You will break
83

the ties between your caravans. He grinned and chuckled. I dont care. You should care! Her angry voice shocked him. What I care about, my flower, is you. Her eyes widened. But I havent been here for long. How can you throw your alliance awayon me? The Jackal is an ass, Sabine. When I was a child, he used to kick me when my father wasnt looking. I never trusted the way his eyes sparkled whenever he looked at my mother. He shook his head at the memory. As an adult, I decided to give the man a chance. Perhaps my opinion of him had been jaded as a young boy. I have only met Trianna on two occasions. Both times, she has been loud and annoying, breaking down in tears to get what she wants of her uncle. I fear in being her husband, I would only shackle myself to a shrew. He tucked her hair behind her ear and continued. The alliance with the Jackal is advantageous, yes, but not something I cannot live without. The Scarab and I are good friends, and I also have pleasing friendships with the Spider and the Falcon. The tie to the Jackal was an effort to reach out to a man I have never been close to. His niece was the only natural-born princess of the Golden Desert. One of the princes is already married and one is too old, although he wouldnt mind being shackled with Trianna if it meant shed warm his carav. What happens to her? If you no longer want her, what happens to Trianna? I do not know, nor do I care. The woman is not my concern, and if I have my way, which I shall, she will never be my concern. Tariq, you need to think about this, really think before you make a decision of this magnitude. Weve only just begun to be intimate. You might have a different frame of mind in the light of dawn. No, I will not change my mind. I have told you that you will never leave my carav. I meant that. As soon as we reach Suridesh, I will ask the Scarab to perform the ceremony and have us wed. He should be resting in the tent city. Besides, he has had feelings for Trianna ever since he was a boy. The Scarab will be overjoyed at the news.
84

How do you know? The Scarab has been my closest friend for years. It pained him greatly when my father accepted the Jackals offer to give Trianna to me, but he didnt hold it against me. I never knew her as well as he did, but it would seem she hasnt always been a shrew. However those reasons are enough to sway me away from marrying her. Sabine swallowed hard. He kissed her rapid pulse with a grin on his face. Now that hed made the decision, it was as if a weight had lifted from his shoulders. There hadnt been a choice at all. This was the woman he wanted for the rest of his days. You will be my wife, Sabine. The Viper Princess. The mother of my children. No other man will touch you while I live and breathe, I promise you that. Her eyes filled with tears that spilled over into her glorious hair. Tariq, please dont tease me. Are you serious? Do you truly want me? Without holding back, he thrust forth, into her pussy, and grunted loudly as her heat scorched his cock. She threw back her head with a cry of her own. Yes, Sabine. You have been mine for some time. I will no longer be a coward. I am claiming you. He plunged again and again, taking it slow this time, showing her just how much he cared for her with each measured stroke. With a few passionate kisses, she surrendered to him, and her hands flew all over his body. I dont want to lose you, she whispered heatedly in his ear. You wont. I will never let you go. Promise me. Tariqs pleasure crested and he growled against her mouth, inhaling her own pleasured breaths as her body pulsed around his cock. I promise. His pants ruffled her hair. I promise. She didnt answer. All she did was wrap herself around him and tuck her head into his shoulder. After a few moments of silence, her hold on him tightened. He had no idea how long they lay holding each other in the dark, but he swore to himself, then and there, that she would never leave his arms.

Tariq spent the next few days showing Sabine his caravan. They were on the move, but that didnt stop him from leading her here and there, making sure she met his extended family. Shed been apprehensive leaving his carav, wondering what the others must think, but hed insisted. She couldnt resist him when he smiled so boyishly at her. He was excited, truly giddy whenever he introduced her as his intended. Of course, his family members, many distant cousins for the most part, gave her knowing glances. They knew damn well what Tariq had done to her in the kitchen. Shed been right in assuming that juicy bit of gossip had spread like wildfire. The fact that he was now introducing her as the next Viper Princess shocked some, but not others. A few even invited them for dinner and vocalized their distaste for the Jackals niece, while hailing Tariqs choice. But not everyone was happy for their prince. When theyd toured the servants tents before the caravan moved on one morning, some of the servants grumbled, but no one dared utter a bad word against her. Only Muretta seemed genuinely happy. While Tariq was conversing with his new head servant, shed poked Sabine in the ribs. I told you he looked at you! I didnt know he felt so strongly for me. We all saw it, even if you did not. I still cannot believe the choice he has made. Muretta nodded. I dont think anyone can, but he is the Viper. His word is law. No one will dare defy him, except, perhaps, the Jackal. I do not envy your intended the visit he
86

will now have to pay him. Sabine rubbed her arms despite the heat of the day. Yes, I told him as much. Im sure the Jackal will be furious. Indeed. After an uncomfortable silence, she asked, What is to be expected of me? Muretta smiled. The Viper Princess is expected to be beautiful and provide the prince his heirs. Thats it? Wives of the desert princes are highly revered, Sabine. They are looked upon as the mother of the entire caravan. You will be well-protected and well-cared for and, if youre a generous and giving princess, you might even be more respected than your husband. They both glanced at Tariq and giggled. Hed apparently heard them, and turned. Half of his mouth curled into a sexy grin, sending a thrill through Sabines entire body. Shed made love to him. Many times. And not just in her dreams. There are many servants who fancy him, Sabine. You are a lucky woman. She couldnt argue with her friends words. The man was magnificenteverything shed ever wished and hoped for. She thought hed want to keep their engagement a secret for a little while longer, but no, he showed her off to one and all. But it was probably for the better. The longer she was in the shadows, the longer the gossip would fester, and perhaps the caravan wouldnt be so open and welcoming. But the fact that Tariq had carried her into his quarters not once, but twice, in front of everyone, actually worked in Sabines favor. The women shed met looked at her with something akin to jovial envy, as if they wished their husbands would toss them over their shoulders a time or two. Even Jalil, the head cook, had bowed to her with a grin on her face. She wouldnt dare voice her digs on Sabine in front of the Viper, but Sabine knew what the woman was thinking, if only by that twinkle in her eye. Shed blushed, but inclined her head as she took the womans hand, wanting a clean slate with everyone.
87

Only Kareem, Tariqs physician, seemed agitated by the news. But he soon recovered, and wished them all the best. Karrin had pulled Sabine aside and begun discussing wedding gowns, which of course, would have to be designed and sewn in Suridesh. Without being able to get a word in edgewise, Sabine listened to all the womans ideas. When her gaze caught Tariqs, Sabines temperature rose. His bold stare clearly branded her as his to any random fool who might be walking by. She stared at him right back, and he looked her up and down, as if imagining her naked. Kareem was droning on about something, and she was sure Tariq wasnt listening. Come into my carav and dine with us, the physician said. It is nearly lunchtime. Yes, I would love that! Karrin clapped her hands together. Tariq opened his mouth, but Sabine would never know if hed accept or decline their offer. Another man claimed his attention, one that shouted his name over and over again. Viper. Viper! What is it? Tariq exclaimed, giving the man a critical eye. Hed obviously run to get there, if the sweat on his brow was any indication. The fabric under his arms was wet and he wiped his face with the tail of his dunla. Sabine recognized him as one of the three whod first accused her of stealing water at Tariqs oasis. She stepped behind Tariq to hide herself somewhat. Your Highness, its Darish. Hes not in the Bantiem. It looks as if hes escaped. The door to his cell was wide open! Instantly, Tariqs body went rigid. No longer was he the playful prince. He was the Viper, ready to do battle. When was this discovered? Not more than an hour, Highness. I, myself, noticed his absence when entering the Bantiem to provide food and water. But the guard, hed been murdered! A few days dead, by my estimation. As soon as I saw Darish was gone, I ran to find you. A few days? The disbelief and fury in Tariqs voice was unmistakable. Alert the guards. Tell them to search every carav, high and low, even my own. I want Darish
88

found. Now! The man bowed low. Yes, Highness. The man turned and trotted away. Sabine, I must take my leave of you. Grasping her hand, Tariq kissed the back of it and she saw the promise of the night in his eyes. You are in good hands with Kareem and Karrin. Feel free to dine with them, my flower. Until this evening. Will everything be all right? she asked, feeling a sudden trepidation. Yes, I will make sure of it. The worry on his face didnt match the confidence of his words. He inclined his head, then spun on his heel and began barking orders at a few men whod run up to him, presumably his guards. Do you think Darish really had the gall kill a man in order to escape? she asked Karrin over her shoulder. It would appear so, Kareem answered, squinting after the Viper in the bright sun. But that is not our concern. Come inside and eat. Im sure you are most overwhelmed at this new turn of events. You can say that again. She shivered and glanced back over her shoulder to where Tariq had disappeared. From what she knew of Darish, he hadnt seemed the kind of man who would murder another. But what did she really know about anyone in the Vipers entourage? At least Karrin and Kareem are trustworthy, she thought as she climbed the steps into their carav. ~*~ Sabine made her way back to Tariqs carriage on her own. The lunch shed shared with Karrin and Kareem had been delicious, and theyd talked for a long while. Karrin was eager to learn all about her whirlwind courtship with the Viper, while Kareem had given her uneasy smiles and kept fidgeting on his seat. Shed finally decided shed overstayed her welcome and left, wondering why Kareem seemed so unhinged. Perhaps he didnt approve of his princes choice. Or perhaps he was just a strange little man. She didnt know much about him. Shed spent a few days getting better in his carav, but she didnt remember much, and what she did remember was of Karrin and her smiling face.
89

The day was lovely, with the sun shining bright, and Sabine decided to walk alongside the caravan to stretch her legs. She stood in the shadow of the looming vehicles and kept an eye on the enormous beasts that pulled them. She made a mental note to ask Tariq about them. She didnt have any knowledge about them from writing her book and she couldnt remember ever seeing them unhitched from the caravs. They were strange creatures indeed. Glancing at the sky, she noticed it wasnt quite the deep blue of Earth. It held a reddish tinge to it. The sun beat down on her, and in no time, she was sweating. When she took a deep breath, the hot air filled her lungs. Perhaps it was time to retire to the Vipers cool carav after all. Just as she was about to lengthen her stride, one of the enormous animals beside her snorted and glanced at her. She arched a brow and stared at it with a mixture of fascination and fear. The whites of its eyes were huge as it gazed at her with what seemed like disdain. With a shake of its head, it made a guttural noise before pulling its partner toward her. Oh God. The beasts were breaking the caravan line, squealing and foaming at the mouth. But no one around her seemed to notice or care. Why wasnt anyone freaking the hell out? Sabine squealed and took off at a dead run, but the animals were faster, bearing down on her with uncanny speed. The methodic beat of their hooves in the sand reverberated through her very being. Terror nearly swallowed her whole. Tariq! Tariq! She was entirely too horrified to realize she was running away from the caravan. She couldnt afford to stop. The loud bellows from the creatures were right behind her. If she stopped, shed be trampled. She tried turning sharply. Surely the out-of-control animals couldnt turn on a dime, not while pulling that heavy carav behind them. But she didnt account for the shifting sand. Her sandal slipped underneath her, down she went. No, no, no! With a scream of her own, Sabine realized shed died
90

on Earth only to die now on Jikkar. She cried for the Viper, and hoped to God he could come to terms with her death. Tariq! she yelled one more time, right before the creatures crushed her into the sand.

Sabine. That was Tariqs voice. From somewhere in the black, she could hear him, seemingly floating just beyond reach. Open your eyes. His voice was firm, commanding. That was an order from the Viper. She struggled against her own body, knowing she wasnt asleep, but not quite awake. After a few tries, she was able to crack her eyelids only to see Tariqs gorgeous face mere inches from hers. The moment she gazed into his eyes, she was in his arms as he held on tight. He heaved a sigh, and she wondered if that was relief shuddering through him. Her mouth was unbelievably dry. She couldnt help but feel as if half the desert had found its way down her throat. Im thirsty, she croaked. Was that her voice? Good Lord, she sounded like an old woman. Instantly, Tariq pulled back and grasped a goblet off a nearby table, sloshing water over his hand. Easy, Highness, not too much. Kareem. What was he doing here? What happened to her? She accepted the water and closed her eyes in ecstasy with each blessed swallow. Tariq held the back of her head in his strong hand, as if he didnt want her falling into the pillows in which shed been laying. She was glad for it. Her strength seemed sapped, as if shed run a marathon. Sabine took one more gulp before pulling back. What happened? she asked, voicing her thoughts.
92

We thought you could answer that question, Kareem said. She looked from him to Tariq. II Thinking hard, she remembered walking alongside the caravan, and those beasts. Theyd broken the line. Theyd trampled her! Oh God, Tariq! she exclaimed. Moving her arms and legs, she was amazed to find they werent broken. Those creatures! They were coming after me. His eyes darkened. What creatures? Thethe beasts who pull the caravs. They broke the line and charged me. Didnt anyone tell you? She could hear the panic in her voice, but she could care less. Theyd trampled her, she remembered that much. The pain before blacking out had been excruciating. Tariq glanced at Kareem before taking her face in his hands. Sabine, none of the Sentinels have broken the caravan. Every carriage is present and accounted for. Thats not true. I know its not true. I was trampled. I remember that! They ran over me and I was screaming for you. I was screaming and they wouldnt stop. Her tears overflowed. Once again, Tariq embraced her. I felt their hooves crushing me! Listen to me, he said, his strong voice in her ear. You were found face-down in the sand, far from the caravan. When I couldnt find you, I ordered the leading carav to stop. If I hadnt, we probably would have left you behind. With a sniffle, Sabine pulled back, but continued to hold Tariq around his neck. Im telling you the truth. I ran from yourSentinels. I remember wondering what kind of creatures they were. I had a few questions I wanted to ask you about them. And before I knew it, two of them swerved from the caravan and chased me. I was terrified. Kareem broke the silence after shed spoken. There is nothing wrong with her, Viper, aside from sun exposure. Ill take my leave if you wish it. Tariq nodded, but kept his eyes on Sabine. Thank you for your services. The man bowed low then he was gone. They were alone in Tariqs quarters. You have to believe me. Im not lying to you.
93

I do not believe youre lying, my flower. What I do believe is that youre not used to my hot sun and scorching clime. It is possible exposure to Jikkars deserts has made you see things that didnt happen. Youre saying I hallucinated those beasts mowing me down? There is no other explanation, Tariq said. No one reported the Sentinels going berserk and running after you. If they had, I would have put them down myself. She swallowed hard at the malice in his tone. She had no doubt he would have killed those creatures if theyd trampled her. But it was so real, Tariq. Im not sure it was a hallucination. Just as our dreams seem real? She stared at him. All right. It could have been a hallucination. But it scared the crap out of me. I thought I was going to die. I even prayed youd be able to come to terms with my death. He closed his eyes and leaned his forehead against hers. I am not sure I could, Sabine. She gave him a small kiss. I was so scared. You are with me now. You are safe. You stopped your caravan for me? She cupped his cheek in awe. Tariq nodded. Of course I did. You are my intended. Once word spread that Darish had escaped, I could only think the worst when you couldnt be found. I thought hedtaken you. I was prepared to do battle. But you found me. I found you, he whispered. I thought you were dead. My entire body went cold with fear and misery. I even dropped to the sand and considered dying with you. I never want to feel that way again. Me neither. He smiled at her. I command you, as your prince, never to die before me. She smiled back. I shall try my best, Viper. He kissed the tip of her nose. It was Kareem who noticed you were still breathing. My relief has never been so great. I carried you all the way back to my carav and he
94

worked at waking you with his magic. Im sorry I scared you. I dont know what happened out there. You are with me now, that is all that matters. I will order you some food and I demand you rest. That wasnt a request. She nodded, telling him she got the message. Will you stay with me? Im still a little shaken. Its not every day a hallucination kicks your ass. Her attempt at levity only made her tremble all the more. I will not leave you. She sighed deeply with relief. Glancing out the slats, she saw the sun no longer shown through them. It must be nighttime already. How long had she been out of it? Perhaps she didnt want to know. She gave Tariq another hug. He held her close and buried his face in her hair. ~*~ Tariq awoke to find Sabine curled into his body, breathing deep in slumber. His arm tightened, tucking her closer to him. She sighed, but didnt awaken. Knowing she was asleep worried him. She hadnt appeared in their dream world. Hed waited for her, looking up at the moons, sitting calmly on the carpet spread upon the sand dune. But the longer hed waited, the more hed become concerned. It had taken a little while to wake himself up, but his relief at seeing her sleeping next to him had been outweighed by the fact that she hadnt come. The only other time she hadnt joined him in their dreams was when shed avoided sleeping altogether. Something wasnt right. Could it have something to do with her hallucination earlier? Tariq absently stroked her arm while he stared at the ceiling. Shed sworn up and down his Sentinels had charged her. But the beasts were exactly where they were supposed to be. If theyd indeed broken the line, like Sabine claimed, the entire caravan would have erupted into chaos. He would have known immediately. The Sentinels were magical beasts, calm, docile creatures that did as they were told and had no need for
95

food or water. Legend had it the gods themselves had gifted the princes of Jikkar with the only creatures that could endure the desert heat to pull the heavy caravs from their oases. Perhaps that was true. These were the very same animals he remembered from his youth. It was said the Sentinels never aged. But Sabine had been adamant. She obviously believed her story, and he had no doubt shed seen them break the line. She had no reason to lie to him. The question was why had she seen it? There were only two possibilities, and one of them disturbed him to the core. Either Sabine had hallucinated the ordeal due to the hot sun of his world, or someone was magically tampering with her mind. The fact that she hadnt joined him in his dreams made him highly suspect the latter. The thought that someone was altering her state of mind made his temper burn hot. It was altogether possible someone wasnt happy hed chosen his servant over the Jackals niece for his bride. But who would do such a thing? He would find out. And he would punish them harshly. Perhaps it was time to give the Viper armband back to Sabine. He had no idea if it had the power to return her to his dreams, but it had before. Maybe it could do so again. Concentrating on the band, he willed it to come to him. A small box in the corner near his throne opened and the power of his magic lifted the golden viper into the air. It flew gently across the room until it alighted into his palm. Taking the arm Sabine had thrown over his chest, he slowly slid the band over her hand and up her skin until it encircled her bicep. It hummed and glowed a moment before settling on her, as if it was pleased to be back on her arm. Tariqs fingers threaded through her hair a moment before he closed his eyes and probed her dream. She was dreaming of their dune, scanning the landscape for him. It had worked. With a sigh of his own, he willed himself to nod off once more.

96

There he was. Finally. Where had he been? Shed been standing here alone, for who knew how long, wondering when her handsome prince would ever fall asleep. But as Tariq came marching up their dune, his stride was fraught with purpose. The look on his face sent a chill down Sabines spine. Whatever had kept him wasnt good news. Where have you been? he asked. His deep voice seemed to echo her own thoughts. I have been here, waiting for you. He shook his head. I waited for you, but you did not come. She looked around the quiet desert. ButIve been here all night. I didnt see you. No, you did not. With a sigh, Tariq walked up to her and cupped her cheek. You were not in my dreams. I dont understand. Gazing into his darkened eyes, Sabine couldnt help but furrow her brow. What was he talking about? Shed been right here. She hadnt moved. Its possible the exposure to the sun has made you delirious, my flower, but you were not on this dune. The only reason youre here with me now is because I put my mothers armband back on you while you slept. By its magic youve returned to my dreams. Thenwhere was I? He shrugged. I do not know. While its possible the sun has sickened you, I dont believe it has. Your hallucination today, coupled with not appearing in my dreams, makes me believe something else is afoot.
97

She was almost too afraid to ask what he did believe. He must have seen the look on her face. I think someones tampering with your mind. With magic. Sabines mouth dropped open. Every inch of her skin crawled as she stared at him, speechless. Are you kidding me? she finally managed to squawk. He shook his head. There are many in my caravan who wish to see me wed to the Jackals niece. It is altogether possible someone is trying to scare you. Well its working! A sudden chill wracked her despite the warmth of the night, and she couldnt help her shivers. Tariqs large hands caressed her arms, making her gravitate toward him. Do not be frightened, Sabine, he whispered in her ear. I will find out who is responsible and punish them, make no mistake. His voice was soft, but an undeniable malice was there, just below the surface. She tried hard not to think on what he would do to the person responsible. Have you spoken to anyone today without me, anyone other than Karrin and Kareem? No, she whispered. Perhaps whoever is doing this does not need to be in contact with you to work their power. I know Jalil can She would never! Sabine interrupted with a gasp. How can you think it? I must examine every possibility. You are to be the next Viper Princess. I cannot take this attack lightly. And not only is it an attack on you, but its an attack on me as well, which can never be tolerated. As my intended, you have my full protection. Sabine swallowed hard and cleared her throat. Am I going to have anotherepisode? It is possible, he said gently, tucking wisps of hair behind her ears. Which is why I dont want you to leave my carav, for anything, until Ive found the culprit. If Jalil is not responsible, she might be able to help me smoke them out. Do you think this has anything to do with Darish escaping? He gave her a long, hard stare. I do not know. But if I
98

find that he is responsible, I will have no mercy. You mean youll kill him? If thats what it takes. But Tariq The desert is a harsh, unforgiving place, my flower. As the Viper, I have ruled my people with a generous and forgiving hand. But you hallucinated that the Sentinels had attacked you, that they had trampled you. The fear and pain you must have felt I cannot fathom it. It is unforgivable. So yes, Sabine, I would have him killed, for daring to frighten the woman I love. Her sharp intake of breath was swallowed by his mouth as he kissed her, stealing the breath right out of her lungs. He wasnt gentle, he consumed her as if he wanted to take her into himself. She could do nothing more than hold on tight while Tariq took command, molding her into his body and branding her with his touch. He pulled away, but only a hairsbreadth before whispering his words on her swollen lips. Do not remove the armband, Sabine, he said. I dont know the depths of my mothers enchantment upon it, but since you are here with me now, it might offer further protection. She stroked his cheek, amazed at the emotion on his face. He was terrified, frustrated, and righteously pissed off. Yet through it all, only one thing truly mattered. He loved her. She nodded. Ill never take it off. His warmth enveloped her as he tugged her close, wrapping her within the shelter of his arms.

Sabine awoke the next morning, alone in the carav. She had no idea where Tariq was, but she didnt doubt hed wanted an early start to find out whod been tampering with her mind. She hadnt remembered much of her dreams after shed embraced him on the dune. Hed admitted he loved her. The shock of his words still gripped her heart as she lay staring at the ceiling. She hadnt expected him to blurt out his feelings, but she didnt blame him. Hed found her a ways from his caravan, face-down in the sand, unconscious and suffering from sun exposure. The terror in his heart had probably overwhelmed him. Hell, it overwhelmed her as well. Especially if someone was responsible for what shed seen. Knowing she might have been the target of someones malice made her more than willing to stay behind the closed door of Tariqs private carriage. But what the heck did she do in the meantime? Glancing around, she spied a platter with various foods laid upon it, along with a goblet full of water not too far from where she lay. Her stomach growled loudly, and never had she wanted to kiss Tariq so soundly in all her life. Well, that wasnt true, she chided herself. She wanted to kiss him soundly every second of every day. With a smile on her lips, she crawled to the platter and began to eat. Hunger gnawed at her. It had been a while since shed eaten, and she couldnt eat fast enough. The subtle, tantalizing flavors of the foods barely passed her tongue before she swallowed. She assumed she was scarfing
100

a variation of scrambled eggs with what looked like naan, an Indian flatbread, on the side. A small plate of fried potatoes, perhaps, completed the meal. Not a crumb was left when she was finished, and Sabine sighed with a slight, satisfied grin on her face. That hit the spot. After shed had her fill of the water, she fingered the golden viper curling around her arm. Tariq had put it back on her while shed slept. The fact that she hadnt woken when hed done so was proof enough someone was tampering with her mind. Shed always been a light sleeper. A shiver raced down her spine. She hoped the band could protect her from whatever, or whoever, was plaguing her. But taking a closer look at it, she clearly remembered the day shed bought it, and never in a million years would she have thought it would transport her to another world. For whatever reason, its magic had chosen her. Not only had it belonged to Tariqs mother, but it belonged to her as well. At that moment, a thought flitted through her mind. She had no idea where it came from, but as she stared at the golden band, she knew this jewelry had been worn by Tariqs mother. In fact, it was the very trinket every Viper Princess wore, to honor her husband and mark her as a member of the royal house. Random scenes flashed through her head, of other similar armbands; a spider, a scarab, a falcon Did every desert prince have a golden band for his bride? She would have to ask Tariq. If what shed seen in her head was true, then wearing this viper meant so much more than donning a simple piece of jewelry. Then again, she could have been imagining things again. A few men shouted outside the carav in passing, laughing with each other as they walked by the Vipers carriage. She probably wouldnt have noticed it, but the quiet was deafening. What was she supposed to do to kill the time? If she were home, shed write. But Jikkar didnt have the luxury of computers or typewriters. That thought alone depressed her. Her career as an author had flown out the window the moment shed transported here.
101

Or had it? Across the room by Tariqs throne was a small table, with what looked like thick leaves of paper tucked inside a shelf underneath it. Ink and a feather pen sat upon the table, as if ready and waiting for her to use them. She didnt remember that table being there before, but truth be told, she hadnt been paying too much attention to Tariqs furnishings. No matter. She could write, if only longhand, with messy ink and an uncomfortable pen. Anything to pass the boredom. She had half a mind to finish her novel of the Viper Prince. And the knowledge of the armband being so meaningful to the Viper Princess was too good to pass up writing about. With a grin, she grabbed the paper and sat on Tariqs throne. Maybe shed read him some naughty bits later tonight. Mmm, definitely, she whispered to herself. It was about time Malika told her prince she loved him right back. ~*~ Tariq rubbed the back of his neck as he wandered toward his carav with the sun setting low on the horizon. Hed left Sabine early in the morning, intent on finding the one responsible for worming his way into Sabines mind. He hadnt wasted time finding Garens carav. Garen, one of his guards he trusted with his life, could tell if someone was lying or being truthful. And Tariq would need his magic. The first person hed confronted had been Jalil, the head cook. He didnt believe she was behind Sabines hallucination, but he had to be sure. Jalil had gotten over her initial shock at Tariqs pointed questions, but had been more than willing to help him find the culprit after Garen declared she told the truth. Tariq had needed to be sure Garen wasnt lying himself. Along with sending her thoughts to one and all, Jalil could also read a persons mind if she so desired. Working together, Garen and Jalils combined magic was a powerful combination. Once Tariq had been satisfied they were both loyal to him, theyd begun questioning members of the caravan, starting with the lead carav and working their way back. The day had proven long and uneventful, but theyd only covered

half the line. By tomorrow, hed know who had tampered with his intendeds thoughts. Now, however, he was exhausted, having spent all day in the hot sun, worrying about Sabine. Hed left her alone in his carav. He hoped shed found a way to amuse herself. The servants wouldnt be too far behind him to serve their supper, which suited Tariq just fine. His growling stomach was a testament to his gnawing hunger. He jogged the last few steps to his carriage and opened the heavy door inlaid with a golden viper. A soft glow greeted him as he climbed the steps inside. Glancing around in the muted light, he found Sabine hunched over his throne, scribbling furiously with a pen. What was she doing? He cleared his throat and closed the door behind him, then smiled when she jumped at the sound. Tariq! she squealed. He inclined his head. She was lovely with her eyes wide and her hair falling over her shoulder. When her face softened with a grin, his heart leapt inside him. You frightened me, Viper. Her sultry voice raised the hair on the back of his neck. She probably had no idea how much she affected him. The way shed said his title, he had no doubt she was deliberately baiting him. I apologize, he said, slowly approaching his throne. I did not mean to startle you. She turned away and put his pen back in the pot of ink before arranging the papers shed spread out before her. Her fingers were stained and he had to wonder if shed been writing all day. What are you doing? he asked, stopping in front of the colorful pillows littering the floor. Im writing, she answered coyly, gazing at him through her lashes. Did she just blush? Writing what? Judging by that look, shed probably been writing something naughty. He couldnt help but grin himself. Your book. Our book. I mean She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. The Vipers book. I wanted to finish it. Tariq glanced at the papers in her hands, genuinely
103

interested now. Have you finished it? Almost, she answered. I have the good bits. He chuckled when she wagged her eyebrows at him. But I dont quite know how it ends. It ends with you as my wife. He gave her a pointed stare. She cleared her throat and looked down at the papers shed placed in her lap. It wouldnt be a romance if there wasnt a happily ever after. Maybe you can help me write the ending. Tariq sat in the pillows. Id love to. She took a deep breath and straightened her papers before tossing her long hair over her shoulder. She was far too excited about her story to talk about what hed found, or rather hadnt found, about the members of his caravan. He decided to let her read to him rather than talk about the interloper whod caused her hallucination. He wanted to relax, and being with the woman he loved was more important now than anything else. Besides, he had no news to tell. Sabine was happy and serene at the moment and he wasnt of a mind to sour her mood. By tomorrow, hed know the identity of the culprit. For now, she deserved the peace her writing gave her. All right, this might be a little rough. Its a first draft and I dont have an editor. He smiled at her and gestured for her to continue. I am sure you do not need one. Ive been writing all day long like a woman possessed. I hope its good. Ready? He nodded. Malika paced the Vipers carav, wringing her hands before her. Despite what hed confessed to her during the night, she was still the princes lowly servant, after all. Waiting for him to return after a long day of driving the caravan was like torture, and she wasnt sure she had the right to even be here. Thinking her life would change simply because the prince claimed to love her was madness. She jumped at the sound of the door opening. Tariq stepped into the carav and glanced around. He found her easily enough, closing the door behind him. Malika, he said, his voice raising every hair on her
104

skin. I have been looking everywhere for you. I must tell you something, my prince. He stared at her for long moments before nodding. I suppose we both have something to say. Before you speak, Viper, I must tell you Tariq, he corrected softly. Malika closed her eyes, trembling from head to toe. I am not worthy of your love, Tariq. He opened his mouth to speak, but her raised hand stopped him. Please, just listen. I am nothing but a servant in your caravan. I do not know what you see in me, and perhaps I will never know. You are promised to the Jackals niece. I will never be your princess. But you deserve to know the thoughts of my heart. Im in love with you. I will love you until my dying day. If being your servant is as close as I can get to you, then I welcome it. I will never leave you, Tariq. With three strides, he stood before her and crushed her to him. I will not let you leave. And as far as the Jackals niece, that is why I wanted to find you. I have sent word to his oasis that Im breaking our engagement. You will be my princess, Malika, have no doubt. His mouth swallowed her shocked gasp. Hed barely swiped her lips with his tongue before she pulled back. Are you mad? He will bring war to your caravan! Tariq shook his head with a grin. If he does, I will fight him and I will win. You must think about this before you act. I have thought about it, many nights in your arms. I do not care about the traditions of the desert princes. I am in love with you. I will marry you. Malika melted in his arms. She didnt care about his caravan, his crown, or his influence. All she cared about was Tariq, the man shed grown to love. His lips were gentle this time, silently asking permission for her mouth to open for him. When she did, his tongue plunged deep. He held her face, caressing her cheeks with his thumbs as if she were made of glass. Her fingers locked in his hair and the world tilted the moment he lifted her off the floor. He laid her in the soft pillows then covered her body with his. Are you sure
105

Shh, Tariq whispered, placing two fingers on her mouth. He lowered his face to nuzzle her neck. I am sure. The moment his palms scorched her belly, a loud knock rocked the entire carav. Viper! Viper! Thats Jalil, he murmured, his brows knitting with worry. Speak! he exclaimed, without bothering to move. The kitchen carav, my prince, it is on fire. We need your permission to douse it with your water! Stay here, my flower, I mean it. Without another word, Tariq stood and ripped open his carav door. He disappeared into the night. A fire? Tariqs voice stopped Sabines narrative. Why did you add that to your story? For plot, she said. I already have a few sex scenes in this book, so I thought I would interrupt them with some drama. And thats not the only thing that happens, she said with a wag of her brows. While the Viper is dealing with the fire A loud knock reverberated throughout the carav. Viper! We need you. Please! The desperate voice on the other side belonged to Jalil. Tariqs look of shock must have mirrored her own. They both stood and raced to the door. He got there first and ripped it open, staring straight into Jalils frightened face. The acrid smell of smoke wafted on the light breeze. Her eyes were wild as she pointed down the line. The kitchen carav, my prince. Its on fire! Sabine gasped loudly and covered her mouth in shock. This cant be happening! We need your permission to use the water, Jalil continued. Please, Viper, we need your help! Tariq turned and stared hard at Sabine. Confusion crossed his handsome features. Did you know this would happen? She shook her head and opened her mouth, but nothing came out. Shed written that scene earlier in the day and hadnt shown a soul. How was it possible it was actually coming to life?
106

Stay here, Sabine, understand? Under no circumstances are you to leave this carav. She nodded, too overwhelmed to do much more. Tariq bounded down the steps and into the darkness, shouting orders as he ran. Bending out the doorway, Sabine saw the orange glow light the sky as flames reached for the heavens. She shivered despite the warmth of the night. How had she known about the fire? Was it a mere coincidence the kitchen carav caught fire the very day she wrote about it? What were the odds of that ever happening? Slamming the door, Sabine bolted it shut and gathered the papers that had spilled to the floor from her shaking hands. No matter how many times she gulped air, she couldnt stop her heart from racing. The fire happened just as shed written it. Good Lord, it had come true. What if the rest of what shed written came true as well? Oh, shit Sabine dropped the papers once more.

Tariq skidded to a stop and stared in shocked terror at the size of the flames licking the sky. A bright orange mixed with indigo blue, these flames didnt resemble any blaze hed ever seen. The entire kitchen carav was engulfed, and people screamed all around him, some in panic, others in agony. The smell of charred flesh came to him, nearly making him heave right there in the sand. Viper! A servant girl, Muretta, ran up to him with wild eyes. We tried to get them all outwe tried, Viper, but we couldnt! Dont think about that now, he exclaimed. Find buckets, tell everyone to help. Water, sand, magic, I dont care what it takes, we need to get this fire out! She turned and ran. You there! Tariq yelled, pointing at a man helping one of the burned servants. Find Kareem. I need him. Now! The man bowed and took off in the other direction. Over the next few hours, Tariq could think of nothing other than unhitching the nervous Sentinels and putting out the fire before it spread to the nearby caravs. Hed seen to it that buckets of sand and precious water were poured on it, but nothing worked to put out the flames. Only magic seemed to suppress it, telling him it wasnt a natural fire. Someone had set it on purpose. But that revelation hadnt come to him until half the caravans water supply had been wasted. By that point, his anger burned almost as hot as the fire itself. Hed commanded one and all to focus their magic
108

on the fire, but most of them didnt know what to do. Tariq suggested quelling the fire by commanding it to go out, in much the same way they dismissed the flames of their candles. With most of the caravan focusing their power on doing just that, it hadnt taken long for the fire to finally die down. The only thing left of the kitchen carav was ash and the skids used to pull it through the dunes. Once the alarm had died down, Tariq noticed Kareem was nowhere to be seen. A few of the wounded hadnt made it; people who might have had a chance had his physician been present. Where is Kareem? he called to anyone who would listen. The light of the moons illuminated one person helping the rest of the wounded a few yards away. It looked like Kareems wife Karrin. Leaving the smoking carav, he stalked to the figure and found hed been right. Where is your husband? Karrin jumped at the sound of his voice, but stood once she noticed his fury. II dont know, Viper, she said, her voice shaking. Someone pounded on our door and told me of the fire, but I havent seen Kareem since late this afternoon. I searched frantically for him, but I couldnt find him. I decided to do what I could in his absence. Hes missing? She nodded. He must be, Highness. There is no other explanation when the entire caravan knows of the fire! Karrin was frightened, that much was obvious. Relaxing his stance, Tariq placed a hand on her shoulder. Do what you can for this lot. I will find Kareem. Taking his hand, she kissed his fingers and bowed low before returning to her healing. Viper! He turned to see Rahim, one of his many cousins, coming his way, pulling a young boy behind him. What is it? This boy saw something, my prince. He wanted to speak to you. I told him I would take him to you directly. The boys eyes were red and puffy, as if hed been
109

crying not too long before. He looked everywhere but directly at Tariq, probably frightened out of his mind. Kneeling in the sand, Tariq ruffled the boys hair. He couldnt be older than six or seven cycles. What do you have to tell me, little man? II saw Its all right. I wont hurt you. You can speak freely. I saw someone. Maybe a man, I dont know, it was dark. Mama called me inside to eat and I saw him. He was running from the kitchen just before the fire started. Tariq glanced at Rahim in shock. Did you see who it was? What he was wearing? The boy shook his head. No, but What? After everyone ran to the fire, I saw a bunch of men go into your carav. Tariqs blood ran cold. My carav? I thought maybe they were getting you, but they never came back out. Thats when my Mama yanked me inside. Sabine. Bile rose into the back of his throat. He tried hard to tamp down the terror in his heart. How long ago? he said in an even voice. Right after everyone started yelling. By the gods. That was hours ago. See to it he returns to his mother. Turning on his heel, Tariq ran as fast as he could down the caravan line. By the time he made it to his carav, his breathing came in sharp gasps and his heart nearly burst within him. His door was wide open and no light came from within. Sabine! He couldnt keep the terror from his voice if he tried. No one answered him as he climbed the steps. With a single snap of his fingers, his lamps lit, revealing the four corners of his empty carriage. He couldnt do much more than stand there in disbelief. The papers shed written earlier littered the floor and her scent still engulfed him, but Sabine was gone. Tariqs heart cracked. Who would dare take her? From his very carav?
110

He ran his fingers so brutally through his hair, he brought tears to his eyes. Or were they tears of helplessness? For long, eternal seconds, he didnt know what to do. Sabine had been taken, he had no doubt of that. And if the boys account was right, shed been taken right after the fire had broken out. Something nagged at his memory. Something shed said about her story, right before the fire had come true. He fell to his knees and searched the papers, desperately looking for where shed left off. There, by his right hand. That was the scene. Sabine had somehow predicted the fire. Had she predicted what came next? Tariq read on, and the hair on the back of his neck stood on end. A raiding party had come, distracting the caravan with the fire, only to steal Malika out from under the Vipers nose. Tariq turned the page desperately, reading as fast as he could. I should have known, he growled fiercely under his breath. The Jackal Prince. His men had stolen her to his oasis. Glancing up from the pages, his eyes lit on something glittering from atop his throne. There, amongst the pillows, sat a small, golden figurine. It was a jackal, silently taunting him from across the carriage. Sabine had been right all along. The Jackal had brought war to the Vipers caravan. And Tariq wouldnt rest until that bastards body was carrion strewn across the Golden Desert.

111

Tariq couldnt afford to waste any more time. He grabbed hold of the jackal figurine and sprinted out of his carav. The leader of his guards was still barking orders to the servants to bury the smoking remains of the kitchen. Tariq made his way toward him. Garen! he called out. The man spun on his heels. Viper. He furrowed his brow. The fire is no longer a threat, Your Highness. I have men working hard to find the culprit. No need. I know who did this. Tariq came to a stop before the man and opened his fist, showing him the figurine. The Jackal has taken Sabine. You cannot be serious! Tariq gave Garen a pointed stare. Assemble the guards. I want your best men, those youd call warriors. Two-thirds of them will ride with me. The rest will stay with the caravan and lead them back to my oasis. Garen gaped at him. What do you have a mind to do? The Jackal wants war. I intend to humor him. He will not take my intended and get away with it. He turned and watched the servants burying the ruined carav. We wasted too much precious water in putting out that fire. The others will have to get another fresh supply for Suridesh. Tariq sighed deeply as the first twinge of dawn lit the sky. The Jackals men had a good head start. The more he thought of Sabine at their mercy, the more his heart burned in his chest.
112

He needed as many men as he could spare, but gathering water at his oasis was no easy feat. Most of them would need to stay behind, not only for the water, but for protection as well. If he left the caravan to pursue the Jackals raiding party, theyd be vulnerable to another attack. He needed help. We cannot attack the Jackals caravan alone, my prince, Garen said, mirroring his own thoughts. It would be suicide. I know, Tariq bit out. But Im confident the Jackal doesnt wish to kill me. He wants to force my hand to marry his niece. I will not be forced. Then what is your plan? Tariq looked at his guard and gave him a wicked smile. We need the Scarab. Buthe is in the tent city, Your Highness. With a nod, Tariq gestured for his guard to follow as he made his way down the caravan line. That is why I need Jalil. ~*~ You want me to do what? Tariq gazed into Jalils frightened face and took her hand. It will be all right. You will not be punished for doing this, not if the Scarab knows it is I who is contacting him. I shouldnt know his name, my prince. Her voice trembled with the rest of her. It isnt proper, it isnt right! I know, but you must do this, for your future princess. For me. II The only way the Scarab will know it is not a prank is if I tell you his name. Only close friends, family, and other desert princes know it. This needs to be done. Jalil swallowed hard, but nodded once and squared her shoulders. He is in Suridesh? Yes. Closing her eyes, she concentrated for long minutes. I have found him. He is sleeping. Wake him. She opened her eyes. Tariq gave her a harsh look. Do it, Jalil. I must be off. She bit her lip, but did as she was told. He is awake.
113

What is it you wish to say to him? Scarab, it is me, Tariq Sayed. I have contacted you through one of my servants who can send her thoughts. He paused to let her relay the message. He is confused, Highness. Tariq continued. To prove it to you, your name is Qadir Hadmas, and we have been friends ever since our fathers council in Suridesh when we wandered off and got ourselves lost in the tent city. He asks why youre contacting him so early inin the damn morning. I need your help. I have met a woman and I intend to marry her. The Jackal has taken her in an effort to force my hand to marry Trianna, but I will not be swayed, regardless of my fathers promise. I fear for my intendeds safety. She is not from this world. Remember my mothers armband? It has returned and brought her with it. I cannot reclaim her from the Jackal on my own. Youre in luck, Jalil said, lifting one side of her mouth in a cocky grin, just as Qadir always did. My caravan is resting until I set out again. Ill leave them in Suridesh under the governors supervision and gather as many men as I can find. The Jackal always was a son of a bitch. When he takes on one of us, he takes on all of us. Thank you, my friend, Tariq said. There is no time to spare. Take your men and head out to his oasis. You have my word. Once their conversation finished, Jalil opened her eyes. He is racing to get ready, my prince. Tariq sighed in relief. Probably overjoyed I will not be marrying Trianna. She gave him a look of confusion. My prince? Do not fret about it, Jalil. He grabbed her in a rough hug and kissed her wrinkled forehead. Thank you. For everything. When we return with Sabine, I promise to build you an even grander kitchen carav. Youll need it. I intend to have a big family. Are you ready to ride with me? She gave him a blank look. I need you with me, to contact Sabine and make sure shes all right. I need to know the Jackals thoughts to gain the upper hand.
114

I have not even prepared! She glanced around frantically, as if trying to think of everything shed need. I have taken care of everything, Jalil. It is decided. Come with me. You will be well protected. With that, he turned and led her to the waiting horses the servants had readied for them, along with those of his men who would be riding by his side. We have all we need? he asked Gabril, taking the reins from the head servant. Yes, Viper. Food and water for all are packed on the camels as well as your tents. The bags on your mount hold your dunlas and robes. And my sword? It is here, my prince. Gabril pulled it partway out of its scabbard, tucked neatly into the fabric of Tariqs saddle. Tariqs majestic white horse sidestepped excitedly, making the tassels on his bridle bounce and jingle. He is as impatient as I am. Good work, Gabril. Look after my caravan while Im gone. Gabril bowed low as Tariq took a dunla from his bag. He wrapped it on his head to protect him from the harsh sun then mounted his horse. He nodded at Jalil to do the same, and gestured for his men to follow. In no time at all, the Viper and his warriors lit out across the desert, intent on bringing war to the Jackals oasis.

Any other time, Tariq would brand himself a fool for leaving his caravan. Riding into the dunes was a death sentence. Without the caravans valuable water supply, not to mention the shade it offered, the desert was a cruel, unforgiving place. He didnt have as many men as he would have liked, but the amount of supplies they had to bring made them resemble an army rather than a small group of his elite guards. Not only was he worried about Sabine, Tariq was worried about his men and their horses as well. If any one of them died due to exposure, he was to blame. No, he thought. The Jackal was to blame for this. If it hadnt been for that bastard, Tariqs caravan would still be traveling on to Suridesh. But even the Jackal and his thugs wouldnt dare harm Sabine, at least not much. Theyd need her as a bargaining tool, to force him to marry Trianna. The question was why did the Jackal go to such lengths to make sure the marriage would happen? The disappearance of Kareem, coupled with Darish mysteriously escaping the Bantiem a few days before that, couldnt have been mere coincidence. It pained him to realize, but Kareem had to be working for the Jackal. It was the only scenario that made any damn sense. Someone had to release Darish from his cell. It had been magically locked, and the former head servant had no knowledge of how to open it himself. Who else would have been able to send word back to the Jackal of where they
116

were in the desert? Kareem had never seemed happy to treat Sabine when shed been injured. Over time, his demeanor around her had changed, about the time Tariq informed his caravan she was his intended. And right before Sabine had hallucinated the Sentinels trampling her to death, shed lunched in the physicians carav. Fury scorched him. Kareem was the traitor, the one whod invaded Sabines mind. Hed never been questioned when Tariq had interrogated the caravan, and even Kareems wife Karrin seemed to be in the dark about his treachery. If Tariq ever saw that man again, Kareem wouldnt live to see another day. Tariq couldnt afford to run the horses, no matter how much he wished it. His only consolation was that the men they pursued couldnt either, not unless they didnt care if they killed their mounts. But horses were expensive, even for a caravan prince. He doubted the Jackal would be so careless. I cannot reach her. Jalils voice pulled him out of his pensive thoughts. Shed ridden up to him on her timid mare, but remained a step behind his horse out of respect. I cannot reach Sabine. Something or someone is blocking her. Keep trying, he replied, barely keeping his composure. I believe it was Kareem who betrayed us. Perhaps he will make a mistake. Jalil gasped but did not say a word. Tariq didnt spare her a glance. At this point, it would take them a few days to reach the Jackals oasis. He hoped hed arrive alongside the Scarab. Regardless of whether or not his old friend would meet him, he wouldnt be able to stop himself from confronting the Jackal on his own. There was no way Tariq would allow the future Viper Princess to be treated like a common slave. If one hair on Sabines head had been harmed, thered be almighty hell to pay. ~*~ Tariq had no idea how hed survived the day. Jalil had to force food on him once theyd stopped for the night, as he
117

hadnt eaten at all. He couldnt remember the last time hed had a meal. His dinner from the night before had been somewhere in that burned-out carav. The men had erected his tent once theyd stopped, which was nothing bigger than what his servants slept in. Taking the larger, more ornate tent he used in Suridesh wasnt prudent out here in the middle of nowhere. His royal tent was much bigger than his carav, perhaps twice as big. But there was no call for such decadence, not on this mission. Once Tariqs belly was full, his eyes drooped until he crawled into his tent for the night. He had no idea what Jalil fed him, but it filled the hole within him and made him sleepy. He missed Sabine. So much so, that his heart ached with it. He had no doubt she wouldnt be in his dreams, not tonight. If Kareem was keeping her thoughts from Jalil, then hed most likely taken off the Viper armband which seemed to protect her. Tariq wondered about the plot shed written and how shed known exactly what was going to happen. He firmly believed everyone had some form of magic within them. Perhaps in coming to Jikkar, Sabine had finally tapped into that magic. Or perhaps the armband had showed her what was truly going on. Shed been writing a novel about him on her own world. Even then, shed known about Trianna, known about his engagement, known about even the other desert princes. It wasnt too much to believe the armband itself was revealing her future to her in order to protect her from it. But now that Sabine had been taken by Kareem, how exactly would the armband protect her? Even he didnt know the extent of his mothers enchantment. Whatever the Jackals nefarious plans, hed messed with the wrong prince. Tariq had spent too much of his life being manipulated and beaten by his own father. When the time came, Tariq had challenged his father for the Viper crownand he had won. It had been easy gaining the loyalty of the caravan afterward. There had been no love lost for the previous Viper Prince.
118

If Tariq had his way, hed do it again with the Jackal. The Jackal heir wasnt quite the age most princes were when they came to rule, but at this point, anything was better than the boys bloodthirsty father. Tariq liked the kid. So did the Scarab. If they were careful, they might just rescue Sabine and depose the sitting Jackal Prince. That thought gave him some much-needed peace as he drifted off to sleep with cold, empty arms.

Sabines mouth was full of sand. So were her eyes and her nose. Eww, and her ears. It was entirely too bright to fully open her lids and take a look around, but the ache in her arms and legs told her she was tied to something. As her senses returned to her in a rush, she could hear the cool lap of water on a shore. A light, refreshing breeze hit her face, contradicting the oppressively hot sun bearing down upon her. The bite of coarse rope cut through the skin of her wrists and ankles, making her acutely aware that they were tied behind her to some kind of post. Her knees dug into the sand while her head lolled forward on her chest. Every movement was agony. Every breath, every small twitch of her muscles. How long had she been tied up like this? How long had she endured the desert elements? She couldnt remember anything beyond Tariqs carav. Right after dropping her manuscript, someone had blasted open the door, despite the bolt shed pulled seconds before. A hood had gone over her head, but no one from Tariqs caravan heard her screaming over the shouts from those fighting the fire. It wasnt long after that shed lost consciousness. Trying to wade through her murky thoughts, she knew where she was. She was at the Jackals oasis. Everything was playing out just as shed written. Unfortunately, she hadnt written much more than having her heroine tied up to a post, facing the waters of his oasis. The Jackal Prince wasnt a man to have mercy, and exposing her to the harsh desert while making her gaze out
120

at his water, just a few feet away, was a testament to that. Looking down at her arm, she saw that the Viper armband was missing, just as she knew it would be. Trianna had taken it. The woman was insanely jealous of her relationship with Tariq and meant to keep the armband for herself. This entire fiasco was to force the Viper to marry her. But Sabine hadnt written much farther than that. In fact, if her manuscript was still coming true, then she wouldnt have long to wait before Trianna confronted her. Youre awake. Nope, not long at all. The womans soft voice didnt fool Sabine. She knew Trianna was capable of cruelty as well. Shed had a good teacher in her uncle. Cracking open her eyes, Sabine glanced up into the face of a beautiful woman. Her skin was bronzed, complimenting the shimmering golden robes she wore. Her black hair was pulled back from her exotic face and curled to her waist. It was streaked with golden highlights as well. A small gold band circled her head, with long, sparkling tassels that fell throughout her hair. And Sabine didnt miss the Viper armband, proudly displayed on Triannas right bicep. She made a show of making sure she noticed it as well, by tossing her hair over her shoulder. Trianna, Sabine said, marveling at her own gravely voice. You have something that belongs to me. The womans eyes grew large, probably because Sabine knew her name without being told. But she soon got over her shock and narrowed her eyes instead. No, Sabine, she said, spitting her name like a curse. The Viper band belongs to me and has for many years. You are the thief who has stolen my intended. Sabine shook her head. I am the Vipers intended. Without warning, Trianna backhanded her. Stars exploded behind her eyes. You will never be the Viper Princess, you bitch! I have been promised to the Viper for as long as I can remember. He will marry me. Sabine closed her eyes until the world stopped

spinning. Her stomach chose that moment to growl loudly. How long had it been since shed eaten? She couldnt even remember her last meal. She tried hard to ignore the lapping water. The Viper has chosen me over you, she managed to grit out. He was about to send word to the Jackal. Triannas bark of laughter echoed throughout the glade. My uncle will make him see reason. He doesnt want you, Trianna. Sabine knew her words would incite the woman, but she was beyond caring. If she was to be the future Viper Princess, it was about time she start acting like it. You and yours will be sorely punished for taking the woman the Viper intends to bear his heirs. Trianna shrieked. He will not want you when I am through! Bear his heirs? We shall see about that. She stooped in the sand and held her manicured hand low over Sabines belly. Sudden cramps shot through Sabine, much more powerful than any of her menstrual cramps had ever been. Her breath released in a rush, as if shed been punched, before a weight seemed to bear down on her stomach. With a wicked grin, Trianna stood once more, wiping her hands together as if shed just touched something that had soiled her. Whatdid youdo? Sabine whispered, barely able to breathe. Triannas mouth pulled back, exposing her teeth in a sneer. You will never bear the Vipers heirs. He cannot marry you, no matter how much he may wish it. A sound escaped Sabine, like a howl. Tears sprang into her eyes and overflowed down her cheeks before she could stop them. Trianna did nothing more than walk away, not bothering to look back while Sabines entire world spun out of control. Triannas magic had made her barren. Shed never have a child of her own. More cramping made her double over and she cried out at the pain of the rope tugging her wrists. She hadnt written this, she hadnt even foreseen it. Dear God, she prayed Tariq could save her. She prayed Triannas

enchantment could be reversed. Otherwise, all of her hopes and dreams for building a life on Jikkar would come crashing down. ~*~ Kareem bowed low before the Jackal in his ornate carav. The man was much older than the Viper, perhaps by another thirty cycles. But despite his leathery face, his eyes were as sharp as fangs, and his mind was as clear as the waters of his oasis. You have done well, the Jackal said, fondling the two naked servants kneeling by his throne. They each cooed as if they enjoyed his touch, but Kareem knew better. They feared to show him their true feelings, else theyd end up like poor Breena, whod been left behind in the shifting sands after refusing the Jackal his lusts. Thank you, my prince. The Viper is no doubt traveling to your oasis as we speak. He should be here within two days. And his intended is tied to the post? The venom in the Jackals voice was barely concealed. Yes. She cannot escape her bonds as they are magically bound. See to it you keep her alive. I cannot bargain with the Viper if she is dead. You have my word, Kareem said, glancing at one of the girls as she gasped. Apparently, the Jackal had seen fit to pinch her nipple. Your talents will suit me well, Kareem, the Jackal said, continuing his ardent caresses. How often will I need your touch? Once a week, sire. That will be enough to sustain your good health indefinitely. I cannot make you younger, but I can stop you from aging. And all you ask for this generous offer is to merely be my physician? Kareem lifted his mouth in a smile. I wish to be the most powerful mage in the Golden Desert, Jackal. It is my desire to give life, or take it, as I see fit. The Jackal guffawed loudly, then bent forward and nearly swallowed his servants breast whole. He groaned when he bit her, seemingly aroused by her cry of pain.
123

Kareem tried hard to hide his own arousal. His prince noticed. What if I told you I wished for more from you? the Jackal asked, his eyes burning. Ask what you will, my prince. For the honor of serving you, I will do anything. Anything? The Jackal cocked his brow. Kareem swallowed hard at the look the prince gave him. It was well known the Jackal had deviant sexual tastes. But Kareem had come too far, sacrificed too much, to be swayed now. Yes, Your Highness. What if I asked you to become my lover? If you wish it, Kareem said, without hesitation. The Jackal obviously liked his answer. Prove to me youd do anything, the prince replied, opening his robes. Come here, Kareem. He approached the Jackal until he stood in front of his throne, seeing for himself the long, rigid length of his princes cock. The Jackal pointed to the floor and Kareem knelt between his legs, directly in front of him. Theres a good boy, the Jackal purred, stroking Kareems hair. Once a week. Looking into his princes piercing eyes, Kareem had no doubt what the Jackal demanded of him. The princes plan was to live as long as Kareems magic would sustain him, while slating his lusts at the same time. Knowing what he had to do should have made him turn away in disgust. But instead, his mouth watered. Kareem answered with a nod just as the Jackal pushed down his head.

Nineteen
It was night. It had to be. The air was cooler and the bright sun was gone, but still, Sabine knelt in the sand, tied to the post. The passage of time was lost on her. She could have been kneeling here for mere hours or long months, either option sounded plausible. Her abdomen still hurt, but thankfully the intense, sharp pain from Triannas magic had finally left her. She felt like a rung-out rag. There was no more moisture within her to form any tears. Her face was puffy and she had to look like shit, but she was beyond caring. Where was Tariq? Would he come? Would he save her? Opening her eyes, she gazed out upon the incredible foliage surrounding the Jackals oasis. Flowers in every size and color imaginable bloomed along the waters edge, along with many kinds of desert life, each animal coming from far and wide to drink its fill. The tranquility of the evening seemed to mock her. The Jackals caravan encircled the oasis on the opposite side of the water from her. Lights flickered here and there in the carriages while the smell of food wafted to her on the breeze. Her stomach twisted violently. She was alone on her side of the oasis, left to rot like a common criminal. The caravs shielded her from seeing the far dunes. If Tariq was coming, she wouldnt know it. The stars twinkled peacefully in the sky above, while the two moons, Thiadra and Pamos, offered their soft light to the surrounding landscape. They were almost touching. Gazing at them sent a knife of despair straight through her
125

heart. Memories of her dreams with Tariq plagued her. She knew she wouldnt dream of him now. To her shock, more tears managed to well up in her eyes. Sabine? A young male voice called out to her from the plants near the waters edge. She turned her head in that direction. Hello? she called. She coughed the sand from her lungs, wincing at the fire in her arms and legs. Shh, the voice said. Do not tax yourself. I am a friend. He sounded more like a boy. Who are you? Sabine resisted the urge to wet her cracked lips. He didnt answer right away, but a rustling sound caught her attention to the left. A figure emerged from the shadows, holding something to his chest. As he inched closer, the item he held looked to Sabine like a water pouch. My name isSiraj Pramtash, he said, hesitating for just a moment. My father has brought you here unjustly. I mean to make it right. Confusion pulsed through her brain before his words made any sense. Your father? The boy nodded. The Jackal Prince. Without another word, he used his teeth to pull the stopper from the pouch he carried. A few drops of water splashed from it, making Sabine realize just how dry her mouth was. You shouldnt have told me your name, Your Highness, Sabine said with a groan. You are the Jackals heir. He nodded. And you are the Vipers intended, are you not? She glanced up into his smiling face. The boy was handsome, with bright eyes and white teeth, and he was perhaps no older than fifteen. I am, she croaked. Then you are to be the wife of a very powerful desert prince, my lady. You deserve to know my name. He offered her the pouch and she drank greedily. Not too much, he said, pulling it from her lips. Water

doused the front of her filthy robes. You will make yourself sick. Sabine looked over his shoulder. Your father knows youre here? The boy turned to glance back at the caravan and shook his head. No. My loyalty does not lie with my father. His words shocked her speechless. She knew from writing the Vipers book that loyalty to the prince was expected, especially the loyalty of his heirs. Otherwise punishment was swift. Or, if one was truly unlucky, it was long and drawn out. Just as she was about to prod him further, the boy spoke once more. The Jackal is a mean, cruel prince. Hes ruled this caravan for many cycles, and squanders his water on those who will humor his lusts. Every young girl is brought before him for inspection, where he deems them worthy to marry. But his inspections have ruined them. Yet their intendeds do nothing, for insubordination against their prince is not to be tolerated. I have countless brothers and sisters, Sabine. Yet I am the only legitimate one in line to take his throne. After my mother bore me, my father quietly got rid of her. He must have seen the look of disbelief on her face as he nodded and continued, Deflowering the maidens of the caravan is not the worst he has done. My father delights in torture, and probably even now is laughing in his carriage at your pain. Why are you here, Siraj? she asked after he gave her another sip of water. Why have you risked your fathers wrath to talk to me? There are many in this caravan who would see me on my fathers throne. Many who have whispered about overthrowing the Jackal, but they would never dare risk their lives unless they knew it was possible. Until now there hasnt been an opportunity to unseat him, as my father knows the perversions of his loyal followers and seeks to control their perversions, to keep their loyalty. But in his push for power, hes toyed with the Viper, and many in this caravan know hes crossed the line. They believe that in taking you and forcing the Viper to marry my cousin, it is the time to move. With another caravan prince

out for blood, this is the perfect time to rise up against the Jackal once and for all. She couldnt ignore the hope in his young voice. He seemed so much older than his years, perhaps due to all hed had to endure being the son of his bloodthirsty father. She was amazed the boy hadnt turned out just as horrid. I need the Viper armband, she said, swallowing hard. Can you and your men get it for me? Trianna has it. I know. But it allows me to talk with Tawith the Viper. She didnt know if Siraj knew Tariqs true name. She wasnt about to be the one to tell him and get herself into even more trouble. Of course, she doubted Tariq would punish her. At least not unpleasantly. I will see what I can do. But know Im on your side. Most of this caravan is. However I cannot save you from being tied to the post, at least not yet. If overthrowing my father is to work, he must believe he still has the upper hand. Disappointment rippled through her, but she understood Sirajs reasoning. Ill play along, she said. Just try to get my armband. He nodded and bowed deeply. I shall do my best. ~*~ Darish sat in the bushes and listened to Sabines exchange with the Jackals heir. Hed been given the task of watching Sabine through the night. Hed complained, but soon learned the Jackals will was to be obeyed. He even had the bruises to prove it. Kareem had once promised he wouldnt be a slave in the Jackals caravan, but after the way hed been treated, Darish had his doubts. Hed settled in by the waters edge, preparing himself for a long evening on watch when the princes own son had emerged from the foliage. He watched the exchange with shocked interest. Darish couldnt quite hear what was being said, but he knew without a doubt the young prince had just given Sabine water, a clear violation of his fathers strict orders. Darish sat up straighter, wide awake and holding his
128

breath. The last thing he wanted was to rustle the nearby leaves and alert them to his presence. If overthrowing my father is to work, he must believe he still has the upper hand. Whats this? The young prince had designs of stealing the Jackals throne? Both fear and excitement shuddered through Darish in that moment. If he told the Jackal, it was very likely his son would be harshly punished, if not killed for such disloyalty. Yet if he kept it to himself, he might just be able to escape once the Viper made his appearance. It was obvious the Jackal clearly expected the Viper to confront him for taking his intended. Darish knew without a doubt that escaping from the Vipers Bantiem was a death sentence. The Jackal would offer him protection from the Viper as a member of his caravan, but hed never be more than a slave, expected to jump at his new princes every whim. But escaping alone across the desert was a death sentence as well. Darish watched as the young prince slinked away in the night, leaving Sabine tied where he found her. She hung her head and sat motionless. Perhaps shed once again lost consciousness. Darish stood, still undecided in what he should do. Perhaps the Jackal would find favor with him for uncovering his sons plans to unseat him. That was the only option open to him. Damn, he was a slave after all. Before he confronted the Jackal with this turn of events, he decided to follow young Siraj. If he was planning on dethroning his father, Siraj most certainly had friends to help him. And Darish was going to find out who these traitors were. Maybe, just maybe, the Jackal would see fit to reward him. Leaving his spot in the grass, he padded as quietly as he could a good distance behind Siraj. The boy was nothing more than a shadow in the night, making his way to a far, darkened carav. The young prince looked both ways before entering, and silently closed the door behind him. But that was not the young princes carriage.
129

Darish slid between the metal runners of the carav and lay in the sand underneath it, so he couldnt be seen. Using his magic, he closed his eyes and tried to enhance the muffled voices he heard from within. After a few minutes of listening closely, he opened his eyes in disbelief. The Jackal would not be pleased.

Tariq opened his eyes and gazed up at the stars. He was dreaming, he knew it. The carpet hed once shared with Sabine was spread out underneath him, yet she wasnt there. Hed known she wouldnt be, but that hadnt stopped the sliver of hope that had nagged him while hed fallen asleep. The night air was cool, kissing the bare skin of his chest. He wasnt naked, but his robes were tied around his waist. Viper. A womans sultry voice called to him. He sat up so quickly, his head spun. That hadnt been Sabines voice, but he prayed it was, if only to see for himself that she was all right. But what he saw made his blood run cold. There stood Trianna, the Jackals niece, gazing down at him seductively in a shimmering golden gown. He could clearly see the curves of her body through the fabric, and his mothers Viper armbandno, Sabines armbandwas firmly on her bicep. She stood just beyond the carpet, then stepped onto it and approached him. Tariq leapt to his feet. What are you doing here, and why are you wearing Sabines armband? Her eyebrows shot up for just a moment before she schooled her features. She glanced at the band and smiled. It is mine, Viper. You have been promised to me for years, yet you never claimed me. It is about time you do so, yes? I will never claim you, Trianna. Our engagement is
131

broken. Sabine is my intended and, so help me, if you or your uncle have harmed her, there will be suffering in the Jackals caravan unlike anything youve ever known. Her eyes widened. Tariq had never taken such a harsh tone with a woman before, but the fact that Trianna stood before him, wearing the band of the Viper Princess, filled him with fury. Despite his wrath, Trianna stepped closer. You cannot marry Sabine, Viper, she cooed, lifting her hand to touch him. He grabbed it before she could and squeezed her fingers hard, making her cry out. Watch me. She wrenched her hand free and scowled darkly. She will never bear your children. She can never give you an heir. Cold fear trickled down Tariqs spine. What have you done, Trianna? She must have seen the malice in his eyes. She began to back away, suddenly unsure of herself. II saw to it. What have you done? His booming voice echoed off the dunes. She flinched and looked panicked. I made her barren. She can never give you children, Viper. You cannot marry heryou must marry me! Never in his life could Tariq remember being so violently furious. Not even when his own father had been mistreating his mother. He wanted nothing more than to snap Triannas throat like a twig. You have laid your hands on the future Viper Princess, Trianna. By the laws of Jikkar, I have every right to demand retribution from your uncle. But since it is your uncle who is forcing my hand, I have no choice but to depose him. She gasped, covering her mouth. You wouldnt dare! Tariq closed the gap between them and grabbed a handful of her gown, bringing her within inches of his face. Wouldnt I? You have pushed me too far, woman. It is time the Golden Desert had a new Jackal Prince, and the Scarab and I will see too it. Even in the moonlight, Tariq could see the color drain from her face. The Scarab? she croaked.
132

He gave her a single, malicious nod. Butbut heshes Careful what you say about a caravan prince, Trianna. At the moment, I am not inclined to have mercy. Her eyes filled with tears. Let me go. He dropped her at his feet on the carpet. Where is Sabine? he demanded. She is tied to a post on the far side of my uncles oasis. Tariq closed his eyes and tried hard not to give in to his temper. Is she all right? She is alive. He stooped next to Trianna without warning, making her squeal. He grabbed her arm with a rough twist and removed the band. Take this off and never put it on again. If I see you wearing my viper when I confront the Jackal, I will remove it from you myself. With or without your arm. Triannas tears overflowed and she disappeared before him, probably awake now in the real world. Tariq ran his fingers through his hair and glanced at the moons, still holding the armband in his dream. Trianna had made Sabine barren in her jealousy and vindictiveness. By the gods. He couldnt believe it. Stay strong, Sabine, my flower, he whispered. I am coming. ~*~ Trianna awoke with a squeal. Without hesitation, she ripped the Viper armband off and tossed it across her carav. It hit the far wall with a thud. Taking deep breaths, she tried hard to calm her racing heart. The Viper had been livid. She had no doubt hed meant what he said. Hed take his band back any way he could. He would never be hers. It wasnt until that moment that Trianna realized the Viper was serious. He meant to marry Sabine regardless of her circumstance. Trianna had merely wanted to show him she was his intended, not the woman from another world. The Jackal had made plans with the Vipers father for them to marry many years ago. But it was obvious now that the
133

Viper had no intention of honoring that agreement. Trianna tossed her thin blanket off her legs and stood. She wrapped a robe around her shoulders and rubbed her arms to cease her shivering. Despair filled her heart. This was the second prince who didnt want her. The Jackal had first offered her to the Scarabs father, for his son to marry once he came of age. Despite her close childhood friendship with the Scarabs heir, his father had refused, claiming his son didnt like her. It had crushed her heart, for she had secretly loved him. The other desert princes hadnt been an option for her. The Spider was already married, the Falcon was horribly scarred, and the Cobra was an old man who already had an heir. Shed begged her uncle to offer her to the Vipers heir, and he had approved of the match. But his son apparently had better ideas. Even making Sabine barren hadnt swayed the Viper. It had only proven to incite him even more, proof that he loved Sabine, and had no feelings for her. Perhaps shed been too desperate to marry the man. Hed been her only way out of her uncles caravan, and now, it would seem that door was firmly shut. The only way to escape now was to swallow her pride and ask her uncle to give her to the Falcon or the Cobra. But could she live with an ugly, scarred man? Could she stand the caresses of an old one? Trianna sobbed once and covered her mouth with her hand. There was no hope for her. In a short while, shed confront the Viper, who was determined to depose her uncle. However, she had no doubt once her cousin Siraj sat on the Jackal throne, he would punish her greatly for laying her hand on Sabine. Knowing the Scarab was on his way only served to make her terror that much greater. She hadnt seen him for many years. Did he still look the same? Would he still give her that handsome, lopsided grin shed once loved so much? No, she realized. He wouldnt. He was the Vipers best friend. He would hate her now as well, for all she had done. There was only one option left. Perhaps she could redeem herself. It was the only way to find favor with the caravan princes who were about to descend upon her uncles
134

oasis. She had to reverse the spell shed inflicted upon Sabine. What have I done? she whispered.

Darish stood before the Jackal Prince and trembled. It was barely morning, with the sky just beginning to lighten. It was obvious hed woken the prince from a sound sleep, and the man wasnt too happy about it. In fact, he looked as if he was ready to chop off someones headlike Darishs. The Jackal adjusted his robes and glared. Out with it! Darish jumped, but spat out all he had learned about the Jackals heir. It was indeed true Siraj was going behind his fathers back to unseat him. A few distant cousins and childhood friends were in on the plot as well, and Darish was only too happy to name them. They believe that when the Viper arrives, the time will be ripe for a coup, Your Highness. They will attempt to kill you. The princes eyes narrowed. You expect me to believe my own son and heir is plotting against me? Y-yes, sire. I heard them whispering myself. He brought water to Sabine! The Jackal stood from his throne, but did not speak. Darish continued. I was keeping watch and saw your son approach Sabine. He gave her water and whispered he had a plan for unseating you. I followed him to a darkened carav and listened to their plot. Once the Viper appears, they plan on joining his men to fight you. After a long silence, the Jackal spoke. If my son wishes to die, so be it. Through Kareems power, I no longer have need for an heir.
136

Darishs eyes widened. My prince? Leave me, the Jackal said, waving his hand. Will I He trailed off once the princes steely eyes captured his gaze. Will you what? Will I be rewarded for this information? The Jackal looked him up and down and wet his lips. Greatly, he said. Darish backed away while his prince advanced, but he didnt dare flee. Within a few strides, the Jackal caught him by the throat and slammed him against the far wall of his carriage. Your reward, the Jackal growled as he flipped Darish so his belly pressed against the wall, will be great indeed. Darish panicked as the prince hiked up his robes, and screamed the moment he felt a burning pain entering him from behind. He couldnt breathe as the Jackals magic squeezed his throat shut. Tears sprang into his eyes. With a few thrusting grunts, the Jackal whispered, You will die a hero, Darish. My son will kill you, my faithful servant, whom I found such great pleasure in. The people will demand his punishment. Darkness enfolded Darish and his heart exploded in his chest while his prince rutted behind him. He should have run. ~*~ The Jackal tensed and shuddered, growling his pleasure moments before he let Darish slide down the wall to the floor. The mans lifeless body would never take another breath, but no matter. There were plenty of slaves to take his place. News of his sons betrayal hadnt shocked him. Hed suspected his son had turned a while ago, but had never confronted him about it. Hed been amused to think Siraj believed he could unseat him. The boy would never have the Jackal throne. If Kareems magic was to be believed, the Jackal wouldnt grow old. Not for a long time to come. And having Trianna as the Viper Princess would prove advantageous once he had her husband killed. The Vipers oasis would soon come under his control. He would be the richest, most
137

powerful prince ever to traverse the Golden Desert. Opening the door to his carav, he kicked Darishs dead body into the first rays of the sun. One of the guards outside the door gasped at the sight then stood at full attention. My son has killed this man. He must be punished! Where is he? The guards eyes bulged, but the man didnt question his prince. I do not know, Your Highness, but I can find him and summon him to you. The Jackal held up his hand. No. I suspect my son has turned against me. I dont need to give him reason to suspect I know it. I will find him myself. In the meantime, bury this man. Yes, my prince, the guard said, racing to drag Darishs body away. Without looking back, the Jackal made his way down the caravan line.

Like a shining green jewel among the desert sands, there sat the Jackals oasis, surrounded on one side by his caravan. If Triannas words had been true, Sabine was tied to a post on the other side of the water. But she was hidden from view. Tariq sat astride his horse, uncaring if they spotted him. He was furious enough to ride down there and attack without preamble, without asking for an audience with the elder prince. Just knowing what that man had put Sabine through was enough to make Tariqs blood boil. And wondering why the Jackal was so determined for him to marry his niece had been consuming him ever since they left his own caravan behind. There was only one reason that made any sense. Only one goal that was worth the trouble of forcing the Vipers hand. The Jackal wanted his oasis. And the only way to obtain it would be to marry into the family, then kill the sitting prince. Him. Tariq was not going to give up his oasis so easily. And it was about time that bastard knew it. Viper! Looking over his shoulder, Tariq spied his guard Garen riding toward him, with an unfamiliar man riding behind him. Sire, I found one of the Jackals scouts. He claims his loyalty is with the Jackals heir and wished to speak to you immediately. Tariq gestured for the man to speak. Viper, it is an honor. My name is Hamad and I sit with
139

my men beyond that dune. The man turned and pointed. The Jackals heir is with us. We have been waiting for you to arrive. By your will and authority we ask of you to help us rid the desert of the Jackal Prince and seat his son on the throne. For the first time in days, elation filled Tariqs heart. Is it true my intended is tied up near the waters edge? It is, Your Highness. But she is alive by Kareems hand, your very own physician. Tariq shook his head. He belongs to the Jackal now, have no doubt. If I cross paths with him, he will die. The man bowed, as if expecting nothing less. The Jackals heir ordered your intended to stay tied up, to give the illusion his father still held the upper hand. He wanted you to know he has given her water and a little food to ease her discomfort. He has also told her his name. Tariq smiled. While his heart ached at the thought of Sabine being tortured in the elements, knowing the Jackals heir told her his name sealed the boys fate in his eyes. The young prince believed she would one day be the Viper Princess. Tariq would never forget that. Tell the Jackals heir to come join us. The Scarab Prince is on his way as well. Soon, there will be a new prince roaming this desert. The scout smiled broadly and bowed once more before turning and kicking his horse into a gallop. Ten minutes was all he was willing to give that young prince. It wasnt even mid-morning and the sun was shining hot. His first thought was to free Sabine before the temperature became unbearable. Then hed deal with the Jackal. ~*~ Uncle. Uncle! Trianna ran to catch up with the long strides of the Jackal. It had taken her awhile to find him, but now that she had, relief flowed through her like a cool breeze. He turned, clearly annoyed. No, that was fury written all over his face. She took a step back in shock. What is it, Trianna? His softly spoken words betrayed the malice splayed across his features. But hed taught her to be courageous in the face of adversity. She squared her
140

shoulders and took a deep breath. I no longer wish to marry the Viper. Her uncle was silent. She continued. It is clear to me he loves this Sabine. I have seen him in a vision. Hes threatened to harm me if I come near him. Uncle, Ive come to ask you to offer me to the Falcon. Id prefer him over the Cobra. Without warning, the Jackal struck her, dropping Trianna in the dirt. She didnt feel the fire in her cheek until her mouth was full of sand. You selfish bitch! I dont care about the Falcon or the Cobra. I want the Vipers oasis and you are going to give it to me! Shed seen her uncle unleash his temper upon others, but never upon her. Whenever shed gotten in trouble, it had been her friends whod been punished. Shed learned to tread lightly around the Jackal, but shed also learned that he gave her whatever she asked for. Covering her swelling cheek, she gazed up at him with tears in her eyes. I offered you to the Scarab once and he didnt want you. No one wants you! Go back to your carav, Trianna. You will marry the Viper. It has been decided. What you want does not matter. She opened her mouth. He raised his fist. With a sob, she bowed her head. The Jackal turned and walked away, leaving her groveling in the dirt. A few people turned away while a few quietly snickered. Never in her life had Trianna been so publicly humiliated. With a cry, she stood and ran. ~*~ Sabine had to be seeing things. Blinking a few times, she squinted into the light, but the vision of Trianna running straight for her hadnt disappeared. Within moments, the beautiful woman sank on her knees before her. Sabine, she panted in tears. Sabine, I am so sorry for what Ive done to you. The woman looked over her shoulder. I dont have much time. Trianna disappeared behind Sabine, tugging at her ropes.
141

Bound by magic! Trianna cried. What are youwhat Be quiet, dont talk. Her voice sounded strained. She poked her head around to look Sabine in the eye. I will make everything right by you, Sabine. This will take me a few moments to break through. Why should I trust you? Sabine asked, her tongue feeling thick in her mouth. She shied away from the other womans touch, fearful it was a trick to gain her confidence. Trianna held out her right arm. Because I no longer wear your Viper armband. Sabine stared at her, her befuddled brain not quite comprehending. The armband allowed me to meet your intended in a dream. He made it quite clear he wants nothing to do with me. I waswrong to take your ability to have children. But if youll let me, I will reverse my spell after I save you from this post. We can meet the Viper on the dunes. Why? Sabine croaked. She noticed the purple shadows underneath Triannas right eye. Someone had struck her, and hard at that. Because I have learned you cannot simply take what you want. Was it Sabines imagination, or did Triannas voice just crack? With a loud snap, the ropes holding Sabine gave way. She didnt have the strength to keep herself from falling in the sand. Trianna lifted her and hefted her weight against her fine golden robes. Someone across the oasis pointed at them and shouted. Trianna gasped. We need to leave. Now! Sabine didnt argue as the woman trotted forward, grunting at her burden. Her body felt like a limp noodle. She had no strength in her arms or legs, and she had barely enough strength to hold up her head. But after a few moments of half-running, a cry rose from within the caravan. A long, loud horn sounded from somewhere behind them, while women and children began to scream. The Viper! Trianna shouted. She stopped and they both went down. That is the call to arms. Your intended has
142

been spotted! Sabines stomach leapt inside her. Tariq was here. Hed come to save her! We must get far away from my uncles caravan. We cannot be near the fighting! Sabine didnt have it in her to argue with Trianna. All she could do was hang on as the woman led her to the crest of a tall dune. Not too much farther, Trianna said, out of breath. Hold on. Sabines mouth was so dry, she feared her lips would crack open and bleed right then and there. She didnt even have the spit to lick them. The moment she cried for Trianna to stop, she did, collapsing with Sabine in the sand. Hold still, the woman gasped. Do not move. Once again, Triannas hand hovered over Sabines belly. No! she shouted, trying her hardest to swipe her hand away. Be still! Trianna commanded again, concentrating. A warmth entered Sabines belly, but it was much different than the sharp pain shed felt before. This was soothing, peaceful. Warm. What are you doing? Correcting my mistake, Trianna whispered. A few tears ran down her perfect face. Once she was done, she opened her eyes and gave Sabine a watery, sorrowful grin. It is done. You will bear the Vipers child. Trianna had barely gotten her last word out before she doubled over in what appeared to be terrific pain. She hissed through her teeth and cried out, her cries echoing all around them. Are you all right? Sabine asked, concerned. Iwill neverbe all right. Triannas words were spoken with grief. Sabine didnt want to feel sorry for her. She didnt want to feel pity. But Trianna had saved her, and by her word, given her back her ability to have children. But it appeared to come at a great price. Before Sabine could form the words to ask what was wrong, a male voice boomed behind them.
143

What is this? Have the gods seen fit to smile upon me? Could it be Trianna Pramtash and the Vipers lovely intended sitting on this dune, waiting for me to find them? Turning her head, Sabine looked behind her only to see a man dressed regally in dark blue robes, trimmed in gold. His eyes were dark and expressive, and through his short, well-kept goatee, he smiled down upon them. He was flanked by his men, also in blue, who snickered at his words. Trianna groaned loudly and turned away, curling into the fetal position on the dune. Clearly, she knew this man, but Sabine did not. Who are you? she asked. She was willing to bet by his fine clothes that this man was a caravan prince. The man bowed low with a lopsided grin. I am the Scarab, at your service, my ladies. Yup. She was right.

144

Twenty Three
The Jackals heir had been swift. Hed joined Tariq and his men before Tariq had decided to charge the caravan below. The boy seemed eager for a fight. Once we do this, there will be no turning back, Siraj. The young prince looked at him with eyes older than his years. It is time, Viper. I might be young but I am more than ready to take up my fathers crown. I believe it. And soon, Ill be asking you to call me Tariq. He held out his hand with a smile. The boy grasped his forearm with a wide grin spread upon his face. Below them, a horn sounded, long and low, one single note echoing across the desert. Theyve seen us, Tariq said. Its time to move. You know where Sabine is being held? Yes, I can take you to her. That is your fathers carav? Tariq pointed to the first carriage in the line, gilded in gold with two golden banners of the Jackal flapping in the hot breeze atop it. Siraj nodded. He will not stay there. He will come out to confront you. Oh, Im counting on that. Without waiting for the boy, Tariq kicked his horse. The mount tossed its head, ready to run. Tariq didnt have to look behind him to know his men followed. This way! The Jackals heir galloped to the right. Tariq followed Sirajs horse as he rounded the caravan, avoiding the carriages all together. The women and children were scrambling to hide themselves inside while the men prepared for battle.
145

People, rise up! Tariq bellowed as he passed. I am not here to fight you. It is time the Jackal crown had a new prince! While he rode, he drew his sword, which glinted in the bright sun. Pointing the blade to the sky, Tariq galloped down the line, still following Siraj. The men seemed frozen, too confused to attack. But neither did they lay down their arms. Follow me! the boy prince yelled against the wind. Follow me and I will bring peace to our oasis. No longer will you live in fear! Once they cleared the caravan line, they rounded the waters only to find the post Sabine had been tied to empty and vacant. Where is she? Tariq cried out, jumping from his horse before hed brought him to a complete stop. What has your father done to her? Tracks led through the sand, away from the caravan. She must have escaped! Siraj said, pointing to the ground. Tariqs eyes followed the tracks. She had help. Another horn sounded from atop the very dune where the tracks disappeared. Tariq would have recognized that blessed sound anywhere. With a wide, relieved grin, he looked up, hope filling him to near bursting. The Scarab and his men raised their hands at him in greeting. Lose something? Qadir yelled, laughing. Tariq! The Vipers eyes lit on Sabine, who was leaning against one of the Scarabs men. She wiggled out of his grasp and began stumbling down the dune. Without another thought, Tariq ran to meet her. He scooped her into his arms and held on tight, releasing the breath he hadnt realized hed been holding. She clutched onto him and sobbed into his shoulder, probably too exhausted for words. Without a thought, he pushed his magic into her, cleansing her as well as bringing some relief from her fatigue. Are you all right, my flower? Tears sprang into Tariqs eyes while elation flowed
146

through his veins. He pulled back to kiss her forehead. She was trembling, his Sabine. He damned himself for ever letting her out of his sight. His relief couldnt have been any greater. I am now. Her words melted him. I love you, he whispered in her ear. Dont you dare scare me like that again. She giggled, but her laughter sounded more like sobs. I love you too, Tariq Sayed. Dont let me go. Never. The Scarab loudly cleared his throat, apparently having followed Sabine down the dune. I dont mean to break up this touching reunion, but I thought you might like to know I brought a friend. Tariq glanced up, yet still held Sabine in his strong grip. Qadir merely swept his hand behind him. Following his gaze, Tariqs eyes fell upon a man marching down the dune, dressed in the deepest green. His heart stopped for a moment before slamming back to life. The Falcon. You brought the Falcon Prince! Qadir scoffed. You doubt my connections, Tariq? You wound me. With a loud guffaw, Tariq let go of Sabine long enough to pull the Scarab into a strong hug. I never doubted you, brother. Lets go take care of this tyrant, shall we? The Scarab turned and let his gaze rest on the Jackals heir. Are you ready to become a true prince today, boy? Siraj puffed out his chest. I am. Look. Tariq gazed behind Siraj to the caravan, and watched in awe as scores of men marched to join their forces. Siraj grinned with confidence. The appearance of the Viper, the Scarab and the Falcon have given them courage to fight for their families. It is a mutiny in the desert! The Scarab grinned as well. You, boy, are already the Jackal Prince. Lets find your father. His reign of terror is over. Yes, Tariq said, his mood turning dark once again. That bastard will now answer to me. Sabine, stay on this dune, understand?
147

She nodded. Please be careful. He gave her a swift, hard kiss. Do not worry about me, my flower. Worry about the man who took you from me. Tariq nodded to the others and grasped his sword once more. All four princes, with their legions of men, turned and marched toward the caravan.

148

Twenty Four
The Jackal hadnt found his son. But by the time he heard the call to arms, it didnt matter. His traitorous offspring had no doubt already joined forces with the Viper. Prepare to fight! he yelled to his men, smacking the guards who raced passed him. They jumped to obey, yanking out their swords and shouting at each other to protect the women and children. The Jackal turned on his heel and marched up the caravan line, intent on returning to his own carav. Hed left his sword behind, a mistake he meant to remedy. But hed walked too far in his quest for his son. He had to run. Glancing to the other side of his caravan, he saw the Viper and his men riding past the caravs with swords drawn high. Yet they didnt attack. They called for the Jackals own men to betray him, to join forces with the Viper and the Jackal heir, to overthrow him. A fire burned hot in the belly of the old prince. His reign would not end today. Right before his eyes, Kareem appeared, stumbling out of his own carav, probably to investigate the commotion. Jackal! The faithful physicians eyes were wide, but he swallowed hard and squared his shoulders. My prince, what is going on? What are we to do? Down the line a few caravs back, two of the Jackals guards leapt forward, seemingly intent on following the Viper as he rounded the caravan on his horse. Stop those men, Kareem, the Jackal ordered, pointing at them. Use your power and save my throne! With a mighty heave, the prince shoved Kareem
149

forward and watched as the man grabbed hold of his traitorous guards. Instantly, the men writhed in pain from Kareems agonizing magic. Seeing that pain, knowing the kind of power Kareem wielded, aroused the Jackal. Despite the fray, the Jackals cock sprang to the fore. With a groan, he knew hed need to satiate his lusts or risk the insanity that threatened to take his mind. It had only been getting worse the older he got. But now that he had Kareem, he hoped to keep the insanity at bay by never growing older. When Kareem turned back to him, the insanity crested until it pushed into the Jackals brain. The prince clutched his head, lust riding him hard. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. By the gods, he was drooling. Your Highness? Are you all right? Grasping a handful of Kareems robes, the Jackal continued his sprint to his carav with the physician in tow. If he didnt get there soon, the insanity would demand he take the man here and now. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew now was not the time or place, but he couldnt ignore the swirling need in his gut, the energy that had to be released. Just as he reached his gilded carav, another horn sounded from the dune on the far side of the oasis. The Jackal glanced over his shoulder only to see more men dressed in fine blue and green, ready to descend upon his caravan. Somewhere in his befuddled brain, he knew those colors. They belonged to the Scarab and the Falcon. Let them come! he screamed to no one in particular. Come. He needed to come. Right now. Opening the door, he tossed Kareem into his carav, sprawling the man on the floor. Kareem gazed at the Jackal with fear in his eyes. The princes cock leapt so hard he was almost in pain. Sire, Kareem cried, holding up his hands. What have I done? Are you displeased with me? Get on your knees! ~*~ Viper! Scarab! Men from Jackals caravan called out
150

to them as they ran to join them. You there! Tariq said, pointing one of them out. What is it? I saw the Jackal disappear into his carav not more than two minutes ago. He was pushing his new physician before him. Hes in there! Kareem? Tariq exclaimed. I do not know his name, but I have no doubt the Jackal is slating his lusts with him. We all steer clear of the prince when he gets that evil glint in his eye. Whanow? Qadir cocked his head toward the carav in seeming disbelief. Siraj nodded, confirming the mans words. Its been getting worse, my fathers insanity. I remember when I was a child he would weave his cruel magic, but he hasnt cast in many years. I believe his insanity has twisted his magic within him, making him unable to resist his sexualurges. The Falcon glanced at the boy, revealing three huge scars marring the right side of his face. Hed been luckythe beast that attacked him hadnt taken his eye. What do you know of sexual urges? Siraj blushed brightly. Tariq grinned at his discomfort. If the Jackal is indisposed as we speak, then this will be easy. Shall we? Qadir made a face. I do not wish to carry that image with me for the rest of my life. The Falcon slapped Tariq on the back and laughed out loud. Ill go with you, Viper. Lets catch him with his robes wide open. Qadir held back, keeping watch with his men and ordering them to surround the Jackals carav along with Viper and Falcons men. Tariq knew if any of the old mans followers were still loyal, they wouldnt be able to defend the Jackal without getting cut down by the princes men. But no one seemed interested in coming to the Jackals rescue. And that suited Tariq just fine. With one, swift kick, the door to the Jackals carav busted open. The old man hadnt even bothered locking it. The air stank of sweat and the musk of sex. Tariq wrinkled his nose, but didnt have to look far to find the Jackal and his
151

traitor of a physician. Kareem lay on his belly, moaning in what sounded like pain on the floor, naked to his waist. The Jackal knelt behind him with a look of ecstasy on his face, his own nakedness unheeded. Once he turned his head, his eyes took a moment to focus. You! Tariq pointed his sword at the old prince. You are finished, you disgusting bastard. And you, Viper, will marry my niece. I will have your oasis! Tariq charged into the carav with the Falcon at his heels. The only thing Trianna will receive from me is my retribution for casting her magic upon my intended. Kareem, the Jackal growled. Show the Viper we dont take kindly to threats. The physician made a move to crawl on all fours and winced. I wouldnt, the Falcon said, kicking him back to the floor. In that instant, Kareem grabbed the Falcons ankle. The prince crashed to the floor, writhing and screaming. Thats it. Ooh, just like that! The Jackal began stroking his cock. Without a thought, Tariq surged forward and swung his sword, bringing it down on Kareems arm. The man pulled back with a howlleaving his hand behind. The Falcon stumbled to his feet, doubling over as he coughed uncontrollably. Get out of here, Tariq ordered, pushing the prince to the door. Scarab, I need you! My hand. You cut off my hand! Kareem screamed, clutching onto his arm and bleeding profusely. I will cut off more than that if you continue! Tariq knew he was losing his temper, but he was beyond caring. These two men were lucky they still drew breath. Qadir jumped up the steps just as the Falcon hit the dirt outside. What happened? Kareem can hurt you as well as heal you. Stay away from him, Tariq said. By the gods, Qadir whispered. Young Siraj had found a way to squeeze within the
152

carav behind the Scarab. Father, you and your physician are both hereby ordered to the Bantiem until we decide your fate. The naked prince cackled at his order. You have no authority here, boy! Oh, but he does, Tariq said, still pointing his sword at Kareem. Siraj Pramtash is now recognized as the Jackal Prince by three of his peers and, as it would seem, your entire caravan. All thats left now is to crown him formally in Suridesh. It is you, Nestor Pramtash, who has no authority. The older man pounced, throwing himself at the Scarab with a deafening roar. Both men fell to the floor while Qadir punched and kicked, in an obvious effort to unseat the crazed man atop him. Tariq jumped to get out of the way, unaware that hed stepped closer to Kareem. The man grabbed his leg and an ungodly pain launched throughout Tariqs entire body. Fire mixed with ice and lightning pulsed through him, crackling in his muscles and exploding behind his eyes. He couldnt draw breath and the moisture in his tissue seemed to be sucked dry. With a few sharp thuds, his heart railed within him, demanding oxygen. Tariq panicked. He was going to die. From somewhere in the distance, he heard a battle cry. As suddenly as it began, the horrific pain was gone and Tariq couldnt help but crumple where he stood. Gasping for breath, he looked over his shoulder to see the Scarab standing over Kareem, having kicked him across the royal carav. The man held up his one good hand for mercy from the vengeful prince, but Tariq found his voice. No, Qadir. Let me dole outhis punishment. Nestor shrieked near the door, being held by the throat by his very own son. The boy must have been subduing him with his magic, as his father thrashed and howled, but Siraj would not be moved. By all means, Viper. Kareem is yours to punish. The Scarab stepped out of the way, stooped to the floor, and picked up the sword Tariq had dropped. He stumbled once, but Tariq managed to stand on his
153

weak legs, accepting the sword Qadir handed him. There was nowhere for Kareem to go, and the man knew it. Pressed against the Jackals pedestal throne, he was far away from the door, with no hope of escape. Please, Viper, I beg of you. Mercy! Kareems eyes were wide and he panted wildly, knowing full well what was to come. Kareem, you have betrayed me. You have stolen my intended and tortured her as well. You have tried to kill me, as well as kill the Falcon Prince. Each one of these offenses requires death. Any mercy I may have had for you is now gone. My regret is that I can only kill you once. Kareem attacked, trying to grasp Tariqs ankles in another futile attempt to steal his life. With one mighty swing, Tariq arched his sword and brought it down, separating Kareems head from his shoulders. The mans body collapsed. No! Nestor screeched behind him. Tariq turned and gazed at the man who could not break free of his son. With determined strides, Tariq walked to the old princes discarded robe and took it in his hand. The fine golden fibers worked well to wipe his Viper blade of Kareems tainted blood. The Scarab smiled at Tariqs obvious display of the old princes shame. What shall we do with your father, Jackal? Qadir asked. Nestors eyes widened with fury, yet still, he could not breach Sirajs grasp. The boy wasnt even breaking a sweat holding the man down. Sirajs magic appeared to give him great strength. His punishment for oppressing this caravan for years must be death. But I cannot kill my own father, no matter how much I loathe him. You are not the Jackal, boy, Nestor exclaimed. You will never be a caravan prince. I am the Jackal! Again, Nestor tried to wrestle free of his son while his hand wandered down to stroke his erect cock. Qadir drew his own sword and leveled it at the mans throat. Ill kill him for you, Your Highness. Tariq settled his hand on his old friends shoulder. This punishment is not for us to carry out. Nestors crimes
154

were carried out upon the members of his caravan. It is now up to the new Jackal Prince to decide his fate. Siraj glanced at them then back at his father. A few moments of silence passed before he spoke once more. I declare my fathers fate shall be in the hands of the very caravan he oppressed. It is the people who seek justice, and justice they shall have. The Scarab grinned from ear to ear. I like the new Jackal. Tariq nodded and sheathed his sword. He will make an excellent prince. No, no, please. Siraj, my boy, do not do this. I am your father, you love me. Do not feed me to the wolves. They will not spare a piece of my flesh! And you did not spare a speck of theirs! the new Jackal yelled. I will not deny them the pleasure. Siraj turned and dragged his naked father out of the carav. The older man squealed when his skin connected with the hot sands, but no one seemed to care. Sirajs magic still held him, with Nestors throat firmly entrenched in the boys hand. Hear me, my people! Siraj called, his voice booming across the oasis. By the laws of Jikkar, the Viper, the Scarab, and the Falcon have declared me the new Jackal Prince of our glittering oasis. My first duty as your prince is to grant you retribution upon my father. I only ask that you give him the same mercy that he gave you. With a heave, Siraj tossed the disgraced prince away from him. Nestor hit the sand with a solid thud and cried out in pain. No one hesitated. Within moments, the man was swarmed by dozens of his angry subjects, who were more than ready to draw his blood. Tariq turned away when the sand stained red, but the old princes screams would forever echo in his ears.

Twenty Five
Sabine sat on the dune and watched the Jackals caravan erupt in shouts of triumph. Soon after the princes had emerged from the royal carav, the people lifted young Siraj on their shoulders and carried him to the waters edge, where they tossed him in the water with laughter and celebration. It is tradition, Trianna said next to her. When a new prince is named, it is tradition to throw him into the waters of his oasis. Tonight will be a feast beyond imagining. The people have good reason to celebrate. My uncle is dead. Sabine gazed at the woman, who looked down at the oasis with sad eyes. You are not celebrating. Did you love your uncle that much? Triannas eyes rose sharply to Sabines. No. I loathed the man. He used me for his own gain. Jikkar is a brighter place without him. Then why are you saddened? I am to be punished, she said bitterly. What I did to you was inexcusable. The Viper made it clear what he would do should I harm you. I did not heed him. The Viper will not kill you. Trianna laid her forehead on her knees. There are worse fates than death. I will see to it you are not punished too harshly. Why? Sabine heard the tears in her voice. Because you saved me. Despite what you did to me, you made it right again.
156

I have spent too long under my uncles thumb, Trianna said, staring across the sands. I have become too much like him. I deserve my fate. The womans judgment was definitely in question, but she didnt deserve to be punished as harshly as her uncle. Trianna, listen to me. You have made bad choices but that doesnt make you a bad person. You regretted what you did. You returned to right it. It doesnt matter. My punishment has already begun. What do you mean? Trianna was silent for a few moments. The magic to make you barren was easy to cast, but not so easy to undo. You doubled over in pain, Sabine said, remembering. Triannas light brown eyes found hers once again. She smiled sadly. In order to undo what I had done, I needed to take the magic into myself. Understanding dawned on Sabine. You are barren? The woman bit her lip and nodded, while her eyes filled with tears. Why would you do that to yourself? Why would you willingly accept that? I saw my uncle within myself. I do not want to be like him. But I fear its too late for me. I took the magic within myself because I know the desert princes want nothing to do with me. But youre the only natural born princess in the Golden Desert! Sabines mouth hung wide open in shock. Surely someone wants you. The Cobra does, Trianna said as she wiped her eyes. But he already has an heir. He does not want me to bear him children. He wants me forother things. Sabine remembered the Cobra Prince from writing her book about the Viper. But hes an old man, Trianna. Older than your uncle was! It does not matter. Perhaps that is to be my punishment. It didnt take long before Tariq came walking toward them, with the Scarab and the Falcon following close behind. Sabine stood and put herself between the approaching princes and Trianna.
157

Tariq smiled at her. A new Jackal Prince has risen! Sabine nodded, expecting nothing less, but didnt bother with a smile. Sabine? he asked. What is wrong? She put her hands on her hips and set her shoulders. Viper, I wish to speak on Triannas behalf. I do not wish you or the other princes to treat her harshly. Tariq scoffed and glanced at his peers. She hurt you. That cannot be ignored. She reversed her magic. I can bear your children again. Tariq looked shocked then he smiled broadly. He moved as if to take her in his arms, but Sabine stopped him with her hand. She released me from my bonds and saved me from the Jackal. Tariq gazed down at the woman trembling in the sand. No doubt to save her own hide. Sabines temper rose. No, you dont understand. To reverse her magic, she had to take it within herself. Tariq stared at her, still not comprehending her words. It was the Scarab who broke the silence with a look of disbelief on his face. She is now barren? Trianna sniffled and laid her head on her knees once more. Yes, Your Highness, Sabine said gently. No one spoke for long, uncomfortable moments. Why? The Falcon stepped closer. Trianna shuddered where she sat. It was obvious to Sabine that she was trying to be strong, trying not to break down and show her shame to three of the most powerful men of Jikkar. The new Jackal Prince chose that moment to sprint up the dune with a wide grin on his face. Make that four of the most powerful men of Jikkar. Have I missed something? Siraj asked, elation clearly evident in the way he ran his fingers through his wet hair. Tariq gestured at the Jackals cousin. We are wondering what to do with Trianna. She hurt your intended, Viper, Siraj said. I give her
158

to you to punish. She is no longer welcome in my caravan. Sabine watched with pity as Trianna visibly flinched. I know of one prince who would welcome her with open arms, the Falcon suggested. We are not giving her to the Cobra! The venom in the Scarabs voice shocked Sabine speechless. Tariq looked harshly at his friend. It is my decision to make. A muscle ticked in the Scarabs jaw as he glared right back at the Viper. Tariq, Sabine said, placing her hand on his arm. I beg for you to be merciful. She clearly regrets what she has done. She has been punished enough by denying herself the ability to have children. With a sigh, Tariqs visage softened when his eyes rested on hers. Sabine continued. She is the only born princess of Jikkar. Please, Im begging you. I have no time to punish the woman further, Tariq said, his voice light. I have every intention of marrying you tonight, my flower, and keeping you in my carav until we reach the tent city. Perhaps even longer than that. Sabine blushed at the predatory look he gave her. She had to look away or risk falling into his arms right then and there. Falcon, are you up to the task? Tariq asked. The Scarab scoffed loudly. He will not do it properly. The Falcon Prince chuckled behind his hand while the new Jackal looked confused, as if he had no idea what was going on. Are you saying that you will, my brother? Tariq said, raising a brow. Sabine remembered something Tariq had told her long ago. The Scarab once had feelings for Trianna when they were children. Did he still have them? She had a suspicion the Viper was teasing him. The Scarabs eyes narrowed. If I must. Trianna flinched again at the princes harsh tone. If both the Jackal and the Viper do not want her, I will take her, if only to keep the Falcon from handing her to the Cobra. She might deserve punishment, but she does not
159

deserve a life sentence at the hands of that old tyrant. The Falcon slapped Qadir on the back so hard, Sabine winced. Do you forget she is the niece of an old tyrant? I do not doubt Trianna and the Cobra are a match made by the gods. The Scarab reached for his sword, but Tariq stopped him from drawing it. Qadir, we tease you, this you must know. Sabine watched the Scarabs fury settle on Tariq. Trianna is yours, my friend, the Viper said. Instantly, Qadirs fury was gone, replaced by shock, then a wide, handsome grin. I will remember this, Viper. Between you and the Falcon, it would seem the Jackal is my only friend in the desert. He grabbed the boy by the shoulders and drew him close. Your cousin will not be punished too harshly. You have my word. Tariq and the Falcon laughed out loud and Sabine watched while they hugged each other. I have no doubt her punishment will be swift, Tariq said, winking at Sabine. Trianna shuddered and she wiped her eyes. She was trying to be discrete, but Sabine noticed her tears. I no longer need my Bantiem, QaQadir, Siraj said, clearly uncomfortable at now having the right to speak the Scarabs given name. You may take it to transport her back to Suridesh, if you wish it. The Falcon turned to whisper in Tariqs ear, making the Vipers guffaws ring out around them. The Scarab ignored them and spoke to the boy. I would be forever grateful and indebted to you. Sabine knelt next to Trianna while the men continued to talk and laugh among themselves. Will you be all right? she asked. I once dreamed of belonging to the Scarab, the woman whispered. But now that I do, I am terrified of him. He will not hurt you, Trianna, surely even you must know that. She shook her head. He already has. Sabine was left to ponder the womans words as the Scarabs men were summoned to escort Trianna to the Jackals Bantiem.
160

Twenty Six
Here it is! The young Jackal ran toward the crowd with a huge grin on his face, waving the Viper armband back and forth. His subjects laughed when he tripped suddenly at his obvious eagerness to hand the trinket to the Viper. Even Sabine couldnt hide her giggles. But before Siraj could give it to Tariq, the Scarab took the band. Thank you, my boy. It was in Triannas carav, on the floor, Siraj explained. Of course it was, Tariq said sourly. Sabine jabbed her elbow into his ribs. He grunted and gave her a look of mock indignation. She smiled sweetly and batted her eyes at him. He shook his head and turned back to face the Scarab, to begin their wedding ceremony. The sun had gone down a few hours before, and not too long after, Sabine had been locked away in Sirajs carav with Jalil, preparing for the occasion. Shed been more excited than nervous, knowing Tariq didnt want to pass up the opportunity of getting married by the Scarab, even if it was at the Jackals oasis instead of the tent city. Despite being a cook, Jalil had worked wonders with Sabines hair, twisting all sorts of leather straps into her tresses, making curls and braids. A few women in the Jackals caravan had loaned Sabine their finest robes to wear for the occasion. She lamented they were the Jackals gold and not the deep red colors of the Viper, but shed be wearing Tariqs colors soon enough.
161

Now that she stood with Tariq in front of the Jackals entire caravan, she couldnt help but check him out. Hed taken the time to clean up as well. His robes werent overly regal, but he wore them as if they were, the rich red contrasting perfectly with his skin. His black hair was brushed back and his short-cropped beard had never looked so well-kept. The man was gorgeous. He still took her breath away, and it had seemed like a thousand years since shed seen his face. Sabine didnt even notice when the Scarab began the ceremony. Her entire world centered on one man, her Viper Prince. He turned to her and smiled. Great. Now she was nervous. She was going to be a princess, the wife of a great caravan leader. Could she deal with the responsibility? Could she come to grips with being royalty and having people calling her Your Highness? She was just a romance author from Rosemont, Oregon after all. Once she married Tariq, her old life would be over. With a sigh, Sabine closed her eyes. It was already over. Shed died there, in her car accident. It was time to say goodbye to everything she once knew in that life. Now, she was going to build a new life, with the man she loved by her side. Her thoughts brought her back to the Scarab and his words. Tariq Sayed, Viper Prince of the Golden Desert, you stand before me with your intended. You have chosen Sabine Santiago to be your Viper Princess. Do you pledge to serve her for the rest of your life, to give her children and protect her with your very life? I pledge it, Tariq said. The Scarab handed him the small dagger he had tucked in his belt. According to the law you must pledge by blood. Sabine gasped. Tariq merely grinned at her. With a quick swipe, he cut the pad of his thumb and held it to her lips. Its all right, he whispered. Just a drop to bind us. Sabine opened her mouth and Tariq touched his blood to her tongue. She tasted its salty, iron tang and swallowed hard.
162

The Scarab turned to her. Sabine Santiago, of the world Earth, you stand before me with your intended. You have chosen Tariq Sayed to be your Viper Prince. Do you pledge to serve him for the rest of your life, to give him children and love him until your dying day? I pledge it, she said, mimicking what Tariq had said. Once again the Scarab spoke. According to the law, you must pledge by blood. Tariq handed her the small dagger, hilt first. Not deep, he told her. She nodded. Turning the blade, she attempted to use the clean side, but Tariq stopped her. We must bind in blood, he said gently. Use the side I used. Im sorry, she answered, trembling. Ive never done this before. Neither have I. He grinned. She grinned back. Using the same edge of the blade, Sabine cut her right thumb, just enough to draw a drop of blood. She held it to his mouth. Tariq grabbed her hand in his and suckled her thumb with gusto. A few more rowdy caravan goers whistled at the display. Tariqs eyes glittered with sinful promises. Sabines knees almost gave out. Tariq and Sabine, the Scarab said in his booming voice, you have pledged yourselves to each other by blood. Now, it is time for the Viper Prince to claim his princess. Qadir gave Tariq the Viper armband. Tariq placed it over her hand, slowly inching it up her right arm. Once it came to rest on her bicep, the band glowed, and the red eyes of the viper sparkled of their own accord. With the gods blessings, you are married. Go, and rule your caravan with firm hands and gentle hearts. A shout went up then another and another until Tariq took Sabine in his arms. The roar of the peoples elation was nothing compared to the roar in Sabines ears. She was his, well and truly. The Viper Princess. The moment his mouth claimed her lips, the desert fell away. Her hands found the back of his head, where her fingers dug into his hair. She was determined to keep him
163

close. It had been much too long since theyd made love and Sabine was feeling the strain. She thrust her tongue into him, and moaned at his heavenly taste. Tariq ripped his mouth away. None of that, my flower, he said with a chuckle. Or I might disgrace the newest princess of the Golden Desert right here in the sand. Before she could answer him, he attacked her neck, kissing and suckling his way up her skin. She tossed her head back to give him access and glanced at the sky. Tariq! she exclaimed. What? he asked, raising his head just enough to rub his nose across her cheek. Look. The lovers are touching. He followed her gaze. Pamos had finally caught Thiadra, his prize. They are making love in the sky, she whispered to him. Anyone who makes love under their light when the moons are touching is said to be richly blessed. Sabine wrapped her arms around Tariqs neck and pressed her forehead against his. She was barely aware that the crowd had dispersed, apparently giving them some semblance of privacy. When? Later. We must sit with the Jackal at his feast. It is his celebration of ascension and he would be disgraced if he did not honor us in our marriage. Not too much later, I hope. Tariq groaned and closed his eyes. Not long at all. I will not be able to keep my hands to myself all night. A scent quickly rose in the air, of roasting meat and fine foods. A few bards began playing their strange, stringed instruments, lending a mystical romance to the night. Fires had been lit and people were laughing and smiling while the children danced. Mmm, Im hungry, Sabine said the moment her stomach protested. So am I. I suppose I could do with some food, too. It took Tariq a moment to get her meaning, but when
164

he did, his handsome smile made her stomach leap inside her. He kissed the tip of her nose and led her to the banquet.

165

Twenty Seven
The Jackal has generously offered for us to stay in his carav while heredecorates his fathers for himself. Tariq whispered in Sabines ear after theyd both eaten and enjoyed the festivities. However, I thought Id have my horse prepared and we could ride the dunes. Enjoy the night. He didnt move away from her, he merely kissed her neck, right below her earlobe. A second later, his tongue snaked out to taste her skin. She trembled with desire. We can leave now? she asked, her voice unsteady, yet filled with hope. Tariq chuckled at her tone. We have stayed long enough. How long before your horse is ready? He is ready right now. Tariqs hot breath made her shiver. She pulled back to gaze into his eyes with astonishment. With a nod, he looked behind her. Glancing over her shoulder, Sabine saw Garen holding the reins to Tariqs horse near the caravanwithout a saddle. Take me where you will, Viper, she said, holding her hand out to him. He took it and stood, bringing her with him. Thank you, Jackal, for your hospitality this night, Tariq bellowed. Siraj smiled and held up a golden flagon in salute. And to you, Scarab, for binding me with my princess. Qadir nodded with a knowing grin. And many thanks to the Falcon, for coming to my aid when I needed him. I will not forget it. The Falcon Prince had a mouth full of food, but nodded

vigorously. The crowd around them erupted with laughter. The Viper Princess and I will now take our leave. Do not wait up. More laughter rose into the night and Sabine blushed, but soon forgot all about their audience the moment Tariq boosted her onto his horse. In one smooth jump, her husband leapt behind her as if hed practiced the move every day of his life. But she thought no more on it the moment his arms curled around her to grasp the reins. Sabine leaned into him and sighed contentedly. Tariq walked the horse to the edge of the caravan then kicked him into a run once they were clear of the caravs, galloping up the far dune and away from the oasis. Sabine closed her eyes and drank in the cool air. After all shed been through, it was glorious. The heat of Tariqs body warmed her at the same time, while the rocking of the horses body between her legs made her yearn for the Viper to claim her as his wife. Before long, Tariq slowed the horse until it came to a stop, shrouded in darkness with only the lovers in the sky to guide them. Not even the oasis behind them could be seen. The animal tossed its head, making the tassels on its bridle jingle an exotic tune. Tariq didnt say a word, he merely stroked the top of her thighs until her robes hiked high enough for his palms to disappear beneath them. It wasnt long before his mouth sought her neck once more, working its way up to her ear. I missed you, he whispered. Instantly, she was wet for him. Her clit ached for his touch while his hands continued to get bolder, roaming to her inner thighs. Sabine reached behind her, over her head, to touch him as well. I was terrified the Jackal was going to kill me. I thought Id never see you again. She wove her fingers into his hair, frustrated that was all she could reach of him. One of Tariqs hands wandered higher underneath her robes, capturing her breast. Instantly, Sabines pussy clenched and she gasped. Between his fingers, Tariq squeezed her nipple. She couldnt help itshe pushed herself against the horse, trying to ease her ache.

I wouldnt have stopped until Id found you, he said, inching higher up her thigh until he lightly brushed her pussy with his other hand. I would give my life for you. Sabine shuddered the moment his finger delved between her lower lips, stroking her clit. She bit her tongue in an effort to quell her moans, but it wasnt working. The hard length of Tariqs cock dug into her back. She arched against him to rub it. You came for me, she said, working her hips in time with his fingers. Yes, my flower, I did. Now, I want you to come for me. Tariqs other hand pinched her nipple once more while he continued to rub her again and againand again. Before long, Sabines sharp cries of pleasure were engulfed by the desert as she came hard and swift. Her hand guided Tariqs lips to hers as she kissed him over her shoulder, plunging her tongue within his mouth, moaning her ecstasy. You are so wet for me, Sabine, Tariq growled as he kissed her. I need to be inside you. He didnt give her time to answer before he was turning her on the horse to face him. Sabine cried out at the unexpectedness of it, but managed to swing her leg the other way while clutching onto him at the same time. The horse side-stepped, but Tariq calmed it while Sabine returned the favor and kissed his neck. She gave him a few bites of her own. She didnt wait for him to do it himself, she merely hiked up his robes just as hed done to her. Shed had the foresight not to put on any undergarments. Apparently, so had Tariq. His cock stood proud in the moonlight, ready to take her. Sabine grasped his flesh in her hand and fondled him, squeezing him tight. He gasped, but thrust his hips, gazing her right in the eye. With both his hands, he took hold of her ass and lifted her against him. Guide me inside you, he commanded. She was powerless to resist him. She rubbed the head of his cock against her clit, slicking his length before slowly and wondrously sheathing him. Tariq forced her hips down until he couldnt advance any further.

You fill me, Tariq. Every part of me. How did I ever live without you? He silenced her with a torrid kiss, fisting his hand in her hair. She winced, but it only served to excite her more. With a short jab, she tried to thrust against him, but didnt have the leverage on the horse to lift herself up. Tariqs strong arm held her in place while the other grabbed the reins. Hold on to me, he panted. Let the horse do the rest. He gave her a slight nod, telling her to trust him before she clutched on to his shoulders. With a sharp kick and a shrill whistle, Tariqs horse once again shot off across the desert. Up and down she went, slapping against Tariqs hips as he thrust them in time with his horses strides. His cock rammed into her, over and over, without mercy. Within seconds, Sabine was coming, shuddering against him, but he wasnt finished. With another kick, he made the horse go even faster. At that pace, Tariq hit her g-spot so many times, she couldnt help but come, pulsing around him, squeezing him inside her until she had no idea how many orgasms shed had. They seemed to meld into one long, glorious explosion as they rode. But the moment Tariqs orgasm came, his pleasure was so hard, so intense, that his arm fairly crushed her to him while he slowed his horse, crying out at the same time. Once his horse had stopped, the beast gave a snort and a whinny, jingling its tassels once more. But Tariq was a wild man. He tore open Sabines robes to suckle her breasts, feeding each one to his eager mouth. He pulled and tugged on her nipples ruthlessly with his teeth. OhGod! Sabine was acutely aware his cock was still deeply embedded within her when she leaned back, bringing him with her. Tariq, she whispered, clutching onto his hair. Viper. My Viper. Instantly, his mouth was on hers, stealing her very breath. Before she knew it, hed pulled away and jumped off

his horse, only to pull her down with him. With a sharp smack on the animals rump, he made sure the horse trotted a little distance away. We dont have a carpet, he teased, laying her in the sand while looming over her. I dont care, she answered, yanking him down on top of her. Can your magic keep the sand at bay? She arched a brow. He smiled down at her and nodded. For you, my Viper Princess, I will pluck the lovers out of the sky. Then fill me again. I love your cock. Her choice of words turned him wild once more, and for the next few heated moments, she could think of nothing else but his possession as he thrust hard into her, claiming her heart and her soul. The moment his pleasure crested, hers did too. She had a feeling his magic had planned it that way. But she didnt much care as they came together, entwining their love as well as their bodies. Tariq lay on top of her, breathing hard while resting his forehead on her shoulder. She gazed up at the moons and gasped in awe. They were now distinctly glowing a faint red. We are blessed, my prince, she said with a grin. The lovers smile upon us. They wear your colors. Tariq looked up then back at Sabine. Our colors, he corrected. And yes, we are blessed, my flower. But I already knew that. Sabine wrapped both her arms and legs around the man she loved and held on tight.

Twenty Eight
It was almost morning when Tariq and Sabine rode back to the Jackals caravan. Tariq held his wife tight against him as they walked the horse, in no hurry. Their lovemaking had been exquisite, and had quite possibly moved the whole of Jikkar. He hadnt been able to get enough of her, and even now, wished they had more time to spare before the sun rose. Just as they had been about ready to retire for the evening, Siraj had graciously offered to give Tariq, his princess, and his men a ride back to his own oasis with the Jackals caravan, to meet up with his people. Tariq had jumped at the chance. Even though riding the caravan was slower than traveling by horse, he didnt relish the thought of taking the new Viper Princess across the harsh desert with nothing but robes to protect her delicate skin from the sun. Tariq? Sabines voice caressed him and made every hair on his body stand on end. Hed never tire of hearing her say his name. Hmm? Does every wife of the caravan princes have an armband of their husbands totem? Yes, he answered. Every prince is given a band to present to his wife on the day of their marriage. I was going to write that into my book, but Ididnt get the chance. Speaking of my book, is that how you knew where to find me? Tariq nodded. I had remembered you read the scene about the fire to me moments before it happened. After youd been taken, I read the rest of the story youd written

and realized you must have been able to somehow see your future. I think the armband gave me that knowledge. He pondered that for a moment. Its possible, but I dont think so. What do you mean? My mother enchanted it to bring me the one woman I could love. With his words, he gave her a gentle squeeze. I also believe she set some kind of enchantment to protect you from harm. Which is why I was able to come to you in our dreams when I was wearing it. And why you didnt see any more hallucinations after Kareem had poisoned you. Sabine shivered. Do not worry, Tariq said darkly. I dealt with that traitor. He will never harm us again. His wife remained silent. He continued. Here on Jikkar, everyone can use magic. Some magic is universal, like cleansing yourself or lighting your lamps. Other magic is unique. Some powers only a few people can do. Like Jalil reading peoples minds, she said. Yes, Tariq agreed. And like the way Kareem was able to hurt people as well as heal them. I believe you have your own unique magic too. You can see bits of the future. But I wasnt born on Jikkar. I dont think that matters. What of Karrin? I cannot bring myself to believe she was in on Kareems plot. She wasnt, Tariq assured her. Jalil has told me that much. By now, Im sure Jalil has informed her of her husbands death. I do not know how she will take it. But she will be welcome to ride in our caravan for as long as she wishes. She also has the power of a physician, and Im now in dire need of one. Sabine chuckled at his tone then turned more serious. And what of Trianna? Will the Scarab harm her? Tariq grinned broadly. No. The man claims otherwise, but its obvious to anyone with eyes that Qadir cares for her. They were close as children when the Jackal and the Scarabs

father would both rest in the tent city. My father was on a different timetable than the Jackal, so I never got the chance to meet Trianna, save for twice. Now that I have freed her from our engagement, Qadir is overjoyed. You enjoyed teasing him. He could hear the disapproval in her voice and laughed. Yes, I did, Tariq admitted. The Scarab is in denial. He wants Trianna, but hes convinced himself that he doesnt. The Falcon and I were merely trying to tell him in so many words that we dont believe his ruse for a moment. If he has such feelings for her, then why did he agree to punish her? Like I punished you? he asked. Sabine looked over her shoulder at him as they rode. You dont think he will? I think hell keep her locked up in the Jackals Bantiem, but I also believe hell be in that cell with her. She chuckled. What did the Falcon say to you when he whispered in your ear? He said hed bet his caravan that the Scarab would have rather ridden Trianna all the way back to Suridesh than throw her in that Bantiem. Sabine gasped loudly and smacked his shoulder. Is that where you got the idea, Tariq Sayed? She arched a brow. He merely gave her a suggestive grin and kissed her cheek just as the sun crested the dunes.
