October. The final event was held at Saint Augustines college in Cape Coast with eight senior high schools from Western, and Central regions from the 12th to 13th of October 2012. A few months before RiSE 2012 teams were tasked with solving two real-world problems (AUTONOMOUS RESCUE CHALLENGE and Multi Grain Color Sorter Challenge) using LEGO MINDSTORMS technology to design a custom made autonomous robot to solve these problems. The two challenges are both inspirational and immensely practical. RiSE makes science exciting and showcases some of the most interesting things that technology can do.

2012
AUTONOMOUS RESCUE CHALLENGE The RiSE 2012 Autonomous Rescue Challenge used the Australia RoboCup Junior Rescue course. The competition mirrors a real life-threatening situation where a victim is stuck in a mine tunnel. With the clock ticking, the robots compete by following a winding line on a field course to find the victim - artificial intelligence at its best! On the way the robot will encounter short cut opportunities that will challenge the most adroit programmer. After the robot finds the victim in the tunnel the robot pushes the victim to a green safe area. The team with the fast time over six rounds wins the competition. MULTI GRAIN COLOR SORTER CHALLENGE For food safety, the food industry employs high quality grain processing machinery to remove diseased grains with contaminants, foreign seeds and stones etc. In addition, to food safety, value is added to the product by grading the grains e.g. low protein grain, high protein grain etc. . RiSE 2012 invites you to build a robot to sort a cup full of four unique mixed Ghanaian grains (just to name a few e.g. kidney beans, large beans, cocoa beans, coffee beans, cola nuts, fruit berries, etc.) by colour into four bins in the fastest time possible. The size of each grain shall be between 8mm x 4mm x 3mm to 16mm x 8mm x 6mm (length x width x height).

RO 2012 COMMENCED in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from the 9th to 11th of November. Archbishop Porter Girls Senior High School (Takoradi) and Saint Augustines College (Cape-Coast) teams made history at the games as they became the first Ghanaian teams to participate in the World Robot Olympiad (WRO). The outstanding performance of Archbishop Porter Girls Senior High School (Takoradi) and Saint Augustines College (Cape-Coast) in the regular 16 to 19 years category left an indelible mark on their peers from across the world. Archbishop Porter Girls Senior High School team were the only all girls team out of 76 teams from over 30 countries in the regular 16 to 19 years category WRO 2012. Both Ghanaian teams used the event as an inspirational opportunity to display their skills and
knowledge before the world. The qualification rounds for the regular 16 to 19 years category WRO 2012 had 76 teams from over 30 countries and was dynamic and competitive with exciting climax where teams from Ghana, China, South Korea, Germany, Denmark, Japan, India, Australia, Hong Kong, Mexico, Philippines, Singapore, Ukraine and South Africa missed out on a berth to the quarter finals (ranked top 8 teams out of 76 teams). before I joined RiSE I had no idea about what the importance of the theoretical part of science had with the practical aspect. As a result I didnt value anything practical but now I am proud to say that I actually enjoy the practical aspect more than ever. Thanks to RISE. Jacinta Yayra Archibald, St. Louis , Second Year
RiSE has made me realize that there was a lot more to do in science apart from medicine and now I have a clearer picture of what I want to do in the future., Michelle Koramah Yeboah-Manu, OLA, Ho (VR, Girls), Third Year RiSE has increased my confidence in approaching people Im not familiar with , Dora Akusika Vondee, Accra Girls, Accra (GR Girls),Second Year RiSE has made a better person out of me in terms of patience. I know I am not the most patient person I know and the programing of the robots was really challenging and one had to keeping trying this helped with my anger issues., Hilary Alison Afia Sarpong, Tema International (GR -Co. Ed), Second Year
.... RiSE helped my ability to think faster and more accurately under pressure and also has boosted my confidence. It has given me a new found love for math science and technology. It has also helped my teamwork skills. Ever since I started the RiSE program physics in school has been a walk in the park for me due to my practical application of math and science., Abdul-Wajid Tsigabaatia,
