the score close during the first quarter, trailing the Quakers by a few points. As the game progressed, the Quakers kept the ball in
MFS side of the court and won the game, 52-21. Above, the Quakers Joe Salera (25) leaps to score a scoring basket.

High schools Legally Blonde:
The Musical starts this week
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
Every year, Moorestown High
School Theater produces two the-
atrical works a fall play and a
spring musical. Following the
philosophical, serious nature of
Our Town, this years spring
musical is more upbeat and
comedic. MHS Theater is present-
ing Legally Blonde: The Musi-
cal starting on Thursday, Feb. 28,
in Moorestown High Schools au-
ditorium.
Derived from the popular
movie featuring Reese Wither-
spoon (Elle Woods) as the protag-
onist, Legally Blonde, the musi-
cal, is amusing, theater director
Greg Harr said.
We wanted to do something
upbeat and fun. It makes it a bet-
ter experience for the students,
Harr said.
We did Our Town in the fall,
which was deep, heavy and seri-
ous. We wanted something a little
bit more upbeat.
In the musical, Elle Woods,
played by senior Kelly DelDuca,
recently graduated from UCLA
with major in fashion merchan-
dizing. Elle is expecting to be en-
gaged to her long-time boyfriend
Warner, played by senior Zach
Latino. He unexpectedly breaks
up with her, goes off to Harvard
Law School, and Elle does every-
thing she can to get him back.
She decided to win him back.
She is going to work hard, she is
going to get accepted into Har-

Legally Blonde: The Musical will be performed on Feb. 28, March 1,
2, 8, and 9 at 7:30 p.m. A free performance for seniors will be held on
Wednesday, March 6, at noon. Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $10
for students/seniors. To order tickets visit www.showtix4u.com, call
778-6610 or email jranson@mtps.com. Moorestown High School is
located at 350 Bridgeboro Road.
vard Law School, follow him and
prove how serous she is, Harr
said.
When comparing the musical
to the movie, Harr said the musi-
cal is catchier.
The movie stands very well by
itself. But the music is catchy. Its
enjoyable the first time you hear
it.
The music is stuck in your
head in a good way, he said.
The musical, like the movie,
will also have two dogs as part of
the performance Elles dog
Bruiser, a pampered Chihuahua,
and Paulettes dog, Rufus.
Harr said both dogs belong to
students.
Its always fun seeing a dog on
stage, he said.
With 54 students on the cast, 18
in the orchestra, and 25 to 30 be-
hind the scenes, Harr said the lev-
els of experience on stage vary.
Students who are in the musi-
cal might be in their 20th show,
and there are some students
where this is the first show they
have ever done, he said.
Senior Nicole Varela is wit-
nessing the play in a different
light. Instead of in the audience,
she is on stage in the perform-
ance.
Harr said Nicole was primarily
involved in athletics.
Participating in a school play
had been something I wanted to
do throughout high school. Just
as a high school goal. I am a sen-
ior this year so its kind of my
last opportunity, Nicole said,
adding she is nervous about being
on stage for the first time.

ness queen accused of murder

for Legally Blonde: The Musi-
cal she wanted to be a part of the
performance.
Somehow, I am a pretty good
jump roper. I got the part of
Brooke she is the workout
woman on trial.
I wooed them over with my
athletic jump roping skills, she
said jokingly.
She is counting the days until
opening day. But unlike Nicole,
this is not Rhy Scheibes first per-
formance.
Performing in four spring mu-
sicals and three fall plays, Rhys
said his performance in Legally
Blonde: The Musical as Emmett
Forrest is different from his per-
formance in Our Town as the
stage manager.
Its been really fun. Just earli-
er this year we did Our Town.
That was just a really fun role for
me to kind of explore a lot of phi-
losophy, Rhys said. That show
made me think a lot, and I really
enjoyed that.
I think this one, obviously
doesnt have as much philosophi-
cal weight, but I think its a really
fun show.
Between the crew preparing
costumes and designing sets, to
the cast perfecting their dancing,
singing and acting before the
opening performance, Harr said
the idea behind the school per-
formances is about more than
having fun.
Students learn about acting,
stage management, set construc-
tion, costumes and more. But to
add to the learning experience,
Harr said Legally Blonde: The
Musical, like the other plays per-
formed at the high school, has a
positive message.
In the end, Elle learns to be
herself. She doesnt need to
change to impress other people,
and to be someone she is not to
get other people to like her. Its
done in a very funny way, but its
really a good thing for young peo-
ple and for any audience to under-
stand, he said.

thinking positive thoughts,
and nice weather will be here soon

Ignore the snow, which seems to be
constantly coming down but hardly
sticking. Ignore the freezing forecasts.
Just think spring. Just think sun. Just
think short-sleeve shirts.
Thats how we at The Sun are keep-

through the day.
As we scan the weather wire, look-
ing for the opportunity to crack open
our windows, were also preparing our
expanded sports coverage for the
spring season. On March 13, youll see
a high school sports spring preview
special section a stand-alone piece
previewing each high school spring
sport, with full schedules for the entire
season and feature stories as well.
Our editors are reaching out to
every high school coach for the spring
season for the section. But were call-
ing on parents, coaches and even play-
ers to participate as well.
Sports will be a major focus of up-
coming issues of The Sun, as youll
soon see. And not just high school var-

community sports teams.
But we cant do it all by ourselves.
We need the help of the extended com-

Dear parents and guardians,
The safety of our children and staff has
been and will continue to be of paramount
importance to the Board of Education,
staff members and myself. Over the past
few months, our school personnel and the
Board of Education have analyzed our
seven buildings, investigated additional se-
curity measures based on a professional
safety audit, practiced emergency drills
and tightened procedures throughout the
district.
Although scrutiny of the precautions we
implement to safeguard staff and students
is ongoing, rest assured our schools are
very safe.
To complement what we do in the dis-
trict, the Moorestown Police Department
has met with members of our board and
administration to coordinate regular but
random visits to schools by uniformed offi-
cers during their patrols.
Present personnel precludes daily stops,
but officers will make these visits frequent-
ly. Our continued partnership with our out-
standing police department is greatly ap-
preciated.
These visits began on Friday, Feb. 22.
The principals have notified staff mem-
bers who will then support the children in
understanding the purpose of these visits.
Our intent is to not alarm anyone when a
police officer is in the building. These vis-
its should be considered a comfort to staff
and students knowing our police depart-
ment is working with us to ensure and pre-
serve everyones safety.
I would suggest taking a moment to
speak with your child within the next few
days and explain the important role our of-
ficers play throughout the town. Our stu-
dents should maintain a balance of rever-
ence and approachability toward the po-
lice. Thank you very much for your time in
this very important matter.
Very truly yours,
Brian J. Betze

total expenditures and an in-

per $100 assessed valuation.
He said last year voters ap-
proved $100,000 for the purchase
of a new off-road fire vehicle. The
cost of the vehicle is now being
included in this years budget so
the department can use current
capital funds for the purchase, he
said in the announcement.
Newcomer Bradley J. Kenney
and incumbent Charles Schuster
will serve three-year terms on the
board. Both candidates received
126 votes.
Kenney is a long-time
Moorestown resident, returning
to his hometown after he graduat-
ed college. He joined the fire de-
partment three years ago and de-
cided he wanted to run for a seat
on the fire commission.
I have a lot of motivation, a lot
of eagerness, and a lot of commit-
ment in serving the community,
Kenney said.
Moorestown Fire District No. 2
residents approved the 2013 budg-
et by a margin of 106-16.
District No. 2s budget will
raise $702,612 taxation. An in-
crease of $6,347, or a .9 percent in-
crease from 2012, board adminis-
trator Elizabeth Booth said.
Residents also elected two fire
commissioners, incumbent
Jacqueline Grant and newcomer
William Ruggiano.
Grant currently sits on the fire
commission as vice president.
She will serve another three-
years.
Ruggiano, retired fire chief of
35 years, said he hopes to keep the
fire district running at a steady
pace.
As former chief, I know quite a
bit about the internal workings of
the department, he said.
Voters approved the repaving
of Lenola Fire Stations parking
lot at no more than $70,000 for the
2014 fiscal year, she said.
Booth said the funding to
repave the parking lot would
come from reserved funds.
Voters also approved the pur-
chase of a replacement vehicle
for the fire marshal. The cost of
the vehicle is not to exceed
$38,000, she said and the funding
will also come from reserved
funds.
Since the township has recent-
ly gone through a town wide re-
assessment, the 2013 fire taxes
cannot be calculated since the in-
formation will change, Booth
said.
