ALASKA 7355 WCBC Anchor Point, English sce at 1235 UT Febr 11, about exaltation of Jews and King on bible reading... Great signal S=9+35dB into Nara-JPN remote rx unit. Station ID at 1237 UT by female, followed by guitar player religious song. // 9615 kHz, but much tiny on S=7-8 level. Followed about Chicago Tribune retired editor writer report in the news bussiness of the 60ties. (wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Febr 11) ANGOLA 4949.76 Febr 14 at 0102 UT, amid all the LA and Asian carriers and some with audio around the 60m band, I find this JBA African carrier, measured as 6 x 40 Hz clix below 4950 kHz via the DX-398 on the porch, certainly within margin of error to the off-frequency everyone is reporting from RNA, 4949.74 kHz. Another log based on little but precision frequency, as no audio for me tho it's being reported with much improved modulation lately. (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Febr 14) Angola measured on 4949.748 kHz at 0048 UT Febr 15. (wb.) AUSTRALIA 11749.983 HCA Global from Kununuma Australia site, female religious chorus, S=8 in Germany at 0810 UT Febr 14. Historia de Calera de Tango Chile: Report about the large shortwave radio station in Calera de Tango, Chile which was originally built by the Pinochet government for use as The Voice of Chile, and was later sold to the Christian Vision religious broadcasting organization. DIEGO GARCIA [BIOT - BRITISH INDIAN OCEAN TERRITORY] 12759 log before 0200 last May 15. AFRTS AFN DIEGO GARCIA. You'd never know there is any SW from the WRTH 2013 national radio listing under BIOT, and you'd never know there is anything other than Los Angeles relays in

the first entry under USA, AFRTS in the international sexion. Nor in the SW frequency sexion would you know where to find its listings, as "12759 3 [kW] DGA DGA AFRTS(AFN Feeder) is all it says. Diego Garcia is not a country header anywhere else in the book. Nor would you know the time schedule for frequency changes. Aoki shows 02-14 for this frequency and 14-02 UT for 4319 kHz which is anyway totally blocked here by ute. I also hunted thru past months' DG logs in DXLDs, mainly for an e-mail address. Found this: "Estimado Ernesto, con mucho gusto: AFN desde Diego Garcia: <QSL @ mediacen.navy.mil> Con copia a: <gray @ mediacen.navy.mil> <QSL @ dodmedia.osd.mil> (Dino Bloise, FL, ibid.) Doesn't look like any of those would go direct to DG. (gh, dxld) DIEGO GARCIA 12759-USB mode, Febr 14 at 0056 and 0106 UT chex, nothing audible from AFN tonight, as it was readable 48 hours earlier and detectable 24 hours earlier. Apparently you never know just when they will switch from 4319-USB, but 12 MHz is likely to be on the edge propagationally. (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Febr 14) 4319usb AFRTS AFN Diego Garcia heard pop music at 0030-0038 UT, TXion stopped at 0038 UT Febr 15, TX off. S=7 signal noted on remote unit in Eastern Europe. I had to notch out a digital STANAG like signal on 4315.5 to 4318.0 kHz. And set mode to USB portion. Due of loss of propagation to rx units in Europe, Moscow, Nara-JPN and Australia I couldn't trace any AFN signal on 12759usb in 0039 to 0115 UT periode. (wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Febr 15) FRENCH GUIANA [tentat. - or HRI at Furman, South Carolina?] KBS on 9605, testing a new frequency. 9605 on 15 Febr at 0100-0113 UT FRENCH GUYANA (Relay), KBS in Spanish. ID in English, then start of the program in Spanish. Om presents newscast. Testing a new frequency for South America. Signal almost local, 44444. In // 11635 kHz GUF, but with a delay of seconds, also with good signal. (Jorge Freitas-BRA, dxld Febr 15) KBS on 9605 kHz, testing a new frequency. S=9+25 to +30dB signal strength in Iowa and California posts at 0120 UT. S=9+20dB in Vancouver Isl. and NY / Massachusetts. 9605 only registered on hfcc list for WHRI English on Mondays 01-02 UT ... (wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Febr 15) GABON re Africa No. 1 broadcasts. Yes, as usual Moyabi on 9580 kHz even is on air at 19 UT, in this European winter night, signal is S=9+15dB up to +20, and set a deep notch filter here, to the wandered adjacent Moroccoan on 9579v kHz. ... (wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Febr 12) GEORGIA/AZERBAIJAN re Voice of Abkhazia. A fellow ham in Australia recommended that I contact you. We at KTWR are looking for ways to expand our shortwave ministry to the ANZ/South Pacific Region. We currently only broadcast 18 minutes each day M-F and 30 minutes on Saturday. We specialize in Christian programs, but we also can relay for other broadcasters. I am trying to contact folks in that area to see what they suggest for programs we should try to air. Would you help me with program ideas of your own? In case any of the folks in that area want to tune us in, the broadcasts start at 1000 UT on 11840 kHz. Thanks for your help. 73, Mike, NH2MS (via John Wright, Jan/Febr Australian DX News direct and via dxld) INDIA Aizawl SW Masts. I guess - probably only the two 41 mb towers visible. On 14 December, local newscasts in at least 12 out of 20 Italian regions informed listeners

about frequency changes and/or the closure of mediumwave broadcasts. The announcement was aired only once but worries are growing about a possible winding up of all MW operations by RAI. The RAI mediumwave network was starkly reduced in 2006, and earlier last year also when Naples (657 kHz) and Bari (1116 kHz), two historical stations, were dismantled. Sources agree that 6 to 12 stations are to survive but no official information is available nor is any announcement repeated. Italradio was able to confirm that Pisa Coltano on 657 kHz will continue; plans have been prepared to use it for DRM experiments. Italian mediumwave stations are operated by RAI under the provisions of a state mandate as a part of general public broadcasting service. Nevertheless a list of mandatory MW stations is not available. (Italradio report on AWR Wavescan 20 Jan via Febr Communication magazine, British DXC-UK, Jan 30) ITALY 999 UPCOMING CLOSURES RAI 1 MEDIUM WAVES - automatic translation ... The question is, how do you feel in your part of Rai Radio 1 on FM band? In other words, the RAI is at least preserving the listening or is doing a lossy? RAI in FM arrives in Forli always very well: the local repeater, Bertinoro / Monte May, is on top of a beautiful hill as ideal for covering large part of this area of the Romagna plain. [...] The station in Rimini on medium wave 999 kHz is located in an area far from significant urban areas and I've never heard of disputes related to the harmfulness of its electromagnetic field. The option to turn it off is therefore linked to economic evaluations and company policy not to real or perceived health risks. On the opportunities and choices of foresight unfortunately Rai we can only argue with one another, but the fact of paying a fee not still gives us authority to express an opinion directly. as for the Ministry, if it is authorized at random stations Time and Frequency pseudo-sample internationally distributed there problem, but the use of semi-abandoned for medium wave services local coverage or semilocale matter is evil. This historic station which started at Ekala with the wartime South East Asia Command Radio SEAC is now on its last legs. Out of the 3x VOA 35 kW transmitters only 2 are working, the NHK transmitters are both still in good conditions but for spares and they are too expensive to repair and run. The old 10 kW Philips txers are almost gone. The old Marconi 100 kW from Radio SEAC is rusty and with cobwebs and is gone for ever. The final nail its its cofin came when DW packed up from Trincomalee handing over the station to SLBC in Jan 2012. Trincomalee is a fine station and the MW transmitter is also capable of DRM and they did run DRM mode at 1700-1800 UT for DW for a while. The 4x SW transmitters at Trincomalee need to run at least 45 hours to make it

viable to use the hige Diesel Generators which need about a $1000 a day to run and maintain. Ekala is on prime land close to the city and its quote logical to close it down taking the state of the station. So If you want a QSL from SLBC Ekala you will have to do so before the 1st of April as plans are afoot to close down Ekala if the Trinco station gets the power from the National Grid as planned before the end of the B12 season. During the 30 year war with the Tamil Tigers it was not possible to take the national grid power lines as this area was in the front lines. DW had tacit agreements therun without interference from the LTTE. But now the North and East which have been freed are making rapid progress and electricty is reaching most parts. Victor Goonetilleke wrote: If you want a QSL from SLBC Ekala you will have to do so before the 1st of April as plans are afoot to close down Ekala if the Trinco station gets the power from the National Grid as planned before the end of the B12 season. So while the going is good do it. Trinco will run at 125 kW replacing the Ekala service. The 0930-1215 UT service to Kerala will move the MW 1125 kHz instead of SW from Ekala. Trincomalee now runs on Diesel generators which are very expensive to run unless the station is at full capacity. Thus the move to get power from the local grid. Ekala Sked as of now: 0012-0330 7190 (10 kW) / 11905 (35 kW) Hindi to Asia, En nx at 0215 0930-1215 6005 (10 kW) / 11905 (35 kW) Vernaculars to South India. 0125-0300 (Sun 0500) 6005 (10 kW) / 9770 (10 kW) / 15745 (35 kW) kHz English to Asia. All above from Ekala. I will get you your QSLs like I have in the past 10 months or so. The SLBC's above services will move to Trincomalee in A13 and the relays from Trincomalee for other clients will continue. (Victor Goonetilleke-CLN 4S7VK, DXplorer Febr 11) SLBC. So, Victor, what is the best way to get a QSL from the SLBC? I have been trying for well over five years now, and despite the costs of airmail and return postage and dozens of emails, I have yet to receive a response. Are you aware of any tips or hints one can use? (Al Muick-PA-USA, dxld Febr 12) If you had problems with SLBC, please e-mail your report to me and I will get the QSL for you. Such a pity that you have had problems. (Victor Goonetilleke-CLN 4S7VK, dxld Febr 12) re SLBC QSL. Adrian Peterson still QSLs for relays of AWR programs via SLBC Trincomalee site and I consider them very valid as he knows what went out and that it went out as they pay for the airtime. As for SLBC QSLs, they have enough cards on hand and they assure me they will respond. I visit them once a month and get QSLs for those friends who have sent me reports to solicit my help as a fellow dxer. But they are not pleading for reports or waiting to QSL. So good luck with reports if you dare! You don't need to send any IRCs or $ so don't send any and moan and

find fault if they don't reply as they might not get reports in some instances. Even to the big stations QSLing was not a 100% sure thing. I think that even enhansed the joy of getting that card! (Victor Goonetilleke-CLN 4S7VK, dxld Febr 14) Re: SLBC. If I'm not mistaken, Ekala has some of the oldest SW transmitters still in operation anywhere. I recall one DXer in DXLD a few years ago saying that one of the units had gone on the air in 1941. Does anyone have specifics? (Steve Luce-TX-USA, dxld Debr 12) Steve, that was the Marconi transmitter that came into Service in 1948, 100 kW. Sadly although the TX is still there, it is not in operation. TIBET [non]. 7414 kHz, Febr 14 at 1259 UT, I finally tune in for the beginning of the V. of Tibet service in Chinese which I have heard several days until off around 1330* UT, either on 7414 or 7413 kHz. Today it's just a rumbling blob at first, then some tones, and 1300 UT starts some music and talk, but the modulation is underneath the rumble today, and with BFO, one can tell the carrier is very unstable, wobbling. Most of these VOT off-frequency transmissions have been attributed to TAJIKISTAN on various 7 and 15 MHz frequencies, but I wonder if this is elsewhence? Does Yangi-Yul really employ a transmitter in such poor condition? Maybe it's just a bonus for their other business, no complaints, please. Aoki finally includes it in today's update as Tajikistan: 7413*VOICE OF TIBET 1300-1330 daily Chinese 100kw 95deg Dushanbe Yangiyul TJK VOTibet b12 After 1330 UT I look for a similar blob in the 7500-7600 range, since as of Febr 13, Hiroshi via S. Hasegawa reported the VOT Chinese service, after 7413 kHz until 1330 UT, was on 7548 kHz at 1330-1341 UT, and 7558 kHz at 1341-1430 UT but nothing like that heard here today. Strangely enough, Ivo Ivanov in Bulgaria could *not* hear 7414/7413 kHz today and thought it was off; Wolfgang Bueschel with a remote receiver in Sweden *did* hear VOT as Tajikistan on 7558 kHz at 1342-1400 UT, "Accompanied by China mainland Firedrake music and ship horn tone on 7560 kHz. Poor level of Firedrake here in Europe". He doesn't mention anything wrong with that VOT transmission, so despite seeming cooerdination in times, and also due to the disparity in which frequencies are heard where, I continue to suspect the 7414/7413 kHz blobby broadcast is from somewhere else. [later] 7414 kHz on Febr 15 at 1326 UT, V. of Tibet again on offfrequency with Chinese talk under hum/roar from defective transmitter; stops at 1330 UT, brief tone and off at 1330:15* UT. Since the hum/roar always goes off at the same instant as the variable closing of this transmitter, it`s clearly not jamming. Right now at 2355 UT, if you tune in, you will be treated to an Ebonics version of the good book. My sides ache. Haven't laughed this hard in awhile. USA New very strange frequency of WINB in English was observed Febr 10: 2200-0400 NF 9273 INB 050 kW 242 deg to CeAM, ex9265 kHz. Fair signal 34333. (DX MIX News, Ivo Ivanov-BUL, via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Febr 11) Since WINB appeared on strange new 9273v kHz the past two evenings, but with a steady carrier, I want to catch their QSY time circa 2200 UT Febr 11 from 13570 kHz. At 2156 UT closing 'Guidelines' which strangely enough is a Spanish program, and the 13570 carrier is as usual wobbly. 2158 UT quick ID and QSY to 9265 kHz announcement by M&W, off at 2158:43* UT. I was already monitoring 9273 on another receiver in case it is a second transmitter, as it has not been wobbly, and could be turned on before the other one goes off, proving my suspicion but not today. In fact, WINB does QSY to 9265 kHz from *2159:30 UT, and it's obviously the same unit as on 13570 kHz, with the wobble. UT Febr 12 at 0053 UT check, it's still on 9265 kHz rather than 9273 kHz. Will that ever show up again? (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Febr 11) WINB 9265 seemingly totally OFF, nothing! noted anymore lately on various trace checks. (wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Febr 12) Re USA 9272.9 on Febr 11 at 0054 UT, WINB is back on this off-frequency like last night, meanwhile having reverted to 9265 kHz in the morning. This carrier remains stable, unlike the wobbly ones when on 9265 and 13570 kHz. So another transmitter? 9265 Febr 13 at *2200.3 UT, WINB cuts wobble on here after QSY from 13570 kHz which was already off when I turned on at 2158 UT. In the meantime I thought I heard a brief carrier on 9273 kHz, but maybe a spoiler from something else.
