Maternal Health Training Project Mongolia- Applicants

Maternal Health Training Project - Mongolia Ulaanbaatar is the coldest capital city in the world, has the second highest pollution levels and is ranked high on the corruption index. These factors and their effects on nutrition, education and access to healthcare, contribute to health problems in pregnancy and in birth with some serious implications for maternal and infant health. The Maternal Health Training Project (MHTP) is an initiative engineered by Andy Mayer, a childbirth educator currently living in Ulaanbaatar. Andy realised the importance of introducing Maternal Health Training in Mongolia, after holding a private childbirth education class with a Mongolian client in April 2012 It concerned Andy that the client had little understanding of labour, birth or pregnancy health and reported poor levels of care for her first two births. Andy was privileged to attend the third birth as her clients birth partner. The experience motivated her to implement training so that all women have access to Childbirth Education Classes. The First Maternity Hospital in Ulaanbaatar was open to Childbirth Education Classes for their patients as well as training for their staff. The hospital agreed that recommendations and information about diet, danger signs in pregnancy, breastfeeding, care of the newborn, maternal self care activities, breathing for birth and labour progression would be of importance to their patients. A channel was opened to Rotary International, in particular Mr Gary Dennison, who has a passion for Mongolia after working there a few years ago. Rotary pledged to support maternal health in developing countries, especially with regards to training. Currently there are no childbirth education classes available in any Mongolian hospitals. With this in mind, the Maternal Health Training Project Mongolia, is going to equip hospital staff with skills necessary to effectively deliver messages related to health for pre peri and postnatal care. A 5-day training course will be held in Ulaanbaatar. Additionally, 3-day training courses will be implemented in three cities in the Gobi Aimag, a state in the South of the country which is desperately poor with large mining groups attracting workers. Project Goal To provide regional midwives and nurses with skills to teach childbirth education classes To provide co-trainers by equipping midwives, nurses and newly graduated doctors with teaching skills as well as training in childbirth education techniques To create Mongolian-specific training resources, using existing childbirth education resources from Australia, United Kingdom, United States of America and New Zealand The project is a work-in-progress adapting to the needs of the people at basic levels. Andy Mayer is a non-medical staff member skilled in childbirth education principles. The remote
