Cops in the dock

The world reeled this week after shocking video footage emerged showing a group of police officers tying a taxi driver to a vehicle and dragging him through the streets of Daveyton. This isnt the rst time that South African police have been accused of brutality. Here are other notorious cases:

ANDRIES TATANE April 13 2011 Andries Tatane was assaulted and shot dead by police during service delivery protests in Ficksburg, Free State. Two police officers were charged with murder and six with assault to do grievous bodily harm. Charges were withdrawn against one. The remaining seven are on trial in the Ficksburg Regional Court and appear in court tomorrow

SIPHO MBATHA February 14 2012 In December, student constable Sipho Mbatha was jailed for 17 years for the murder of 16-yearold school pupil Thato Mokoa outside his grandmothers Braamscherville, Soweto home, during a police raid. Judge Kathy Satchwell found Mbatha had shot Mokoka with an R5 rie when the youngster was not a threat to him. Mbatha had been part of a group of officers from the Dobsonville Police Station acting on a tip-off that Thato was in possession of an illegal rearm. Witnesses testied he was assaulted by police before being killed

CATO MANOR CRIME UNIT Throughout 2012 The units overall commander, KwaZulu-Natal Hawks boss General Johan Booysen, and 28 of its members two of whom have died of natural causes were arrested last year following claims in the Sunday Times they were running a hit squad operation. They have been suspended and charged with more than 70 criminal counts, including racketeering, robbery, rearms charges and 28 murders. They appear in the Durban High Court again on May 9 Booysen

TAYLORS HALT MURDER July 7 2012 A 31-year-old policewoman, constable Hlengiwe Mkhize of Vulindlela outside Pietermaritzburg, based at Taylors Halt outside the city, was arrested last August for shooting and killing Mlindeli Ngcobo (15), who was a passenger in a car that bumped the officers vehicle. Both parties had agreed to report the incident, but Mkhize then red two shots into the car and killed the teenager. Mkhize opened an attempted hijacking charge after the killing and claimed she had shot in self-defence, but the judge found this unlikely, adding Mkhize had red recklessly and in anger. She will appear in court for sentencing on April 17

MARIKANA MASSACRE August 16 2012 Thirty-four miners were gunned down by police at Lonmins Marikana platinum mine during an illegal strike. The killings are currently the subject of a commission of inquiry appointed by President Jacob Zuma. The families of the dead miners this week gave police notice of their intention to claim compensation for loss of support and other damages
