Dear Illinois lawmakers: Marriage is the lifelong, faithful union of one man and one woman, and the natural basis of the family. Marriage is an institution fundamental to the well-being of society because a stable, loving marriage is the ideal environment for raising children. Through marriage, children grow up knowing that they were created through an act of intimate love. Marriage is also beneficial for adults as the ideal structure for men and women to live interdependently, recognizing the equal dignity, beauty and value of one another while also relying on each others care and love. This is the natural order embracing the complementary physical, emotional and spiritual design of men and women. As such, marriage in its true definition has long been respected and publicly supported in our society. As religious leaders in Illinois, we find the continued affirmation of marriage between a man and a woman essential. The ongoing attempts to alter the definition of marriage in civil law are full of serious danger, primarily by degrading the cultural understanding of marriage to an emotional bond between any two adults and by giving rise to a profound interference with the exercise of religious freedom for those persons and religious institutions whose faith and doctrine recognize the spiritual foundation of marriage as an authorized union between a man and a woman. Some claim that as long as religious ministers are not forced to preside over same-sex marriages the principle of religious freedom, as secured in the U.S. Constitutions First Amendment is protected. However, the notion that the exercise of religious freedom is confined to the interior of churches, synagogues, temples or mosques or what one does on Holy Days is wrong and dangerous. The freedom of religion also extends to the ministries of religious organizations and to the individual conscience. Thus, the real peril: if marriage is redefined in civil law, individuals and religious organizations regardless of deeply held beliefs will be compelled to treat same-sex unions as the equivalent of marriage in their lives, ministries and operations. Compulsion of this nature is a violation of personal conscience and of religious liberty. We implore all people of good will to protect marriage and religious freedom. The far-reaching consequences of redefining marriage in civil law extend throughout society and will directly impact religious freedom. Marriage and religious freedom are ideals integral to Illinois, and our elected leaders should do all they can to maintain these important principles. Sincerely, Most Reverend Edward K. Braxton, Most Reverend R. Did you pay attention to the recent Sunday reading when the Lord said Whom shall I send? Can we respond as Isaiah did? Here I am, I said; send me! Is 5:8 The Glen Ellyn vigil has gotten off to a slow start and we need help to fill the hours during the Spring campaign for 40 Days for Life at the Glen Ellyn Aanchor Abortion Clinic, 1186 Roosevelt Road, Glen Ellyn. The vigil began on Ash Wednesday, February 13th, and will run through March 24th, 2013, every day from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. We are very grateful that seven faith communities have aleady signed up to fill three hour time slots each week. You can go on the website www.40DaysforLife.com/GlenEllyn and sign yourself up. If you want to check on the vigil calendar before committing you can click on Vigil Schedule and then view it as "read only." You'll see that red means no one has signed up, yellow is one person and green is two or more. An orange block means that a church has reserved that time. Just move your cursor over it to find the name of the church and sign up with them if you wish by clicking on Amara and send her an email. Give your name, email address, phone number, date(s) and time(s) you wish to sign up for. If you choose a red time slot, maybe you could bring a friend along so you won't be alone. We really want to get that red off the calendar! Au r o r a n e e d s h e l p a s w e l l www.40DaysforLife.com/Aurora. The purpose of the 40 Days for Life campaign is prayer and fasting, public witness, and community outreach. If you cant actually be present to pray and witness at the clinic, please pray and fast for an end to abortion in your own home or church. Lives are being changed, clinics are closing. This is a ministry that bears good fruit. Sign up for daily emails at www.40DaysforLife.com and share in the good news. MENS DISCERNMENT GROUP We use the book To Save A Thousand Souls by Fr. Sin is before all else an offense against God, a rupture of communion with him. At the same time it damages communion with the Church. For this reason conversion entails both Gods forgiveness and reconciliation with the Church, which are expressed and accomplished liturgically by the sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. (CCC, n. 1440)

A Stewardship Moment
In todays second reading we learn that one of Saint Pauls principles of Christian living is to watch and imitate other followers of Christ. There is a pattern for Christian living that Saint Paul wants others to discover and then imitate. This pattern includes a life of prayer, selflessness, sacrifice, and caring for others, including our family of faith. Good stewards choose their friends wisely. They cultivate friendships with other Christian stewards, spend time with them, observe how they live, ask questions about their faith and learn from them. Who are your friends? Are they good stewards of their faith? Are they those who can help you on your own journey of faith?
During this Lenten season, many of us choose to make sacrifices and do penance in preparation for Easter. The underlying reason for these sacrifices is to be attentive to the work of God in our lives. Stewardship of Time, Talent and Treasure calls us to keep in mind the Lord's admonition to love him with our whole heart, mind, and soul, and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves.
