TOGETHER IN MISSION
ANNUAL APPEAL ‘09
We need the help of every parishioner
to reach our parish goal and to help
our fellow Catholics in need.
$29,425
Parish goal
Once again, Cardinal Mahony is asking all the parishes of
the Archdiocese to contribute to the annual appeal known as
TOGETHER IN MISSION.
The purpose of TOGETHER IN MISSION is to raise funds
to help the most needy parishes and schools in the Archdio-
cese. Every parish is asked to raise 10 % of its offertory in-
come (i.e., donations received through the Sunday collection
as well as from baptisms, marriages and other sacraments).
This year’s goal for Holy Innocents is $29,425. This is about
the same as last year’s goal which, thanks to our generous
parishioners, we were able to meet.
Registered parishioners will have already received or will
soon receive an appeal letter from Cardinal Mahony himself.
Today, Commitment Sunday, we will be asking our parish-
ioners to make a pledge. If everyone does his or her part, we
should be able to reach our parish goal of $29,425.

FASTING EXPRESSES OUR
HUNGER AND THRIST FOR GOD
I n our own day, fast-
ing seems to have
lost something of its
spiritual meaning, and
has taken on, in a cul-
ture characterized by the
search for material well-being, a therapeutic value
for the care of one's body. Fasting certainly bring
benefits to physical well-being, but for believers,
it is, in the first place, a "therapy" to heal all that
prevents them from conformity to the will of
God. In the Apostolic Constitution Pænitemini of
1966, the Servant of God Paul VI saw the need to
present fasting within the call of every Christian
to "no longer live for himself, but for Him who
loves him and gave himself for him, he will also
have to live for his brethren" (cf. Ch. I). Lent
could be a propitious time to present again the
norms contained in the Apostolic Constitution, so
that the authentic and perennial significance of
this long held practice may be rediscovered, and
thus assist us to mortify our egoism and open our
heart to love of God and neighbor, the first and
greatest Commandment of the new Law and com-
pendium of the entire Gospel (cf. Mt 22, 34-40).
The faithful practice of fasting contributes,
moreover, to conferring unity to the whole per-
son, body and soul, helping to avoid sin and grow
in intimacy with the Lord. Saint Augustine, who
knew all too well his own negative impulses, de-
fining them as "twisted and tangled knotti-
ness" (Confessions, II, 10.18), writes: "I will cer-
tainly impose privation, but it is so that he will
forgive me, to be pleasing in his eyes, that I
may enjoy his delightfulness" (Sermo 400, 3, 3:
PL 40, 708). Denying material food, which nour-
ishes our body, nurtures an interior disposition to
listen to Christ and be fed by His saving word.
Through fasting and praying, we allow Him to
come and satisfy the deepest hunger that we ex-
perience in the depths of our being: the hunger
and thirst for God.

ESTACIONES DEL VÍA
CRUCIS CADA VIERNES
Las Estaciones del Vía crucis se rezará
solemnemente cada viernes después de la
Misa de 6:30pm en el templo de los
Santos Inocentes.
También se rezará el Vía crucis en frente
del Centro de Abortos en el 2777 Long
Beach Blvd. a las 7:30pm.
AYUNO Y ABSTENCIA CUARESMALES
ABSTENERSE DE COMER
CARNE (“carne” incluye pollo) es
obligatorio el Miércoles de Ceniza y
todos los Viernes de Cuaresma (los
que tienen de 14 años en adelante
están obligados por esta ley).
AYUNAR es obligatorio el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes
Santo para los de 18 años de edad en adelante y hasta los 59.
Al ayunar se pueden tomar dos comidas del día, suficientes
para conservar el vigor; pero esas dos sumadas no pueden
equivaler a una comida completa. No es permitido comer entre
comidas ese día de ayuno, pero sí se pueden tomar líquidos.
Nota: Los enfermos, mujeres embarazadas y los ancianos
están exentos de estas leyes de la Iglesia sobre ayuno y
abstinencia.

CAMPAÑA ‘09
Necesitamos el compromiso de cada feligrés
para que podamos alcanzar nuestra meta y así
ayudar a nuestros hermanos Católicos más
necesitados de la Arquidiócesis.

BAUTIZOS DE INFANTES, GRATIS
Bautizamos los infantes y niños pequeños los sábados en
español.
Y con el fin de motivar a los padres
católicos a bautizar a sus hijos cuanto
antes después del nacimiento, no se
pedirá ningún donativo para los bebés
que tienen sólo un mes o menos.
Los padres tienen obligación de hacer
que los hijos sean bautizados en las
primeras semanas; lo más pronto
después del nacimiento … Canon 867.1

Llame a la notaría parroquial para fijar la fecha hoy.
NO TODAS LAS ‘IGLESIAS
CATÓLICAS’ LO SON
Puede ser que el templo se mira como un
templo Católico o que tienen allí una
imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe o de
otros Santos Católicos. También puede ser
que el llamado ‘Padre’ se viste como
sacerdote y que allí dan ‘Misas’. Nada de
esto garantiza que son Católicos
verdaderos en comunión con el Papa
Benedicto.
Tristemente, hay un numero creciente
de sectas nuevas que rechazan la autoridad del Papa y las demás
doctrinas Católicas pero al mismo tiempo dan la impresión a la
gente no instruida que ellos si son Católicos. Lo hacen porque
son ‘negocios’ y se aprovechan de la gente crédula. Los señores
encargados de aquellas sectas, aunque se visten de ‘Padres,’ no
están interesados en la salvación del alma.
¡Cuidado con aquellas sectas! Y anote bien: un Católico debe
asistir a Misa y recibir los Sacramentos solamente en una
parroquia ‘registrada’ con la Iglesia Católica, Apostólica y
Romana. Si no, los llamados ‘Sacramentos’ recibidos no son
lícitos en los ojos de la Iglesia Católica, Apostólica y Romana.
Si usted tiene una duda sobre una Iglesia específica, llame a la
notaría parroquial. Tenemos en la oficina un directorio de todas
las parroquias que están en comunión con el Papa y con el
Cardenal Mahony.

devotion which is highly recom-
mended by saints and holy popes.

FAST & ABSTINENCE DURING LENT

Abstaining from meat (“meat”
includes poultry) is obligatory on
Ash Wednesday and all Fridays
of Lent (those who are 14 yrs or
older are bound by this law).
Fasting is obligatory on Ash Wednesday & Good
Friday for anyone who is at least 18 yrs and not yet
59. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength,
may be taken; but together they should not equal an-
other full meal. Eating between meals on these days is
not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Obviously, the
sick, pregnant women and the elderly are exempt from
these regulations.
