YMs Resolution
This Union recognizes there is more work to do, to assist our comrades within our equality
Over 50 young members from around the UK, along with international Young Member guests from Norway and the USA attended. On the agenda was a Morden and Oval branch resolution. Many spoke passionately, in favour of the resolution, with questions on what union officials do daily. It was agreed that the resolution was a step in the right direction to getting more involvement in the union, as well as recognition that there must be more investment in Young Members. We look forward to a Council of Executives decision that allows shadowing the likes of our General Secretary Bob Crow, Assistant General Secretary, President, Executive members and Regional Organisers. The RMT is the fastest growing union in Britain for a reason. We run many educational courses throughout the year, with the next being the Young Members Annual General meeting course, which runs alongside the unions AGM in Brighton 22-28 June. It starts with the General Secretarys football match which always sees a good turnout by Young Members. The course centers on providing knowledge of the unions structure and interpreting the different slang that is bandied about. It also provides opportunities to meet other Young Members, who are determined to see improvements in the workplace and the union.

REAL DANGER
A well-known practice the bosses use is to act like they are our friends. Usually, its not a problem. Indeed, LUL are meant to operate an open door policy that allows staff to visit them whenever they have a problem. However, its been known for bosses to bypass many of our agreements, by using this so-called friendship, to avoid TU reps being present at meetings. They assure staff that the meetings are informal, when really it is much more sinister. It only becomes apparent when annual leave is constantly denied or unwarranted disciplinary action is taken, often being too late for us to intervene. Four times a year, the GSM / TOM meets with Level 1 (Industrial Relations) reps to discuss issues such as attendance, rosters, disciplinary or grievances Managers also meet the Health & Safety reps, four times a year to discuss any Health & Safety concerns on the group or in the depot. These meetings are called Tier 1. If anything urgent happens in-between these meetings, an emergency meeting called Ad-Hoc meeting is arranged to discuss the new items.
