CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM: RATIONALE AND BACKGROUND INTRODUCTION At least no one is hyperventilating yet about it being possibly unsafe, structurally speaking. In pre-tarpaulin days, when billboards were made out of painted galvanized sheets pieced together on wooden and metal frames, people harped about the tendency of such signs to topple over during an earthquake, or for a particularly nasty typhoon to tear the sheets off their frames and have them flying about, ready to scalp some hapless passerby. The tarpaulin billboard was supposed to be relatively free of similar worries. But then in mid-September 2009, the edge of one such sign, located somewhere between the MRT Cubao and Kamuning stations, ripped and went unfixed by the media supplier Big Board, in violation of building code regulations. Three days after, strong winds tore the tarpaulin completely free from its frame and then carried it far enough to get snagged on the power cable of an oncoming train. As it dragged on the line, it caught fire, disrupting MRT operations for eight hours. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but there were many frayed nerves among MRT officials and commuters alike. At the present time, automation is one of the main priority and backbone of most research. The majority of professionals like engineers do automated devices to

lessen the difficulty of some work that has to be done. The application of automation in the billboard display for safety purpose is the main concern of this design projects. The apprehension of creating this study is due to the safety of the workforce that will manually operate the process to safety roll-up the billboard display during typhoon or any calamities through microcontroller with GSM Module interface. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY Specifically it aims to; 1.The study aims to develop a system that would control automatically control the roll-up and down of tarpaulin billboard display with the aid of Microcontroller and GSM Modem. 2.To further explore the possible applications of the Microcontroller and GSM Modem combination. 3.Demonstrate the operations of tarpaulin billboard display system through a prototype model. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Nowadays, billboards play a vital role in advertising information to the public. Improvement of these medium are one of the concerns or considerations of media personnel. Billboards are sensitive especially in times of calamities. A billboard with safety features can be the solution. The researchers aim to answer the following considerations and problems:

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
1.What are things to consider for the automatic safety features of the billboard display be applied? 2.How to automatically control the safety features of the billboard display? 3.What are the factors and/or specifications that have to be considered in choosing a microcontroller that can be used for controlling the safety features of the billboard display? 4.How does the GSM Module operate? 5.How to tie up the tarpaulin on top of the billboard frame when rolled up and the same thing when returned to its original position? 6.How will the additional feature, the lightning system, be operated automatically? 7.How to secure the overall device from possible damages?

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK The intent of this project is to create a tarpaulin billboard that would automatically roll-up once the GSM Module received a confirmation from the personin-charge to avoid calamities that can lead to the ridding of the billboard display which is a tarpaulin. The main function of the power supply is to provide a sustainable power for the electricity dependent devices like GSM Module, microcontroller and motor. Once a confirmation is sent to automatically roll the tarpaulin up, the switch will be trigger and this cause the microcontroller to generate the motor that will execute the process of rolling up the billboard display. As a result, it will lessen or avoid the

possibility of falling down or tearing off the tarpaulin. And in addition, the lamp is now set automatically to provide supplementary protection anytime needed.

FIGURE 1: BLOCK DESCRIPTION Power Supply It is a device that supplies electrical energy to microcontroller and other devices that are electrically dependent which is necessary for the design project. The term is most commonly applied to devices that convert one form of electrical energy to another, though it may also refer to devices that convert another form of energy (e.g., mechanical, chemical, solar) to electrical energy. GSM Modem Global System for Mobile Communications: originally from Groupe Spcial Mobile. It is a multi-functional, ready to use, rugged unit that can be embedded or plugged into any application. various levels by using the standards AT commands. The modem comprises several interfaces: LED Function including operating status External Antenna Serial and Control Link Power supply SIM Card Holder Switch Is an electrical component that can break an electrical circuit, interrupting the current or diverting it from one conductor to another. The most familiar form of switch is a manually operated electromechanical device with one or more sets of electrical contacts. Each set of contacts can be in one of two states: either 'closed' meaning the contacts are touching and electricity can flow between them, or 'open', meaning the contacts are separated and nonconducting. Microcontroller Sometimes abbreviated C, uC or MCU, is a small computer on a single integrated circuit containing a processor core, memory, and programmable input/output peripherals. Microcontrollers are used in automatically controlled products and devices, such as automobile engine control systems, implantable medical devices, remote controls, office machines, appliances, power tools, and toys.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS The design is tight with the following statements: The study will focused on controlling the safety features of the billboard display using microcontroller with GSM Modem interface. A Zilog Microcontroller will be used. It will be operated automatically once the GSM Module received SMS verification from the administrator. A _____ will be used for the tarpaulin locking once rolled up or down to its normal state. It is utilize to avoid the unnecessary dilemma like breaking it apart or tearing it into pieces due to any calamities. The project could be implemented in public places, most often, they are located on main roads and they can be placed in any location with large number of viewers. A reply default is set to confirm if the action is executed or if failure in the process occurred. The design is limited with the following statements: There must be administrator who will know when to send confirmation for the automatic activity of the device. A reply default will be set although it doesnt have automatic loading for itself. If the network location is busy or unable to cover a signal the system cannot be operated automatically.

ASSUMPTIONS This design is subjected on the following hypothesis: The design was confined only in the study of existing system and looking for the better alternatives for the proposed system. Since the design intent to further enhance the existing system of billboard display for the reasons of providing a more liable and enhanced system, the recent set up of the billboard structure, the cost and the safety of the environments is the primary concerns. These serve as the basis of the project design proposal. The association of the common billboard display is usually manual operated and very hazardous and hence improvement and upgrading is the main importance. The existing billboard display system needs to be improved and enhanced for much better advertising All devices are assumed to be in good condition for the smooth flow of the system. Rolling up or down is the way the tarpaulin will be held up or when back to its normal position. Once a confirmation SMS is sent to the GSM Module a reply message will be sent back to the sender for verification if the action was executed or if some failure occurred during the process. The Zilog Microcontroller has an estimated lifespan of ____. If stoppage and malfunction occur like sudden power supply loss, a confirmation text will be sent to the server.

DEFINITION OF TERMS The following terms were defined according to how they are used in the design project to avoid misconceptions. Zilog Microcontroller Stands for "Z (the last word of) integrated logic", is a manufacturer of 8-bit and 24-bit microcontrollers, and is most famous for its Intel 8080-compatible Z80 series. GSM for Industrial Applications. The primary appeal of the GSM network for industrial applications is in its following qualities: Digital Transmission. The GSM Network is inherently digital which makes it secure, relatively error-free, and jamming-proof. Nationwide Coverage. The GSM networks offer nationwide access at a fixed fee regardless of location. Future-proof. The GSM network is designed to be compatible with future technology upgrades such as GPRS and third generation (3G) cellular telephony. Thus, investments in this area are relatively safe in the medium to long term. Cheap. GSM technology in terms of hardware and fees paid to providers will get cheaper as it grows more popular and as the technology matures. Mobile. GSM technology allows for a roaming system, wherein both transmitter and receiver can be move around the cellular network.

Data Transmission. This can be in the form of: telemetry systems, remote access and control systems, remote display systems and others. Being inherently digital, sending digital data with the GSM network is very simple and easy. Information transmission through the GSM network can be in the form of: Voice Channel Transmission. Much like how a regular fixed line modem works, data can be transmitted to the cell phones voice channel at speeds comparable to a fixed line modem. GPRS Transmission. The 2.5 G GPRS technology that is slowly gaining popularity in the Philippines allows for high-speed data transmission for the newest cell phone models. SMS Transmission. Using a 160-character text message, short commands can be sent via SMS and decoded by a receiver. This is ideal for intermittent small packet data transmission.

12

Low Speed/High Torque DC Motor Transmit a large amount of power from a comparatively small drive envelope. Low noise and vibration and high energy efficiency can be additional benefits. Rapid reversal of direction may be achieved simply by reversing the direction of hydraulic fluid flow. LSHT motors also exhibit smooth starting torque. Relay Use an electromagnetic coil to move the poles of the switch when powered. There are three pairs of connection know as common, normally open and normally

close. The center terminal block is the common (CO) connection and is connected to either upper or lower terminal block depending on the state of the relay. And its vital role is to switch on/off the device according to the microcontroller command. Tarpaulin Tarp in American English, is a large sheet of strong, flexible, waterresistant or waterproof material, often cloth such as canvas or polyester coated with urethane, or made of plastics such as polyethylene. In some places such as Australia, and in military slang, a tarp may be known as a hootch. Tarpaulins often have reinforced grommets at the corners and along the sides to form attachment points for rope, allowing them to be tied down or suspended. Inexpensive modern tarpaulins are made from woven polypropylene; this material is so associated with tarpaulins that it has become colloquially known in some quarters as polytarp. Mobile phone and SIM Card Also called mobile, cellular telephone, cell phone, hand phone or handy, is an electronic device used for full duplex two-way radio telecommunications over a cellular network of base stations known as cell sites. Allows its user to make and receive telephone calls to and from the public telephone network which includes other mobiles and fixed-line phones across the world. It does this by connecting to a cellular network owned by a mobile network operator. SIM Card or Subscriber Identity Module is a portable memory chip used in some models of cellular telephones. It makes it easy to switch to a new phone by simply sliding the SIM out

of the old phone and into the new one. It holds personal identity information, cell phone number, phone book, text messages and other data. Calamities Calamity is the effect of natural hazard which causes environmental, financial or human losses. Earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions, landslides, fires, spontaneous tree limbs falling, winds, hurricanes, tornadoes, ice storms. Natural calamities are occurrences, events or phenomenon that happens in nature of their own according or because of man (the use of cell towers, vehicles also cause damage to air). Assembly Language A low-level programming language for computers, microprocessors, microcontrollers, and other integrated circuits. It implements a symbolic representation of the binary machine codes and other constants needed to program a given CPU architecture. This representation is usually defined by the hardware manufacturer, and is based on mnemonics that symbolize processing steps (instructions), processor registers, memory locations, and other language features. An assembly language is thus specific to certain physical (or virtual) computer architecture. This is in contrast to most high-level programming languages, which, ideally, are portable.

User can control multiple electrical devices by sending suitably formatted SMS message to the microcontroller based control system. These SMS commands are interpreted by microcontroller system and are validated. If the SMS command received is valid then it takes the necessary action to control the said devices. This system also continuously monitors the status of devices connected to it. If the status of any critical device changes from ON to OFF or vice versa, then microcontroller based system automatically sends the SMS alerts back to user. After completion of the command implementation this system sends the confirmation messages back to the calling user. Branded Outdoor Billboard help Pedestrians to Safety By: Lexy Klain Category: Digital Influence

An Indian mobile service provider, Aircel, recently did some very clever and whacky guerilla advertising in Mumbai, India. The company created and erected a giant outdoor billboard that had a branded boat vessel on it with the tagline: In case of emergency, cut rope. Why is this so clever? Mumbai is known for its monsoon season this time of year. Would it be likely that a scenario like this pop up where a boat was needed to get people to safety? Well, yes. Not only was this an innovative way to promote Aircel as well as a media-stealing publicity stunt to generate word of mouth for the brand in a high traffic area, but it also received widespread media attention as an actual emergency arose which lead to someone needing to cut the rope and make use out of the vessel. Spring wise reports that on July 15, monsoon floods made the Milan Subway virtually impassable. The rope was cut on Aircels billboard, the boat was released, and stranded pedestrians were ferried to safety.

Bleeding billboards used to remind motorists to drive safely - video By: Hannah Wood, Mirror.co.uk 6/07/2009 A bleeding billboard in New Zealand is being used to remind motorists to drive carefully during the rainy season. The disturbing ad features portraits of children that bleed from the eyebrows, nose, ears and mouth when it rains. The effect is startling and transforms fresh-faces into car crash victims above the strap line: Rain changes everything. Please drive to the conditions. When the sun shines they return to normal. The billboard may be terrifying but Paparuka District Council claims that since they went up over Easter traditionally the worst time for fatalities because of the holiday rush and first heavy rains after summer nobody has died. LOCAL LITERATURE Early Billboard Forms Billboards happen to be the world's oldest form of advertising. Signage was the earliest form of marketing communications, used by the first Egyptian merchants who chiseled sales and promotional messages on stone tablets, later posting them along public roads. Millennia later, improvements in printing led to the evolution from handchiseled stone tablet signs to more aesthetically designed posters, originally called bills, in the 1800s. Billboards were originally extensively used by circuses, whose owners invested heavily in advanced promotions. Many of the circus owners eventually became providers of billboards themselves. In the 20th century, marketers began to use billboards as a major means to establish brand awareness. This was when outdoor advertising centers like Times Square and Hollywood's Sunset Strip came about, with spectacular displays by brand icons like Coke, Kelloggs, Levi's, Wrigley's, etc. Times Square and Sunset Strip reign as the outdoor capitals of the world even today. Advertisers are not only encouraged to construct bigger and brighter displays in these areas but the City Planning Commission mandates it due to its tourism value. In the Philippines, a self-regulatory body, the Outdoor Advertising Association of the Philippines, was established in 1964 to help enforce public

safety consciousness in the construction of outdoor signs and structures among member companies. In more recent years, the billboard's role in creating awareness and purchase intent has been recognized. A number of factors have fueled this growth: 1. Dramatic increases in vehicle ownership and the increasingly mobile lifestyle of individuals. 2. Women migrating from in-home to out-of-home activities. Women as primary buying influencers in the past were easier to reach. This changed as more and more women began to work and marketers had to think of ways to reach them outside their homes. 3. The medium's capability to reach targeted consumers while they travel to their daily destinations. 4. The medium's flexibility to reach specific target markets around their lifestyle -e.g., billboards mounted close to the workplace, homes and neighborhoods, shopping districts, schools, etc. 5. Technological improvements in the production of large format signs today do justice to the product or service features. http://outlookph.blogspot.com/2008/06/billboards-in-philippines.html//Early billboard forms

Billboard Effectiveness A consumer perception study mounted by the Starcom Research in 2000 revealed the following: 1. Size and uniqueness of billboards drive memorability. Likewise, simple, concise messages in smaller billboard formats. 2. People like billboards that entertain. 3. People expect billboards to change every so often, especially for highrecognition brands. 4. The perception that everyone hates out-of-home advertising is unfounded. 5. Transit riders enjoy the entertainment and distraction of billboard messages more than rush hour traffic. An FBCRS survey on usage, attitude and image, conducted in 2003, complemented the Starcom research. The findings revealed: 1. A billboard's unique design is an attribute that drives awareness and recall of advertising. 2. Use of bright, cheerful colors is preferred. 3. People like billboards in general as revealed by 96 percent of the respondents who gave overall positive comments. http://outlookph.blogspot.com/2008/06/billboardsinphilippines.html//BillboardEff ectiveness

Successful Billboard Attributes While billboards are enjoying a surge in media usage, marketers are challenged to present their billboards in ways that rise above the clutter. Some of the attributes that marketers can look into include the following as culled from a 2000 Sensory Logic Creative Test mounted in late 2000: 1. Stopping power. Successful billboards must have excellent stopping power. These include among others, the use of strong color contrasts between foreground and background elements; use of colors with deep saturation; avoidance of cluttered or very austere formats and use of a story line with dramatic tension or suspense to engage viewer interest. 2. Readability. These include making the picture image big, alive and simple; making the message clear; developing copy that is short yet full of punch and creating a seamless design with simple and clear texts and fonts. 3. Message Clarity. Avoiding excessive brain teasing, ability to relate messages to familiar experiences and situations and emphasis on the product as hero or helper are dimensions of message clarity. 4. Memorability. These include the use of a powerful anchor visual element and images that hinge on real-life experiences. Filipino Billboard Mixes Ads with Green Messaging By: SCREENS.tv staff A community in the Philippines is using a digital billboard to promote environmental messages to its 70,000 citizens. Carmona, near Manila, has installed a billboard from Lighthouse Technologies at a tollgate where it can reach high pedestrian and vehicle traffic. The display 4m wide and 3m high shows advertising and environmental messages, dubbed the Green Channel, from 6am to 10pm. Composed of 16 panels in a 4x4 configuration, it has 2000:1 contrast ratio and 5000 candelas per square meter brightness for visibility in the strong sunlight. Icon Advertising provides content and manages the billboard. Local firm Evolution also worked on the deployment. http://www.screens.tv/article/111099/Filipino_billboard_mixes_ads_with_gree n_messaging.html Road Safety Billboard Started Ford's Road Safety Campaign Famous for excellent cars, Ford is committed to its country's road safety as well. Ford Philippines is going to make roads safer for both motorists and pedestrians. Its program in support of the World Health Organization's (WHO) World Health Day on Road Safety was initially introduced in April 2004 (when its road safety billboard was established along the Balibago/Tagaytay road) and went

on in 2005, when two main projects were identified: the Road Safety Fund and Responsibility in Driving Education or R.I.D.E. program. P1.000 for every Ford and Mazda vehicle sold in the Philippines was donated to the road safety fund. Ford Philippines started this campaign in March 2005. Educate drivers and promote road safety in the Philippines (which included a road safety billboard unveiling and educational programs) - this is where the funds were used. The road safety promoting contained not only the road safety billboard establishing, but also different training programs, research and studies on different aspects of road safety and other identified road safety projects. R.I.D.E. is a comprehensive road safety educational program. It was specially designed to educate today's drivers and the drivers of the future. A number of sessions were developed to fit the specific audience: high school and college students, Ford dealerships and customers, Ford clubs and the general public. Such topics as driving accident facts, road signs and common traffic violations, defensive driving, road hazards, driving etiquette and techniques, car conditions and understanding vehicle safety features were included in the R.I.D.E. sessions for students. Customers and employees enjoyed the R.I.D.E sessions that comprised driving accident facts, road signs and common traffic violations, defensive driving techniques, handling emergency situations, vehicle safety technologies and hands-

The Billboard Safety Initiative (BSI), an alliance of five of the country's biggest outdoor advertisers, declared their support for any initiative that would define safety standards of the P2 billion industries. The group, which includes United Neon, Media Pool Inc., Summit Media, Outcome, and Big Board Advertisers, added they are ready to work with legislators to formulate the said policies. BSI spokesperson Oliver San Antonio, however, said they are not part of the Organization of Outdoor Advertisers Associations of the Philippines (OOAAP). He said the BSI is prepared to comply with all government-approved regulations. San Antonio said since the 14th Congress convened last July, Senate Bill 1714, which was filed in the 13th Congress by Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago, has not yet been refilled. He added that not even the incident back in 2006, which involved a billboard along EDSA that was brought down by typhoon Milenyo, has pushed the House of Representatives into refilling a counterpart bill to Santiago's initiative. "What we are practicing now is self-regulation. We want a new Senate or House bill filed, but with certain amendments especially as to size," San Antonio said.

He added the billboards belonging to the group are structurally-sound and are compliant with latest safety standards, and that they have no control over the content of the ads the billboards contain, as stated in current rules. San Antonio said the group has already met with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). "We have complied with the DPWH's three stringent requirements: permits from LGUs (local government units) that examine the technical specifications; insurance on P100,000 per billboard; and the rigid specification, like three to six meters away from a power installation," he said. He added all of the group's structures have been built in accordance with the National Building Code. Meanwhile, in response to criticisms that billboards are safety hazards, San Antonio said pink and concrete fences put up by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) have proven more dangerous after causing accidents on several occasions. He added the MMDA and the DPWH apparently abused their police powers in tearing down billboards, although they have adhered to all law-mandated requirements. http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/05/26/08/outdoor-advertisers-urge-govt-passbillboard-safety-law

Total Ban on Billboards Blogged by Noemi Lardizabal-Dado with 10,283 views In the past two days after Typhoon Milenyo ravaged Metro Manila, I was able to drive around the city and take a few photos of the devastation including fallen billboards (Milenyo toppled at least 30 billboards in the metropolis). When the influx of billboards invaded Metro Manila highways, the sight suffocated me. What an eyesore! I dont know with you but I dont enjoy watching these ads. I guess it was the visual pollution that got to me. Too much visual clutter or clutter surrounding my confines disorients me. I need to see blue skies of the horizon and the landscape as far as my eyesight can see. But no, the billboards loom in front of me taunting me to purchase or be loyal to their products or service. The use of provocative images like Bench Ads, the old Bayantel Satisfaction guarantee ad, and many others infuriated me. Not only are these billboards an eyesore, its a motorist distraction which could lead to accidents and injuries. Three months ago, the work towards the ban on billboard gained media coverage. When I blogged about the ban on billboards, Bayani Fernando initiated the dismantling of these billboards. But some local mayor arrested the MMDA workers and Bayani got smacked with a restraining order to cease and desist the dismantling. Why?

Because these ad agencies have the right to recoup their investments on their gigantic billboards. Or are they protecting the pockets of the local government conspirators? Never in their wildest imagination did the judges consider that these billboards can cause possible deaths and inconvenience to the public. True, business need to be protected but not to the detriment of the public good. Before typhoon Milenyo struck Metro Manila, a few accidents already occurred such as a house crushed under the weight of the towering giant and that time the Metro Rail Transit came to a halt when the billboard landed on its tracks and caused an electrical short. Still there was no action taken by the local government. Afraid of losing revenue? Or money in their pockets? Did it take Typhoon Milenyo to finally make them realize the dangers of these gigantic billboards? With the death of a driver from a killer billboard in EDSA, local government officials are now all for the ban of billboards. What can I say? I told you so says Bayani Fernando as he supervised the cleaning operations. The Billboard (now partially removed) that killed a driver in a van along EDSA, Estrella St in Makati City One of my daughters is leery of the existing trusses that withstood the ravaging wrath of Typhoon Milenyo. Before and After Photos of a Billboard ad in Ortigas Avenue/C5 As of this writing, most of the tarpaulins have not been unfolded for public view. If the ad agencies place these back up, I will only be reminded of the deaths, injuries, property damage, and potential dangers. When I see a billboard ad of say a restaurant, I will view this ad with anger and disdain. In the past, these ad agencies discovered that billboard ad campaign worked to develop brand loyalty and product recall. Let us tell these advertising agencies that their billboard ads will not work for us anymore. Let them find a more effective marketing campaign. Like

provide better services or products should be a start. Or they can choose from dozens of advertising vehicles ranging from flyers to cable television. We, the consumers need to do our share to work towards the ban of billboard ads along congested and major thoroughfares nationwide. Lets not wait for another death or accident to happen. http://aboutmyrecovery.com/2006/10/01/total-ban-on-billboards/ Ban on Billboards Edit- October 2, 2006- Read Total Ban of Billboards in congested areas in the Philippines. It says in the news that FOLLOWING complaints from motorists, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has finally drafted a circular which would ban billboards from being displayed alongside major roads nationwide. Larger-than-life billboards like Bayantel Ad and scantily-clad models in Bench ads are a distraction to motorists. Not only that, these billboards destroys the landscape of Metro Manila. Once approved, it would prohibit the putting up of advertising billboards or signs within a 100-meter radius of the center of national roads as well as transmission lines. It also calls for the removal within six months of existing display boards within the 100-meter radius. Now, I wonder when this will be implemented. http://aboutmyrecovery.com/2006/06/13/ban-on-billboards/

As we all know Agriculture play a significant role in developing country like India and implementing mobile communication for facilitating farmers is the basic idea of our project. Thus with the creeping interests in the wireless and GSM based projects, we came up with this idea of developing a simpler, multipurpose, cost-effective design to control the on-off mechanism of various devices in the field via short message service (SMS). Motor Starter for irrigation in Agricultural Applications encompasses lighting, security, telecommunications, access and safety, information and entertainment systems and thermal comfort systems. Besides self monitoring and regulation the Motor Starter for irrigation in Agricultural Applications system will also give auxiliary control to the user to enable him/her to control any application from a remote place. Such a facility would require a tool that extends

access to Motor Starter for irrigation in Agricultural Applications base station controller from his/her premises to anywhere the user might be. This is done through a mobile device making this system truly global. Commands are sent to Motor Starter for irrigation in Agricultural Applications system through user mobile as data through SMS (Short Service Messages) providing a cost effective, reliable far reaching access to the user. The coded SMS is sent to the Motor Starter for irrigation in Agricultural Applications base station controller that receives the messages, decodes the messages, initiates required automation operations and responds to the successful initiations by a reply to the user. Justification of the Project The project is a clear indication of a multipurpose control done via sms reducing the manual efforts and time required while paying individual attention for controlling each device. For farmers who need to switch on the water motors at night due to water supply problems with most of the Indian villages this system will surely be very helpful and reduces the risk of night visit to the farm, saves time and energy of the individual. The system requires less design and implementation cost. For handicapped people it may be really not entertaining to involve much in manual work and this system helps them to locate themselves in a place and operate the lights of their room, switch on the fan etc Farmers can make use of this system for controlling motor, sprinklers, tanks and also several

educational purposes and control of the appliances in the long range is almost the new area. This paper will describes how to use an AVR microcontroller and Siemens Mobile phone SL45i to design GSM automation board. The designed board can be use not only for the education in university but can be applied to security system, home automation and some practical application in the industrial automation. Hardware Design The CPU of the GSM automation board is the high-performance, 8-bit AVR microcontroller ATmega8515L. It's a microcontroller with RISC architecture, 8k Bytes of in-system self-programmable Flash, 512K Bytes internal SRAM, 512K Bytes EEPROM [Atmel Corp., 2006]. Those chips include a programmable serial USART and ISP interface for In-System Programming. For easy manipulation with board, use the 40-pin PDIP packages. The GSM automation board contains 8 analog inputs, 4 digital inputs and 4 digital opto-isolator outputs for control of AC appliances. As mentioned earlier, the microcontroller Atmega8515L supports ISP. One 10-pin ISP connector is built in the board (compatible with programmer Kanda STK 200 /300 standards) and has six signals to implement: MISO, MOSI, RST, SCK, VCC and GND (Figure 1). The CPU can be programmed directly in board. The port P0 and P2 are pulled high externally through the pull--up resistors. Pins XLAL1 and XTAL2 are connected to the 4MHz crystal. The 8-bit

A/D converter ADC0809 is connected to port P0 and controlled by pins AD_Start and OE. Pins AD_A0, AD_A1 and AD_A2 are used for select of the A/D channels [Tong, V.O., (2005)]. AT Command and PDU Format AT Command. Remote control operation of the GSM automation board runs via a serial interface by the specific AT commands. All of the commands begin with the string "AT" and end with "" (Hexadecimal: 0x0D). The input of a command is acknowledged by the display of "OK" or "ERROR" [Pettersson, L., (2005)]. The next command cannot entry until we have received the acknowledgment. Some of the frequently used AT commands for control GSM automation board are as follows: PDU Format. The PDU (Protocol Description Unit) mode is the one of two methods to send and receive SMS messages. In our case, every string of SMS have to compress before sending and every received SMS have to decompress in 7--bit SMS messages using a special PDU format. The details of PDU format can be found in the application note [Atmel AVR App. Note No. 323, (2006)]. Functions of Embedded Software The source program was written in C language and compiled with AVR Code Vision C compiler. It is an IDE for AVR chips having built-in software for

STK200 compatible programmer. The embedded software has to ensure the following functions: Periodical scanning of the digital inputs and reading of the values from analog inputs (temperature from LM35D). Testing, if the analog values run over the limit or digital inputs change from high to low (PIR sensor and magnetic contactors are active), it will dial and send SMS to other user--defined mobile phone. Decode received SMS from user--defined mobile phone number and according to that, it will switch ON/OFF electrical appliances (230V AC ventilator). Display the current temperature from sensor LM35D and status of four digital outputs in LCD. Practical Applications The designed GSM automation board can be used in home automation with remote control and monitoring via GSM communication. With GSM automation board, it is possible to monitor 12 inputs and activate 4 outputs. Besides monitoring a temperature, GSM board can activate an AC ventilator, switch ON/OFF lights, and open an electric gate through SMS. The GSM automation board can be applied in security and surveillance applications. Our designed system is enough to monitor moving persons via PIR detectors and door's magnetic contactors and send SMS messages in case of intrusion.

CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Research methodology defines what the activity of research is, how to proceed, how to measure progress, and what constitutes success. It can be a process, or may be expanded to include a philosophically coherent collection of theories, concepts or ideas as they relate to a particular discipline or field of study. It may also refer to more than a simple set of methods or procedures, or to the rationale and the philosophical assumptions that underlie a particular study relative to the scientific method. This section focuses mainly on the research design, which utilizes a descriptive type of study, study locale, in which it concentrate on the usability of the study and lastly is the way the data is collected or the data gathering procedure. RESEARCH DESIGN The researchers used a descriptive research design that is a scientific method, which involves observing and describing the behavior of a subject without influencing it in any way. It is a valid method of for researching specific subject and as a precursor to more quantitative studies to establish essentials information that is found to be necessary to the whole structure of the proposed project. The proposal design project deals with the possibility of much safe structural means of automating the features of billboard display mostly for tarpaulins in a way of using GSM Modem and microcontroller to prompt the motor which is set to roll up the
