1.0 Introduction

Open Source Software

Open source software is software provided for use, modification and redistribution, a
software that any programmer can download from the Internet for free and modify with
suggested and the only qualifation is that changes can’t be copyright.

Hardware

Hardware is a general term that refers to the physical artifacts of a technology. It may
also mean the physical components of a computer system, in the form of computer hardware.

Hardware historically meant the metal parts and fittings that were used to make wooden products
stronger, more functional, longer lasting and easier to fabricate or assemble. In modern usage it
includes equipment such as keys, locks, hinges, latches, corners, handles, wire, chains, plumbing
supplies, tools, utensils, cutlery and machine parts, especially when they are made of metal. In
the United States, this type of hardware has been traditionally sold in hardware stores, a term
also used to a lesser extent in the UK.

In a more colloquial sense, hardware can refer to major items of military equipment, such
as tanks, aircraft or ships.

Software

Software is a general term used to describe a collection of computer programs,

procedures and documentation that perform some tasks on a computer system. The term includes
application software such as word processors which perform productive tasks for users, system
software such as operating systems, which interface with hardware to provide the necessary
services for application software, and middleware which controls and co-ordinates distributed
systems.

"Software" is sometimes used in a broader context to mean anything which is not

hardware but which is used with hardware, such as film, tapes and records.

2.0 The Latest Open Source Operating System (OS)

2.1 Meaning of open source OS

Open source is a programming philosophy whereby all aspects of a program are open for
review. The term usually refers to the source code of the program, but can also refer to files
created by the program, which would be readable in other applications. Many Linux distributions
contain exclusively open source software. The opposite of open source software is proprietary
software, whereby the source code is available only to the developer of the software and to those
who successfully hack it.

Another advantage of paid, proprietary software is the support contract that usually
accompanies it. Those who purchase Microsoft Windows, for instance, are provided with free
installation help by telephone, and can purchase additional support contracts. Linux, on the other
hand, is usually downloaded free of charge, and those who provide the download are under no
obligation to provide installation support for it. Open source software is software that is free to
use without the restrictive licensing of many types of commercial software.

2.2 Example of open source

The example of an Operating System, one is Mac Os. It was the first commercially
successful graphical user interface released in 1984. It is closed source software and is targeted
for use with home desktops and workstation. Moreover Mac OS is operating system used on
Apple Platform.

Another operating system is UNIX; it is use in Cross-Platform. It is a multitasking

operating system developed in early 1970’s by scientist at the Bell Laboratories. Some versions
of UNIX have a command line interface but most versions UNIX offer a graphical user interface.

3.0 The Latest Open Source Application Software

3.1 Meaning of Open Source Application Software

Application software is a computer program or a suite of computer programs that

performs a particular function for user. Application software includes all programs that perform
specific task such as word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, e-mail, and web
browser.

3.2 Example of Open Source Application Software

The example of application software, one is Word Processing. Commercial this software
can be use for the home full version of Corel WordPerfect Office, Open Office Word, and
Microsoft Office Word. By, this software can use for typing letter officially or non-officially.

Another example of application software is Web Browser. Which enables a user to

display and interact with text, images, videos, music, and other information typically located on a
Web page at a website on the World Wide Web or a local area network. Text and images on a
Web page can contain hyperlinks to other Web pages at the same or different website. Web
browsers allow a user too quickly and easily access information provided on many Web pages at
many websites by traversing these links. Web browsers format HTML information for display, so
the appearance of a Web page may differ between browsers. Web browsers are the most
commonly used type of HTTP user agent. Although browsers are typically used to access the
World Wide Web, they can also be used to access information provided by Web servers in private
networks or content in file systems.

5.0 Pervasive Computing

5.1 Meaning of pervasive computing

Pervasive computing means the technology that is gracefully integrated in our everyday
life. The user is no longer aware of this embedded technology.

Moreover, it is about the ability to deliver any information to any device over any
network. In short it is about computers everywhere computer is embedded into equipment,
machines, furniture or people. The current technology has evolved into embedded, networked
and wireless.

5.2 Example of pervasive computing

The example of pervasive computing, one is GPS system in car which uses for guide the
driver to reach a place that he or she where to should they go. This system also can use work
wide so it can use in any country that we does not know.

Another pervasive computing is visa card which can use in world wide and 24 hours
service. Visa card also can be use for buying without cash money.
