What is Reiki

Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese name consisting of 2 words Rei and Ki meaning spiritually guided life energy (commonly known as Universal Life Energy), an energy which animates us all and is found all around us. Reiki is a form of spiritual healing using "universal life energy" channelled through the practitioner to the recipient. Reiki helps to harmonize body, mind and spirit for yourself or anyone you want to help.

Reiki treatment
You relax, fully clothed, on a couch or seated while the healer holds his hands on or above you. A treatment can last an hour or longer depending on the treatment required. In the western world many practitioners use the standard hand positions and commonly a full treatment is given covering all the important organs of the body. There is no pressure on the body making it ideal for treating all ages and conditions, sometimes hands are even held away from the body. The energy flows wherever it is required (spiritually guided) and can normally be felt as a warm sensation or tingling in the body. Receiving Reiki is a very relaxing and soothing experience!

Reiki is an effective healing method

Reiki can be used for many ailments like reducing stress, relieving pain, headaches, stomach upsets, back problems, asthma - respiratory problems, PMT, menstrual problems, sinus, anxiety and many more. You can find treatment suggestions for specific problems under the button "How to use Reiki". (Please observe that Reiki should never be used instead of medical treatment, it should be used as a compliment and a way to become and remain healthy.) There is no belief system attached to Reiki so anyone can receive a Reiki treatment or a Reiki attunement. As in any healing the first step towards a healthier life is a desire to be healed.

Reiki - a powerful and gentle healer

Promotes natural self-healing Balances the energies in the body Balances the organs and glands Strengthens the immune system Treats symptoms and causes of illness Relieves pain Clears toxins Adapts to the natural needs of the receiver Enhances personal awareness Relaxes and reduces stress Promotes creativity Releases blocked and suppressed feelings Aids meditation and positive thinking Heals holistically

Reiki is easy to learn

Anyone can "learn" Reiki. The word learn is not quite right as most of us cannot just read about Reiki and then do it. The ability to use Reiki is normally given via an attunement or initiation. There are 3 levels of Reiki: Reiki 1 and 2 and 3, and the Master level. Once attuned Reiki is easy to use and your ability to use Reiki will never leave you!

Reiki history in change

The Reiki history as such is not changing but the information we have about Reiki and it's founder Dr Mikao Usui is constantly moving forward. Thanks to the work of Reiki Masters like Frank Arjava Petter, William L. Rand and many others we today get a more complete and factual information about Reiki. The facts and new information about Reiki in Japan is also helping the understanding of Reiki, it's history and methods.

"Reiki" with many origins

Hands on healing has been around for many centuries and has been known in many cultures. When you read about Reiki in books or on the Internet you will find several different theories about where Reiki came from: the stars, Lemuria, Atlantis, Egypt, India, Tibet etc. What we do know for a fact is that Reiki was "rediscovered" in Japan by Dr Mikao Usui during the beginning of the 20th century. For us westerners there are 3 persons that play a vital role in the history of Reiki: Dr Mikao Usui, Dr Hayashi, and Mrs Hawayo Takata.

Reiki history in the western world

A couple of years ago we only had Mrs Takata's version of the Reiki story. This version is still widely taught although there seems to be many points in her story that cannot be verified. When Mrs Takata brought Reiki to the western world after Word War II I feel that it might have been possible that she had to modify and westernize the Reiki history to better suit the times. I will not relate Mrs Takata's.

Reiki in Japan
It was for many years believed that the practice of Reiki had died out in Japan but now new information about Reiki in Japan is coming to light. The Japanese Reiki system is slightly different from the Reiki that is used in the west. Written and oral information is translated from Japanese as it becomes available, including Dr Usui's manual. There are now a few books available covering

Reiki as a preventive and curative medicine

Eastern medical philosophy has always emphasized the superiority of maintaining good health over curing illness. Reiki is a preventive medicine par excellence. But it is even more: When practising Reiki on yourself or others, you experience both its preventive and its curative functions at the same time. If you have a disease, Reiki will cure it, if not, Reiki will promote your health and longevity. This preventive cum curative quality of Reiki makes it a unique healing system.

It is natural to be healthy
It is only when certain parts of our bodies fail to function naturally that sickness occurs. The causes may be from bacteria and viruses, organic (toxins) or psychosomatic. Bacteria and viruses are always present in our bodies, but they are kept in check (sometimes even exploited to do useful work for us) as long as our bodies function naturally. Toxins are continually clogging our organs, but as long as we function naturally, these toxins will be neutralized by the chemicals produced by our body. Our brain is continually stressed, but again, if nature runs its course we will be adequately relieved after sleep and rest.

The Eastern concept of health is also wider than that of the West. To be healthy is not just to be free from disease. A person cannot be called healthy if he/she is often restless, irritable or extremely forgetful, cannot concentrate or sleep soundly, and has no zest for work or play.

How does Reiki promote health

First, it frees us from disease; it prevents as well as cures illness. Then it helps us to grow emotionally, mentally and spiritually, giving us the wonderful benefits of health in its wider sense. The preventive and curative qualities of Reiki can be reduced to two simple principles: the cleansing of meridians and balancing of the chakras to achieve a harmonious energy flow.

How does Reiki prevent or cure contagious diseases?

When disease-causing micro-organisms attack certain parts of the body, reserve energy is channelled to meet these attacks. But if the meridians are blocked, then the flow of reserve energy is hindered, and illness results. When using Reiki you cleanse the meridians, harmonizing energy levels and promote a smooth flow of reserve energy to the areas under attack, thus restoring the balance. Practising Reiki increases our reserves of energy, thus preventing any possible future outbreak of illness.

Reiki treatment for mind, body and spirit

This section will cover the Reiki hand positions in general and how to use them for specific ailments. You will also find information about 3 important elements affected by Reiki healing: The main Chakras, The Aura and The Meridians.

Fixed set of hand positions contra intuitive positions

Traditionally many Reiki practitioners give the whole body treatment covering all the handpositions. This method gives a very good overall healing effect and can be recommended if in doubt about the cause of the problem to be treated. Since the Reiki energy is spiritually guided it will in the end go where it is needed. Many practitioners have found that by being guided by their intuition they can reach even better results. Personally I have always found that this is the case. By combining knowledge from different Eastern medical systems I have created a simple guide to which Reiki positions, in my opinion, that can be used to reach the best effect for

different ailments. Under "Reiki hand positions" in the menu to your right you can find pictures and a description on how the system is built (if you know the traditional hand positions you don't have to learn anything new!). Under the button "Reiki treatments" you will find the hand positions I recommend for over 60 different ailments.

Reiki and the chakras

To understand Reiki and the hand positions used one will have to have some knowledge of the chakras. The Reiki hand positions as used here in the west covers and treats all the major chakras. The chakras are both connected to the physical organs in our body and the different layers in the aura.

7 centers of energy

Chakra is a Sanskrit word and means "wheel". A wheel that spins around its own axis and can spin fast or slowly. A chakra will spin in relation to the energy level of your system. Where will you find these chakras? They exist within us all. In the same way that we have a physical body we also have a subtile body. Our chakras are parts of a large network of subtile energies. Today we know that living cells from humans, animals and plants give off invisible energies. Simple groups of living tissue issue a sort of light (aura) that can be seen on a Kirlian photo. Specialized groups of cells that make up physical organs create more organized energy patterns. The human body's system consists of sensory, breathing, circulation, digestion, reproduction and secretion. There are six corresponding chakras for these bodily functions. The brain and the whole being also has one chakra, making a total of 7 major chakras. These chakras are situated at the top of the head, forehead, throat, heart, solar plexus, the navel and at the bottom of the pelvis.

The chakras and the physical body

Every chakra has a corresponding organ in our physical system. The root chakra belongs together with the large intestine and the rectum. It also has a certain influence on the function of the kidneys. The navel chakra belongs to the reproduction system, the testicles and ovaries and also the urinary bladder and kidneys. The solar plexus chakra is in relation to the liver, gall bladder, stomach, spleen and the small intestine. The heart chakra belongs to the heart and the arms. The throat chakra relates to the lungs and the throat. The third eye (forehead) chakra belongs to the brain, face, nose, eyes etc. The crown chakra does not have a corresponding organ but is related to the whole being. There is a clear connection between the condition of a chakra and the condition of the corresponding organ. A chakra can be over active, under active or in balance. Using Reiki can give the chakras balance and the organs health.

Chakras and the endocrine system

The chakras change energy from one level to another by distributing Ki (also called

Chi, Prana, Mana depending on belief system) to the physical body. This is partly done through the endocrine system that regulates other systems in the body. According to tradition each chakra also corresponds to one of the major glands in the body. The Reiki hand positions not only cover the chakras but also major organs and glands. The root chakra is in relation to the adrenal gland. The navel chakra to the ovaries or testicles. The solar plexus chakra is related to the pancreas. The heart chakra belongs together with the thymus. The throat chakra corresponds to the thyroid gland. The third eye chakra has a connection to the pituitary gland. The crown chakra is usually connected to the pineal gland. The endocrine system plays a major role for the body's daily health. The glands release hormones directly into the blood stream and control all aspects of growth, development and daily activities. Physical problems are often the result of a blockage in the energy flow in the system made up of meridians and chakras causing the organs or glands to not function properly.

The aura - the subtile body

Quantum physics describes the universe as energy, with energy and matter interchangeable. Psychology, Eastern therapy, and complementary medicine all have terms for life as energy. The aura can be viewed as an energy field surrounding the body, interacting through spiritual and psychological levels via structures called chakras. In other words the aura is an energy field that surrounds the physical body and is discernible to those of psychical sight. The 7 main chakras have their origin in the physical body but they also exist in all the layers of the aura. The speed and vibration level of the energy is increased with each level. One can say that the human consciousness is manifested on 7 levels or in the 7 layers that is the aura.

How Reiki affects the aura

Before a Reiki attunement a persons aura might normally only extend a few decimeters outside the persons body. The attunement strengthens the aura and gives a permanent aura of about 2 -3 meters. At the same time the consciousness, the inner strength and the ability to intuitively see what needs to be changed in order to achieve maximum health is increased. Through the Reiki attunement and the strengthening of the aura you get the tool to take control over your life and development. During a Reiki treatment not only the organs and the energy flow within the body are affect but also the different bodies of the aura are affected. When using distance healing or the mental/emotional symbol the aura seems to be more affected than the actual organs in the body.

The different layers/bodies in the aura

The Physical body, is the most tangible manifestation of our consciousness. Its function is to be here and now, to be conscious of what we do: walking when walking, eating when eating etc. We all know the fears of the physical body sickness, aging and death.

The Etheric body, is a thin invisible layer, approx. 2 cm thick, around the

physical body. This is where the energy is reflected when it flows through meridians and chakras. The etheric body or double acts as a template for the physical body and appears as an energy matrix. It is described in Chinese medicine as meridians that transmit chi (ki) through the body. Consciousness is expressed in terms of sensations like physical pleasure or pain. Many of our dreams can be found in the etheric body. With the aid of mantras, symbols, essence etc. one can affect the During a Reiki treatment not only the organs and the energy

The system of meridians

The Chinese, in the 3rd millennium B.C., posited the existence of a vital energy which they called Chi (life force, life energy). All matter, animate and inanimate, is composed of and pervaded with this universal energy. Same as we need blood to flow freely through our body's circulatory system we also need Chi to flow freely through our system of meridians. Simplified one can say that the meridians are the equivalent of our blood vessels but instead of transporting blood this system transports Chi or life energy. Sickness can occur when there is a blockage in the meridians and the Chi no longer can flow freely or when the yin and yang balance of the Chi is disturbed.

12 primary meridians

There are two systems of channels or meridians, namely primary and secondary meridians. Primary meridians pass through internal organs but secondary do not. There are 12 pairs of primary meridians with Chi flowing in continuous circulation through the following organs: lungs, colon, stomach, spleen, heart, intestines, urinary bladder, kidneys, pericardium, triple warmer, gall bladder and liver. The primary meridians are named by the organ they are connected to i.e. lung meridian, heart meridian etc. Almost all points used in acupuncture and acupressure are situated along the primary meridians. Please note that just because the meridians are named according to the organs they pass through it does not mean that they only correspond to these organs and their functions. The meridians also consist of complex interrelated systems for the circulation of Chi.

Yin and Yang

This Chi contains two polar forces, the yin and the yang. When the yin and yang are balanced, the living system exhibits physical health; when they are unbalanced, a diseased state results. Overly powerful yang results in excessive organic activity. Predominate yin makes for insufficient functioning. Either imbalance results in physical illness. The ancient art of acupuncture and acupressure focuses on balancing the yin and the yang.

Reiki and the meridians

A Reiki treatment will balance the yin and yang and facilitate a smooth flow of Chi through the meridian system. Blockages in meridians can be dissolved by Reiki and help restore the body's healthy flow of Chi.

The Human Body and its Organs

A site about healing should not only contain information about our subtile body but also about our physical body. I have therefore included three pages from my student material with different views of the organs in the body. You can find information about the function of the respective organs.

Reiki Hand Positions

The effectiveness and ease of use in the Reiki system is based on the hand positions. The Reiki hand positions we use in the Western world probably come from Mrs Takata. According to new findings Mikao Usui and Dr. Hayashi seem to have mostly worked with the head and directly on the problem area. (See The Book"The Original Reiki Handbook of Dr Mikao Usui

The traditional Reiki hand positions cover all the important major chakras and quite a few acupuncture points. Traditionally it is also common to give a whole treatment which will take just over an hour and give a very good overall balancing effect. Personally I have found that it is even more effective to listen to my intuition and use specific points when treating an ailment. There is no need for the removal of clothes. The Reiki practitioner will during the session place his/her hands on all the positions or in some cases just a few. This is usually very relaxing and beneficial for both parties. Below you will find links to photos of the different positions. If you continue to "Reiki treatments" you can read more on how I have divided up the hand positions and also find suggested treatments for a large number of ailments. ACNE
Acne occurs when the glands secrete too much oil. Normally the oil flows from the glands to the skin's surface, but if the dead skin cells accumulate, they can clog the pores. According to Chinese medicine the skin reflects our internal health. Acne is sometimes also an indicator of toxic conditions. Too much waste products collected in the kidneys, lungs, or intestine or due to allergies, high fat diet, emotional problems, pollution. Sudden appearance of acne in adulthood may be a sign of hormonal imbalance or drug toxicity (usually from steroids). Get a medical checkup to rule out these possibilities. Clean the skin regularly with soap and water as well as with the special acne formulas containing benzoyl peroxide.

Why people develop allergies still remains a mystery. Sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, sinus congestion, hives, swelling are all symptoms of allergies. Allergies can affect almost any area of the body. Substances that irritate the skin, allergic reactions to drugs, detergents, and other chemicals are all culprits. Also, grass, house dust, pets, wheat, colorants, additives and preservatives are all possiblities. Hay fever is an allergic condition triggered by inhalant substances (frequently pollens), which leads to sneezing and inflammation of the nose and conjunctiva of the eyes. Any skin inflammation may be considered Dermatitis. Redness, scaling, and thickening of the skin may occur with dermatitis. Pinpointing the cause of the problem is the first step toward alleviating the symptoms. Eczema is another type that is allergy related. It can appear as dry, cracking, crusting and red patches on the skin. The skin can become inflamed and itchy. Many factors can contribute to eczema. Stress is a major factor. Hives are lumps or weals that are very itchy. They can appear all of a sudden. They can be related to a particular food or as another commplication from allergies or stress. Anaphylactic shock can kill by suffocation, the result of swelling of the larynx and obstruction of the airway. Anaphylactic shock can occur in response to insect stings, ingestion of allergenic foods in sensitive individuals, and injected or swallowed doses of medication. It is a medical emergency!

Arthritis
Means " joint inflammation" a general term for over 100 joint disorders with symptoms from mild aches and pains to severe swelling and crippling pain. Good nutrition can play a big part in controlling arthritis. Your joints, remarkable and elaborate hinges, are cushioned by cartilage. They're held together with various other tissues, including muscles and tendons. Lubrication is in the form of called synovial fluid. If you have osteoarthritis, the kind that most frequently coincides with aging, the cartilage around the joints starts to thin down or disappear. Overuse may be the root of the problem. Obesity may contribute to the development of osteoarthritis in weight-bearing joints. Rheumatoid arthritis, an inflammatory disease, is far less common, and equally painful. With some people, the onset begins between the ages of 30 and 40, but more often it starts when people are between the ages of 40 and 60. For reasons that aren't fully understood, your body's immune system attacks your own joints, which start to suffer consequences. For osteoarthritis, there are many tactics that can help hold off pain and maintain mobility. Some of these strategies might help people with rheumatoid arthritis as well. It all hinges on staying active.

Aromatherapy:
Aromatherapy complements other treatments for arthritis. Essential oils that benefit arthritis include basil, lemon, eucalyptus ginger, black pepper. These oils can ease pain and discomfort, reduce swelling, and relieve sore muscles.

Asthma attacks occur when, the muscle around the bronchi go into spasm. The bronchi narrow and breathing becomes difficult. Inflammation can also swell the lining of the air tubes. Mucous may increase blockage to the air tubes as well. Many things can trigger an attack: strenuous exercise, cigarette smoke, respiratory infections, industrial chemicals, aspirin, pet dander, indoor pollution and the sulfites added to many foods. Stress also plays a role in asthma. Severe anxiety can trigger attacks, and stress generally aggravates asthma symptoms. You should do mild exercise: swimming, light aerobics, yoga, and eat a healthy diet. Try to determine which foods in your diet trigger attacks.

Cerebral Palsy
The damage responsible for cerebral palsy occurs only while the brain is immature either during development before birth, during birth itself, or during childhood. There are three main forms of the disease plus a mixed form. Spastic This is the most common form, and also the one that varies most widely in severity. The most typical symptom is difficulty in walking. Mildly affected children may display only slight clumsiness in such activities as running or handwriting. Others, however, are unable to manage even the simplest voluntary motions. Choreoathetoid is the second form typical symptoms are spontaneous, involuntary muscle contractions - either abrupt jerks or repetitive athetoid writhing. Those affected have trouble keeping their bodies stable, whether standing or sitting. Ataxic - This form weakens the sense of balance, the perception of depth and distance, and the ability to reach objects accurately or to identify them by touch. The muscles are flabby, and walking is unsteady. Mixed - Some of those affected have symptoms of more than one form of the disease.

Head: H1, H2, H3, Body: B1, B2, B3, B6 Legs and feet: L3 Back: BA1, BA4

The common cold

A cold is a respiratory infection caused by one of hundreds of possible viruses. Because these viruses are so widespread today, it is perhaps more accurate to say that colds are caused by a decrease in immunity that allows viruses to take hold.

Colds occur more frequently in winter, but no one knows exactly why. Nearly everyone catches colds occasionally, but some people catch colds quite frequently, and others tend to stay sick an unusually long time. Conventional medicine can neither cure nor prevent the common cold. Furthermore, none of the over-the-counter treatments have been found to shorten the duration of a cold or even provide significant temporary relief. Some natural treatments seem to do a better job.

Depression
(Often caused by supressed anger.) Depression is a common emotional illness that varies widely in its intensity from person to person. The Reiki treatment described

above is useful only for mild to moderate depressive symptoms consisting mainly of depressed mood, fatigue, insomnia, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. More severe depression includes markedly depressed mood complicated by symptoms such as slowed speech, slowed (or agitated) responses, markedly impaired memory and concentration, excessive (or diminished) sleep, significant weight loss (or weight gain), intense feelings of worthlessness and guilt, recurrent thoughts of suicide, and lack of interest in pleasurable activities. Severe clinical depression is a dangerous and excruciating illness. The emotional structure of the brain has frozen into a pattern of misery that cannot be altered by willpower, a change of scenery, or the most earnest efforts of friends. In a sense, the brain has locked up like a crashed computer. No alternative treatment is especially successful when depression gets this bad.

Reiki treatment suggestion for diabetes (same as pancreas)

Diabetes
A chronic disease in which the body is either unable to produce enough of the hormone insulin or unable to use insulin efficiently. This results in high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood and can lead to heart and kidney disease, nerve damage, vision loss and other complications. Insulin-dependent diabetes (type 1) usually appears before age 30; non-insulin-dependent diabetes (type 2) develops later and accounts for 90% of cases.

Dizziness
Vertigo is closely related to dizziness, but involves the perception of actually seeing the room spin about you, similar to what happens when you spin around rapidly and then stop. Often, vertigo is accompanied by nausea and a loss of balance. Vertigo may pass quickly, or it may last for hours or even days.

There are many possible causes of vertigo including motion sickness, infection in the inner ear, vision problems, head injury, insufficient blood supply to the brain and brain tumors. A condition called benign paroxysmal positional vertigo leads to attacks of vertigo triggered by certain head positions; its cause is believed to be deposits of calcium in the inner ear. Another condition, Meniere's disease, is characterized by sudden, intense attacks of vertigo often accompanied by nausea and vomiting, along with ringing in the ears and progressive deafness. Its cause is unknown.

Reiki treatment suggestion for dysmenorrhea

Treat positions:

Dysmenorrhea
The medical term for menstrual cramps is dysmenorrhea. There are two types of dysmenorrhea, primary and secondary. In primary dysmenorrhea, there is no underlying gynecologic problem causing the pain. In secondary dysmenorrhea, some underlying abnormal condition (usually involving a woman's reproductive system) contributes to the menstrual pain. It is not known why menstruation is uncomfortable at all, or why it is much more painful for some women than for others and varies so much from month to month. Occasionally, severe menstrual pain indicates the presence of endometriosis (a condition in which uterine tissue is growing in places other than the uterus) or uterine fibroids (benign tumors in the uterus), but in most cases no such identifiable abnormality can be found.

Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a growth of cells similar to those that form the inside of the uterus but these grow outside of the uterus. These cells are most commonly found on the ovaries, the fallopian tubes, outer surfaces of the uterus or intestines, and on the surface lining of the pelvic cavity. They can also be found on the liver, vagina, old surgery scars, and even in the lung or brain. They are generally benign (not cancerous). Endometriosis mostly affects women in their reproductive years. The cause of endometriosis is unknown. There are several theories, but none of them have been proven. Most women who have endometriosis do not have symptoms. Of those who do experience symptoms, the common symptoms are pain (usually pelvic) and infertility. Pelvic pain usually occurs during or just before menstruation and lessens after menstruation. Some women experience pain or cramping with intercourse, bowel movements and/or urination.

Epilepsy
Epilepsy, a physical condition caused by sudden, brief changes in how the brain works. In most cases no cause can be found, but head injuries, brain tumors, lead poisoning, problems in brain development before birth, and certain genetic and infectious illnesses can all cause epilepsy. Epilepsy occurs when nerve cells in the brain fire electrical impulses at a rate of up to four times higher than normal. This causes a sort of electrical storm in the brain, known as a seizure. A pattern of repeated seizure is referred to as epilepsy.

The cause of the condition is unknown, but it occurs most often in women aged 3050. Other symptoms commonly believed to be associated with fibromyalgia are irritable bowel syndrome, urinary frequency, anxiety, headache, and numbness or tingling.

There is usually the presence of widespread chronic pain and the existence of pain in at least 11 of 18 specific points on the body when pressure is applied. Although the cause of fibromyalgia is not known, it may be related to poor sleeping with incomplete muscular relaxation.

Gall bladder problems

The job of the gallbladder is to store the bile produced by the liver and to release it on an as-needed basis for digestive purposes. The various elements of bile have a natural tendency to form sludge, lumps, and hard deposits called gallstones. More than 20% of women and 8% of men develop gallstones at some time in their lives. You could have gallstones in your body for many years without experiencing any problems. According to current medical guidelines, no treatment is necessary unless pain or other problems begin to develop. However, when a gallstone plugs the duct that leads out of the gallbladder, the organ becomes inflamed and often infected, creating a condition known as cholecystitis.

Generally, gallbladder pain begins with occasional minor attacks that subside rapidly. Perhaps the stones are blocking the duct temporarily and then moving out of the way. However, when full obstruction occurs, the pain often becomes severe and recurrent. The most reliable symptom of cholecystitis is intense pain beneath the right lower rib cage, often occurring from midnight to 3 A.M. Typically, pain radiates to the right shoulder and is accompanied by a loss of appetite and sometimes nausea. Frequently, fatty meals seem to bring on the pain with particular force.

Headache and Migraine

The term migraine refers to a class of headaches sharing certain characteristic symptoms. The two main subcategories of migraine are the common and the classic migraine. In common migraines, headache pain usually occurs in the forehead or temples, often on one side only and typically accompanied by nausea and a preference for a darkened room. Headache attacks last from several hours up to a day or more. They are usually separated by completely pain-free intervals. In the rarer form of migraine, called classic migraine, headache pain is accompanied by a visual disturbance known as an aura. Otherwise, symptoms are similar to those of the common migraine. Migraines can be triggered by a variety of causes, including fatigue, stress, hormonal changes, and foods such as alcohol, chocolate, peanuts, and avocados. However, in many people, migraines occur with no obvious triggering factor.

Piles or hemorrhoids are swollen (or varicose) veins in the lining of the anus. The varicosity may be just above the anal canal, causing internal hemorrhoids or at the lower end of the canal causing external hemorrhoids. The latter may even protrude outside the anus. Piles are caused by increased pressure on the veins of the anus. Symptoms are pain and bleeding during bowl movement or soreness and itching around the anus or possibly a mucus discharge from external hemorrhoids.

Hypertension - High blood pressure

Blood pressure is the force with which the blood presses against the arterial walls as it circulates. In a person with high blood pressure or hypertension, this force is greater than normal and causes the arterial walls to narrow and thicken which puts extra strain on the heart. Obesity, alcohol and sugar intake, and hereditary and ethnic factors all contribute as well as diabetes and pregnancy. Symptoms: Mild hypertension has no symptoms. Severe hypertension gives headaches, shortness of breath, visual disturbances, giddiness. Aromatherapy: Lavender will soothe and relax. Regular massage with oils of lavender, Marjoram and Ylang Ylang can have a beneficial effect.

It is perhaps most commonly noticed on standing up suddenly from a sitting or prone position but can also result from severe hemorrhage, burn, gastroenteritis or dehydration. Symptoms: Fainting, paleness, a weak pulse and diluted pupils. Aromatherapy: Regular massage with oils of Black pepper, Lemon, Sage or Rosemary will stimulate and warm.

Incontinence Urinary or bladder incontinence is the unintentional loss of urine. Although about half of the elderly have episodes of incontinence, bladder problems are not a natural consequence of aging, and they are not exclusively a problem of the elderly. Urinary incontinence can be improved in 8 out of 10 cases. Incontinence has a number of causes. Women are most likely to develop incontinence either during pregnancy and childbirth, or after the hormonal changes of menopause because of weakened pelvic muscles. Older men can become incontinent as the result of prostate surgery. Pelvic trauma, spinal cord damage, caffeine, or medications, can also cause episodes of UI. Other factors that contribute to bladder incontinence include decreased mobility or impaired thinking (such as forgetfulness, confusion, or senility), particularly in combination with drugs such as sedatives, sleeping pills, and alcohol.

Insomnia
Sleep is a natural body function during which we are relatively unconscious and the muscles that we normally control are relaxed. The result of sleep is a refreshment of the nervous system (including the brain) and of the muscles. Sleep plays a central role in everyone's life and as we age, our bodies normally require less sleep. Infants require from 12 to 14 hours while seniors may require from 6 to 8 hours. Sleep is initiated by specialized areas in the brain. Certain brain areas are also responsible for wakefulness. There are various stages of sleep which are defined by body motions as well as by the character of the electrical activity in the brain. When we have persistent difficulty in falling asleep, clock watching should be avoided. Sometimes very slow, deep breathing can encourage drowsiness. It can be helpful to get out of bed and do a quiet activity that is relaxing. (This might be reading or writing, for examples.) Remaining in bed while you cannot sleep is usually not helpful. We can also promote a better sleep on our own by altering our diets, by changing our lifestyles, and with medications.

Kidney problems There are several types of problems connected to the kidneys: kidney cancer, kidney stones, kidney failure, kidney cysts. Healthy kidneys clean the blood by filtering out extra water and wastes. They also make hormones that keep your bones strong and blood healthy. Your kidneys are extremly important for your overall health! When both of your kidneys fail, your body holds fluid. Your blood pressure rises. Harmful wastes build up in your body. Your body doesn't make enough red blood cells. You develop fatigue, nausea, and loss of appetite. When this happens, you need treatment to replace the work of your failed kidneys.

The lungs Your lungs are located within your chest cavity inside the rib cage. They are made of spongy, elastic tissue that stretches and constricts as you breathe. The lungs and airways bring in fresh, oxygen-enriched air and get rid of waste carbon dioxide made by your cells. They also help in regulating the concentration of hydrogen ion (pH) in your blood. In Chinese (and other Eastern medicines) the lungs also add Chi or life energy to your system. You don't have to think about breathing because your body's autonomic nervous system controls it, as it does many other functions in your body. There are many common conditions that can affect your lungs. Diseases or conditions of the lung fall mainly into two classes: 1. Those that make breathing harder 2. those that damage the lungs' ability to exchange carbon dioxide for oxygen. 1. Influence on the mechanics of breathing: Asthma: Emphysema Bronchitis Pneumothorax (collapse of the lungs usually caused by trauma or injury) Apnea (breathing slows or stops)

2. Conditions that minimize or prevent gas exchange: Pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs) Smoke inhalation Carbon monoxide poisoning

Menstrual pains/cramps Menstrual cramps are abdominal and pelvic area (belly) pains that are experienced by a woman around the time of her menstrual period. Menstrual cramps are not the

same as the discomfort felt during premenstrual syndrome (PMS) although the symptoms of both disorders can sometimes be experienced as a continual process. Many women suffer from both PMS and menstrual cramps. Menstrual cramps can range from mild to quite severe. Mild menstrual cramps may be barely noticeable and of short duration - sometimes felt just as a sense of light heaviness in the belly. Severe menstrual cramps can be so painful that they interfere with a woman's regular activities for several days.

Migraine A migraine headaches is a form of vascular headache which affect millions of people daily. Vascular headaches are a group of headaches that are felt to involve abnormal sensitivity of the blood vessels (arteries) in the brain to various triggers which results in rapid changes in the artery size due to spasm (constriction). Other arteries in the brain and scalp then open (dilate), and throbbing pain is perceived in the head. Migraine headaches are the most common type of vascular headache. Migraine headaches are thought to be an inherited disorder which involves serotonin, a chemical in the brain involved in the transmission of nerve impulses. These nerve impulses trigger a release of substances in the blood vessels that in turn cause the pain of the migraine. These same nerve impulses cause the flashing lights and other sensory phenomena described below, known as an aura, that may accompany a migraine. Migraine headaches, which can totally disable an individual, generally have no impact on the individual's normal state of health once resolved. Not all severe headaches are migraines. Likewise, not all migraines are severe.

Multiple Sclerosis It is a disease in which the nerves of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) degenerate. Myelin, which provides a covering or insulation for nerves, improves the conduction of impulses along the nerves and also is important for maintaining the health of the nerves. In MS, inflammation causes the myelin to degenerate and eventually disappear. Consequently, the electrical impulses that travel along the nerves decelerate. Late in the disease, the nerves themselves are damaged. As more and more nerves are affected, a patient experiences a progressive interference with functions that are controlled by the nervous system such as vision, speech, walking, writing, and memory. Women are twice as likely as men are to be affected by MS earlier in life. Later in life, the incidence of the disease in men and women is almost equal.

Head: H2, H3, Body: B1, B3, B4, B5, Legs and feet: L3 Back: BA3, BA4,
Problems with the pancreas Your pancreas is a large gland behind your stomach and close to your duodenum. The pancreas secretes powerful digestive enzymes that enter the small intestine through a duct. These enzymes help you digest fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. The pancreas also releases the hormones insulin and glucagon into the bloodstream. These hormones play an important part in metabolizing sugar.

Pancreatitis is a rare disease in which the pancreas becomes inflamed. Damage to the gland occurs when digestive enzymes are activated and begin attacking the pancreas. In severe cases, there may be bleeding into the gland, serious tissue damage, infection, and cysts. Enzymes and toxins may enter the bloodstream and seriously injure organs, such as the heart, lungs, and kidney. There are two forms of pancreatitis. The acute form occurs suddenly and may be a severe, life-threatening illness with many complications. Usually, the patient recovers completely. If injury to the pancreas continues, such as when a patient persists in drinking alcohol, a chronic form of the disease may develop, bringing severe pain and reduced functioning of the pancreas that affects digestion and causes weight loss.

Prostate problems

The prostate is a small organ about the size of a walnut. It lies below the bladder (where urine is stored) and surrounds the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder). The prostate makes a fluid that becomes part of semen. Semen is the white fluid that contains sperm. Prostate problems are common in men 50 and older. Most can be treated successfully without harming sexual function. Most problems with the prostate comes form what is refered to as benign prostatic hyperplasia and is a nonmalignant (noncancerous) enlargement of the prostate gland, a common occurrence in older men. BPH generally begins in a man's 30s, evolves slowly and only causes symptoms after 50.

In BPH, the prostate gland grows in size. It may compress the urethra which courses through the center of the prostate. This can impede the flow of urine from the bladder through the urethra to the outside. It can cause urine to backup in the bladder (retention) and the need for frequent urination. If severe enough, complete blockage of the urethra can occur, which can injure the kidneys. BPH is extremely common. Half of all men over 50 develop symptoms of BPH, but only 10% need medical or surgical intervention.

Sciatica

Sciatica is pain resulting from irritation of the sciatic nerve. Sciatica pain is typically felt from the low back to behind the thigh and radiating down below the knee. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and begins from nerve roots in the lumbar spinal cord in the low back and extends through the buttock area to send nerve endings down the lower limb. While sciatica is most commonly a result of a disc herniation directly pressing on the nerve, any cause of irritation or inflammation of this nerve can reproduce the symptoms of sciatica. These cause include irritation of the nerve from adjacent bone, tumors, muscle, internal bleeding, infections, injury, and other causes.

Sinusitis Sinusitis, inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, is one of the more common diseases that may afflict people throughout their lives. It is estimated that the average adult has three to four upper respiratory infections each year and that about 1% of these infections are complicated by sinusitis. The paranasal sinuses are air-filled cavities in the dense portions of the bones of the skull, which were formed to decrease the overall weight of the skull. These air filled cavities are formed essentially in four left and right pairs. The frontal sinuses are positioned behind the area of the forehead, while the maxillary sinuses are behind the cheeks. The sphenoid and ethmoid sinuses are found deeper in the skull behind the eyes and maxillary sinuses. The sinuses are lined by mucous secreting cells. The air gets into the sinuses through small openings in the bones that allow connection to the nasal passageways, called ostia. If any of these openings become blocked, air can't properly pass into the sinuses and likewise the mucous produced by the cells lining the sinuses can't drain out.

Thyroid The thyroid gland produces hormones that are essential for normal body metabolism. This gland is located in the lower part of the neck, below the Adam's apple. The gland wraps around the windpipe (trachea). The thyroid gland uses iodine (mostly available from the diet in foods such as seafood, bread, and salt) to produce thyroid hormones. These hormones are essential for the function of every cell in the body. They help regulate growth and the rate of chemical reactions (metabolism) in the body. They also help regulate heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and the rate at which food is converted into energy. Notice that the thyroid itself is regulated by another gland that is located in the brain, called the pituitary gland. In turn, the pituitary is regulated in part by the thyroid (via a "feedback" effect of thyroid hormone on the pituitary gland) and by another gland called the hypothalamus.

In many cases it is not a serious problem, but more of a nuisance. For some people it is a living hell. Tinnitus can arise in any of the four sections of the ear: the outer ear, the middle ear, the inner ear, and the brain. Fluid, infection, or disease of the middle ear bones or ear drum (tympanic membrane) can also cause tinnitus. One of the most common causes of tinnitus is damage to the microscopic endings of the hearing nerve in the inner ear. Advancing age is generally accompanied by a certain amount of hearing nerve impairment, and consequently tinnitus. Loud noise exposure is a very common cause of tinnitus today, and it often damages hearing as well. Some medications (aspirin, for example) and other diseases of the inner ear (Meniere's syndrome) can cause tinnitus. Tinnitus can in rare situations be a symptom of such serious problems as an aneurysm or a brain tumor.

Reiki treatment for common diseases

In the western method of Reiki it has been the norm to recommend a full body treatment for any medical problem. Personally, as mentioned before, I have found that treating specific chakras or points connected to the organ or energy blockage causing the problem gives a much better result. Hand positions for quick results Based on a broad knowledge of the eastern way of looking at disease and methods for healing via the meridian system and acupuncture points etc. I have compounded information about which Reiki hand positions yield the best results for a specific problem. My system is based on the common Reiki hand positions used here in the Western world. I have divided the body and positions into 4 different areas: Head, Body, Legs/Feet and Back. Hand position photos to help you If you choose the disease in the drop down menu above you will get a page with the Reiki hand positions that are most effective for that

specific problem. You can also click to see a picture and a description of any position given.

Reiki Attunements
Reiki Attunements are energy empowerment that is given to the student by a Reiki master. They are the direct connection to Universal Life Force and the base of the Universal healing Reiki. A qualified Master/teacher of the Reiki system must pass special symbols into the student energy channel. Once attuned, the initiated practitioner will forever have the ability to use their hands as healing instruments for themselves and others. A simple willingness is all that is required. In Western Reiki tradition there are 3 levels or degrees of authentic Reiki attunements. I Degree Reiki Attunement. First Reiki power symbol is implanted. Reiki light is turned on inside the students energy field and they will carry this light for eternity. With this physical healing and physical cleansing process will begin within the student. Daily self healing using Reiki hand positions and Reiki meditations are highly recommended. The more one uses Reiki, the stronger Reiki flow becomes. From that point on a Reiki I practitioner can help others by simply placing both hands on their body thus initiating Reiki flow. II Degree Reiki Attunement Two more symbols are activated within the students energy field, emotional/mental and long distance healing symbol. This will begin emotional cleansing process and it might get tough for a while. This is a clearing of old patterns and thoughts that block growth. When I was attuned to Reiki II, I had a smooth transition. However; my mom plunged into depression, old stuff needed to be processed surfaced and it wasnt easy for her. My friend, Julia, went through the dark night of the soul after her second attunement. Once again, not everyones emotional cleansing is so dramatic, some people hardly notice any changes. Do understand that you will come out on the other side lighter, stronger, and happier. Three Reiki symbols are taught to the student during the second Reiki attunement and they open unlimited possibilities of emotional and mental healing in addition to physical healing, long distance healing, protection, and manifesting. III Degree Reiki Attunements It is where Reiki master symbols are activated and a student becomes a teacher. It is an awesome privilege and responsibility and I am loving the journey. Usui said that the purpose of Reiki system was to keep our bodies healthy, to help us lead peaceful and happy lives, to heal others and to improve the happiness of others and ourselves. Authentic Reiki heals bodies and transforms lives. It did mine. The practice of intuitive Reiki is ancient and yet evolving and expanding like the Universe itself. Much has been written about the power of Reiki to heal the physical body, yet the mystery remains. What is the origin of Reiki? How ancient is it? Or is it eternal and ever-present? If so, how ancient is the knowledge about it? Did Christ heal with universal healing Reiki? Did Buddha? What exactly is authentic Reiki?

Definition of Reiki The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy." Reiki is the the union of absolute consciousness and living energy. Reiki is in every breath, yet beyond the breath. It is you and I, the perfume of the jasmine blooms, the blow of the wind, the blinking charm of the star, the expanding warmth in the heart, the smile of a stranger, the water of the ocean, the blood and sweat of the body, and the mysterious intelligence behind and beyond all that is. This absolute intelligence created an amazing spiral of a sunflower and a snail shell, the magnificent complexity of human body and the cosmos and is manifesting this very second through your heartbeat, the warmth of your skin, and the vibration of the sounds around you. Because of the evolutionary stage of humanity, where we create our self images and get attached to them, where we identify ourselves with our limited thoughts and emotions, where our past hurts rule our present reactions, where we are blinded by our self weaved web of perceptions and limitations, we feel separated from the divine, alone, and fearful. Reiki is the link to unity. Authentic Reiki is ever loving, always available an awesome healing energy. For Reiki is love. Love heals. Love has no limitations. Nothing is beyond healing. One is already powerful beyond any limitations. Universal healing Reiki Ryoho system is a tool to realize that potential. An awesomely powerful tool indeed.

When I first received Reiki attunement, I felt the energy in my hands right away. To be more accurate, some time before the attunement, my hands began to feel rather strange at times. I would feel odd tingling and numbness in my hands. I felt energy I didnt know what to do with. As I received my first Reiki attunment, it all came together. I felt everything right away, the waves of energy when I first laid my hands on my classmate and her aura. It felt like I always knew how to do it. When I went home the same night, my boyfriend complained of back pain. Timidly, I offered healing. Not only his pain went away, but he felt powerful heat coming from my hands, his whole body felt on fire, which frightened him for he never experienced anything like this before. As I laid Reiki healing hands on numerous people and send healing long distance, I witnessed the magic of Reiki over and over. To this day I am in awe of power of Reiki. Once a person is attuned to Reiki, he is forever linked to this awesome reality. One can never lose this connection no matter what. But it is up to you how deep you will connect to unity, or how close you move toward love. Authentic Reiki is not a religion or doctrine. No matter what a persons believes are, Reiki will harmonize their life on many levels. Authentic Reiki Ryoho system is a specific way of sharing Gods energy. Reiki is a way of loving. A way of sharing our wholeness and divinity.

The five Reiki Principles Just for today, I will not anger Just for today, I will not worry Just for today, with gratitude I will live my live honestly And be kind to all living things.

Reiki Symbols
Five Traditional Usui Reiki Symbols

reiki usui reiki reiki symbols reiki attunements

There are five symbols used in the Usui Reiki attunement process. The first four of the five symbols are also used when Reiki treatments (both hands-on and absentia) are being done. Reiki symbols have traditionally been shrouded with mystery and secrecy. These sacred symbols do not hold any special power in of themselves. The symbols were devised as teaching tools for their Reiki students to use while giving treatments and passing attunements. It is the intention the practitioner focuses on when using them that energizes the symbols. 1. The Power Reiki Symbol

Japanese Name: Cho Ku Rei Intention: Light Switch Purposes: Manifestation, increased power, accelerated healing, healing catalyst The Cho Ku Rei (power symbol) is used to increase power, and decrease power (when used in reverse). This symbol looks like a coil. The coil is meant to expand and retract, regulating the flow of "ki" energies. Sometimes a subtle energy flow is needed, where as other times a blast of energy is better. Praised for its manifestation power, this symbol is a wonderful law of attraction focusing tool. 2. The Harmony Reiki Symbol

Japanese Name: Sei Hei Ki Intention: Purification Purposes: Cleasing, protection, mental and emotional healing The Sei Hei Ki symbolizes harmony. Call it peacemaker or harmonizer if you like, but the Sei Hei Ki will refuse to negotiate an unfair outcome. It truly is a protective shield of armour. It gives courage to the disheartened and helps to level the playing field when life's hard knocks is kicking your butt. It scorches addictions and expels negative energies. Make this symbol your best bud and it will not let you down. Sei Hei Ki is loyal friend, especially whenever you are facing difficulties. 3. The Connection Reiki Symbol

Japanese Name: Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen Intention: Timelessness Purposes: Distant healing, past/present/future, healing karma, spiritual connection Best known for its extention powers, the Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen symbol is used when sending Reiki long distance. It symbolizes a shapeshifter that can slip through time and space. Another name for this symbol is "Pagoda" because of its towerlike appearance. Elastic in texture it is a fun symbol to play with during your healing visualizations. Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen can also transform itself into a key that will unlock the Akashic Records. For this reason this symbol is an essential tool for the Reiki practitioner when working on inner child or past live issues with their clients. 4. The Master Reiki Symbol

Japanese Name: Dai Ko Myo Intention: Enlightenment Purposes: Empowerment, soul healing, oneness This Master symbol represents all that is Reiki. Dai Ko Myo is the heart of Reiki. The symbol is seldom used for any particular purpose other than as a reminder that Reiki is love and available to everyone. 5. The Completion Reiki Symbol

Japanese Name: Raku Intention: Grounding Purposes: Kundalini healing, hara connection, chakra alignment The Raku symbol is used solely during the final stage of the Reiki attunement process. Its intention is to ground and seal the newly awakened Reiki energies. The striking lightening bolt symbol is drawn downwards from the heavens to the earth.
