Reflection On The Childs Profile

Learning and learner subject is a new thing for me as I only heard it from my senior and also other lecturers. Some say that it is an interesting subject while some say that this subject same with Child Develepment subject that we study last semester. At first time before doing this assignment, I did not understand much about Learning and Learner and its importance. As we all know that there is big difference between learning it in the class than experience it by ourselves. So when assigned to do this coursework, I was so interested because I believed that I can gain hands on experience and learn more about learning and learner through the process of this assignment. As for this coursework, we were required to express ourselves in

choosing and carrying out activities to collect data and also to use specific theories in understanding a childs development. During the process of this assignment, I conduct the activity with during our School Based Experience at Sk. Bukit Gelugor. It is located near to our campus. Before I can carry out some activities with one of the kids in the classroom, I have to ask the permission from the headmistress first and she allowed me to choose one of the kids in the year 4 class. I was enjoyed communicating with the headmistress and the teachers. They were so helpful. When we choosing one of the kids, they gave all details about each child and helped us to choose which one of them suitable for our research. As a result after considered a lot of things, I chose a cute boy named Muhammad Izuwan Shah B. Zainuddin. He is 10 years old and looked very active. His ambition is to be a doctor. While interviewing him at first time, I was quite disappointed with his quiet behaviour and he talked silently until I unable to hear any of words came out from his mouth. However, he started to respond me when I asked him to take picture with me and promised him to give him chocolate. I realized that when we deal with a kid we should know how to persuade them and not to force them to do something if they look uncomfortable. On the next day which was 2nd March on Friday, I started to conduct my activities with Muhd. Izuwan. Our activity is relating cognitive development. The activity was carried out by pouring the same quantity of water into two container with same

diameters and heights first and then poured the water in the one of the container into the other container with different diameter and height. The purpose of this activity is to analyse whether the child could master the conservation of quantity and as for the result, the child could comprehend the concept by saying the amount of water still the same even though it was poured into the container with different diameters and heights. This did not surprised me at all because Jean Piaget mentioned in his theory, kids in the age between 7 to 12 years, are able to master the principle of conservation. From that, I can say that the theory is accurate. The second activity named Which One Doesnt Belong, and Why? . He looked excited when I showed some cue cards with the different colours. For this activity, we asked the child to identify the name some objects that are belong to the group that showed to him. The boy is so smart. He could answer us by telling us the names of those objects correctly and fast. From here, I summarize that as Jean Piaget mentioned in his theory, in the age between 7 to 12 years, kids could recognizes and remember some of the features of an object like how the child could recognizes the identify the word which are different from other. Our last activity for cognitive development is to draw and identify the shapes. The purpose of this activity is to know whether she is able to grasp symbol. As a result, this smart girl managed to draw some shape like round, triangle and square and she also able to name all those shape that she has drawn. This also stated in Jean Piagets theory whereas the kids start being able to grasp symbols and also gradually develops use of language and ability to think in symbolic form. After we gave the kid to take a break first, we moved on our next activities which was relating to childs language development. Our first language activity was nursery rhymes where we asked her to sing a nursery rhyme for us. Farah managed to sing a popular song entitled, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Even though she almost forgot the lyrics, I was so surprised to hear her lovely voice sang that song and she able to finish singing the song. I could say that Jean Piaget theory is accurate because he said that whenever we teach a nursery rhyme, they are able to remember it. He added that they do not just remember music easily but they could not get it out of their minds because it is so omnipresent.

Next activity for childs language development is relating to the alphabet. For this activity, the child required to write and identify the alphabet. The purpose of this activity is to analyse whether a child could write and identify the alphabets and numbers. As for the result, this smart child not even could write all the alphabets but she is also able to read the alphabet for us. From here, I summarize that as Jean Piaget mentioned in his theory childrens language in preoperational stage can makes rapid progress where it shows the capacity to use language like how the child managed to say out the alphabets and numbers. So, I think that his perceptions on his theory are accurate. Finally, our last activity for that day was classifying the colours. For this activity, we asked her to divide colours according to the group of colours and she managed to classify all those colours. Through this activity, we managed to know that a child can classify whatever things by knowing their features. From here we can say that, Jean Piagets theory validate that kids can classify objects by a single feature. Based on all of the activities that we have been carried out with this kid, we could say that all the perceptions in Jean Piagets theory are accurate. After gathering information that I needed, I started to write report and I realized that it was interesting as I had expected because through this observation I knew how amazing the development of a child is. This is not only happened to the child that we have observed but this development also will occur to our future students that we will be taught one day. After completing this assignment, I came to realize the importance of knowing the activities that suitable for childs abilities. Their abilities are different according to their preoperational stages. In the process of this assignment, I must say that my interpersonal skill has been indeed improved because during the interview with the teacher and the headmistress I really talked and communicated a lot. I also learnt to be patient. I started to notice that I cannot get all I want. Sometimes if I want something I must worked for it. For example before carried out the activities, we waited quite long until the kindergarten was opened. Other than that, I also realised that I should not give up easily when I am pursuing something. For example, during the process of this assignment, I have to be tolerate with the kids since I found that they hard to accept our opinion which oppose their opinion on anything. Based on Jean Piagets theory, at this stage their thinking is still egocentric where they have difficulty taking the viewpoint of others. As a future teacher, I should be patient and

get used to it since one day I will meet various types of kids. I should know how to handle them and interact with them. I could say that after carrying these activities, I gained my confidence to interact with kid. Before this, I did not feel confident and I scare with the kids for their behaviour. Besides that, I also impressed with our group cooperation. They are very cooperative even though all of us quite busy with other assignment but we managed to do all these works together. We divided our works equally and none of us get extra work. Everyone has finished their jobs at right time. Even though all of us went back for our School Based Experience at our own hometown, we managed to keep in touch with each other in order to finish this coursework successfully. This assignment also helps me to understand better about the child development as well as the Jean Piagets theory. I am quite surprise when all the activities that we have been carried out have proof that Jean Piagets theory is accurate. I also found that this subject is fun and more interesting if we experience by ourselves. As a conclusion, this assignment really helped me a lot and I really enjoyed in the process of completing this assignment. It also giving me a chance to learn some new lessons and working with new people that I never work with. I hope the knowledge that I got from this assignment not only help me in the examination but also guiding me to be a good future teacher. -1557-
