have been countless stories about dragons, unicorns and other mythical creatures. Some myths are about beautiful sirens that pull sailors to their deaths with the ir haunting songs. Others are about brave men killing dragons who watch over priceless treasures. Then there are those about the unicorn with its white coat and its magical horn. In the Mediterranean and the Middle East there are other stories of griffins wit h the sight and speed of eagles and whose job it was to protect riches. Each and every country in the world has its own set of myths that have been pass ed down from generation to generation and which continue to be popular with chil dren and adults today. Some mythical creatures were immune to any poison. Ancient Greek gods were immortal. In Greek mythology the Sphinx would kill those who could not solve her riddle. The Hydra's nine heads were attached to a long neck. Giants were feared by people because they were cruel and mean creatures. The Sirens would sing songs tricking sailors into steering their ships to rocks. Some people were shaking with fear as the giant entered the village. The sailors tapped their feet in time to the music of the Sirens. As the children approached the cave, the dragon frowned. Thunder rumbled over the dark forests and mountains. Almost every Swede knows the St. Lucia song by heart. There are many St. Lucia songs but the most popular one goes like this. 'Too fast,' screamed Jake as they followed a bend in the river. 'We're going too fast!'

Just then, there was a loud cracking sound as the canoe hit a huge boulder at th e side of the river, throwing the two boys out into the freezing water. Seconds later, frantically trying to keep their heads above water, they struggle d towards the nearby bank, their clothes becoming heavier and heavier. Fortunately for them, one of the locals happened to spot them as he was passing and yelled to them to grab the long, heavy branch he was holding out for them. Within minutes, the two boys were lying exhausted on the riverbank. 'This is certainly one adventure we are not likely to forget for a very long tim e!' said Jake.
