FOOD and TRANSPORT

Nowadays, we can find food in our supermarkets from around the world, indistinctly the season it is. You dont need to wait until summer to eat melon or cherries because you can find it everywhere, and this is because of the globalization. Globalization has made real to find certain food you wouldnt find in your country because of the weather, the season or country. We can see the example of the tropical fruit, thats grown in tropical countries but we can find it in all supermarkets in the word. Where does our food come from? Spain is a great exporter of fruit and vegs. It is the 3rd in the world exporting, so it isnt rare to find Spanish products in your markets. Spain has good weather conditions to grow a great variety of products and it provides Spain also. Children from Centcelles School have made an expedition to the supermarket to see what other products from different countries we can find, and they have found them!!

What food is grown in the local country? There is a great variety of food grown in Catalonia and all used in the Mediterranean cuisine. Basic ingredients. Condiments: olive oil, red pepper, saffron, almonds, hazelnuts, rosemary, cinnamon Vegetables: tomatoes, onion, potatoes, aubergines, pumpkin, carrot, artichoke, chard, courgette and calot.

Legumes: lentils, beans, chickpeas, broad beans. Cereals: rice, flour and semolina. Fruit: oranges, lemon, grape, peaches, pears, cherries and medlars.

Fish: eels, tuna fish, anchovy, cod, prawn and all kind of sea food. Meat: pork, lamb, chicken, hen, duck and rabbit. Other: mushrooms and truffles.

Transport of food. In world we live we can find products we deserve. Aliments can be produced in other countries but thanks to transport we can find it in our supermarkets. Aliments arrive at our markets in special vehicles that have the capacity to keep its properties, such as refrigerator vans, trains, lorries and boats, which previously have been properly packaged for consume and travel from country to country. Once arrive in each country are destined to other companies that dispatch them to different supermarkets. Nowadays farmers arent happy with this process because waste money because of this intermediary process and creates war of prices. Because of it, in lots of autonomous communities, farmers are creating small food and agriculture cooperatives which prepare, package and sell their products directly to the markets or consumer.
