Recovery

Purpose of Drill: To teach proper balance, recovery, and changing of hands with the football while running. Drill: Setup three cones in the shape of a triangle, at five-yard increments. RBs (with footballs) position themselves five yards from the first cone, starting in line with the second cone On command, the first RB runs speed to the first cone with the ball in his right hand. At the cone, he taps the turf twice with the palm of his left hand. The RB gathers, switches the ball to his left hand, and runs at speed toward the second cone. At the cone, he taps the turf twice with the palm of his right hand. The RB gathers himself, switches the ball to his right hand, and repeats the process at the third and final cone. The RB gathers and finishes with a five-yard sprint. Key Points: Carry the football with three pressure points: rib cage, forearm, and hand. When changing hands, the RB must keep the ball in contact with his abdomen. Touch the turf with the palm of the off-hand, not just the fingers. After each exchange , the RB must keep the proper ball-carrying technique.

QB Shuffle
Purpose of Drill: To teach the QB proper technique in avoiding the pass rush and resetting his feet to make an accurate throw. Drill: The QB takes the snap from a coach, then take a five-step drop. Align two players two yards behind the QB and eight yards apart to rush the passer in different predetermined lanes force the QB to step up or roll out. Align three receivers 8-10 yards downfield. The rushers wait to move until the QB gets behind them. The QB sets his feet in the pocket, then correctly avoids the rush by stepping up in the pocket or shuffling outside. After avoiding the rush, the QB sets his feet and throws to the closest receiver. Coaching Points: Keep a close eye on the QBs initial set-up. Stress ball security while the QB avoids the rush. Observe the QB closely for proper technique, especially when resetting his feet.

Coach

Score Tackling
Purpose of Drill: To teach linebacker movement and direction change before making a tackle. Drill: Place 5 bags on the ground, two yards apart, parallel to each other. Ball carriers and LBs align on opposite sides of the middle bag. Ball carrier begins the drill by running back-and-forth between the outside bags. The LB mirrors the ball carriers movements. On the coachs command of score, the ball carrier runs up the nearest alley between two of the bags and attempts to get across to the LBs side. The LB reacts by filling the hole to tackle the ball carrier. He squares up, attacks, and drives the ball carrier back. Coaching Points: Ball carrier has the option to fake the LB while running between the bags. LB keeps his feet moving laterally to square up with the ball carrier. LB learns to change direction based on the ball carriers tempo.
