MAP is an arts centre based in Leeds that offers young people access to art and music courses and opportunities ranging from experience in graphics and illustration through to lyric writing and music production. Our courses are designed to engage learners through both individual and group projects, and as a local authority approved provider there are a range of qualifications available to suit individual learners. All learners are supported in return to mainstream education, by returning to school, or progressing to further education. We work with students to focus on developing the skills to support them in reaching their full potential. By providing a structured yet relaxed environment we have repeatedly seen learners at MAP achieving the accredited qualifications that not only enable progression but also help build confidence in students academic potential.
MAP Team
MAP staff have many years experience working within their fields in the arts, and also with engaging young people who present a range of issues, from persistent non-attendance to emotional and behavioral disorders.
MAP invests time in setting up good channels of communication because it repeatedly yields results in many aspects of a young persons development. MAP can support the referring agency in this communications role, from maintaining links with parents, carers and family, right through to organisations such as the youth offending service and social services.
MAP Gallery
Next door to the MAP education project there is a gallery space that provides MAP students with a place to show their work to their family, peers & teachers. This is a great opportunity and really adds value to the experience of studying at MAP. The same gallery space is used by other artists at different stages of development to exhibit their work (from Leeds College of Art & Design, right through to the European Arts Academy), and MAP students have an opportunity to interact with these exhibitions, the artists who put them on, and meet tutors from other organisations such as university lecturers - great for raising aspirations.
Measuring Success
In the 2011-2012 academic year MAP students worked really well toward their qualification with 86% achieving their NOCN Step-Up qualifications, 93% for ASDAN, and the Bronze Arts Award group saw a stunning 100% achievement rate. These achievement rates are coupled with course retention rates of over 90%, and an average attendance of 76.3%. Plus the portfolios the students at MAP have developed impressed tutors from Leeds College of music and Leeds College of Art, and alongside accredited qualifications this is also a useful element enabling progression.
