Discuss the application of rheostatic braking as applied to a series a.c induction motor drive with a neat diagram. 5. a) Discuss the various factors influencing the selection of a drive motor for a particular industrial application. b) Discuss the various methods of controlling the speed of 3-Phase induction motors. 6. a) Compare the merits and demerits of filament lamps and fluorescent lamps. b) A work shop measures 15m36m and 20 lamps of 500W each are used for lighting the workshop. The luminous efficiency of lamp is 15 Lumens/Watt. Determine the illumination on the working plane, if the depreciation factor is 0.7 and the coefficient of utilization is 0.5. 7. a) Discuss the advantages of electric traction over other non-electrical systems of traction. b) Explain briefly the factors influencing the selection of a particular traction system. 8. The average speed of a train is 50 kmph. Calculate the number of lamps required to illuminate the whole area if the lumen output of the lamp selected is 3000 lumens. b) Explain the various factors influencing the life of a tungsten filament. 8. A train is to run between two stations 2 Km apart at an average speed of 45 kmph. The run is to be made according to a quadrilateral N-T curve. The maximum speed is to be limited to 60 kmph, acceleration to 2 kmphps, coasting retardation to 0.15 kmphps and braking retardation to 3.0 kmphps . 1. (a) Compare the advantages and disadvantages of guided optical communication links with that of co-axial and microwave systems. (b) Calculate the number of modes at 820 nm in a graded index ber having parabolic index prole, a 25 m core-radius, n1 = 1.48 and n2 = 1.46. How does it compare to a step index ber? [8+8] 2. (a) Explain birefringence in single mode step index bers. (b) Consider an optical ber with n1 = 1.465, n2 = 1.46 and a = 4 m. Determine the wavelength at which all modes except the HE11 mode are cut o. [8+8] 3. (a) What is pulse broadening? Analyze pulse broadening in a graded index wave guide. (b) A certain optical ber has attenuation of 3.5 dB/ Km at 850 nm. If 0.5 mw of optical ber is initially launched in to the ber, what is the power level in mw after 4Km? [8+8] 4. (a) A step index ber has a core refractive index of 1.5 and a core diameter of 50 m. The ber is jointed with a lateral misalignment between the core axes of 5 m. Estimate the insertion loss at the joint due to the lateral misalignment assuming uniform distribution of power between all guided modes when: i. There is a small air gap at the joint ii. (b) Dierentiate between Lambertian and monochromatic optical sources in terms of power coupling into a single mode ber. (c) What is equilibrium numerical aperture? Mention the principle behind this method. (c) Output of a PIN detector preamplier of an optical receiver for 1.6Km ber is 2.26 Volts at 820nm wavelength. The output of PIN preamplier increases to 9.06 Volts when this ber is cutback to 4m length at the same wavelength.
