Project Unify Gives Special Needs Kids Chance To Shine

By Rob Novit Nick Keenan took the basketball and raced down the court at LBC Middle School on Tuesday, February 19th in his wheelchair. He would get a shot off and make it or not he got applause and cheers of appreciation during the game. Nick enjoyed this opportunity through a program called Project Unify. He is a special needs student of teacher Allison Newbegin, who hosted the inclusion contest with special needs children from Aiken Middle School and Paul Knox Middle School. But there was so much more. Other students from the three schools served as buddies and mentors. Alex Johnson was among several students to push Nick up and down the court. Its fun, Alex said. I like hanging out with everybody here. Project Unify is sponsored throughout the state by the S.C. Special Olympics. In Aiken County, the program started at Midland Valley High School and has spread to other county high schools. Teachers invited some of the middle schools to attend an inclusion football game at Silver Bluff High School last month. Newbegin brought some of her students and their buddies; by then she had already started planning the LBC tournament. She has been

Healthy You, Healthy Graniteville Event

Since 2011, the RISE (Restoration in Graniteville through Supportive Engagement) Project Team has assessed the long-term health needs of the Graniteville community and its surrounding areas funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to the University of South Carolina. The goal of the project was to determine how the health, quality of life, and access to healthcare services have been affected since the train disaster in 2005. The RISE Project is composed of a team of researchers and community leaders, and for the past two years, we have gathered a variety of information from residents of the community, local healthcare professionals, and health data. As the project comes to a close, we are planning an event at the Family Y in Graniteville on May 4th to share what we have learned and to discuss ways to keep the citizens of Graniteville and surrounding areas healthy in the years to come. The Healthy You, Healthy Graniteville event will be held Saturday, May 4, 2013, 10:00 am 1:00 pm at the Family Y in Graniteville and will include activities for children, refreshments and door prizes/ giveaways. Please feel free to contact the RISE Project with any questions or concerns at carlos@email. sc.edu or Tina Bevington at 803349-6143 or Louisiana Wright Sanders at 803-221-6976.

amazed by her schools response. Other teachers brought their students to the gym to provide support. Our Buddy Club has stepped up and helped my kids practice, Newbegin said. Our Ambassador Club is an actual class, and they made all the posters for us and the other schools. My kids have been so excited. They knew it was a tournament and said, Were going to beat those other schools. Mike Epps, LBCs basketball coach and physical education teacher, said his wife has brought their daughter Carrie to all his games. This event was emotional for Epps, as Carrie is one of Newbegins students. He helped plan the event and served as the referee for the first half. For the first time, he watched his daughter get a chance to play basketball on

that court. Its great for Carrie and all these kids, Epps said. They look at all the others cheering for them, and those are students they think are superkids. Esmerelda Cortez has one buddy, Megan OBanion. Yet, at the football game last month, Meagan and three other classmates hung out with her the entire time. They did so again Tuesday. Ezzie is leaving (to go to Midland Valley) next year, Megan said. Im really sad about that. Aiken Middle teacher Eszter Mad-Szabo was delighted to bring her students to LBC. Its important for us to come out and be together, she said. Everybody can see that these kids can have just as much fun as other kids.

Keeping You Informed

The Senate is in session for 2013. I hope that you find this update helpful and informative. If I can help you with an issue, please let me know. Economic Investment in Graniteville: On February 20, state and local officials announced that Recleim, a start-up recycler of appliances and e-waste materials, will establish its first recycling plant in Graniteville in the former Hickman Mill. The total project is a $40.6 Million investment that is expected to generate 200 new jobs. This is wonderful news for Graniteville, Warrenville, and the surrounding communities! Non-Profit Raffles: The State Constitution prohibits raffles. Nevertheless, many non-profits wish to hold raffles as a way to raise funds. After several years of work, representatives from non-profits, religious groups, law enforcement, and the Palmetto Family Council finally came to a consensus on legislation to change current South Carolina law that will allow schools, churches and other nonprofits to hold raffles. The full Senate gave second reading to legislation on February 14. Because the legislation involves a constitutional change, there are two bills. S.213 establishes the qualifications for a nonprofit to conduct a raffle for charitable purposes, while S.239 is a constitutional amendment that allows South Carolina voters to decide if they would like charitable raffles to be available to nonprofits. The constitutional question would be on the ballot in 2014, and ratified by the General

by SC Rep. Tom Young, R-District 81

Assembly in 2015. If approved by the House of Representatives and the voting public in 2014, the first raffles will be legally held in 2015. Education Oversight Annual Report & Third Grade Reading: In mid-February, the States Education Oversight Committee released its annual report. South Carolina has a 2020 Vision to reach certain milestones with educating students for success in the global economy. The annual report is troubling as acknowledged by the Committee. For example, the states progress in reading proficiency is flat with little gains over the past 4 years. Also, only 74.9% of high school students statewide are graduating in four years. Further, the state still has 61 public schools rated At Risk based on poor student achievement. In a very detailed analysis, the Committee recommends that state law should require third graders to read at grade level or not be promoted unless certain exceptions are met. Retained third graders would be placed in a reading intensive program. Such a change would fall in line with other states including North Carolina which passed a similar law last year. High School Dropout/Driving Bill: On February 28, the Senate Education K-12 subcommittee deadlocked 3-3 on whether to provide a favorable report to the high school dropout/no drive until 18 bill this past Thursday. I am the primary sponsor. The bill still has a chance to win approval and advance to the full Senate later this month when it comes up to the

full Education Committee. Concealed Weapons Permit: In late February, the Senate Judiciary Committee passed legislation (S.308) allowing concealed weapons permit (CWP) holders to carry their handgun into a restaurant which serves alcohol as long as the permit holder does not consume any alcohol while there. Restaurants have the option to post a sign not allowing concealable weapons on the premises; if that is done, then CWP holders cannot carry legally into such restaurants. The bill has stiff penalties for violating and a zero tolerance threshold for alcohol consumption. I voted in favor. The full Senate now has the bill. Restructuring Elimination of Budget and Control Board: On February 20, the full Senate passed legislation (S. 22) creating the Department of Administration. There was substantial debate over moving procurement to the Department of Administration under the Governor or placing procurement with a newly created State Fiscal Accountability Authority composed of the Governor, Comptroller General, Treasurer, Ways and Means Chairman, and Senate Finance Chairman. By a vote of 27-18, the Senate refused to place procurement under the Department of Administration. I voted in favor of putting procurement under the Department of Administration. State Exports Good News!: South Carolinas exports reached a record $25.3 Billion in goods sold in 2012. Our state ranks first among the 50 states in tire exports. Canada, Germany, and China are the top export markets for all products. Cyber Attack Deadline Extended: South Carolina taxpayers affected by the information security data breach at the South Carolina Department of Revenue now have until March 31, 2013, to sign up for a year of free credit monitoring and unlimited

itself. According to most surveys, facts, and figures for the last sixty years No you have not! Or, at least, 98% of those of you actually reading this column right now have not. I was just talking with a pastor last week that told me local church traditions trumps what the Bible says 95% of the time. In one of the surveys I do in Outreach Training asks, If you could design the ideal church for you what would it look like? Do you know that lost people have a better handle on church than professing believers? They talk about acceptance, understanding, and the love of Jesus. Never buildings and rarely style of music. THE DEMON MAMMON Luk 16:9 And I say to you, Make to yourselves friends by the unrighteous mammon, that when it fails they may take you into the eternal dwellings. Luk 16:10 He faithful in the least is also faithful in much. And he unrighteous in the least is also unrighteous in much. Luk 16:11 Then if you were not faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will entrust the true to you? Luk 16:12 And if you were not faithful in that of another, who will give to you that which is yours? Luk 16:13 No servant is able to serve two lords; for either he will hate the one, and he will love the other; or he will cling to one, and he will despise the other. You are unable to serve God and mammon. The devil has told another lie to believers. We are told that money in itself is not evil. Its all in how you use it. Yet churches and individuals continue to fill their barns [bank accounts, 401ks, stocks, etc., etc.] with money while the world around us goes to hell. Jesus spoke of the god Mammon. Note the little g or demon. No doubt we are to provide for our families. And, if we all truly followed the Biblical model of stewardship there would be no homeless, or hungry, or needy except for those that chose to be so. Biblical stewardship is a whole nuther message. Today we just want to ask: Who do you serve? No matter what you may say publically or however you justify your actions, deep down inside, you know the truth. God or Mammon? MATERIALISM Ever seen the bumper sticker, He who dies with the most toys wins.? Cars, boats, campers, lake houses, mountain houses In excess, I could go on and on. Anything. Anything that comes before our Jesus is an idol! Jesus said that He was the Way, the Truth, and the Life and that no one comes to the Father except through Him. Toys do not make us winners! WHAT ABOUT THOSE MESSAGES ON HOPE? Jesus is the answer. No matter what the question. Jesus is the answer. Jesus is our hope, even when we walk through those deep, dark valleys of life. Jesus is our hope on those mountain top experiences as well as in the valleys. I cant say it enough. Jesus is our hope. Not the President or Republicans or Democrats or Libertarians or Jesus is the answer. No matter what the question. Jesus is the answer. Jesus is our hope, even when we walk through those deep, dark valleys of life. Jesus is our hope on those mountain top experiences as well as in the valleys. Remember, Jesus is the answer. Worthless Idols
By Dr. Lynn Kirkland Jon 2:8 Those who worship worthless idols have abandoned their loyalty to you. Jon 2:9 But I will sing praises to you; I will offer you a sacrifice and do what I have promised. Salvation comes from the LORD! In this day and age of undocumented access to knowledge have believers in the Good News of Jesus Christ actually turned to worthless idols. If so what might some of those idols be. TRADITIONS OF MEN Isa 29:13 The Lord said, These people claim to worship me, but their words are meaningless, and their hearts are somewhere else. Their religion is nothing but human rules and traditions, which they have simply memorized. A friend of mine recently said, as we were practicing our music for worship service that until he started actually reading the words of the music in order to learn the chord changes that he did not know how beautiful and meaningful many songs are. He went on to say that many were just memorized tunes that he knew all too well. How many times have you looked at the church bulletin to see what the last song was that you sung? You really thought I was going to lay into the more liturgical denominations here didnt you? Sorry, but I know up close and personal the many horror stories of pastors having to leave churches because a vase was moved, or shrub cut down. I know stories of certain songs not being sung on a particular Sunday and the Pastor eventually left because of it. Bulletins. No bulletins. Style of music. Volume of music. Order of service... I could go on and on. Are these things really important? What about your next door neighbor with the live in girl friend Do they know Jesus? What about the people you work with everyday? Have you ever prayed for an opportunity to share your faith in Jesus Christ with them? Have you taken advantage of that opportunity when it presented

Andrea Fulfilling dreams with the Peace Corps in gambia

By Rob Novit Byrd Elementary School teachers recently were asked to remain after school for a workshop. That turned to be a friendly trick by principal russell gunter and first-grade teacher Jodia Lintner. To the faculty members surprise and delight, when Lintner adjusted a screen, their former colleague Sarah Andrea was speaking to them via the Internet through Skype. For the past five months, Andrea has lived in The Gambia as a Peace Corps volunteer and will remain there well into 2014. The Byrd teachers cheered and waved a lot, grateful for the chance to see their friend. Andreas assignment is to train teachers. She wrote in a letter to many friends that she and another volunteer, Jo-Jo, concentrated on read-alouds to help the teachers become more prepared for teaching content and implementing literacy in math, science and social studies. Sarah taught at Byrd Elementary School for several years after college. Then she embarked on this life-changing mission that resulted in moving to the West African country for 27 months. Why did she do it? In her first letter to friends and family months ago, Andrea described her fulfilling life in Aiken, but said she felt the need to make a change. After some research, Andrea decided that the Peace Corps was the best choice. There would be other volunteers and staffers who could help her get through the transition process. During her training, Andrea worked on learning Pulaar, the most prevalent language in The Gambia. Her monthly updates since her arrival are filled with information and moving stories in detail that one might expect from a dedicated teacher. She lives in the village of Koba Kundo, which has no electricity or running water. The residents rely on a communal tap, and Andrea has learned to carry water on her head. Andrea was charmed by a

naming ceremony in the village, which usually is held seven days after a babys birth. This time, the volunteers were given their own ceremony. Her host sister, Maimuna, asked Andrea to wear her own wedding outfit which Andrea describes as a Disney-like bubble gum pink top, with the skirt embellished with flowers, sequins and more. Her Gambian name is Sira Bah, named after her host mother. All the children call out Sira when she walks out her door. Gambia has made some strides to move toward modernization. Still, those in the rural areas like Koba Kundu have limitations theyre trying to overcome.
