CIVILISATIONS
The Alliance of Civilizations Forum will be an action-driven event which will provide
participants with a unique international platform to develop joint initiatives and forge
partnerships. In addition to high-level debates about emerging trends in relations
between diverse cultures and religions, the Forum will feature announcements of new
initiatives and project-specific working sessions. It will also provide a convening space
for government agencies, international organizations and civil society bodies working in
the area of intercultural and interreligious engagement to share lessons on best practices
and develop joint work platforms.

Background
The prediction that secularism would sweep the world has been confounded in recent
years as religion has left the place assigned to it (by theories of modernity) in the private
sphere and thrust itself into the public arena. What are the social and political
implications of religion assuming such prominent and contested public and political
roles? Some observers, including many feminists, see incompatibilities between
democracy, human rights and gender equality, on the one hand, and a world in which
religious issues and organizations have an active presence in public affairs, on the other.
Others, however, argue that religion (at its best) can act as a significant counterweight to
the otherwise hegemonic institutions of the state and the market, revitalizing public
debate on their moral underpinnings and their social outcomes. The task of research,
therefore, is to develop analytical and normative criteria to differentiate between the
various forms of public religion and their social and political consequences, including
the implications for gender equality.
5
society, which can include the nature of ―society‖ itself. This is very important because it
can explain resistance, or absence of pressures, from below to pluralize and democratize
religion.
This project raises two key questions: first, how can religion and politics become
intertwined? Are there distinct modes of insertion in different settings? And second, what
are the social and political effects, especially from a gender perspective, of this blending
of religion and politics? When is it likely to pose a danger to modern normative
structures associated with gender equality and democracy?
Progress
The UNRISD Project Proposal has been completed and funding is being secured. An
UNRISD/UNIFEM joint proposal has been prepared for three of the countries (Poland,
Serbia and Turkey); an Expert Group Meeting to discuss the research questions and the
proposed studies took place in Bratislava on 28 February 2007. Suitable researchers for
these three country studies are now being identified and a call for papers has been posted
on the website of the UNIFEM Regional Office for Central and Eastern Europe.

Four hundred years ago, Galileo gazed at the stars for the very first time through a
telescope. In celebration of the first use of this ground-breaking invention, the United
Nations proclaimed 2009 the International Year of Astronomy (IYA 2009) and designated
UNESCO as its lead agency. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) will act as
implementing body.

UNICEF
NEW YORK, 1 January 2008 – UNICEF today officially welcomed the first day of the
International Year of Sanitation 2008. The international year aims to highlight the need
for urgent action on behalf of the more than 40 per cent of the world’s population who
continue to live without improved sanitation.
Lack of proper sanitation contributes to the deaths of thousands of women and children
every day from largely preventable causes, including diarrhoeal diseases. Though more
than 1.2 billion people worldwide have gained access to improved sanitation between
1990 and 2004, an estimated 2.6 billion people -- including 980 million children – have
yet to be reached. This is one of the single biggest development challenges facing the
world today.
The International Year of Sanitation 2008 was established by the United Nations General
Assembly in December 2006 to accelerate progress towards meeting the Millennium
Development Goal target of reducing by half the proportion of people living without
access to improved sanitation by 2015. In addition, progress on sanitation will contribute
to the achievement of all the Millennium Development Goals.
Improved sanitation includes clean, safe toilets, wastewater management and hygiene
promotion, all of which prevent the transfer of pathogens in human excreta. When not
treated safely, it adversely impacts health, often deprives children of getting an
education, and impedes social and economic development. Lack of improved sanitation
in schools is an important underlying factor in absenteeism and poor classroom
8
performance due to illness, low enrolment and early school dropout, especially for girls
whose parents may remove them from the education system when they start menstruating.
Lack of toilets exposes women and girls to violence and abuse as some are only able to
defecate only after nightfall and in secluded areas. Proper sanitation, including
handwashing with soap, averts the spread of diarrhoeal disease, which is the second
biggest killer of children under five. Improving sanitation leads to improved health,
dignity, social and economic development, protects the environment and helps people
break the cycle of poverty.

2 January 2008 -- This month's edition of the Bulletin of the World Health Organization
focuses on water safety and its role in public health. The authors of the articles examine
why the health sector relies on water safety; calculate the cost of achieving target 10
(water supply and sanitation) of the Millennium Development Goals; and ask why
drinking water in Bangladesh is still contaminated with arsenic.

aujourd'hui à New York.

OMM / WMO
―There is a major societal need to further develop the capacity of satellites to monitor
even more accurately climate and weather,‖ UN World Meteorological Organization
(WMO) Secretary-General Michel Jarraud said in a news release ahead of his agency’s
annual Consultative Meetings on High-level Policy on Satellite Matters in New Orleans
on 15–16 January.
10
At least 16 geostationary and low-earth orbit satellites currently provide operational
data on the planet’s climate and weather as part of the WMO Global Observing System
(GOS). They are complemented by numerous experimental satellites designed for
scientific missions or instrument technology demonstration. A record number of 17
satellites are planned for launch this year to further strengthen the system’s work.

Allan Weinstein made the trip to New York yesterday and gave the certified copy of the
original document to Mr. Ban.
The Secretary-General made the request to Dr. Weinstein last October when he saw the
original document at the National Archives – designated by the Charter itself to be its
custodian – during an official trip to Washington, UN spokesperson Michele Montas told
reporters.
―Each of the 51 signatories has a certified copy,‖ she noted. ―The Organization itself
now has one.‖

11 janvier 2008 –
