Cameron Tate 1 Workshop Draft The Student Union Shannons comments/ Mariahs comments The figured world my group

decided to observe was The Student Union (You could add why we chose the union for the place we observed. MM). Like any other building on campus, the union has basic rules that everyone is expected to abide by. Things like yelling and running would be frowned upon in this environment. (I would add why this is frowned upon in this particular figured world) The Student Union is a place for students to get food, study, or hang out with friends. When talking, a reasonable conversation tone is acceptable (you could add why this tone is accepted over other tones MM). Expect to see many different artifacts and actors in this figured world. (I think that starting the sentence with expect, makes the sentence sound a bit choppy. I suggest saying something like: one would expect) (What kind of different actors are seen in this figured world? MM) Some very common artifacts are book bags, cell phones, headphones, books, and food. (Expand on this idea, what are some ideas that we observed? Schools- place for students to gather) The amount of people with each item will vary throughout the day. For instance, there will be more book bags in the morning than there will be around 5:00pm. This is because peoples reasons for being in the union change at different times. (This is a good observation that I didnt think of) Some may be passing through to go to class and then come back later to get food or see a movie. Depending on the time of day or the certain discourse community, people may act in different ways while in the union (Why do you think that people act in different ways during different times? MM). In the morning most people are quiet and just trying to make it to class. There will be a line at Starbucks and a lot of people carrying book bags. As the day progresses, at around noon people are more talkative and active. Some people may be lounging or studying. Different school organizations put up tables for different events and causes(you could also maybe add how many people are attracted towards those tables MM). On into the evening, there are more groups of people hanging out in the union. Lines to get into crown or Wendys get longer as people are getting lunch or dinner. Overall, The Student Union is a good common area for students throughout the day. (I suggest adding how the different discourse communities interact within the figured world)

Observation 1 (Feb. 4) 2:00pm 2:30pm Groups of people sitting and talking. (Where are they sitting and talking? MM) Short line at Wendys Very few people passing through to go to class because it just started. o Artifacts: Book bags, cellphones, and food. (I would definitely add some more comments such as the little boy crying with his dad, there was a group of girls chatting, many people listening to music, and people eating which is not always acceptable in all figured worlds.)

Cameron Tate 2 Workshop Draft Observation 2 (Feb. 5) 12:00 Today in the union, the Chancellor was giving a speech in the center. This made it much more crowded than usual. They were handing out food to people sitting and listening to the Chancellor (You could add detail about who was handing out food. MM) There were more adults than usual because of the event. They were taking notes on what the Chancellor said. (I would add artifacts that were seen. For example, the speakers, the microphone, the chancellors podium, and all the staff that was there at the time.) The Union was quiet except for the speakers and people asking questions. The few students who were there were either studying, listening to music, or waiting on friends. Groups of people would pass through the union to get coffee or travel to and from class.

Observation 3 (Feb. 6) 5:00pm Today in the union, traffic was low and most people were eating. This was probably because most students are done with class before 5:00pm. The noise level was moderate. Mostly people talking in small groups. (You could add what some of the people were doing that was sitting around. MM) (What were the people doing?) Starbucks had fewer customers because of time of day. (How does this affect the amount of traffic that comes in and out of the union in that area? MM) At around 5:20 we interviewed a girl named Jaleah. o Jaleahs purpose for going to the union on a daily basis is to get food, socialize with friends, or see a movie. o A few items which she is sure to bring to the union are her student ID to get food or see a movie, her phone, and either her purse or book bag (depending on the time of day). o Jaleahs behavior in the union is normally fun and comical, but not too loud or distracting. o She usually goes to the union with teammates (expand on the idea of different sports teams and clubs meeting in the Union) and classmates.
