AN-NISA (Empowering Women through knowledge and spirituality)

Bismillahir rahma nirrahim Read in the name of your Lord who created created man out of a clot of congealed blood. Read and your Lord is most bountiful... (96:1-3)
Amina Adjiet Chairperson of An-Nisa

As Salamu Alaykum Dear Readers Muharram Mubarak to all of you and a Big warm Welcome to a New Year, A Newsletter and a New Direction for AnNisa!
Alhamdullilah, I pray that the introduction of this newsletter, will Insha-Allah with your duas, support and guidance of our beloved Shaykh Yusuf da Costa and Allahs (SBUH) limitless Love, Mercy and Power, help us all in strengthening An-Nisas vision to empower women through knowledge and spirituality.

We live in an age of information, where reading has become extremely necessary and we have to urgently look at ways to encourage and promote reading in order to face this critical challenge, not for Muslim women only, but all of humanity. I must confess, that I felt like a minute grain of sand, after studying the records of An-Nisa these past few weeks. How will I ever be able to do justice to what has been accomplished in such a short period of time? I asked myself. I read the minutes of so many meetings, the information about functions held in the past, etc. but nowhere amongst the pages, could I find details of the many hours of sacrifice, the energies and dedication, the loving hands of support, the selflessness, the generosity and most importantly the ceaseless commitment to improving the lives of others. And so, I cannot embark on this journey, this new chapter, without saying A VERY BIG SHUKRAN to all of you, for being there for An-Nisa, for being An-Nisa. I promise to constantly remind myself that only through the continued joint commitment and sincere endeavours to lead more meaningful lives, will the women of An-Nisa continue to define, shape and strengthen Naqshbandi Muhammadi SA. All women of course, do have the potential to define, shape and strengthen bonds with other women and the rest of humanity - millions have succeeded in their humble efforts, despite facing a multitude of obstacles. I know too, that none of you expect any form of acknowledgement, but allow me to at least just this once, express my gratitude it was indeed a privilege to read about all your efforts. I will try my best not to fail you, but ask that you bear with me, help me face this challenge. I

AN-NISA | THE REVIVAL OF THE TRUE ESSENCE OF A MUSLIM WOMAN

have never been faced with such a mammoth challenge, never been given such an opportunity. I beg you to please help me. Join hands with me please. Our beloved Shaykh Yusuf Da Costa has given me permission to gently and slowly drive AnNisa in the following very challenging direction, namely:

The Revival of the True Essence of a Muslim Woman

Only time will tell, but for now, I strongly believe that a regular newsletter will allow us to analyse the above issue/challenge and ultimately give a voice to our thoughts, emotions, aspirations.... and with your much needed participation, strengthen our bond with each other Insha-Allah. It will of course, be a voice of gentle hearts only. I strongly believe that the revival of the true essence of all women should urgently become a universal challenge/priority and pray that our humble newsletter will be a step in this direction Insha-Allah.
"There is a force within that gives you life - Seek that. In your body there lies a priceless jewel Seek that. Oh, wandering Sufi, if you are in search of the greatest treasure, dont look outside Look within and seek that." Rumi

Allah (SBUH) placed us in each others path for a reason, to not only connect with voices in gatherings, but to connect with our hearts. And so, An-Nisa will continue to endeavour to help women reach their full potential through its emphasis on knowledge and spirituality. We must realise that we do not have a choice in this matter anymore. I believe that it is time to honour ourselves, more earnestly and more uncompromisingly. Our Shaykh has been doing this continuously in his talks, his writings and even created a platform for our voices to be heard in ladies gatherings. How many more opportunities should we be given, before we really and truly understand and appreciate ourselves, our essence? Here is yet another opportunity now, a major one, with limitless potential. Grasp it, embrace it, nurture it, it belongs to all of us! Just look at what has been achieved thus far. I believe, this newsletter will be another confirmation of your strength, courage and commitment. I know that you will not allow it to become just another newsletter because An-Nisa women (and all women who choose to tread on the path of Servanthood), have proven through their achievements, that they never accept the word just. These courageous women ask nothing in return and make daily conscious choices to grow, improve themselves and the lives of others. They appreciate and value the people they are privileged to interact with, because to them, each person (ie the hawker on the street, a neighbour, a relative, a friend, a colleague, a fellow commuter, a complete stranger, etc) is not part of her life by pure coincidence, but is another soul, also shaped by the same Divine Hand, placed in her path, a tangible invitation to touch a life and make a difference. (How subtle and gentle our Lord, with His daily gifts/grants/opportunities let us constantly remind each other of this simple fact!)
AN-NISA | THE REVIVAL OF THE TRUE ESSENCE OF A MUSLIM WOMAN 4

Let us help to remind one another of this Divine Favour and try to emulate this Perfect Example by trying to be a gift to someone, through our daily interaction, even if it means just for a few seconds - a smile, a hug, a kind word, such an extremely quick action and its effectA priceless memory (and no need to guess, it could last a lifetime too!). Remember too, that we all have different strengths and skills but together we can continue to make a difference. We can all try to be different, in the sense that we always and only compete with our own individual selves, our own individual standards, never with each other. We live in a society which encourages us to do exactly the opposite - which has conditioned us to constantly compete with each other, even at the expense of each other. We will prove through this newsletter that we do not subscribe to this very common philosophy. Women today ignore their true strength and beauty and turn to superficial means of beautifying themselves, have to spend hours in a gym, have to try the latest crazy diet, have to try the latest anti-wrinkle cream, have to turn to fashion models/film stars for role models, always keep busy with the have tos, which we choose to obey. I ask myself first, and then all of you, where does the most important aspect of our being fit in all of this madness? How are we ever going to truly know and understand ourselves if we keep on suffocating the light we all carry within ourselves.? Yes, with all these foolish demands, which we voluntarily enslave ourselves with? And so in our newsletter, we will share information, knowledge, ideas, experiences and simple survival guides to help each other rediscover our true essence. Each one of us has been created and moulded by a Divine Hand. How can we not value ourselves? How can we deny the fact that each one of us is special? An-Nisa will grow even stronger now and spread its light to those who are genuinely looking for a change, a revival. Your voices are calling on Allahs name in all corners of Cape Town, the rest of the country and many parts of a fast changing world. Now, these very same voices will confirm obedience to Allahs first Divine Instruction to:

Read! / Iqra!
We do have a channel now, to follow this Divine Instruction, a channel for our voices too. Use it, please.

Therefore, our Lord is oblivious to our outward forms but is always mindful of the states of our hearts, as the heart of each man is a throne from among the endless thrones of Allah Almighty. That heart is not the organ in our chests; it is only represented by it as a figure of speech. In your real heart, your heart of hearts there is a throne and He Almighty appears on that throne through a distinct attribute that manifests in you, and nowhere else in creation. Shaykh Nazim

Kindly also let us have your feedback/ideas for our newsletter. The most important role-players will be YOU. Your voices and support will determine the success of this newsletter Insha-Allah.

Enjoy Gentle Reader and please spread the word that there is a small newsletter with a very big heart, now doing the rounds in Cape Town and looking for the support of all women who believe that they can make a difference, who not only daily honour the Light they carry within themselves, but also the Source of that Light too! ISLAMIC HISTORY
First Discussion of the Book PAGES FROM CAPE MUSLIM HISTORY (Written by SHAYKH YUSUF DA COSTA and the late DR ACHMAT DAVIDS) by Amina Adjiet This series of short articles extracted from the abovementioned book, will form the initial basis of our Islamic History column. Please carefully read, consider and try to remember the following pearls of wisdom extracted from the introduction to this priceless book: The Muslim community of the Cape has been marginalised both racially and religiously and its contribution to the development and history of this country has been reduced by the media to Malay and Indian food recipes, gamatjie anecdotes (with Gamat being a distortion of the name of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.s), inane little songs that were originally written to entertain the slave masters (some of which subtly poke fun at Islamic levels of decorum, and Daar Kom die Aliebama), khalifah displays, and, of course, the coon carnivals and choir competitions in which they still fill the role of entertainers and jesters for the colonists. The real history of the Muslim community its struggles, its tears and sacrifices has remained hidden, and the voices of its people have been almost completed unheard. And in another paragraph, the important objective of the book is confirmed to the reader: The underlying aim of this book is to give recognition to those persons who have tried to enrich the religious life of the community. There have been others from the community who appear to have been primarily concerned with obtaining positions in the colonial ruling structures, but they have made almost no contribution to the quality of the religious life of the Muslims. They may go down in history for various reasons, but definitely not because they enhanced the Islamic development of the Muslim community. And finally too, in the same introduction to the book which was written, 16 years ago, Shaykh Yusuf expressed the following wish, which we all pray will be materialised through our efforts in this newsletter Insha-Allah: It our wish that this work will add to the resurrection of the communitys past, and that it will contribute in a very meaningful way to making their history a part of the history of all peoples of this country. Let us honour Shaykhs wish by supporting this newsletter and resurrect/revive our true essence and heritage.

LEGAL COLUMN
In this column we will be focusing on various legal issues of interest to all women. Here follows a short introduction to the Womens Legal Centre. The centre kindly (eagerly and very promptly!) offered to keep us informed : What the Womens Legal Centre Does The Centre has identified the following strategic areas in which to litigate and conduct law reform. Fair access to resources The reality about relationships is that they do not always last forever. Death is unavoidable, and sometimes people just break up. The WLC takes up cases that ensure that on dissolution of partnerships, whether by death or separation, that women receive a fair share of the assets of the partnership. This involves ensuring that all partnerships are legally recognised, irrespective of religion and custom. Being free of violence The WLC takes up cases that improve the access of women and girl children to State protection from gender based violence, particularly rape and domestic violence and increase protections for girl children from abuse in schools. Having a safe place to stay The WLC takes up cases that extend tenure to women in their own right, and to prevent loss of tenure on dissolution of relationships. Being able to work The Centre takes up cases that extend employment protections to vulnerable groups, develop the law on sexual harassment in relation to farm and domestic workers, and ensure equal opportunities in the workplace. Being well The WLC will continue to defend legal challenges to the right to makes choices around reproductive health, and to litigate to ensure that women have access to reproductive health care. Cases related to womens access to health care and the intersection between HIV/AIDS and our other strategic focus areas are also taken. In order to empower women through knowledge of their rights, the Centre also offers free legal advice to women. Women are assisted or referred to the relevant body, NGO or court for assistance. The bulk of the queries we receive involve the dissolution of partnerships, gender based violence and maintenance. ARABIC COLUMN for Women

Arabic is beautiful in many ways, from its voluminous vocabulary which gives a real richness and depth to descriptions, to its actual flowing script, which has given way to many beautiful forms and types of calligraphy. It has always held its own in the literary ladder of beautiful language. Intricate yet simple, one word has multiple meanings and when strung together in a sentence, the grammar cannot be called anything less than a symphony. (Suhaib)

MORE PEARLS OF WISDOM:

We are beings who have been endowed with the potential for uncovering a great secret within ourselves. If in heedlessness we do not strive for it, it will remain deeply hidden within ourselves. Shaykh Nazim

We must have correct attitudes. The Naqshbandis must have correct attitudes. We must be known in the community for the fact that we embrace all people. Everybody must know this about us, that the Naqshbandis embrace all people. We put our arms around all people. Shayk Yusuf

I used to love gardening. Any gardener will tell you that he cannot understand how a person who does gardening cannot believe in Allah. A dry seed that crumbles in ones hand is placed in the ground and a plant grows from it. Just looking at how plants grow tells one about the greatness of Allah. And so by studying the creation we come to see the greatness and the magnificence of Allah. These are the conclusions we draw. But we draw these conclusions in the intense privacy of our minds. We think : O Allah! Thou art greatest. If Thou had created this, how must Thee not be? And we think about that and we come to the conclusions about it in our minds and our faith intensifies, and it does so in a very private way. Shaykh Yusuf

HEALTH COLUMN AT-TIB AN NABAWEE

(HEALING WITH THE MEDICINE OF THE PROPHET) Throughout the history of mankind, man has been searching for those things which will heal his many ailments and in this column information, knowledge and wisdom in dealing with various ailments will be shared. Allah has clearly indicated to mankind that : Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon Him) you have a good example to follow, for him who hopes for Allah and the last days and remembers Allah much (33:21). Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) was sent as a guide and mercy for all of mankind, and as such was given wisdom by Allah that benefits man. Allah says O mankind There has come to you a good advice from your Lord, and a healing for that which is in your breasts, a guidance and mercy for the believers. (10:57). The Prophets medicine is not restricted to spiritual healing, in fact it balances the healing of the soul and the physical man in order to prepare him for a better life in the Hereafter. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) was a physician of the soul and body and as this newsletter will be focusing on the revival of the essence of women, we will initially be discussing health issues relevant to women: (a) dealt with in the abovementioned book by Imam Qayyim Al-Jauziyah; (b) as well as the local branches of the Ibn Sina Institute of Tibb, School of Natural Medicine (UWC) and Cape Peninsula University of Technology; and at a later stage general health issues, of interest to women will be dealt with by qualified medical practitioners.

Think about this verse in the Quran, about the Quran:

Yaa ayyuhannaasu, qad jaa-atkum mawuizwatun minr rabbikum wa shifaa-un limaa fis-sudoor (10:57).
O People, direction and admonishment and good counsel have come to you from your Lord and Master, and a cure for all that ails your hearts.

ONE WOMANS JOURNEY

By Nuraan S-Nadeem

Part One (of talk delivered on 11th November 2012) The Path that I am on today started at birth. Here I am at the feet of an illustrious Shaykh with the barakah of Allah and the prayers of my parents. My father keeps reminding me of the prayer he made when I was born. He took the afterbirth that once connected me to my blessed mother and prayed over it and buried it next to Muir street Masjied. He asked Allah that the athaan would now connect me through this chord to Allah. It took 21 years to see that prayer answered. Indicative that patience is a requirement of the Path. Something even more impressive occurred a few years later which penetrated both the hearts of my mother and me- unknowing to the other. We met a family who had a young and humble daughter and she was studying Islam abroad. I remember an image of a shy smile, a sweet lowered gaze and in full hijab. There and then the seed was planted. We both seemed to have been mesmerized by her exquisite manners and humility. So impressed my beloved mother was that she requested to have a photo of the young girl. She kept this photo with her for years in her purse and her prayer for me was that I would be like that girl or what she was representing. Today I am on the Path still praying and wishing to reach that high feminine ideal. When I reached my late teens I became increasingly aggressive in my questioning regarding my purpose in life. Through questioning the mediocre traditions and customs that had faint hints and faded traces of true of Islam, I begun to stray, a little too far away. This rebellion, which was stirred by confusion lead me further into a state of heedlessness. However, it will all serve its purpose later. I decided to finally take up reading after a long rebellion not to- hoping to find direction. Initially I didnt go out searching for reading materials. I was just lead to what we had. First, as I recall it was a simple book of Hell, by Harun Yahya- I think. Not necessarily the kind of read that I was anticipating but this is what Allah opened up for me and it struck- deep. Like all good therapy, it takes a while to be effective. And like all good therapists, Allah being the Originator of therapy, gives that process its due right without interruption and then only calls you for your next session.
