PRIORITY NOTIFICATION PN 2009-07

PNs are Proprietary to Honeywell and Honeywell Customers

PNs describe a condition that is of an immediate nature relating to loss of view, loss of control, or incorrect data. This PN is available on the Honeywell Solution Support Online Web Site, at http://www.honeywell.com/ps. Login > Support > Notifications > Experion > Process Network

AFFECTED HARDWARE PRODUCT: AFFECTED SOFTWARE RELEASE: DATE: PAR NUMBER:

Experion Honeywell Modbus TCP Firewall (HMTF) Rev A Build 1 and Rev A Build 2 March 10, 2009 1-AVC7FD

AFFECTED CUSTOMERS: All customers with Rev A HMTF devices from MTL (Measurement Technology Limited) SUBJECT: Possible loss of Modbus communication for 30 seconds ANOMALY SUMMARY: The HMTF has a firmware anomaly in Rev A which involves a log file filling memory and eventually causing a reboot of the device. The occurrence of this has been rare, and when it does happen it takes 10 20 days for it to occur. The firmware revision can be seen by opening the faceplate for the HMTF in the System Status Display. See Figure 1 and Figure 2. Figure 1 System Status Display

POTENTIAL CUSTOMER OBSERVABLE SYMPTOMS: The following 2 symptoms may be visible: The System Status Display (if configured for HMTF devices) will alarm with "MODBUS/TCP Firewall is no longer being heard by FTE". PCDI (Peer Control Data Interface) alarms for connection warning, single device fail, or primary device fail which recover in about 30 seconds. Not all units have the dropout anomaly. CAUTION: Due to the wide variety of process control equipment configurations and site-specific control strategies, it is the responsibility of each customer to assess the potential impact of this anomaly to their process & facilities. PROBABILITY OF OCCURRENCE: The probability of occurrence depends on the nature of the TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) traffic. Observations show that the first symptom may occur once per day and the second symptom may occur in 10 to 20 days of operation. Some installations may not observe either symptom. ACTIONS: If your HTMF device is at Rev A, then upgrade the firmware. The Rev B firmware is available on-line at: http://hpsweb.honeywell.com/Cultures/en-US/Support/SecurityOtherUpdates/Cisco/default.htm Follow the instructions in the Appendix to install the firmware.

Updating firmware or configuration information
Use the information in this section to update the firewall's firmware or its configuration. While you are performing an update, you can't see any device that is downstream of the Modbus TCP Firewall. Updating configuration or firmware The USB Load function loads files containing firmware or configuration updates from a USB storage device. Copy the unzipped files to be loaded to a blank USB flash drive.
Step 1 2 3 4 5 Action Ensure the Modbus TCP Firewall has been powered for at least one minute. Insert the USB storage device containing the prepared data into one of its USB ports. Press and hold the Config button for 5 seconds. See Figure 3 below. The Mode-Event-Fault LEDs begin to flash, in an upward sequence, to indicate a Load. When the flashing sequence stops (but not before) remove the USB storage device. If the load was successful, the Modbus TCP Firewall goes to OPERATIONAL mode, with the Mode LED showing a steady light.
