 What is Disaster (Bencana Alam)?

 Types of natural disaster?

 Why live in disaster prone regions?

 How to plan a sustainable living in

disaster prone regions?
 Conclusions
(Natural) Disaster
 Damage of property, life and psiche of
the people
 Medium to large scale

 Frequently or regularly  time

intervals
 Local, national to international
concerns
Types of Disaster
 Landslide
 Earthquake
 Tsunami
 Flood
 Rob
 Wind, tornado
 Forest fire
 Global warming
 Endemic diseases
 Etc.
Why live in disaster prone
regions?
 Heritage? Have to?

 Write your own…

Sustainable living in disaster
prone regions?
 Reduce the effects to minimum level:

• Preparedness  Early warning system

(EWS)

• Evacuation - Mitigation  reduce losses

• Relief
• Redevelopment  rehabilitation and
reconstruction
Sustainable living in disaster
prone regions?

 Needs a very good PLAN

Planning for sustainable living in
disaster prone regions
 Understand types of disaster which
may happen
 Understand the characteristics of each
type
 Estimate when, where and how big the
effects would be
 Estimate the needs of preparedness,
mitigation, relief and redevelopment
 Execute the plan
Planning for sustainable living in
disaster prone regions

 Needs complete information

 Problems:
• Info not always available
• Local wisdom not written, not properly
compiled
• Too many uncertainties  incomplete
knowledge due to empiricism
Contribution from Spatial
Planning?
 Hazard zoning
• Based on the magnitude and intensity
• An example in Kembang Tanjong District, Pidie,
NAD  next pictures
 Land Use 
• Allocation locations of activities;
• conservation and buffer areas
 Mitigation ( Examples from Aceh, see
next pictures):
• escape routes; refuge buildings/points; alarms for
EWS
• Zoning/building codes

certain conditions apply:
• Best comprehensive plans, including
spatial plan.
• Best implementation of the plans,
including the education aspect.
