Sanctuary Columbus Church

A special thanks to our Transitional Leadership Team, Ministry Team, and Volunteers for their service in 2012. We also thank each person for their gift of time, talent, prayers, and nances given through the ministry Sanctuary Columbus! Your continuing love and participation are crucial to reaching the city of Columbus, the region of Franklin County, and the rest of the world with the justice, mercy and humility of Jesus Christ.

As you read this report keep in mind that it is a reection of 2012. See yourself a key part of this vision and imagine the possibilities of what is to come. See the faces of life change. See the impact were making in Cbus and around the world through your partnership. My personal word for the year is Cultivate. This word reminds me of a season of preparation as one who cultivates takes care of nurturing their environment by looking forward to what lies ahead. But this is also the word that is for us and sets the course for our development. Hear 1 Timothy 4:15-16 (The Message) Cultivate these things. Immerse yourself in them. The people will all see you mature right before their eyes! Keep a rm grasp on both your character and your teaching. Dont be diverted. Just keep at it. Both you and those who hear you will experience salvation. With this in mind, were taking 2013 to focus on deepening who we are as a church and as followers of Jesus. Were aiming for spiritual maturity as well as capturing the momentum of numerical growth. Specically I hope to baptize more believers this year than before. I hope that more people get connected to Community Groups in the city. I hope the Holy Spirit meets with us in ways that can only be described as miraculous. I hope that a student ministry emerges to reach the youth in the neighborhood. Do I sound crazy to you?!?! Cultivating the vision together, PR

Dear Sanctuarians Cant you sense that something is happening in our church worth shouting about? Do you see it? Have you been able to feel it when you attend a Sunday service, pray together in a Community Group, or when youre serving in or outside the church? What is it? Its a movement of the Holy Spirit. This is a central conviction that empowers all ministry that comes through our church. We work, plan, and call on God because we believe that our Lord is at work among us - doing a new thing at Sanctuary. God has given us a tremendous amount of favor since we began weekly worship services February 20, 2011. Yes, were two!! Ocially we launched to the community Easter 2011 and as we immerse ourselves in this next year, we do so with a sense of anticipation of what God is yet to do in us and through us. We will live into this mission with Justice, Mercy and Humility.

The Sanctuary Ministry Team

Every church plant goes through changes and transitions in the early years. Im grateful for the people that make up our ministry team that have been here since the beginning. Weve developed a culture of leadership called #JetBlue that guides our practices for serving the Sanctuary family. Part of my responsibility as the pastor is to lead this team that will lead you in ways that bring out the best of God in you in service to others. In response to our growth and keeping in line with our vision, this past year we added paid ministry positions and added new volunteer roles. However, this team has people that have full-time jobs, they are single or married with multiple children, volunteer outside of Sanctuary, and one is completing an undergraduate degree. I treasure their involvement and I encourage you to pray intentionally for each person by name. I also ask that you consider supporting them by joining a ministry team of volunteers. Sanctuary: We have a great team. Love them, honor them, care well for them, cheer them on and never take them for granted.

Ministry Team Report :: Lead Pastor

Teaching ::
I plan the schedule for the year by soliciting input from the Transitional Leadership Team, Ministry Team and sometimes ask the congregation. I prefer teaching in sermon series to allow us opportunity to develop thoughts more fully than one sermon can accomplish. We preach both topical and expository messages that aim to be faithful to the text as we seek application for our daily lives. In order to take the sermon deeper, notes are provided in the worship guide and occasionally I will develop a study guide to go with the series. As I shared earlier, Ill be guided by the theme Cultivate and be speaking on matters that unpack our missional vision - particularly becoming one body of believers.

Developing Others :: While I am charged to preach 80% of the year, the other 20% will
be led primarily by preachers and teachers right here at Sanctuary. My goal is to grow a team of communicators that are able to accurately and condently deliver the gospel in ways that reect justice, mercy and humility. Im also bringing in people that are inuencing my thinking and practice of growing as a follower of Jesus. I pray that these other teachers help you as well.

Pastoral Care ::

A friend once said, You are not

pastoring anyone until youve cared for them in times of crisis or life transition. PC is core to my theological and practical understanding of as a pastor. I am privileged meet with others to pray, break bread, encourage, and make hospital or home visits, etc. Shalla has been gracious to open our home for meals, to extend herself as a listening ear, and coordinate care eorts when new babies arrive.

Transitional Leadership Team ::

The TLT meets once a month, usually the 4th Tuesday

from 8p-10pish. The TLT approves the budget, renes the vision, prays for the body, and oversees the pastorate. Our goal is to prepare Sanctuary Columbus to be received into the Evangelical Covenant Church denomination by creating the Constitution and By Laws as well as establish a membership structure. We are also discussing the possibility of leasing oce space for our growing team and for community outreach in the North Linden neighborhood.

Visioneering ::

This past year weve maintained 150 people in worship, saw 300+ at the

Christmas Concert, and started the 2013 year averaging 180 people in Sunday Celebration. If that attendance continues then we will add a second service in the fall. And did you know that 80% of adult attenders are in one of seven Community Groups? Im actively looking for a leader to own adding four new CGs this year as well as give direction to this ministry.

Worship Arts Report

Wendy Henderson, Director
Worship Celebration happens every Sunday and is for rejoicing in the work that God is doing to reconcile all things to himself. The Worship Arts ministry at Sanctuary facilitates a space for us to meet with God and for God to meet with us. Weve had a phenomenal year of spiritual growth as a corporate body - both in our musical language and in our depth as a multiethnic community pursuing the arts. We tried some drama in the Give Us A King sermon series as well as liturgical dance and a step team - all of which Id like to see us incorporate more often in regular worship. Im also encouraged by whos joining this team of skilled and committed volunteers along with Wendy. Weve experienced a surge of vocalists and guitarists as well as added another drummer. Id like to point out the volunteers like Sean Lobb, Jordan Roth and Dana Shirtzinger who dont contribute on stage regularly and are also a part of this team by operating the sound system. These are key members of the body helping us have a quality worship environment each week. The 2012 Advent Series: Songs of Christmas was highlighted by a 25 person gospel choir which put together two services for JOY: Singing with the Angels. It was certainly a joy to be a part of the choir myself, but more so to see Wendy put together a theme that carried us for the entire Advent season. We took a risk and went caroling as families and community groups in the North Linden neighborhood -when was the last time youve seen folks going door to door to sing to neighbors? We put smiles on some faces that day and even saw visitors attend Sanctuary. Some good memories were made and Advent Season will be a part of our yearly cycle of welcoming Jesus into our world. Throughout 2013 the Worship Arts Ministry will be strengthening this area by oering Summer seminars for volunteer members. These seminars strengthen and stretch our team musically and culturally. Ive also asked them to create worship evenings that will focus our attention on singing, celebrating and receiving from God. Im entirely grateful for Wendys leadership and her investment in our value for a multiethnic community. I can envision the day when we release our very own live Sanctuary Worship recording that is unique to our voice and our story.

Connections Report
Harlan Henderson, Director
When I walk into this building, I dont see a school or an auditorium, I see a sanctuary. That has possibly been one of our best compliments to date as it relates to creating a welcoming environment at Sanctuary. Of course you know that it doesnt happen by chance - every Sunday at 8:30a the building is unlocked and volunteers begin to unload our U-Haul storage truck. They set up approximately 170 chairs, plug in sound equipment, stretch a projection screen, layout tables draped with cloth and nally fold 90 worship guides. They take a breath, grab some coee and timbit then circle up for prayer. I am especially thankful for the men and women that consistently show up to transform our gathering place into a sacred assembly. Since we dont typically do mailers to the neighborhood, the main way that our church grows is through you talking about what is happening at SCC with your friends and co-workers. People also nd out about us through the internet when searching for a multiethnic church in Columbus. Shout out to Google...and Gabe. Yet, we can be more strategic about inviting new people into the church and getting them connected to Community Groups or a Ministry Team. In 2013 we started NEXT: a 30min welcome with Pastor Rich. Our rst meetings were attended by 13 guests. Im always excited to meet new people interested in partnering with us. As our weekly attendance continues to grow we will need to respond in faith by adding more space for newcomers. That means we either transition to two worship services at Tree of Life or nd a more accommodating meeting location for one service. This is a HUGE area of prayer. IN 2012 we had an average of 150 adults and children in worship. Since January 2013 weve averaged 180 attenders. Praise God! The word is getting out about Sanctuary and more people from the community are also attending regularly. I have just one job for each of you that call Sanctuary your home church - meet someone new each week. Start by simply asking this question, How long have you been coming to Sanctuary? Youll be surprised by the answers you receive.

Royal City Kids Report

Carinne Blackwell, Director
We are intentional about having kids in the worship time with adults. We pray, sing and take communion as one family. Ive been honored to dedicate ten children this year and baptize 3 others in 2012; one was my oldest son, Carter. Ive also joined in the suering with those whove lost unborn babies and ones not yet conceived. I cant even recall the number of new babies born in 2012 and 2013 got o to a roaring start! I can already hear the cries from the nursery area. Practically we need to be mindful of the growth in this space. The RCK ministry is a foundational area of service for our church that cannot be overlooked. It requires both gifted teachers as well as untrained workers joining together to share the gospel with the youngest generation. That is why Im asking every parent unit to volunteer on some level with RCK. Your involvement just once a quarter or four times a year would signicantly ease our needs for adult volunteers each week and help reach our kids for Christ.

Carinne Blackwell has been a part of the RCK team from the very beginning, but it wasnt until January of 2012 that she assumed the lead role. She has grown in her condence and knowledge as a leader which when combined with her volunteer team are an unstoppable force for ministering the gospel to our kids. A few accomplishments this year: Added a new class for 4th-6th grade students. Total of four classes for an avg of 50 kids each Sunday! Decided on new curriculum; Tru by David C. Cook which tells the full biblical narrative of Gods story of creation, fall, and redemption. Tru comes complete with fun activities and helpful tools for family discipleship that I personally enjoy. Sent eight kids to Camp Mission Meadows where Carinne was the main speaker for the week. Raised over $500 for Cambodia Missions.

Community Groups
Rich Johnson, Director
One of the most encouraging and vital ministries of Sanctuary is our Community Groups (CGs). It has been and continues to be the deepest expression of how we live out our values of mercy, justice and humility. CGs are the primary place for ones to receive soul care from the body, fellowship with friends on the same spiritual journey and respectful challenge from the scriptures. Currently seven CGs meet regularly (at least twice a month) in various neighborhoods throughout the city and four (4) more groups need to be added in 2013 to accommodate our rate of growth and interest in joining a CG. Are you ready to lead or host? An unsuspected joy occurred when I put together curriculum to support the sermon series through 1 John and Generosity. While it took many hours and late nights to complete before my deadline, the reward was worth the sacrice. Research consistently reports that individuals who process Sunday sermons in a smaller, more intentional community are more likely to grow spiritually and reach others for Christ. My hope is to write more CG curriculum to go along with sermon series in the years to come. Several groups have decided to have mens and womens fellowships within their CG structure. My CG is an example of this - at least once a month the guys and gals get together separately to do life beyond the group meeting. We eat, shoot pool, swap stories and challenge each other in more intentional ways. CGs also serve together and theyve been known to help with set-up or greeting at the door. A community that serves together reects our support and need for one another. One practical way that a CG led the church in 2012 was to coordinate a free yard sale for residents of the Linden community. We donated our gently used household items and gave them away - only accepting funds when they oered. More than $600.00 was raised to start outreach to refugees in the area. Yes, one CG can make a huge a dierence in our church and neighborhoods. To keep this momentum going in our Community Groups we will need to identify a director over CGs to assist me in this task. Ive been praying about a leader for some time and I trust that the Lord will lead us to the right person in this season. Our desire is to continue developing, training and equipping new CG leaders so that even more folks at Sanctuary can get plugged into a local body where they can belong to, believe in and become like the image of Christ.

Sanctuary Sisters
Darla Lazare, Director
2012 was the start of Sanctuary Sisters a womens ministry intentionally growing with each other towards Christ to live full, fruitful lives. Darla is joined by an amazing team of women from various stages of life that give input into how this group is shaped to meet our vision as a church body. Ive given this team a simple and signicant charge; provide a quarterly experience that draws women closer to Jesus and closer to one another. Im pleased to say that they have gotten o to a great start! Here are a few things they are planning for 2013; Bible studies Growing in our knowledge of Gods word and will for our lives. Social Events Building deep relationships with one another Service Serving with others to be encouraged and encourage others towards Christ. Ladies, be on the look out this year for a Sanctuary focused womens retreat, short-time groups geared towards your stage of life and summer-time play dates around the city.

Compassion & Justice

Amanda Epting, Director
I was overjoyed when Amanda Epting decided to accept the director role for the Compassion & Justice ministry team. You may recall that Amanda rst joined the sta as a part-time ministry coordinator in 2011. At the time she and Aaron had one child. In a few months after joining the sta they added two more boys; one by adoption and another by birth. WoW! Needless to say, Amanda needed a break and in that time we came to the conclusion that C&J is integral to who we are and our church mission from Micah 6:8. This focus required a part-time sta position which she readily agreed to ll. Together with Jon Thomas, Amanda has led a team that is passionate and committed to joining Gods work of justice in our world. Local Presence Sanctuary had a amazing year of service in 2012. For starters we took every fth Sunday of the month (5 Sundays for the year) to serve beyond our doors. Instead of gathering together for worship we scattered ourselves all over northeast Columbus to meet the needs of others. We did prayer walks, painted facilities for local organizations, delivered groceries to the shut in, and had a free yard sale. In addition to these special Sunday outreaches we launched the Family Garden Initiative that served over 200 families, held our second annual Victory Sports Camp for more than 100 kids, and had our rst Party in the Park for the neighborhood. Whew!! We are locally partnered with a few groups Chloe, Inc. is an organization led by Connie Nafziger whos mission is to empower young single moms to break the cycle of poverty. We helped introduce Chloe Cups as a fundraiser between Mothers and Fathers Day, which is a strategy being used by other local churches to collect funds that support their mission. Doma International is our local partner for addressing anti-human tracking and World Relief is leading the way in meeting the needs of refugees in the Northland area. Additionally we operate an in-school reading program called SOMA! at Linden S.T.E.M. academy for reading intervention at the second and third grade level. Our desire is for the city to recognize Sanctuary as a helpful advocate for the marginalized in our society.

The C&J Team is currently planned to visit every Community Group to teach a one-time lesson from the book of Nehemiah. This biblical narrative provides a clear path for deepening our vision and value for change in our city. Each Community Group will be given $150.00 to DO SOMETHING that shows compassion or justice for our city. This is an unprecedented act of empowering our church and I cant wait to see what groups come up with for C&J projects this year.

Global Presence Sanctuary partners with the Evangelical Covenant Church to respond to relief eorts in the case of natural disasters as well as send ongoing nancial support to the Hindustani Covenant Church in Pune, India. Later this year we will take a group of about ve-eight on a vision trip to India to explore and identify areas of service suitable for long-term commitment. Our goal is to connect with church planting and orphan care movements led by indigenous leaders. We have also nancially helped with the start up costs and fully funded two months of operating costs for the Hidota Health Clinic in Bora, Ethiopia. I personally visited there in 2011 and I look forward to a future trip to explore other opportunities how Sanctuary might be invested for a strategic long-term relationship in Ethiopia.

Did you know that our regular coee is purchased locally and supports a Christian private school in the Linden community in addition to being fair-trade?

Ministry Support
Delaine Thomas
Dela rst served Sanctuary diligently as a volunteer before joining the ministry team in an administrative role. She leads worship, teaches in RCK, manages our communication strategy and basically keeps everyone together...especially her brother-in-law, me. Were really excited about some ways we can improve our communication and it begins with updating our database system with your current information. We also have a Sanctuary Columbus Facebook Page that is updated weekly with fresh content and interaction. Were also planning to start video recording sermons and posting them online as well. You can help us spread the word about SCC via social media. Perhaps Delaines most signicant responsibility is to support our ministry team leaders that move people one step closer to an authentic relationship with Jesus. Whether its volunteering for a LoveCbus outreach, connecting with a new community group or getting baptized - we exist as a church to make disciples of Jesus obeying all that he commanded us.
