INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHEMICAL KINETICS SIMULATOR (CKS 1.

01) ------------------------------------------------------------------This document describes how to install the CKS 1.01 program. For users of OS/2 or Windows : Two methods of installation are described below. You may install CKS 1.01 by decompressing the files you have downloaded into a temporary directory or folder on your computer's hard disk and then running the installation program from that directory. Alternately, you may first create a set of product diskettes for CKS 1.01, and then use those diskettes to install the program on your computer. For users of Macintosh or Power Macintosh : CKS 1.01 may be installed by decompressing the files you have downloaded into an existing folder on your computer's hard disk. The complete set of program files and folders is created directly by this step; no further installation steps are necessary. For all users : It is highly recommended that you also obtain the User's Manual for CKS 1.01. The manual is available in Adobe Acrobat .PDF format (this format facilitates easy on-screen viewing and printing) and in PostScript format. You can obtain these versions of the manual, along with detailed instructions for on-screen viewing and printing, from the same location where you obtained the program files. OS/2 VERSION -------------REQUIREMENTS: - OS/2 version 2.1 or greater - approximately 3 MB free hard disk space for the installed CKS program files - another 1.3 MB free hard disk space that will be used temporarily by the installation utility during the CKS installation procedure - an 'unzipping' program, such as PKUNZIP.EXE (DOS version), PKUNZIP2.EXE (OS/2 version) or the UNZIP32 program from the INFOZIP package (available within IBM on OS2TOOLS, and widely available outside IBM (e.g. by anonymous ftp from ftp.cdrom.com ). If you are creating a set of CKS product diskettes you will also need - two 1.44M, 3.5" diskettes

If you are installing CKS by by decompressing the downloaded files directly on your computer's hard disk you will also need - a temporary directory and another 3 MB of hard disk space to contain the decompressed installation files. The directory can be removed and the hard disk space freed after successful installation. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS : Obtain the files named CKSOS2-1.ZIP and CKSOS2-2.ZIP. These contain all the files required for installation. You will also want to download a copy of the README1.CKS file (the file you are now viewing). You should also obtain the file MANUAL.ZIP which contains the full user's manual in PostScript format, or the file MANPDF.ZIP which contains the full user's manual in Adobe Acrobat format. A. To install from a temporary directory 1a. create a temporary directory on a hard drive with at least 3 MB free disk space. 2a. unzip the file CKSOS2-1.ZIP into the temporary directory. If you are using the InfoZip UNZIP32 utility, use the command UNZIP32 CKSOS2-1.ZIP -d d:\tempdir (where 'd:\tempdir' is the path to your temporary directory) from an OS/2 command line session. If you are using the PKUNZIP2.EXE utility, use the command PKUNZIP2 CKSOS2-1.ZIP d:\tempdir (where 'd:\tempdir' is the path to your temporary directory) from an OS/2 command line session. If you are using the PKUNZIP.EXE utility, use the command PKUNZIP CKSOS2-1.ZIP d:\tempdir (where 'd:\tempdir' is the path to your temporary directory) from a DOS command line session. 3a. unzip the file CKSOS2-2.ZIP into the temporary directory. You now have a complete set of installation files. The files CKSOS2-1.ZIP and CKSOS2-2.ZIP are no longer needed and may be moved to floppy diskettes (for archival use) once you confirm the successful creation of the set of installation files. 5a. To begin the product installation, type 'd:\tempdir\install' (where 'd:\tempdir' is the path to your temporary directory) from an OS/2 command line session, or open the appropriate drive and folder objects and double-click on the 'install.exe' program object to start the installation utility. Follow the instructions given by the installation utility. 6a. The installation utility will created a folder named 'Chemical Kinetics' on your desktop. Open the folder and double click on the icon labeled 'Chemical Kinetics Simulator' to start the program. We recommend that you first work through the tutorial session of the manual to familiarize yourself with the operation and features of the program. 7a. After verifying successful installation, the files in the temporary directory may be erased and the temporary directory may be deleted.

B. To create a set product diskettes and to use the diskettes to install CKS 1b. label the two diskettes 'Chemical Kinetics Simulator - Installation Diskette 1' and 'Chemical Kinetics Simulator - Installation Diskette 2'. 2b. Format the diskette labeled 'Chemical Kinetics Simulator - Installation Diskette 1' with the command FORMAT a: /V:CKS1 (where 'a:' is the letter of your 3.5" floppy drive). The /V option is needed because the installation utility requires the diskette volume label to be CKS1. Alternately, if you have

blank, preformatted diskettes you may also use the LABEL command to set the diskette volume label: LABEL a:CKS1 (where 'a:' is the letter of your 3.5" floppy drive).

3b. Format the diskette labeled 'Chemical Kinetics Simulator - Installation Diskette 2' with the command FORMAT a: /V:CKS2 (where 'a:' is the letter of your 3.5" floppy drive). The /V option is necessary because the installation utility requires the diskette volume label to be CKS2. Alternately, if you have blank, preformatted diskettes you may also use the LABEL command to set the diskette volume label: LABEL a:CKS2 (where 'a:' is the letter of your 3.5" floppy drive).

4b. place the diskette labeled 'Chemical Kinetics Simulator - Installation Diskette 1' into your 3.5" floppy drive and unzip the file CKSOS2-1.ZIP to the diskette. To begin the product installation, place the diskette labeled 'Chemical Kinetics Simulator Installation Diskette 1' into the 3.5" floppy drive and type 'a:install' (where 'a:' is the drive letter of your 3.5" floppy drive) from an OS/2 command line session, or open the appropriate floppy drive object and double-click on the 'install.exe' program object to start the installation utility. 4a. You now have a complete set of installation files. The files CKSWIN-1.ZIP and CKSWIN-2.ZIP are no longer needed and may be moved to floppy diskettes (for archival use) once you confirm the successful creation of the set of installation files. 5a. MACINTOSH VERSION (Motorola 68000 series microprocessor) ----------------REQUIREMENTS: - Macintosh System 7.x - Apple Macintosh computer based on the Motorola 68000 series microprocessor - approximately 3.6 MB free hard disk space for the installed program - another 1.9 MB free hard disk space that will be used temporarily during installation by the compressed product file CKSMAC.HQX - the Stuffit Expander program, a freeware program widely available outside IBM from many sources (e.g. by anonymous ftp from ftp.cdrom.com ).

This is a Stuffit archive file (converted to BinHex format for electronic transmission) that will be used to create the installed product files and folders. You will also want to download a copy of the README1.CKS file (the file you are now viewing). You should also obtain the file MANUAL.HQX which contains the full user's manual in PostScript format, or the file MANPDF.HQX which contains the full user's manual in Adobe Acrobat format.

2. Drop the file CKSMAC.HQX on your Stuffit Expander icon. This will decode CKSMAC.HQX into a file named CKSMAC.SIT, and will then decompress CKSMAC.SIT . A folder named "Chemical Kinetics Simulator", containing all the program files and folders, is created by this process. Move this folder to your Hard Disk folder (usually named "Macintosh HD") if it was not placed there upon creation. 3. You now have a complete set of program files and folders. Open the folder named 'Chemical Kinetics Simulator' and double click on the icon labeled 'cks' to start the program. We recommend that you first work through the tutorial session of the manual to familiarize yourself with the operation and features of the program. NOTE : You may need to restart your computer (e.g. by selecting "Special/Restart" from the Finder menu) before all the CKS program file icons are displayed correctly. 4. After the program has been successfully installed, the files files CKSMAC.HQX and CKSMAC.SIT are no longer needed and may be archived and removed

POWER MACINTOSH VERSION (PowerPC microprocessor) ----------------REQUIREMENTS: - Macintosh System 7.5 or greater - Apple Power Macintosh computer based on the PowerPC microprocessor, or compatible - approximately 4.5 MB free hard disk space for the installed program - another 2.4 MB free hard disk space that will be used temporarily during installation by the compressed product file CKSPMAC.HQX - the Stuffit Expander program, a freeware program widely available outside IBM from many sources (e.g. by anonymous ftp from ftp.cdrom.com ).
