Teens work on Eagle Scout projects
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
Two Moorestown High School
seniors recently earned Eagle
Scout ranking. Jeremy Wilbur
and Kevin Shaloo managed to
earn their Eagle Scout rankings
before turning 18.
Its the highest honor the Boy
Scouts can achieve. Its quite a
distinction, Troop 44 leader Tri-
cia McCunney-Thomas said.
For their Eagle Scout projects,
Kevin and Jeremy gave back to
the community in different ways.
Kevin built a mounting ramp for
disabled patients so they are able
to get onto a horse for rehabilita-
tion therapy, while Jeremy col-
lected toiletries for the New Vi-
sions Homeless Shelter in Cam-
den.
If they were unsuccessful in
completing the project before
their 18th birthday, the Eagle
Scout ranking would no longer be
possible. According to Boy Scouts
of America, approximately 5 per-
cent of all Boy Scouts earned the
Eagle Scout rank in 2011, and the
average age was 17.
Both advanced from rank to
rank in the Scouts.

The Moorestown Sun
A dog park may be coming to
Moorestown in the near future.
As part of an Eagle Scout proj-
ect, Moorestown Boy Scout Troop
44 member John Matthews pre-
sented council with his plan to
create a dog park in John Pryor
Park. Members of council ap-
proved Matthews idea for the
new dog park on Monday, Feb. 18.
Matthews said he wanted to
create a dog park for residents
who would normally let their
dogs off leash on outdoor recre-
ational fields.
This obviously isnt a good
thing. It messes up the sports
fields and its also not really safe
for the dogs. I thought it would be
a good idea to create a dog park
for these people to have their dogs
run around off their leash and
give them a place to do these
things that would not really harm
any other part of the town, he
said.
Matthews estimated the project
to cost between $10,000 and
$15,000. He said the Boy Scouts
would build benches and tables
and work on landscaping to cre-
ate shaded areas. A contractor
must put up the fencing.
Township manager Scott
Carew said the township does
have a cap on what can be done on
public property. He said if the
fence contractors proposal is
above $14,187 the contractor will
have to pay prevailing wages,
which will raise the cost of the
contract.
Anything you can do to keep
that number below $14,187 would
make your life a whole lot easier,
he said.
Matthews hopes contractors
for the fencing would be willing to
donate their time and materials
toward the project, but those do-
nations were not included in the
estimate.
Its better to be safe, he said.
The plan to raise money for the
project is to host fundraising
events, including a dog fair at
Moorestown Day on June 1.
The fence system will include
double gates for pets to safely
enter and exit the park as well as
separate fencing for maintenance
vehicles.
Matthews said he hopes to re-
ceive contributions from local
businesses as well as individual
sponsors. Individual sponsors
would be recognized with a sign
on the dog park site if he or she
donates $50, he said.
Carew supported the idea of
having individual sponsors at the
dog park, but he suggested
Matthews should consider plac-
ing a rules and regulations sign
at the park.

BRIEFS
I
n November, New Jersey voters
will have the opportunity to ap-
prove a bill that would increase the
states minimum wage from $7.25 per
hour to $8.25 per hour, starting in Sep-
tember 2014. An approving vote would
also kick in automatic cost-of-living in-
creases each year based on the Con-
sumer Price Index.
In his State of the Union address
this year, President Obama recom-
mended raising the minimum wage to
$9 per hour. If Congress approves of
that measure, it would take effect na-
tionwide.
Not surprisingly, though, small busi-
ness owners in New Jersey are over-
whelmingly against raising the mini-
mum wage. The New Jersey chapter of
the National Federation of Independ-
ent Business showed that 93 percent of
its members oppose the move. NFIB
Director Laurie Ehlbeck called the re-
sults one of the most one-sided shes
ever seen.
And it should be no surprise as to
why.
The states, and the countrys,
biggest current employment problem
isnt that workers are paid too little; its
that there arent enough jobs available.
Raising the minimum wage, forcing
small business owners to spend more
money, is not a solid tactic to encour-
age hiring. The focus should be on in-
centivizing small business owners to
hire more workers, not to pay their
current workers more money.
The governments logic is misguided
if it believes that the reason that un-
employed workers wont take entry-
level jobs is that the salary isnt high
enough. Thats part of the problem,
true, but thats mainly because our
government is incentivizing people not
to work, with the structure of unem-
ployment benefits being what theyve
been for so long now.
It would be a shame for a bill like
this to pass at a time when the states
job market just reported positive gains.
The state Labor Department reported
recently that New Jersey gained 66,400
jobs in 2012, the largest such jump
since 2000.
Sure, were still way off the pre-re-
cession employment rate, but at least
its a start.
Our local and federal governments
need to find a way incentivize small
businesses to hire, instead of burden-
ing them with yet another added cost
of doing business.
in our opinion
Put people to work
Creating more jobs, not raising minimum wage, is the answer
Your thoughts?
Do you plan on voting for or against the
state constitutional amendment that
would raise New Jerseys minimum
wage by $1 to $8.25 per hour?

There are specific badges that
need to be earned for the Eagle
Scout rank, former assistant
Scoutmaster and den leader Mark
Wilbur said.
He said Eagle Scouts need 21
merit badges, including badges in
first aid, citizenship in the nation,
citizenship in the community and
citizenship in the world, commu-
nications, personal fitness, emer-
gency preparedness or life saving,
and more.
Mark said there are approxi-
mately 100 badges the boys could
earn, but out of those badges,
they need to make sure they have
the ones for their Eagle ranking.
There is more to the Eagle
Scout ranking than earning a
badge for your sash. The boys
must spend six months in a troop
leadership position; plan, develop
and give leadership to a service
project; take part in a Scoutmas-
ter conference; and complete an
Eagle Scout board of review, the
Boy Scouts of Americas website
says.
In addition to the merit
badges, they hold different posi-
tions of leadership. In Scouting,
leadership is a big thing, Mark
said, adding the den leaders are
there to supervise the Scouts and
make sure no one gets hurt. But
the Scout leaders are left in
charge.
They are in a position now all
of the fathers love. They are now
feeling what it is like to be a par-
ent. Their peers have to take or-
ders from them and they have to
do the mundane tasks like cook-
ing and cleaning, he said.
Both boys moved through the
rankings of tenderfoot, second
class, first class, star, and life,
earning all necessary badges and
completing all required tasks.
But the boys were cutting it
close, Mark said. Jeremy finished
his service project a few days be-
fore he turned 18, while Kevins
project was completed a few
weeks before his birthday.
A lot of them wait and put it
off and procrastinate, he said,
adding the Scouts are also taught
self-responsibility.
Although helping Jeremy with
his project would have been easy,
Mark said the Scouts must learn
life lessons when it comes to re-
sponsibility and leadership.
Thats part of the reality.
Some of them get it done it earli-
er, he said.
Both boys started in the Scouts
at a young age. Jeremy began as a
Tiger Cub while Shaloo began his
journey as a Cub Scout. Both said
their journey through the Scout
rankings was difficult, but it
taught them maturity and respon-
sibility.
Scouting has been an unfor-
gettable experience that I wish all
of my friends could have. I
learned a lot about leadership,
camping, shooting, cooking and
the outdoors, Jeremy said.
Leading up to the Eagle Scout
project, both Jeremy and Shaloo
said the planning and execution
of earning the Eagle Scout rank
was stressful considering there is
a time limit. But for both Eagle
Scouts, the journey is unforget-
table.
I realized as I was finishing up
years and years of work, how
much I had learned. I realized
how much Boy Scouts matured
me and changed me into a man.
Without a doubt this is the great-
est accomplishment of my life,
and the thing I am most proud
of, Shaloo said.
Mark said boys take the skills
they learn during Scouts and
apply it to careers.
Jeremy plans on going to Rut-
gers University New Brunswick
for a degree in law enforcement.
He is currently a volunteer at the
Lenola Fire Department.
The camaraderie is awesome
and a lot of the best times and
friends that I have are from
Scouts. I plan on using my leader-
ship and practical skills in a law
enforcement career, he said.
Shaloo is planning to attend
Saint Josephs University for
physical therapy and hopes to get
his doctorate.
I will use the leadership skills,
morals and communication skills
that I learned from Scouts and
use it everyday for the rest of my
life, Shaloo said.
Both are planning to continue
to be involved with the Scouts.
I would like to stay a part of
my Troop for as long as I can.
They gave so much to me. I feel
like I need to give back, Shaloo
said.
I plan on staying fairly active
in Scouts, Jeremy said. I will
definitely use my survival skills
from Scouts in college.
A ceremony will be held honor-
ing their achievements on Satur-
day, April 13, at 5 p.m. at the First
United Methodist Church located
at 446 E. Camden Ave.

Considering the park will be
placed approximately 150 feet
from the nearest home, the sign
should include park hours as well
as rules of conduct. Carew also
suggested garbage cans and dog-
gie bag dispensers be placed in
the plan.
Mayor Stacey Jordan said
Matthews should go door-to-door
explaining the project to the resi-
dents in that area and get their
blessing, to help avoid a not in
my backyard situation.
I think sometimes when you
go and talk to people about it be-
fore, you have a better chance of
moving forward with things, she
said.
Carew said by creating this dog
park, it would help eliminate resi-
dents from taking their dogs into
gated recreational fields.
To provide this option, its
going to be a huge help to all of
us, Carew said.
Councilman Phil Garwood said
he expects a positive response to
the dog park, adding he expects
many residents to volunteer their
time to help.
Its a win-win for everybody.
Unleash the dogs, he said.
