Abstract
In todays world wireless sensor networks have been started to use in many areas such as healthcare, security, military, agriculture and monitoring environment. In this project, applications of wireless sensor networks in real world will be examined and explained in order to understand benefits of using them. In addition, operations and standards of wireless sensor networks will be expressed. Thus, importance of using wireless technology can be understood easily. Moreover, the existing issues like energy problems, node location, and minimal infrastructure can be observed and solved. During the project, surveys which are conducted by universities and mainly implementations which are applied by all over the world will be determined and will be collected data. Fundamental aim in this project is observing current wireless technology in detail to provide a perspective which is an increase of wireless usage in world by solving problems. 1. Introduction
Wireless sensor networks have become very important by developing technology due to the fact that existing wired technology has a lot of disadvantages in terms of its complexity and difficulty in mobility. Wireless sensor networks are autonomous implements which consist of low cost, power nodes which provide sensors to measure temperature, pressure, motion, sounds, humidity, speed and many other conditions. Sensors have transducer, microcomputer, transceiver, and power source. They work out by interconnecting the information which is collected from sensor nodes where can be located in measuring area.
There are some standards for wireless sensor network which are determinate by IEEE (The institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). IEEE 802.11 legacy was the first wireless standard in 1997. It has problems so after two years IEEE 802.11a and IEEE 802.11b was revealed. Settlements of the Wi-F are arranged according to IEEE 802.11. After these series, IEEE represent standard of 802.15.4 in 2006. ZigBee, WirelessHart, 6lowpan based on 802.15.4 standards of IEEE.

Wireless sensor networks are developing technology so they have some problems. Firstly energy problem is most important issue for sensors because usually battery is used for power source which has limited capacity. Other important problems are minimal infrastructure, minimal mobility and security. There are lots of areas in where wireless sensor networks are used: military applications, environmental monitoring, support for logistic, human-centric applications and applications to robotics. In this project, we will search these utilizations of wireless sensors in detail. 2. Definition and Scope After we summarize working system of wireless sensor networks, roughly we can categorize applications as environmental monitoring, healthcare applications, military, support for logistic and applications to robotics. Then we will observe these groups in detail. Environmental monitoring includes indoor environmental monitoring and emergency services, outdoor monitoring-application to ecology and outdoor monitoring application to agriculture. There are some surveys in this field. For instances, one of them is monitoring light and temperature which is conducted by University of Berkeley. Other in Great Duck Island is measure enable to sense temperature, barometric pressure and humidity. Another
one in Berkeley University is a survey of microclimates in a vineyard which aim to increase the productivity with sensors.
Military applications emphasize the enemy tracking, battlefield surveillance and target classifications. There are some researches about these subjects. For example, there is a survey in Ohio States University which is called A line in the sand detect and classify the moving metallic objects. Healthcare system usually uses the wireless sensors. Wireless sensors have an important role in medical area such as examination the behavior of patient by recording the frequency of tactile of objects in University of Washington. In support for logistic, wireless system is very useful for big companies because they have been all around the world. Thanks to wireless sensors, they easily provide their unity in the world. Some examples to applications:
There are a lot of other applications in the world during the project we will try to examine them. 2.1. Project Objective Statement We will search the current projects which use in different areas in the world by observing existing studies and applications. We expect to finish this project approximately 9. Jan.2009. Cost of the project depends on its progress. 2.2. Deliverables When we finish the project, it will be given to our supervisor. If our research is useful, it can be source of the new applications of wireless sensors. In addition we will prepare our progress report, final report at the end of semester; we will prepare presentation and poster. These are the requirement of Project 102 course. 2.3. Milestones 2.3.1 Doing research and examining operation and standard of wireless sensor networks. 2.3.2 Determining application areas and collecting data 2.3.3 .Achieve explaining every application and survey completely. 3. Project Planning 3.1. Work Breakdown Structure 3.1.1 Researches about wireless sensor network from web sites, books, data base
3.1.2 Determining and collecting data 3.1.3 Classification of the data and assigning the applications of wireless system 3.1.4 Survey and implementations about the environmental monitoring 3.1.5 Observing the military application which is include the wireless study 3.1.6 Search usage of wireless sensors in healthcare systems 3.1.7 Examine the wireless sensor networks to support for logistic 3.2.1 Prepare poster of the project 3.2.2 Presentation 3.2. Organizational Structure We will work together first two week while collecting general data wireless sensor network. After that during one week we will try to examine operation of wireless sensors. Then we will start to our fundamental aim which is observing applications and surveys of sensors all around the world. We will study environmental monitoring, military and healthcare applications and support for logistic for per two weeks individually. Subsequently, we will combine our data in Mondays. Thus we can ask our questions to our supervisor in meetings at Wednesdays at 16.00 3.3. Time and Resource Plan
