ACN 201: Case Study 1

ETHICS CASE 1
Beth Stone is an accounting major at State University with a 3.8 grade point. She has decided to pursue career in public accounting. Beths first choice was CPA Firm A as it had many clients in the high-tech industry. But the firm told Beth that it had over hired the year before and would not be able to make her an offer. She finally accepted a position with Firm B, as it was her second choice, with a salary of $30,000 plus overtime, which also had clients in the high-tech firm and Health Care Industry. Two months after Beth had accepted the offer, she received an urgent call from Firm A which called Beth to join Firm A with a salary of $31,000. They also guaranteed that she would be able to specialize in the high-tech industry. Answer to question (a): Now reading the materials we come to see that Beth has two options. Option (1) First she can join Firm A which will offer her the followings: $31,000 salary plus overtime $1,000 salary higher than Firm B just to provoke Beth Would be able to specialize in the high-tech industry Would be working with on interesting jobs with talented people It was Beths first favorite industry Option (2) Or, she can join Firm B, where she already accepted the offer. It will offer her the followings: $30,000 salary plus overtime They offered her the job before Firm B has few clients in the high-tech industry They also have clients in the Health Care Industry It was Beths second favorite industry Answer to question (b): Beth has two options. She can go for Firm A, which was her first choice, where she set her heart to get employed. Or, she can join Firm B, who offered her before and contained many facilities and which was also her second favorite industry. But Beth should go for Firm B, where she had already accepted the offer. Firm B gave her time after offering her for the job. They did not force her to join. They also did not through any threat towards Beth for not joining. Neither had they taken any other person in her position. They kept that very position for Beth to join. Firm B also offered the things Beth wanted to have. And thus considering the above cases and for the sake of Ethics, Beth should join Firm B.
