Editorial Commentary
Cause for optimism
Latest figures from the Colorado Department of
Labor show the number of people filing claims for
unemployment in Chaffee County rose from 5.5
percent in December to 7.4 percent in January, a
month later.
The sharp increase in new unemployment filings
in the county from December to January is consis-
tent with what happened in nearby counties and
throughout Colorado. Statewide, unemployment
increased from 5.8 percent to 6.6 percent.
Statewide official figures don’t come as much of
a surprise. January was a difficult month for many
businesses – something unemployment statistics
bear out.
But could economic conditions in the county and
valley be turning up?
Looking at one indicator, help wanted ads, busi-
ness, economic activity and the jobs market appear
to be improving.
This week The Mail’s help wanted section ran to
about two dozen ads. Open jobs included a number
of professional and semi-professional positions for
nurses, police officers and administrative assis-
tants, to a number of service jobs for cooks, wait
