Introduction If you could stand to lose a few pounds, youre not alone. A whopping two-thirds of all Americans are overweight or obese. Losing weight is a struggle for most people. Whether youre trying to lose the last five pounds or a couple of hundred pounds, its not easy to make the scale your friend instead of your mortal enemy. And to make matters worse, for most people who are overweight, having to lose weight is not a first-time issue. Theyve seen this movie before. Theyve lost weight and then regained it all and then some. Well guess what? Ive been there too. From the time I entered the workplace after graduating college until about 3 years ago I struggled with my weight. I was never really huge, but at the same time, I was never really slim. My first real diet was crash dieting my way to dropping ten pounds before I got married. I had Slim-Fast shakes for two meals a day and a less than sensible dinner. I was irritable. I was exhausted. But I made it happen. Unfortunately, post honeymoon it came right back with a vengeance. And so began years of yo-yoing. A heavier version of Melanie. A smaller version of Melanie. Rinse and repeat. The ironic thing is that I knew a lot about healthy eating and exercise. It was a passion of mine. And when I was on a roll and was the smaller version of Melanie, I was firing on all cylinders. In fact, during one of my slimmer times in 2002 when I was on a roll as the smaller version of Melanie and thought I had it all figured out by going Vegan, Vegetarian and then Flexitarian (minimal amounts of fish and poultry, no red meat), that I even wrote my book Have Your Cheeseburger And Keep Your Health Too! At that time I thought I finally got it, but I had one more run as the bigger version of Melanie even after I knew it all. So if I knew so much, why couldnt I stay slim? Simple. There's a huge difference between knowing what you should do, and then taking and sustaining action. In my own case it was a combination of being an emotional eater, needing more exercise and the right kinds of exercise and a lack of accountability that was standing in my way. It wasnt until I figured that outand more importantly, how to overcome it for goodthat the smaller version of Melanie was sustained. And it took me years to get there.

My Dad, who passed away unexpectedly a little over a year ago, was another prime example of the fact that theres a big difference between knowing what you should do and actually making it happen. He subscribed to virtually every health newsletter and magazine there was. He had a bookshelf full of books on reversing diabetes, not having a second heart attack, healthy cooking, vegetarian cooking, Dr. Weil and losing weight and diets galore. He had notepads full of healthy recipes he jotted down from everywhere. Dad was a good man who knew he needed to take action, yet most of the newsletters and magazines ended up in a pile collecting dust, the books were barely opened and few healthy creations were cooked. He actually had a lot of longevity in his family history as both his parents and many of his relatives lived to their early 90s, but he predeceased them by nearly a decade. These are just two examples, but the reality is most people know what to do to be their happiest and healthiest version of themselves; they just need help getting there. Its that part of the weight loss journey that is the missing link for most people, and why I invested my time and money getting certified as a Health and Wellness Coach by the top organizations in the fieldWellcoaches (which is endorsed by the American College of Sports Medicine) and the American Council on Exercise. I can now successfully help others figure out very quickly what their obstacles are and how to overcome them for good so it wont take them years to figure it out for themselves. So from what I just shared we know that: A. Most people are overweight or obese. B. Like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, you pretty much have what you need to succeed inside you all the time, and just dont realize it or know how to use that power. C. Its possible, once you figure out whats standing in your way to finally achieve weight loss success. Permanent weight loss success. Great! So how do you get there? Weight Loss Secret #4: Get a Weight Management System Device

So how do you really know if youre burning enough calories each dayor at least on average for the weekto create a large enough calorie deficit to lose weight? You can estimate your activity for a specific kind of workout using standard calorie charts. For example, according to MayoClinic.com, a 160-pound person walking at a pace of 3.5 miles per hour would burn 277 calories. But how do you know if you specifically burn at that rate when you walk? And what about all the other activities you do in a day? Suppose you shop at a huge store like Costco and cover almost every aisle? What about playing with your kids at the playground? How about cleaning the house? How about the two flights of stairs you climbed? Youd go nuts trying to figure out exactly what you burned looking up every little activity, and at best, youd still only have an estimate because it wouldnt be tied to your unique metabolism. You might burn more or less than whats standard for an activity. And you might either overestimate or underestimate your activity even if you could somehow calculate all these items. Suppose there was a way to know exactly what you personally burned throughout the day and nightwhether you were working out, going about daily activities, sitting watching TV or sleeping that was easy and accurate? There is! Its called a personal weight management system device. Ive been using one called the Bodybugg for over five years. It doesnt matter if Im teaching a class, running errands or just sitting there, youll see this black armband with a flat square on it that might look like an MP3 player on my left upper arm. Bodybugg is the private label brand made for 24-Hour Fitness (the gym I belonged to when I lived out West) by BodyMedia. Regardless of branding, both are devices that track your personal calorie burn using thermal technology for everything you doand dont dothroughout your day without you having to think about it. So each day you know for real what you personally burned. Then if you look at that data against your calories consumed, youll have a crystal clear idea of whether youre really creating the deficit you need to lose weight successfully. Youd be surprised at how many times you might think youve been super active, and you really werent and vice-versa. In addition, these devices have real-time displays or interact with your Smartphone to let you know where youre at during any point in the day. So if youre well into the day and see that your calories burned are low, you still have time to step it up and save the day. On the other hand, if you see that youre absolutely torching calories, you can either bank them towards your weekly deficit goal or take in a little more food or a treat that day.

There are also trackers that measure your activity based on movement, but not necessarily based on your metabolism or when youre not moving like Fitbit, Jawbone Up and Nike Fuelband which would be the next best thing. To me a personal weight management system device is one of the key missing links for most people trying to lose weight. No longer is what youre burning a mystery or at best a SWAG (silly wild-assed guess for those of you who dont know). Youve got facts you can act upon to make your weight loss a reality. Trust me, youll wonder how you ever tried to lose weight without one. Fitting Bodybugg or another device into your life is really very easy once you give it a go. Every morning as soon as I get up, I slip it oneven before I brush my teeth. I dont want to miss out on credit for any calories burned. My Bodybugg has become such a part of my life over the years that recently when I went on a trip back West, I forgot to take it off before going through airport security. That was a big mistake. The TSA, like many people, werent aware of what a Bodybugg was, so it was a huge hassle. They kept me waiting while they put it in a little dish and ran it through the scanner again.
