reflections
from the editor
Jackie Peters
jpeters@naturespathways.com

Welcome, April!

Our outside environment is abuzz with positive energy, and the world is alive again! Gardeners, walkers, bikers and what I call putzers are emerging in abundance. Its an exciting time of year! Getting more active outside means spending more time in nature. Recently I read an interesting article about ecotherapy and its regenerative powers: stress, anxiety and depression reduction, and overall mood improvement. More and more health care providers are giving their patients nature prescriptions for treatment of various medical conditions as well. Research is showing that spending time in a natural setting has benefits for mind, body and spirit. On April 22 we pay homage to our precious Mother Earth. There are many ways to celebrate Earth Day and make a difference: treat your yard to some compost (best of all, that which you made yourself!), reduce, reuse and recycle, pick up litter, shop local or ride your bike for an errand. Small acts by each of us can really add up to make a big difference! This month brings another observance, World Health Day, on April 7. Celebrate by learning about health issues around the globe and what you can do to help. Check out the World Health Organizations website at www.who.int/world-health-day/en/ for more information. There are some wonderful healthy living articles in this issue to help you on your journey. Dennis Kotnour shares some common roadblocks to weight loss of which we should be mindful. Debi Morton encourages us to purchase and grow organic, and presents some interesting facts in that regard. Sonya Theis educates us on a

healing modality called spiritual response technique. And theres much more, so please read on! I hope youre able to get wrapped up in the positive energy of this time of year and enjoy some quality time with nature. Please find your own special way to honor our planet this Earth Day! In health and happiness,

Do you have a comment or question about something you read in Nature's Pathways? Is there a story you'd like to read? How about something you didn't like as much? Whatever your opinion, we want to know! Please email Jackie at jpeters@naturespathways.com or info@naturespathways.com. Thanks for reading!

Nurturing the healer within

(Part 1)
By Dr. Wade Anunson

hy worry about how the body heals when we can shirk that responsibility onto our doctor, acupuncturist or chiropractor? Over the past 19 years of my professional career, I have been schooled by thousands of patients whove shown me where the value is. As you know, the value to you, as a consumer seeking health care advice, is in resolving a current problem or preventing further loss. Were all aware that our environment is changing at an unprecedented pace. Were expecting more and more, quicker and quicker. The same expectations were trained to depend upon with our

Internet bandwidth, spills over into our annoyingly aggravated sore hip, knee and shoulder problems. This doctor, fix me attitude has disempowered you, the patient, the consumer, leaving you dependent on chasing symptoms or treating effects.

Its not rocket science

Fact: Your body is self-healing and self-regulating, all of which happens without fail unless its interfered with. Day in and day out, I spend time educating patients on the role of the spine and the nerve system, and the amazing possibilities that result from a healthy functioning spine. The resounding theme is that many people are still unaware of how powerful their body is capable of being and, most of all, where healing comes from. In our society, were taught to fear disease, so our efforts go into eradicating the bugs, such as viruses, bacteria, etc. This is a direct result of a health care system thats based on the fear that something outside of us is the cause of our ill health or chronic musculoskeletal pain. Again, this disempowers you. Its true, there are environmental forces continually challenging your body to adapt, survive and thrive. But wait, not so fast. Were designed with the means to adapt to our ever-changing environment. Our ability to adapt, self-heal and self-regulate happens as a result of uninterrupted flow and communication between your brain and the rest of your body. This all happens through your brilliant network of nerves connecting your bodys cells to the brain. Proper digestion first requires healthy nerve flow yes, first. Without a connection, nothing happens. You might be thinking that food is the most important, but, while it is essential, the hierarchy within the body is no flow, no go. Remember, we arent considered alive without brain activity. We can survive minutes without air, a few days without water and several weeks without food. So how does the communication get interfered with? Emotional stress, dietary/ chemical stress and physical stress interfere with this natural healthy state. Most commonly this happens near the spine through misalignments that disrupt your onboard, innate healing mechanism. Youre designed brilliantly to adapt to this world and myriad of challenges youll encounter. It happens from the inside-out.
www.naturespathways.com

Natures Pathways | April 2013

Another example could be the heart and its intricate nerve pathways connecting it to the brain. You can imagine how important the communication between the heart and the brain is in keeping you alive and healthy by adjusting for moment to moment demands in heart beat, heart rate, muscular contraction and the size of the blood vessels. The same can be said of your organs, glands and immune system. Your nerve system is the conduit transmitting messages at over 327 mph allowing you to shift with environmental demands. Imagine only being able to download three-fourths of your emails or hear a portion of a conversation. That just wouldnt cut it, eh? Since youre reading this publication, youre already aware and either searching for health care that fits your philosophy or knowing youre in the right place and this is confirmation of your belief in your innate wisdom. Does this sound too simple? Does it make sense? Over the next few months we will expand on the different parts of the nerve system and their roles in organ health. Until then, keep it simple.

Reducing your pets carbon pawprint

By Michelle Lonergan

Buy local

When at all possible, buy your products from local shops. Shopping at your neighborhood store saves fuel and therefore emits less carbon into our environment. Avoid buying online as more fuel is used to get your package to your doorstep. You can further reduce your pets carbon pawprints by purchasing foods made by local manufacturers. Look for foods that are produced in Wisconsin or the Midwest. Some brands to look for are Nutri Source, Fromm, Evangers, American Natural Premium,

When your pet consumes a more bio-available food, they produce less waste. When their food is fresher and made with more meat, it is absorbed in the body instead of going out the back end. This means less feces in our landfills. Feeding a raw meat diet balanced for your dog or cat is the most bio-available diet you can feed. You can also feed a fresh cooked diet balanced for your pet such as Deli-Fresh for Pets. If feeding a kibble diet fits your lifestyle better, look for foods that have a higher meat content and are not loaded with fillers. More specifically, look for grain-free diets that have a 60 percent and greater meat content.

Buy organic
Dog Training Pet Products

Holistic Pet Services and Supplies

Buying organic products is not only healthier for your pet, but also better for the environment. Chemically grown products destroy the natural mineral composition of our soil making it difficult to replenish. 100 percent organic pet foods are not widely available, however, there are many pet food companies using organic products in their recipes. Natural Planet Organics uses organic fruits, vegetables and grains. Stella & Chewys also uses organic vegetables and their meat is hormone and antibiotic-free.

Seeing the loving essence

The most basic heartcentered communication skill of spiritual psychology
By Rose Nicksic

piritual psychology is the healing process where an individual experiences a more joyous existence, recognizing and actualizing compassion and love towards others, self and life itself. In our means to self-discovery and desire to resolve issues in life, heart-centered communication is essential in the context of spiritual psychology. The very foundation of heart-centered communication is seeing the loving essence. The beauty of this skill is the very fact that it exists in all of us and is always made available to us when we choose to reside in our loving nature. The skill of seeing the loving essence is not a method or procedure, or anything you do. It truly has to do with how you are inside yourself while youre assisting another. It is an attitude that, when shared freely, is the starting point of a caring relationship and the essence of all healing. We are often given opportunities to assist family members, friends and loved ones. These opportunities may show up as a time of intense difficulty or simply a time when support and assistance is trusted in your hands. It is not unusual for any of us to find ourselves feeling a compulsion to tell someone what he or she should do or to think we should have a solution to anothers situation. Heart-centered communication or seeing the loving essence is the language of heartfelt loving. It is the very basic way of being, in our loving support and care. Being in our loving, we open our hearts to ourselves and to each other and share the essence of who we truly are. The message of the heart is not about solving peoples problems or fixing them, it is simply being with them.

realize that there is really nothing that needs fixing and nothing that needs doing in another soul. We see and listen with our heart. When we attune to our loving heart, we more fully awaken to our highest human qualities of compassion, forgiveness and mutual respect. We then are able to nurture these qualities in each individual. Seeing the loving essence is a very nurturing

Increase your chances for a better life with wellnessbased chiropractic

By Brian R. Wussow, DC

read a disturbing article in Business Week that described a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Internal Medicine edition, which states that baby boomers are less healthy than the previous generation at the same age. This is disconcerting, as this generation has always held quality of life and longevity as core values ironically, those born between 1946 and 1964 will indeed have a longer life, but it is questionable as to whether or not it will be at the quality levels initially intended. Especially at a time when health care costs are central to economic decision-making and given the size of the baby boom generation, it is of great concern that the degree of health is less than expected, which will increase the need for expensive heroic intervention in the future. Some areas where the fifty- and sixty-somethings fall short? While 32 percent of those who turned 54 between 1988 and 1994 reported excellent health, only 13 percent of those at the same age between 2007 and 2010 were able to make a similar claim. Incidence of obesity, hypertension and diabetes are up significantly, and the probability of walking with an assisting device like a cane or walker has ballooned to over twofold. While the boomers are less likely to smoke or suffer a heart attack, they are a third more likely to be obese and 50 percent more likely to suffer some kind of functional limitation. These dismal findings underscore the reason why chiropractors and natural healers of all kinds must marshal their forces and get their message out. The lead author on the study, Dr. Dana King from the West Virginia School of Medicine, states that the research demonstrates a clear need for policies that expand efforts at prevention and healthy lifestyle promotion in the baby boom generation. The more proactive baby boomers can be about developing optimal lifestyle habits, the less likely they will suffer from obesity, hypertension and the long list of lifestyle-related conditions. No one is in a better place to advise and lead in this department than

a wellness-based chiropractor. This essential information on healthy eating, exercising, stress reduction and, for goodness sake, keeping your nerve systems healthy with regular chiropractic care is key to experiencing a better quality of life. The evidence is mounting and its clear that the current path is taking people in the wrong direction. Estimates are that we will spend $2.8 TRILLION on health care this year in the U.S. Lets be honest, the vast majority of that will be spent on our disease care. The idea of better living through better chemistry has failed in the past, is failing now and will fail in the future. Research continues to prove that to experience the quality of life that we want and deserve, we must choose to take control and responsibility for our lifestyle. How we eat, how we move, how we think and the quality of our nerve systems are the four essential ingredients. Choose a wellness-based chiropractor that can help you with all of these and, rest assured, your chances of living the life of your dreams will go up exponentially!

Flush your pets waste

The pet market is flooded with biodegradable waste bags for your pet, which is great, but where are we disposing of them? If you are throwing your package in the garbage, it isnt biodegrading at all. In fact, the landfills are specifically designed with a shield to avoid anything from seeping into the earth. Alternatively, look for flushable waste bags, such as Flush Ems by Royal Pet. For your cat, purchase flushable cat litter made of corn or wheat. Common flushable cat litter brands are Worlds Best and Swheat Scoop.

Adopt a shelter pet & spay and neuter

Purchasing a pet from a breeder is supporting the reproduction of additional dogs and cats. Our world is overpopulated with unwanted dogs and cats, and as a result, hundreds a day are euthanized. Not only is this heartbreaking, but it also affects our environment, as the cremation of these animals produces toxic carbons into our air. A spayed or neutered pet is a more well-mannered animal, which may avoid some risky behaviors and reproducing more unwanted pets.

experience of providing a safe space from which honest and heartfelt communication can be shared. In this sense, the only language appropriate for two souls is heartfelt loving. In this opportunity of residing in our loving, always be conscious of being with another loving essence, calmly experiencing everything a personality is going through, no matter how upset the person may seem. In our mindfulness, regardless of what anyone says or does, you can still practice seeing the loving essence. The more you practice this, the less conflict you will have with others as well. As radiant divine spirits, having a human experience, we have opportunities to reside in all levels of consciousness and believing in others. Save your baby from diaper rash

By Rick Martin
iaper rash is so painful looking. Usually it is not something we need to call a doctor about in the middle of the night, but sometimes it feels like it is. According to Mayo Clinic, severe rashes that should be seen by a doctor include boils, rashes extending out beyond the diaper area, those with pus or weeping discharge, and those that cause unusual sleepiness. Heat, moisture and germs are the main causes of diaper rash, but food and medicine should also be watched. Mayo Clinic is very interested in how new foods affect a babys body. As they eat new foods and more solids, their stool content changes as well. This, in addition to more frequent stools, can lead to diaper rash. Also keep in mind that antibiotics kill bacteria the

good as well as the bad. When a baby takes antibiotics, the bacteria that control yeast growth are depleted. This results in yeast growth, which leads to diaper rash. Breastfed babies whose mothers are on antibiotics are also vulnerable. Mothering magazine drives home the idea that a dry (feeling) diaper is not a clean diaper. It is very important to change diapers after each wetting or bowel movement. Some people think that disposables can prolong a diaper change, but nothing could be further from the truth! We need to get the germs off of babys skin as soon as possible. Dr. William Sears recommends frequent changes as well especially in the early going when newborns have small frequent stools (this will slow down as baby

grows). He also recommends adding onehalf cup vinegar to the rinse cycle if you are home laundering cloth diapers. This helps remove alkaline irritants. Your diaper service can do this as well. If you are home laundering, take care to remove all detergent residues. Your machine is probably not as efficient at this as commercial machines; therefore, do-it-yourselfers should boil the diapers after the wash cycle for up to 15 minutes. Boiling will imitate the effectiveness of the commercial machines found at a diaper service or hospital to assure a germ-free and residue-free product for your child. Also, be careful with the plastic on disposables, which might look cool with the pretty pictures, but are actually quite good at heat generation (read: greenhouse effect.) Heat makes for an ideal environment for germs to grow. A nice tip provided by Baby Center to help get rid of diaper rash naturally is to allow baby to nap without a diaper on. After covering your mattress with a plastic sheet, open a couple cloth diapers and lay your child down. Watch for the moments just after she goes to sleep, because this is a common time for her to urinate. Now you can change the diapers and let her nap with a free flow of air to her skin! Now just be sure your caregivers know all of this information (remind them never to use talcum powder, too) and you are home free!

look for organic ingredients as much as possible and dont forget to exfoliate. Its always a good idea to cleanse your face in the evening to remove the days sweat and pollution accumulation. Plain sugar can be used in the shower once or twice a week to exfoliate your whole body. The easiest way to use it is to lather up and then grab handfuls of sugar and apply to your skin in a circular motion. Then just rinse it away, and be sure to moisturize when you are finished. Exfoliating not only helps remove dull, flaky skin, it also helps your moisturizer penetrate better and work more effectively.

Health and wellness Q&A

By Karmen Nenahlo

Question: If I get sick, will loading up on vitamin C help me get better sooner? Answer: Many people will start to worry about how much vitamin C they are consuming when they feel an illness coming on. For the most part, studies have shown little or no benefit. Consuming extra vitamin C after youre already showing signs and symptoms of an illness will not help you recover faster. However, for those that consume the proper amount of vitamin C regularly, this may help reduce the duration of a cold by about a day, and they may have fewer symptoms than a person not meeting their daily requirement. Unfortunately, relatively high doses of 1-2 grams may be needed to elicit these very mild benefits, so is it really worth it in the end? Keep in mind, the RDA for women is 75 milligrams per day and 90 milligrams per day for men. Vitamin C can be found in acidic foods such as oranges, strawberries and kiwis, and also in green, leafy vegetables. Its also found in citrus juices or those fortified with Vitamin C. Bottom line only you can decide if you want to dose up on vitamin C. It certainly wont cause any problems, but the minimal benefits may not justify the added expense. Question: I have taken some time off from the gym and gained some extra weight, not to mention the fact that I feel a bit weaker. Did all my muscle just turn to fat? Answer: This is a great question, and all too often it may seem like this is actually happening when people stop working out. However, muscle and fat are two completely different types of body tissue. Neither can simply turn into the other. When people stop working out for long periods, food intake should decrease because if youre not expending as many calories; you certainly dont need to consume as many calories. Its important to remember that the muscles in your body are

active tissues that are constantly using energy even when youre sedentary. This means the more muscle you have, the more calories you need. The opposite is true as well. Unfortunately, when workouts decline, people often consume the same amounts of food that they had been when they were working out. These extra calories are stored in your body as adipose tissue (body fat). If you make a conscious effort to consume fewer calories when you stop working out, then you should be able to avoid the added pounds. Question: Foods seem to be so high in salt these days, and Im aware of the dangers of hypertension, heart disease and stroke. Can you please clarify the amount of sodium I should be consuming daily? Answer: Youre right salt is everywhere. Processed foods are the main culprit, but the increased reliance on fast foods and restaurant meals are problematic as well. To add to the confusion, people often have trouble differentiating between sodium and salt. Salt is actually 40% sodium, so when discussing recommendations, we need to be clear about what were talking about. The current Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day (about 1 teaspoon of salt). On the other hand, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day (about 2/3 teaspoon of salt), and they set the tolerable upper intake level at 2,300 milligrams. Its clear that your intake should fall somewhere between these two ranges, or even less, but its actually quite difficult to keep your sodium level as low as 1500 milligrams per day. In fact, the IOM points out that 95% of American men and 75% of American women consume sodium in excess of the tolerable upper limit not good news for those of us looking to avoid chronic disease as we get older. In order to keep your sodium intake in check, you need to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and make sure you buy foods that are fresh and unprocessed. And dont forget to avoid adding salt at the dinner table as well.

Anatomy of a fall
By Jed Downs, MD, MPH
ver wonder what happened during that fall on the ice to make you feel out of sorts? Its potentially complicated. Here is a hypothetical answer: You slipped on the ice and landed on your butt. Your point of contact is asymmetrically on one of your sit bones. The skin and fat absorb a bit of the force, and then suddenly your body weight is focused at one spot on your pelvis. The bone absorbs shock, but the forces dont stop there. There is a shearing and twisting force that moves into your sacroiliac joint and the force is dissipated as the pelvis slides along the joint. The joint surfaces are no longer congruent, that is, they dont fit together or line up the way they are supposed to. There is a rotational twist that spins the sacrum. The lumbar spine twists and side bends in the opposite direction to maintain balance and normal physiological movement, but possibly too far. Meanwhile, when you reach out with your hand to break your fall, your wrist gets jammed, the elbow locks out and the forces transmit up the axis of the arm, sliding the ball of the shoulder up its plate-like socket; it bumps into the overhang of the shoulder blade above, bruising rotator cuff tendons. The muscles contract and absorb some of the force, but theyre attached to the thoracic spine and ribs, pulling them upwards with the elevating shoulder. Your neck snaps from side to side. The muscles get strained, the ribs are jerked into an elevated position and the vertebrae sidebend or twist and get stuck in less-than-ideal relationships with their neighbors. While these things are happening to the musculoskeletal system, a shock wave moves from your bum all the way up to the base of your skull. As the shockwave is coming up, the weight of the head is coming down, and they meet and jam where the cervical spine and skull come together, creating a compaction between those bones. The force continues into the head, twisting the skull plates so that the skull no longer expands and contracts in a symmetric fashion, and spinal fluid circulation is disturbed. Elsewhere, your liver and kidneys, being denser than other organs, have more downward momentum, and they strain their ligament attachments to your diaphragm and the abdominal wall. Your body is self-regulating and capable of self defense and repair. Many times it will be able to shrug off traumatic insults, but there
www.naturespathways.com

are times when the forces concentrate in ways that cause your tissues to become restricted or jammed, and the body is not capable of discerning its way out of the mess it just got itself into. As time goes on, acute pains are forgotten and scar tissue develops, but the after effects impact well-being maybe causing chronic pain, maybe leading to altered movement patterns during walking or exercise, impairing function or maybe leading to loss of range of motion. Consider osteopathic manipulative therapy as a means of assisting your body back to function and health. Osteopathy is a Western medical system that takes a whole body approach to assessment and to treatment. The practitioner uses their hands, eyes and experience to examine and mentally map the regions of impaired joint and tissue relationships, and determines which are the most significant. He or she then determines a treatment priority strategy and starts the process of taking away the layers of injury, giving the body as much freedom as possible to find its way back to function and health. This can involve mobilization/manipulation of the spine, pelvis, ribs or extremities. It may involve gently taking the body into a position of ease so that the body can untie and reorganize itself, or stretching or pumping of tissues to normalize length relationships. Cranial osteopathy (the origin of cranial sacral therapy) is another option to free up subtle movements of the skull. Treatment may involve freeing and repositioning organs, or restoring space for fluids that lubricate the organs so they can slide by each other. People are not like Humpty Dumpty, and often they can be put back together again.
Jed Downs, MD, MPH, has been studying osteopathy since 1995. Formerly he worked in occupational medicine until pursuing his passion full-time at Madison Manual Medicine, 1709 Monroe Street in Madison. He uses osteopathic techniques to manage consequences (pain and loss of function) of trauma regardless of etiology, be it birth, sport, MVA, repetitive strain or living life. The 80/20 rule applied to weight loss

By Tony Bednarowski

his is a somewhat touchy subject for me to cover, but since Im asked about it so often, I feel it is imperative to enlighten you on it. Weve all heard of the 80/20 rule. This rule can be applied to many things in life, from economics, business and marketing, to health care and even relationships. But what does it actually mean when applied to weight loss? As youve probably noticed, even though I am a master trainer and a nutrition expert, I dont really talk about exercise nearly as often as I do nutrition. Obviously, exercise and general physical activity are important and have many health benefits, like facilitating weight loss. The reason I dont talk about this much is because I am nearly

100 percent certain that exercise and/or some form of daily physical activity will naturally become part of your overall maintenance plan. Thats how confident I am in your willingness to find your way to becoming more physically active. I dont even have to stress it. With that being said, the 80/20 rule certainly does apply here. Eighty percent of your weight-loss success will come directly through your nutritional choices and 20 percent will be aided by your activity level. Yes, that is correct; the biggest impact on achieving your weight loss goal will undoubtedly come from your nutritional choices. In fact, after more than 20 years of helping people achieve their weightloss goals, I rarely have to try to convince someone to incorporate an exercise plan into the equation. Once I get a person on the right track nutritionally and they start to see the weight come off, nearly 100 percent of the time they naturally migrate to some type of exercise plan and become more physically active. Its truly amazing to witness this process and see a person adopt a whole new lifestyle all from changing what they put into their body.

A closer look at physical activity and exercise

Physical activity is different from exercise. Physical activity is defined as being active throughout the day by not leading a sedentary lifestyle, whereas exercise is a planned activity such as running, cycling, aerobics and strength training. Physical activity will become effortless once youve actually seen and felt change take place. On the other hand, when looking at incorporating some sort of exercise program into your newly found lifestyle, please take it slow, especially if youve been inactive for some time or have never exercised before. Dont take the all-or-nothing approach. Incorporate a sound plan and adapt it to your personality, lifestyle, schedule and disposition. This way you will incorporate it into your lifestyle and make it a permanent aspect of your life. So there you have it. With the right balance of good nutrition and physical activity, weight-loss success can be yours!

Fat loss physiology

Why diets dont work
By Leia McCumber
hy do we get fat? And when we try to lose it, why do most of us fail or revert back? If we look at how our caveman ancestors lived and how our physiology seeks homeostasis, it is easy to see how diets are often unsuccessful in the long run. The human body works to keep us at just the right weight and body fat. Our fat cells secrete a hormone called leptin. When we become lean, our fat is lower and, subsequently, less leptin is produced and sent to the hypothalamus, the portion of the brain that controls hunger and metabolism. When this happens, the hypothalamus decreases thyroid activity, down regulating our metabolism, and also sends out hormones such as ghrelin and neuropeptide Y (NPY), which make us hungry. If we go back to our caveman, it makes sense to decrease his metabolism in famine, and increase his hunger to seek his next meal. His body wants him to get back to a body fat that will support famine or the long winter. Much like the body becomes resistant to insulin in type 2 diabetes, it also becomes leptin resistant. This is due to things such as a sedentary lifestyle, overconsumption of processed carbohydrates, chronic stress and toxicity. Luckily, reversing leptin resistance can be accomplished by paying attention to the aforementioned lifestyle factors. Maintaining regular physical activity, increasing whole food consumption instead of processed foods, dealing with stress and decreasing alcohol consumption will go a long way in dealing with leptin resistance. So, getting to our main point; why do diets fail? Essentially the same physiological mechanism that kept our caveman at the right body fat still exists in our bodies today. When we begin to go into famine, which in modern day is merely caloric restriction through decreasing food consumption, our bodies natural mechanisms sense this over time and decrease metabolism. To compound this, dieters try to create a caloric deficit by increasing activity, and in many cases this takes the form of long-duration aerobic exercise. Now think about it, if our caveman were in famine, would he go for a jog to expend energy, or conserve it? To do this, our body has to release cortisol, a stress hormone that helps liberate fat, glucose and protein from muscle to provide us with energy. The only bad thing is that this hormone also likes to deposit fat in the abdominal region when elevated! While this is all happening, our body is in a net protein loss, which leads to loss of muscle. Our body also begins to send out the hunger signals as it senses famine.
www.naturespathways.com

So thats where the common day dieter is left: sporting a decreased metabolism, increased hunger for bad food options, increased circulating stress hormones and decreased muscle mass. Not a good situation for maintaining the possible weight lost. The truth is that its not about a number, its not about weight loss, its about fat loss. Its not about the mindset of a diet but a change in a lifestyle. Successful and maintained fat loss is achieved slower and through making changes in lifestyle to increasing physical activity, making better food choices, decreasing stress and being practical about what can be achieved. Long, drawn-out aerobic sessions are not the way to go. While maintaining aerobic fitness is important, one can do so by maintaining a progressive resistancetraining program that includes shorter, more relatively intense bouts of activity. This maintains muscle mass and decreases the chronic stress response brought about by long-duration cardio. Also, a grocery list that includes plenty of sources of protein, fruits, vegetables, some nuts, seeds and healthy oils, while staying away from more processed foods found in boxes and bags, will go a long way. Accountability and assistance from a fitness professional, family and friends will be a big help as well. Be strong, keep fit and stay healthy!

Kids can play safe when participating in sports

he spring sports season is a popular time for school-aged children. After a few months of being cooped up indoors, many kids are ready to spend time in the fresh air. Organized team sports are one way they can burn energy and learn lessons in camaraderie and problem-solving. Spring sports season presents a host of opportunities for athletic youngsters. But the secret to a successful season has little to do with wins and losses and a lot to do with making sure children have fun and take the necessary precautions to reduce their risk of injury on the playing field. According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, nearly 40 million children and adolescents participate in organized sports across North America each year. Although sports are an ideal way to socialize and get much-needed exercise, they also can increase participants risk of suffering a sports-related injury. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that millions of children age 15 and under are treated in hospital emergency rooms for sports-related injuries every year. Some of the more common injuries include sprains and strains, growth plate injuries, repetitive motion injuries and heat-related illness. Certain sports go hand-in-hand with the spring season. Here is a look at some popular spring sports and how to reduce a childs risk of suffering some of the more common injuries associated with those sports.

Natures Pathways | April 2013

Baseball/softball

The start of the spring season coincides with the commencement of the professional baseball season. Therefore, many schools and towns have baseball and softball leagues that also begin once the weather warms up. Baseball and softball are popular sports. However, each sport involves sliding, running, fast-moving balls and long hours out in the elements. Each of these activities can cause injury, and some of the more common injuries associated with baseball and softball include soft tissue strains, fractures after being hit by a ball, sunburn and heat fatigue. Children who are playing baseball or softball should always wear the recommended safety equipment. This includes a batting helmet, shin guards, athletic supporters, sunscreen, mouth guards and eye protection. Proper stretching and warm-ups can make muscles and tendons limber before play.

Lacrosse

Lacrosse is a game that marries elements of basketball, football and hockey. Players throw and catch a small, hard, rubber ball with a netted stick, called a crosse. Lacrosse is a contact sport; therefore, protective gear is essential to prevent injury. Players must wear helmets, typically with a safety grill over the face for boys. A mouthpiece, gloves and padding can be worn to further prevent injuries.

Track and field

Soccer

Soccer has long been a popular sport around the world, and interest in the sport has grown considerably in the United States. Soccer is ideal for developing handeye coordination. The constant running involved also makes it one of the best spring sports for kids in terms of overall exercise. Due to the constant movement involved with soccer, players should regularly rehydrate. Shin guards can prevent injuries and bruising to the legs, while wearing sunscreen will protect kids from sun exposure.

Some athletes excel in track and field. Although less combative than other sports discussed and with little or no risk of contactrelated injury, there are still some dangers inherent to track and field. Strains and sprains from falls or rolling ankles are common. Safety precautions for track and field competitors revolve heavily around the athletes conditioning. Allow for ample warm-up periods and make sure athletes always wear supportive footwear. Players should always consume a good deal of water or other fluids to remain hydrated and take sufficient breaks when the weather is warm. Spring sports are popular for children of all ages. When the weather warms, the desire to get out on the field and engage in play increases. Adults can safeguard their children by ensuring the rules of the game are met and that the proper safety equipment is always used.

What you need to know about lab tests

By Dr. Steve Puckette
hy do I still feel sick if my lab tests came back normal? Excellent question! Laboratory ranges are calculated using a bell curve, so that 95 percent of the test results fall into the normal range. You have to be an A+ sick person to reach that outlying 5 percent where you are labeled as having a problem. The treatments available to those in the 5 percent often involve medications. Medicine is very careful about prescribing medications, as most of them come with possible side effects. Alternative practitioners look at a more narrow range of lab results, called the functional range. It is possible that your test results have come back within the normal range of the laboratory range, but outside of the optimal functional range. This zone is an area where your body is not functioning as optimally healthy. This is what I call normal sick. If your lab results fall into this zone, you may still experience symptoms. This is the area where holistic intervention can be beneficial. By supporting you metabolically, nutritionally and structurally, your body has the opportunity to function in a more balanced state and begin the healing process itself. In our previous articles dealing with thyroid and metabolism, we referenced several types of testing available to help determine where the break-downs in your body are. The most energy-sensitive part of your body is the nervous system and the brain. The brain weighs only three pounds. If the rest of your body was as metabolically active as your brain, you would be about the
www.naturespathways.com

size of a 15-pound baby and still be taking in as many calories per day as you are now. A healthy nervous system requires two things, fuel and activation. Your metabolism converts the food you eat into the energy or fuel, that your body needs. In order for that to happen, you need healthy guts and a well-functioning digestive system. Healthy guts act much like the screen on a screen door, letting fresh air in and keeping bugs out. If you have leaky gut syndrome, it is just like having a hole in your screen door. Food allergies and leaky gut syndrome make up a vicious cycle. To make improvements in one area, you need to make improvements in both. The CYREX blood tests indicate whether or not you have leaky gut syndrome and also identify specific food components to which you may be reacting. If you continue to eat the foods you are reacting to, every meal triggers an autoimmune response that will contribute to the leaky gut syndrome, which leads to further inflammation in the digestive system. For more information, please visit www.Cyrexlabs.com. The Metametrix 2105 test looks for parasites, yeast and fungus in your intestines by examining a stool sample. Some parasites do not grow well on a medium and can only be found if they can be cultured and grown. This test is a CSI-type test that actually looks for the DNA of various parasites in a frozen stool sample. For more information, please visit www.Metametrix.com. The Diagnostechs ASI test checks cortisol and hormone levels, particularly adrenal and

sex hormones, as these hormones impact metabolic function. The ASI test assesses if the adrenal glands are overactive, indicating you are chronically stressed, or underactive, indicating you have been stressed for so long that you are now in adrenal exhaustion. These test results will also indicate whether or not your brain is having difficulty coordinating your adrenal glands. For more information, please visit www.Diagnostechs.com. In addition, a chem 55 panel can be ordered to look at the following markers, among others:

Making

connections in Wisconsin
By Jackie Peters

Natalie Pratt of Healthy Living Events, LLC is bringing communities together

For a community to be whole and healthy, it must be based on peoples love and concern for each other. Millard Fuller
eeting Natalie Pratt of Oshkosh, you quickly pick up on the fact that she is a hard-working woman with great concern for the well-being of her community. Shortly thereafter, youll realize that she is most definitely a planner and knows how to get things done! Pratt certainly shines as the expo coordinator for her business, Healthy Living Events, LLC (the second of her two full-time jobs). Starting out on this journey, the Wisconsin native seemed to identify opportunities where many did not. For example, upon learning about the 2009 local screening of the movie Fresh, a documentary that celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system, Pratt stepped in and organized a farm market for local organic farmers to display their offerings to complement the movie. She saw importance in community members having the ability to immediately connect with local healthy food suppliers after the showing. Her knack for identifying and organizing local healthy-living events like this one, led to her involvement in larger and larger gatherings over the years today reaching capacity of Sunnyview Expo Center in Oshkosh. In addition, her outreach is now expanding into the Milwaukee, Madison and Wausau areas. Pratts goal with her expo work is to encourage the people of Wisconsin to embrace lives of health and wellness through awareness of natural, organic and alternative products, education, nutrition and exercise, as well as the benefits of living clean, green and healthy lifestyles.

Natural Product & Organic Food Expo

Next up for Pratt is the Natural Product & Organic Food Expo on May 4 in Oshkosh. This educational event brings together Wisconsin and national companies that specialize in natural and organic products and food, as well as green and eco-friendly products for the home, pets and the whole family. It features a farmers market where visitors can meet and buy direct from Wisconsinbased organic farmers and vendors. This includes offerings such as grassfed beef, free-range chicken, organic fruit and vegetables, as well as information about CSAs. Visitors can choose to learn more about topics like: gardening and growing; building greenhouses and garden structures; natural supplements, clothing, household products and toys; earth-sheltered homes and log cabins; aquaponics and hydroponics; foods that heal; outdoor cooking; urban farming; sustainable and natural living skills; wilderness camping; hobby and backyard farming; and much more!

It can be overwhelming to consider all of the choices available to assist individuals in losing weight, eating better and getting healthy. As Pratt explains, I wanted to surround myself with good choices, and the more I learned the magnitude of whats out there in my own backyard, the more I was shocked and hungry to learn more. Wisconsin is full of companies that sell amazing healthy products. So spreading the word became her driving passion. Her concern for others is clearly reflected in her current offerings, with expos focusing on living green, natural health, sports and fitness, fair trade, natural products and organic food. Pratt is excited about the extent of her subject matter and the opportunity it presents her to connect all of the expo visitors with local health-minded exhibitors. It is gratifying to be able to bring communities together in this way. To see individuals receive education about ensuring healthier, sustainable alternatives for their families, and healthy-living educators meet people who have questions about their products and services, explains Pratt. She also shows her concern for community by being selective with exhibitors. Pratt makes it clear that her expos are value-based events and has clear expectations for them, as reflected in her code of conduct. She challenges her exhibitors not to be salespeople, but instead, educators. In exchange, Pratt is able to offer the perfect place for representatives of healthconscious businesses from around the state to meet thousands of consumers who have an interest in making connections with businesses such as theirs. She also offers helpful exhibitor success tips on her website. Sponsorships are available as well. Pratt makes it a priority to ensure her expos are family friendly events and uses her planning skills and creativity to make them fun for all. Popular activities include recycled furniture contests, recycled art contests, Miss Go Green pageants and face painting, to name a few. With the majority of Americans now giving more serious consideration to eating healthier, exercising consistently and being more socially responsible, there is a growing need for education and identification of resources. Through Healthy Living Events, LLC and great determination and perseverance Pratt is able to present and promote healthier, more efficient and more ecologically sound information, products and services that enhance lifestyles and create a better future for all of us in Wisconsin. There are so many valuable resources for those who want to make healthy choices right here in our Wisconsin communities, she says. There just needs to be more awareness.

Grow and eat organic!

By Debi Morton
pring is here and that means its time to plant and grow this years bounty. Whether you are a farmer, market or home gardener, or just love to buy great vegetables, going organic provides many benefits, including better quality of food, our good health as well as a healthier ecosystem. Rubbing shoulders with 3,100 people interested in organic farming this past weekend at the 2013 MOSES conference (Midwest Organic & Sustainable Education Services) in La Crosse, Wisconsin, gave me renewed appreciation for all the efforts being made to broaden organic methods and buying options. This conference is one of the largest in the United States. It was great to see so many people dedicated to learning and improving sustainable practices. There were workshops on soils, market farming, livestock, business, field crops, research, transitioning to organics and idea generation sessions. Here are just a few facts about organic growing you might be interested in when considering organics for purchase or in how you grow your food: On health: Antioxidants are found in fruits and vegetables, and they are powerful allies in combating inflammation, heart disease and cancer, in addition to helping us age gracefully. Antioxidants dont last long in our bodies, so maintaining those means eating fruits and vegetables daily. The foods that have the highest concentration of antioxidants are the dark green and red fruits and vegetables, such as broccoli, kale, spinach, blueberries, raspberries,

tomatoes and peppers. Studies show that 61 percent more vitamins and minerals are found in organic vegetables compared to nonorganic! And organic fruits and vegetables have one-third more antioxidant levels than conventionally raised produce.1 On soil and energy: In good weather, yields for conventional corn and soybeans are comparable to organically grown; however, in a drought, organic soils are 28-70 percent more productive than conventional soils.2 Healthy soils also isolate carbon, which is a key climate issue. Organic farming strategies that incorporate soil building practices, such as crop rotation and use of cover crops and manure, are excellent at isolating carbons. On pesticides: Many people wonder if they can peel nonorganic fruits and vegetables to reduce pesticide risk. The answer is NO! About 20 percent of currently registered pesticides are called systemics. Systemic pesticides move into the plant through the root system, travel throughout the plant and move into surface tissues, where they either stop viral pathogens from growing, or kill or repel insects. Some pesticides are 100% systemic, others are partially systemic. That means, even if you peel nonorganic veggies, they might still contain pesticides.3 On cost: Why does organic food sometimes cost more? According to the Organic Center, Prices for organic foods reflect many of the same costs as conventional items in terms of growing, harvesting, transportation and storage. Organically produced foods must meet stricter regulations governing all of these steps, so the process

is often more labor- and management-intensive, and farming tends to be on a smaller scale. There is also mounting evidence that if all the indirect costs of conventional food production cleanup of polluted water, replacement of eroded soils, costs of health care for farmers and their workers were factored into the price of food, organic foods would cost the same or, more likely, be cheaper.3 Growing organically can have health benefits not only to you but also to the environment. Instead of using pesticides, try natural alternatives. Instead of using chemical fertilizers, use compost and mulch. Hawthorn
(Crataegus laevigata)

awthorn is a spiny, flowering shrub or small tree of the rose family. The species of hawthorn discussed here are native to northern European regions and grow throughout the world. Historically, hawthorn fruit has been used for heart disease since the first century. It has also been used for digestive and kidney problems. More recently, the hawthorn leaf and flower have been used as folk or traditional remedies for heart failure, a weakness of the heart muscle that prevents the heart from pumping enough blood to the rest of the body, which can lead to fatigue and limit physical activities. Hawthorn is also used for other heart conditions, including symptoms of coronary artery disease (such as angina). The hawthorn leaf and flower are used to make liquid extracts, usually with water and alcohol. Dry extracts can be put into capsules and tablets.

What the science says

There is scientific evidence that the hawthorn leaf and flower may be safe and effective for milder forms of heart failure, but study results are conflicting. There is not enough scientific evidence to determine whether hawthorn works for other heart problems. NCCAM-supported research to date includes a study of the mechanism by which hawthorn may affect heart failure.

Tell all your health care providers about any complementary health practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.

Side effects and cautions

Hawthorn is considered safe for most adults when used for short periods of time. Side effects are rare and can include upset stomach, headache and dizziness. Although drug interactions with hawthorn have not been thoroughly studied, there is evidence to suggest that hawthorn may interact with a number of different drugs, including certain heart medications.

How Yoga Works

A novel that delves into the whole of yoga
By Meg Groves
How Yoga Works

by Michael Roach should occupy a space on every yogis bookshelf because its a perfect companion to your practice and journey towards a deeper understanding of yoga and meditation. It beautifully and humbly reveals whats happening while youre practicing yoga and how to get the most out of it as you go along. This book is not an instructional manual on poses and breathing. The authors concept of writing this book in the form of a novel makes it more attractive to read and the yoga philosophy more accessible.

Because the physical poses of yoga have become well-known and practiced in our Western culture, its important to have a reference that provides insight into the rest of the yoga story and how it works. Its a gentle, loving story with many twists and turns, that leaves you wondering how you saw the world before picking it up. Its a slow read because every page is steeped in yoga wisdom and makes you want to stop, take a deep breath and think about what you just read. Its a story about healing and energy, about how we become imprisoned by our thoughts and how we can go about freeing ourselves from them. When you read this story, youll come to know and care about the characters and their circumstances, and as a result, the principles

of yoga become real, rounded-out and alive. As we come to understand how the characters in the book are transformed by yoga, we gain an understanding of what kind of person we are building in our own practice. How Yoga Works is a perfect choice for a book club. It will allow even more intricacies and wisdom to jump off the pages. It leads to lively, energizing discussion with many aha, now I get it moments.

Spring into a new you

By Casey Zimmerman, MBA, ACE-CPT

pring has arrived (hopefully!) and your New Years resolutions may be long gone now that it has been a few months since the ball dropped. The hustle and bustle of daily life has taken over and is charging forward like a speeding train. Before you completely give up on those resolutions and revert back to those old habits, take a minute today to reconsider your New Years goals and decide whether they are worth revisiting. Its never too late to spring into a new you by jump-starting your resolutions starting right now! Here are some guidelines to get you started once again on the path to overall health and wellness for your mind and body:
Release mind and body tension:

be very difficult to focus on the big picture and take the steps necessary to accomplish your goals. The repetitive routine of everyday life can take a toll on your body. Before you know it, you are playing catchup in every aspect of your life. To stay on top of the game, both mentally and physically, while consistently working toward your overall goals, it is important to adopt a healthy and fit lifestyle. It should incorporate well-rounded nutrition with regularly scheduled fitness activities and include mental and emotional outlets.
Spring into your New Years resolutions with vigor: Remem-

She was determined and passionate and thats all she needed. She inspires people to do the same in their lives, whether its getting back in shape, losing a few pounds or running their first 5K. Achieving a goal, big or small, is a great accomplishment and keeps us hungry for more! For more information, visit www.BodyFitSolutions.com or call 608.203.8600.

Whether you sit at a desk all day or are balancing a chaotic schedule full of personal and professional obligations, the mind and body can quickly build up tension. When you are burdened with a lot of tension, its easy to lose sight of your goals and aspirations. To stay on track to accomplishing your New Years resolutions, make it a point to regularly release your pressure and tension in a healthy way. Start and end each day with slow, deep breathing exercises to keep you focused on your goals. Find a tension outlet like an activity or sport to routinely release your mind and bodys tension.
Stay healthy and active: When

your mind and body are sedentary, it can

ber that your goals and aspirations should be choices and never punishment. Dont think of it as, I have to exercise or I have to eat healthy. If you see your goals from a negative perspective, you will be less likely to follow through. Think back to why you originally made those specific goals. Why do you want those things for yourself? Look at them in a positive way and envision how you will feel once you accomplish those goals. Once you see what youre really striving for, build a positive foundation to get yourself there and achieve that end goal. If you are ready to embark on the journey of accomplishing overall health and wellness for your mind and body, its time to revive those New Years resolutions and make them a priority for the remainder of the year.

Five hidden roadblocks to weight loss

By Dennis Kotnour
ouve heard the formula for losing weight is calories in/calories out, right? Master that and youre on your way to weight loss success. Not so fast! Weight loss has become a bit more complicated in our stress and toxin-filled society. Although a good diet and consistent exercise are the foundation for losing weight, there can often be sub-clinical issues that slow things down. If you have been struggling with weight loss, these five hidden roadblocks are worth looking into:
1. Poor digestion

body sends out strong craving messages because it thinks it is starving, and second, it is less likely to release fat for the same reason. Some people may not even notice this, but the fact is, after the age of 25, our bodys ability to break down foods decreases.
Solution: A good digestive enzyme taken with your largest meal will break down foods (carbohydrates, proteins and fats) in the stomach and small intestine, and will vastly improve the breakdown and assimilation of your food. Now, your cells feel full, and they are more likely to release excess fat. This also helps to satisfy those cravings and helps you stick to your eating plan and reach your goals faster!

2. Imbalanced hormones

Poor digestion will deprive your cells of receiving the proper amount of nutrients. The negative effects of starving your cells of nutrients are twofold: First, your

If your hormones are out of balance, your body will hold on to more fat and retain more fluid by flooding fat cells with the wrong message. This can slow weight loss or, even worse, cause you to gain weight. Chronic stress can deplete the body of the ingredients needed to make the stress hormone cortisol. Without enough of those natural ingredients, the body steals progesterone and converts it to cortisol so the body can survive. Progesterone is a natural fat burner and diuretic. With low levels of progesterone, the opposing estrogen hormone becomes dominant, which causes the body to hold on to fat and retain fluid. Resulting symptoms include feeling bad emotionally,

Find your healing power with Spiritual Response Technique

By Sonya Theis

piritual Response Technique (SRT) is a healing modality that was developed by Robert E. Detzler and was first taught in 1988. Robert had been a presenter and teacher of the principles of SRT in the United States and many other countries up until his retirement this year. By 2010, the Spiritual Response Association had students and practitioners residing in 34 countries. To find out more information on the history of SRT, you can visit the Associations website at www.spiritualresponse.com. The principles of SRT are based on the belief that we as spiritual beings are here learning lessons on Earth in this lifetime to allow our souls to grow and develop, and that we have experienced previous incarnations in the spiritual and incarnational realms that established negative energy and limited beliefs within us. These beliefs can be present in this lifetime and prevent us from reaching our fullest potential in our lives. That is why the purpose of the Spiritual Response Association, along with SRT, is to create a positive future for those who have had these negative obstacles removed. This healing work has assisted thousands of people in releasing the negative energy related to habits, attitudes, and emotional and physical issues. It has given them the opportunity to receive their greatest good in life, balance, and feel joy and harmony. The clearing is accomplished by dowsing (use of a pendulum) and utilizing specialized charting created by Robert. This is a technique that bypasses the conscious mind, connects with the subconscious

and uses guidance from higher self (spirit) to research soul records. The pendulum moves by way of the autonomic response system and with this muscle response, the pendulum points to information on the charts. Once research has been done to find the negative blocks and programs, a clearing is done. That negative energy is replaced with positive energy and feelings of inner peace. This work can only be done on a person who has given consent to participate, so with that in mind, the clearing work can be accomplished by a one-on-one session or remotely with a SRT practitioner. The Spiritual Response Association has guidelines that maintain a high level of ethics and standards. This is accomplished through a curriculum of workshops that can be found on their website, certification guidelines, monthly updates on new information through newsletters, SRA staff support and having to follow a code of conduct. It is through this tool of SRT and its energetic healing based in love for spirit that we find the healing power that is within all of us.
Sonya Theis, SRT practitioner, is owner of Rooted Spirit Wholeness Center, located at 6670 University Ave., Suite 102, in Middleton, Wis. She is certified in spiritual restructuring and Reiki II, a student of SRT intensive skills and a teacher of dowsing. Sonyas spiritual clearings through SRT direct Spirit to inner peace by replacing negative energies with positive. For more information, call 608.220.0406 or visit www.rooted-spirit.com.

A monthly advice column for your energy system

Everything in the universe contains energy, yet energy is something many of us dont understand. Every month Tina Bensman, a practicing clairvoyant and energy healer, is here to answer any questions you have about your energy system. Topics may include energy anatomy, dream analysis, chakra balancing, manifestation, life patterns, etc. The ideas written here do not replace medical attention. Always listen to your body, mind and intuition when receiving advice of any kind. Dear Tina, Since I was a teenager I have dealt with a bad upper back. Now in my 50s, I not only have pain, but also notice that my posture is hunched forward making it difficult to straighten out. I am currently working on exercises to stretch this area, but it feels like something is going on more than physically. When I stretch my back, I also feel anxiety rising in my heart. It begins to beat faster and Im short of breath. This makes me not want to do the exercises, which then puts me on a cycle of not healing the issue. Whats going on here? Anxious Hunchback Dear Anxious Hunchback, Well, it appears that around the time the issue began, your heart (4th) chakra was hit with some sort of trauma. Now, a trauma doesnt have to be dramatic and serious. Trauma just refers to an energy that someone or something threw at you. I would guess that there was a romantic relationship issue just before you began feeling the upper back problem develop, possibly a break-up or unrequited love. Whatever the situation, it seems like it caused you to want to protect your heart expression. The front of our chakras express who we are and how we are currently feeling. By hunching your upper back, you are essentially creating a shell of protection around the front of your chest, thus closing off your expression. This is so very common when we are relationally affected because

of fear of rejection, fear of vulnerability, etc. This arched back (closing off of the front) has also created a large opening of the back of your 4th chakra, allowing too much energy to enter unprotected. The backs of chakras allow new, replenished, evolved energy to come in, but if it is un-boundaried, you could also be bringing in energy that isnt you. To sum it all up, your 4th chakra is likely bringing in too much energy and is unable to process or express it. To remedy the situation, you definitely want to heal this from all angles. When you are doing your physical exercises for your upper back, work simultaneously with releasing from the front of your chest. You can see, hear or feel energy releasing out your heart space. Take your time and pay attention to what you notice. What does it feel like as it releases? Is it hard, fluid, cold or sticky? Have fun exploring. Although this issue has caused you hardship, the healing process doesnt have to. Play and discover what you can do for yourself now and in the future. Tina Bensman
Tina Bensman, a Madison-based intuitive counselor and energy healer, is a lifelong student of the paranormal. She had her first clairvoyant vision at a young age and continues to see and hear energy. Tina is trained in clairvoyant reading and many modalities of energy healing, but through professional training she was disappointed in the methods many schools used to devalue everyones natural gifts. Tina started The Chakra House to teach how natural and easy it is to work with energy. She believes that everyone has natural psychic gifts and can access their abilities if they realized their potential.

bad PMS, depression, anxiety and lack of motivation and willpower, which can also hinder your weight loss efforts.
Solution: A hormone health assessment followed up with simple lifestyle changes and all-natural hormone balancing creams are a safe and proven solution. Using a time-released cream that clears your system in 24-36 hours (meaning it will not build up), will give you the support you need without the unhealthy side effects of synthetic hormone replacements. 3. A congested lymphatic system

(upper chest and lower groin). This can be done with a natural-bristled back brush using a technique called dry brushing. Light strokes moving up the legs and arms towards the heart for three to five minutes before a shower will aid in moving static lymph and help break up cellulite. An even more effective solution is an FDAapproved vacuum massage called Synergie that helps move your toxic lymph and break down cellulite so you lose inches and feel more confident!
4. Weak liver function

5. Emotional stress overload

Besides the obvious stress and pressures of the day that may lead to binge eating, many times emotional issues can cause the body to hold on to more weight as a form of protection. When every other tool is being utilized to lose weight, this one needs to be considered.
Solution: Although emotional healing

The lymphatic system keeps your body clean and free from toxins by filtering them out of your blood. Fluid retention and excessive cellulite are signs your lymph system is not working as efficiently as it could be.
Solution: The only way to remove

Your liver is the main organ of detoxification, and if overloaded with toxins, its function may be compromised. A compromised liver can affect your bodys ability to lose weight.
Solution: Start by making dietary

may be achieved through meditation/prayer or by working with a therapist, a good place to start is by relaxing your body and listening to soothing music. This will help clear your mind to think of possible issues that may be getting in the way of your weight loss success. It can also lower your blood pressure and stress hormones!

Get shakin to relieve stress!

By Jacy Sundlie
TRE (tension and trauma releasing exercises) is built on the premise that it is completely natural for the body to move towards a fetal response or position in relation to stress, anxiety and trauma. It is likewise just as natural to have the shaking/tremor release response after the perceived threat is gone. Dr. David Berceli

haking/tremoring is the natural response of the body to reduce the high arousal state of a stressful or traumatic experience and to reduce the physical contraction of the body. So what exactly is the definition of stress and trauma as it relates to TRE? Stress is any experience that changes ones normal coping mechanism. This may be expressed through changes in breathing, blood pressure and patience levels, or anything that is out of normal for ones self. Trauma is defined as any experience that overwhelms ones coping mechanism, as defined above. Vicarious trauma is any unconscious effect on ones thinking due to exposure to other peoples traumatic experiences or stories. Watching or listening to the news is a good example of this. Compassion fatigue is any intense emotional experience in which ones emotions are suppressed or unacknowledged at the time of the experience. Some examples include first responders,

police officers, hospital ER personnel, soldiers or social workers. Anyone who needs to put aside their personal feelings and emotions in order to assist anothers immediate needs. Transgenerational trauma is trauma passed down from one generation to another. This type of trauma occurs without direct trauma stimulus, but is passed from a parent who has experienced a traumatic event. Shaking/tremoring is a fabulous way to release stress from muscles, lubricate joints and get ones circulation going. Shaking relieves anxiety, reduces tension, lets ones thinking mind take a break and releases inner dams so natural, healthy energy can move freely.

Why is shaking/tremoring so great?

1. Shaking is one of the natural ways your brilliant body rids itself of stress. Stress literally

gets stuck in the body. Stress hormones, muscular tension and tight shallow breathing stay stuck in the body after even a mildly stressful event. The damaging effects of stress remain in the body for years, even for the rest of ones life, unless there is a way to clean it out. Shaking is one of the most effective and powerful stress cleaners. Animals, from rabbits to polar bears, know this and shake dozens of times a day to clear away the effects of trauma and stress. Children know this and naturally shake and wiggle away their tension until they are taught to sit still. The body also knows the healing power of shaking, but like most

Baby boomer health

By Jack A. Erb
ith baby boomers retiring at the rate of 10,000 a day well into 2029, we all need to step it up in the natural healing arena. Information I am getting from several different reliable sources says that drugs (statins more specifically) are ruining an otherwise good retirement. Last February, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration placed a warning label on all statin drugs stating that they may cause diabetes, muscle disorders and cognitive problems such as memory loss and confusion. The best advice is to get off statins if at all possible. There are alternatives to lowering your cholesterol. If you have high cholesterol and your doctor has you on Lipitor, Crestor or Zocor, you may want to get another opinion. Only about two percent of people are helped by these drugs. If you are concerned about cholesterol levels, take some time to educate yourself about cholesterol. The liver produces about 75 percent of cholesterol, while 25 percent comes from food. It is only slightly water soluble, so it is carried through the bloodstream via lipoproteins, a blend of proteins and lipids (fats). You do not get elevated cholesterol from eating fat. Dietary cholesterol (from food) accounts for no more than ten percent of blood cholesterol. Cholesterol is so important, the body produces 3,000 to 4,000 mg of it each and every day. Ancel Keys, the father of the cholesterol-heart disease hypothesis, said in 1997, There is no connection whatsoever between the cholesterol in food and cholesterol in the blood, and weve known that all along. Makes one go hmm, doesnt it? The medical profession generally defines hypocholesterol as being below 160 mg/dL, but recent research suggests that people with cholesterol levels below 200 are unhealthy. A range of 175-275 should be considered within normal, non-pathological levels. The dangers of low cholesterol include: depression and suicide; violence and neurological disorders; cancer; infertility; and death by heart attack or stroke. If youre a baby boomer, review your cholesterol levels, blood pressure, weight and glucose levels with your doctor. Ask if you would benefit from taking niacin supplements to raise your good HDL cholesterol. You should also consider these health tips:

Get serious about your diet. Lose weight for good. Exercise is crucial. Try to get in a good hour-long walk each day. Get a least eight hours of sleep each night. Dont get into Add cholesterol-lowering foods to you diet. Fiber-rich foods,

sleep debt.

oatmeal, almonds and fish (at least once or twice a week) are all good. Also, plant sterols, flaxseed, organic grape juice, apples and other foods that contain pectin can help. A good vitamin and mineral regimen will greatly improve cardiovascular protocol. Vitamin C to bowel tolerance-titrate, up to a range of 5,000 to 10,000 mg per day. Collatrim three capsules three times per day to prevent plaque formation. Niacin (B3) one capsule at lunch and two capsules at bedtime. Gradually increase based upon risk assessment to decrease production of Lp. CoQ10 100 mg twice per day to strengthen the heart muscle. Magnesium complex two capsules three times per day, reduce to bowel tolerance if necessary. A natural balancer to help the body regulate cholesterol needs and demands for repair. As a male a little ahead of the baby boomers (I turn 70 this year), I have been taking better care of myself these last couple of years. However, we all have room for improvement. I need to get on an exercise schedule and lose some additional weight. Everyone needs to have goals and something to look forward to. In my case, its getting into some smaller clothes and being able to look and feel like I did a few years ago. What is your goal in the health arena this year?

Yes, you can control your appetite!

By Marcia K. Simler, CNHP

ood addictions are overwhelming habits that can destroy our health and steal our self-worth through constant feelings of guilt and defeat. Overeating can cause us to gain weight, which may make us feel unattractive and can even keep us from fulfilling our dreams and

desires. Would you like to go through life without being lured by physically harmful and fattening foods? You can! People can be addicted to cigarettes (due to the displacement in the brain from niacin and nicotine, causing the addiction), alcohol, caffeine and sugar one of

the hardest addictions to overcome. In order to address such an issue, we must first admit to ourselves that we are addicted to something. If you continually eat something while consciously knowing it is compromising your health, you are probably addicted. If you arent sure you have an addiction, ask yourself if you can get along without a certain food, alcohol, caffeine or sugar within a three-day period. To help overcome your addiction, you may need support. Supplements that regulate blood sugar, such as chromium, licorice root, vanadium, nopal extract and others, can help you through the craving stage. Also, extra protein found in meat, fish, nut butters, eggs or protein drinks is a fantastic solution, as it fills you up while keeping your blood sugar level steady. If you eat sugar, or such things as white breads, flour or pasta, when digested it turns to starch and then to sugar, leaving you wanting more and more. So, when your brain says, I want something sweet, like a brownie, fight back with almond butter on celery or some fresh green juices. My favorite is cucumber, celery, green apple, cilantro and spinach. You can add a pinch of sea salt, cayenne pepper, turmeric or ginger to spice it up. By

incorporating mega nutrients or proteins into your diet, you will be satisfied easily. Another addiction buster is fiber. Fiber slows down the digestive system as it absorbs fats and sugars, and consequently our blood sugar levels remain steady. Fruits and vegetables, along with powdered fiber or oatmeal, will help with your fiber intake during the day. To cut down on alcohol, switch to wine, or better yet, wine with seltzer water that you can sip on instead of guzzling down several drinks that leave you dehydrated. Your body needs clean, pure water instead at least half your weight in ounces every day actually! To help the cravings of cigarettes, use niacin tablets at each craving to displace the nicotine back to niacin. Also, take vitamin B complex for your nervous system and vitamin E to oxygenate your cells. Lastly, consider the supplement goldenseal to melt the old tar off your lungs. Caffeine addition causes calcium deficiencies and adds more chemicals to your body. Switch your coffee drinks to non-caffeinated teas (herbal) or coffee substitutes like barley, for example. I urge you to select some tasty substitutes and end those cravings for good! We at Natural Health Works can help you identify which of the above recommendations will help you with your addictions or weak tendencies.

Get shakin to relieve stress! continued from page 34

modern adults, we may have learned to turn off this brilliant healing mechanism. Now, you can learn to turn it back on. 2. Shaking is great exercise! Paula, an elementary school teacher, usually exercises in the morning before work. But shes found that on the mornings when she is short for time, shaking is perfect. Five minutes of shaking and she feels awake, energized, relaxed and alert. Shaking can be aerobic, strengthening and improve balance. It loosens joints, increases flexibility, burns calories and raises metabolism.
3. Shaking releases you from the bondage of being too adult-like. Shake off your adultness and let

yourself reclaim the free, spontaneous, childlike pleasure of feeling alive in your body. 4. Shaking lets you feel ridiculous and silly! And thats a good thing! Taking yourself too seriously is dangerous. 5. Shaking releases pain. Pain is often caused by tension, and tension always increases pain. My client, Cindy, suffered from restless leg syndrome for years and had tried numerous medications, with little benefit. Shaking helped her tremendously. Lying on her back before bedtime with her legs in the air, she shook, kicked and imagined tension leaving her body. Doing this relieved her discomfort and allowed her to sleep better than she had in years. 6. Shaking helps you to relax. Relaxation is difficult when your body is tense. Relaxation is easier and deeper when you allow your body to shake off tension. Ease and healing then flow more naturally. 7. Shaking clears away energy blocks. A healthy body-mind is one in which the energy, chi or prana is a free-flowing river. In the same way debris often gets stuck in a stream, we get stuck areas in our bodies and our energy river cannot flow. Shaking releases the debris and allows the energy river to flow freely so you can move, think and live more fully.
