How Andy met Opies Mother

Please join us for the Friends of Rowan Public Library Annual meeting at RPL Headquarters in Salisbury on Thursday, April 11 at 7:00 pm. The program is free and all are welcome. The library is closed, so please enter at the Fisher Street entrance near the Henderson Law Office. Dr. Gary R. Freeze will be describing the fateful and fanciful day in 1952 when everything converged to make Andy Taylor thrice a hero. Using snippets of real anecdotes from the well-known Andy Griffith Show, Gary will take us on a stormy and romantic jaunt into Kelseys Woods, help us find out how Andy met the Apricot Queen, wooed her in the midst of Ernest T. Bass induced chaos, and before the day was over, saved Mayberry from calamity. It was the biggest event in local history since Andy ran back the fumble to beat Mt. Pilot High in 1944, and it would not be matched until Andy saved the Founders Oak from a case of Hollywood reality in 1962. In the process you will learn about Barneys great desire to be left to the Beavers, find out what Cheerwine had to do with it all and, most of all, finally understand how Opie got that red hair. Its all part of a forthcoming book, Why Andy Didnt Carry A Gun: The Hidden History of Mayberry. Dr. Freeze teaches American history at Catawba College and is currently at work on a major exhibition for the Mt. Airy Museum of Regional History.
