NAME____________________________DATE________PERIOD__

WORKSHEET - NOT-SO-SIMPLE HARMONIC MOTION

1. THE FOX PROBLEM: Naturalists find that the populations of some kinds of predatory animals vary periodically. Assume that the population of foxes in a certain forest varies sinusoidally (sine or cosine) with time. Records started being kept at time t = 0. A minimum of 200 foxes occurred when t = 2.9 years. The next maximum, 800 foxes, occurred at t = 5.1 years.

Make a sketch of the number of foxes as a function of time.

a) Write an equation expressing the number of foxes as a function of time. ____________________________________________ b) Predict the population when t = 7. ____________________

c) Foxes are declared to be endangered species when their population drops below 300. Between which two non-negative values of t were foxes first endangered? ___________________

2.SUNSPOT PROBLEM: For several hundred years, astronomers have kept track of the number of solar flares, or sunspots, which occur on the surface of the Sun. The number of sunspots counted in a given year varies periodically from a minimum of about 10 per year to a maximum of 110 per year. Between the maximums that occurred in the years 1750 and 1948, there were 18 complete cycles.
Remember!

a) What is the period of the sunspots?_____________ b) What is the amplitude for the curve ?______________________ c) Make a sketch of the curve.

d) Write an equation for the function using 1948 for the horizontal shift. ___________________________________

e) How many sunspots would you expect in the year 1998?_________ 2000?________

3. TEMPERATURE PROBLEM: The average monthly temperatures do not vary much from year to year since each data point represents temperatures collected over many years. In other words, the data will be periodic. The greatest monthly temperature in Denver, Colorado is 73.5 F in July (t = 7), while the lowest occurs in January (t = 1) at 29.7 F.

a) Make a sketch of the temperature as a function of the time in months.

b) Write an equation of the function: ___________________________ c) Compare the monthly temperatures from the model with the actual monthly temperatures in the chart below. Month February May October Model Average Temp. Actual Average Temp. 33.4 57.2 51.4

Write two equations for each trig graph. a) Using sine and b) Using cosine. 4.
