Message Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, Inc.
Today is a markedly special occasion – one, which I hope will presage many more events like
this in the coming years.

Dance, like music, is an expression uniquely individual and expressive. It is able to convey
the range of emotions that defines each one of us, no matter our situation in life, our physical limitations regardless.
Dance permits us to give vent to what we feel. It allows us to soar without wings and demonstrates our capacity to
appreciate LIFE itself. Dance empowers us.

TWH's Dance on Wheels may have started out in the 1990s as a form of therapy for emotional rehabilitation
and acceptance. But it has since brought not only solace and a source of comfort to those who need it, but a
deeper appreciation of one's graceful abilities, a sense of belonging among one's own peers.

To this end, may I take this opportunity in behalf of the Board of Directors of Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, to
commend the efforts of the organizers of this endeavor and thank all of our special guests, sponsors and
participants who have taken part, share their talent and gift of dance in our Ballroom Dancing/ Dance Sport for
Persons with Disability. It is our dream to one day send a Filipino delegation to international dance competitions
where we hope and expect to shine the brightest.

For persons with disability, may we strive to make the most of what is left of us and
continue to inspire others through our self-worth, for the glory to our Creator.

We wish to extend our sincere congratulations to Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, (TWHI)

Inc., the Professional Dance Teachers Association (PDTA) of the Philippine and the
Philippine Sports Association for the Differently Abled Dance Sport for Persons with
Disabilities for organizing the launching of Dance Sport for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

Your continuous efforts to promote sports development for persons with disabilities are
indeed laudable. Through the competition, you help promote their right to fully participate in
the building of a strong and healthy citizenry.

This worthwhile endeavor reflects the government’s adherence and support for the United Nation Convention on the
Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN-CRPD) which enables persons with disabilities to join mainstream and disability-
specific sports to further enrich society.

We fervently hope that the competition will enhance public awareneness and consciousness on the capabilities and
unique giftedness of persons with disabilities.

May this event help us to see persons with disabilities as equals and partners for development.

As we put on our dancing shoes for this competition, we wish you all the best in your future undertakings.

Godspeed and more power!

Message

In behalf of the Philippine Sports Association for the Differently Abled, National Paralympic Committee of the
Philippines (PHILSPADA-NPC Phils.), I am pleased to congratulate the organizers and participants of the “Steps for a Bright Future,
Part II”, a ballroom dancing event.

As we are the recognized governing body for disabled sports by the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic
Committee, as well as an accredited member of the International Paralympic Committee, we are looking forward to the development and
advancement of Wheelchair Dance Sport in our country.

Wheelchair dancing has existed for more than twenty years now and is gaining more popularity in all parts of the world, we am glad
that here in the Philippines, Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, Inc. has taken the initiative to restore the interest of Filipinos with disabilities in
wheelchair dancing not only for recreation but as a sport too.

We believe that sport is an ideal means in promoting the integration of persons with disabilities (PWD) into mainstream society. Sports
help instill important values such team work, discipline and perseverance thereby strengthening a person's competitive spirit leading to the
heightening of one's confidence and self esteem preparing them to face the day to day challenges of life.

Let us, therefore, continue to work closely together in improving the plight of Filipinos with
disabilities through sport.

God bless and Godspeed.

PHILSPADA

It is with the greatest pleasure that I send my greetings and

best wishes to all participants of the Steps for a Bright Future-Ballroom Dancing/
Dance Sport.

I am proud to be able to lend the support of the Professional Dance Teachers Association
of the Philippines (PDTA) to your organization which I am sure will be a great success.

I would also like to take this opportunity to express my thanks for the support and generosity that
you have given to all the participants.

Best wishes.

Warmest greetings and congratulations to the officers and members

of Tahanang Walang Hagdanan on the occasion of its First Philippine
Wheelchair Ballroom Dancing Championship and Launching of the
Wheelchair Dance Sport.

We commend the various associations involved in the project for

their unselfish support towards empowering the capabilities of persons
with disability (PWDs), a priority of TWH.

And as Christmas draws near, we take the opportunity to wish everyone the best of the Holidays
and the continued success of TWH in all its endeavors in the coming years.

Empowering your members to become to become self-reliant and productive

members of ballroom dancing is a fantastic means of “Disabling” disability.

Dance is a powerful language that can break down the social barriers that exist
between people with disabilities and the able bodied world because it is one activity
that crosses the boundaries of age, gender and physical ability.

Through dance, one can become imaginative, creative and make one’s spirit soar
regardless of physical challenges.

Life is not over just because one is in a wheelchair because people with disabilities can do beautiful things by any
standard.

We, at PDTA are one in carrying out the vision and mission of the Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, Inc. (TWHI) in
equipping the disabled with skills in enhancing their capabilities.

I wish to congratulate the directors and officers of the Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, Inc. the organizers of Steps
for a Bright Future II, First Philippine Wheelchair Ballroom Dancing Championship and the Launching of Wheelchair
Dance Sport.

May you have many more projects ahead of you.

Sport.

In behalf of the Dance Sport Council of the Philippine, I would like to congratulate the organizers
of this event, lead by Mr. Noli Agcaoili for this first time ever championship. I know this is not the last
and we look forward to working hand in hand with you.

One of our objectives is to reach out to other private groups to support us in our aim to promote
Dance Sport all over the country and this occasion is helping us towards attaining our goals.

Again, let me reiterate my sincerest thanks for propagating Dance Sport through
your activities. More power to you and God bless.

Mabuhay!

I wish to congratulate the officers and members of the Tahanang

Walang Hagdanan, Inc. (TWHI) for spearheading this year’s “Steps
for a Bright Future II”, First Philippine Wheelchair Ballroom Dancing
Championship and Launching of Wheelchair Dance Sport.

It is indeed an honor for me and the Professional Dance Teachers

Association of the Philippines (PDTA) in tandem with the organizers
that provided the venue to teach ballroom dancing and awaken the
passion for dancing enhancing the capabilities of persons with
disabilities.
I believe, it is through dancing that one can express it’s innate creativity, and imagination inspite
of certain limitations but it will not stop here.... as dancing is an expression of one’s achievement
and fulfillment.

To all the participants and competitors, good luck and may you continue to inspire us with your
beautiful dancing.

More Power and Keep on Dancing!

Project
Concept
BACKGROUND/RATIONALE

Founded in 1973, Tahanang Walang Hagdanan Inc. (TWHI) is geared to empower

persons with disabilities ( PWD's) through its various programs and services so they
could become self-reliant and productive members of the society. One main program of
TWHI is education which is basic and very essential in uplifting the lives of our beneficiaries.
We also have other programs like recreation and sports development that boost their self-
confidence and enhance their capabilities.

We have launched the first ballroom dancing for PWDs last November 17, 2007 which featured the TWH Dance
on Wheels and participated by the Communication Society and Physical Education Department of St.
Scholastica's
College, as well as, highly respected dance guru, Ms. Maribeth Bicharra. This caught the attention of many
including TV programs like: GMA 7's -Pinoy Records, Unang Hirit and 24 Oras; T.V Patrol of ABS-CBN-2; and Kid's
Sport of Channel 23.

Proceeds of this project go to the center's educational and sports development programs. The
Educational Program which administers to 140 scholars, includes for PWDs, integrated SPED class or Special
Education and regular education for high school and college. This program is also open to children and relatives
of PWDs while the Sports Development Program which administers to more or less 50 athletes, provides for
athletes' training, sports materials, transportation and other needs. As we continue this project, we believe
that it would open more avenues for PWDs for their further development and through this we intend to
venture to Dance Sport for them. The implementation of this second event, is ardently proposed as we
encourage support and partnership for this noble project.

DANCE SPORT and TWH DANCE ON WHEELS

Dance sport is a modern form of ballroom dancing combining the area of exercise with social skills. All over the
world, people of all ages are looking for a way to get in shape, increase energy and look great as they learn the
social graces. Dance sport is truly a socially interactive activity that brings that special pleasure of moving to
music with a partner but also adds an activity with merit in the aerobic arena.

TWH Dance on Wheels started in 1990's, as a form of therapy for emotional rehabilitation especially for our
residents/workers who could not accept their physical disability. The first group of dancers initially tried the
easy steps of folk dancing. It was in 1999 when they did ballroom dancing which was more challenging and
attracted more dancers to participate. It was only last year when we organized our event that we became
serious about it. Our Dance on Wheels is usually done singly or with a combination of dancers: able-bodied
partner with PWD; both PWDs partnering with each other; and by group comprised of able-bodied dancers
and PWDs dancing in different formation or free performances. This dance is at par with the standard
dancing of waltz, tango, cha-cha, rumba, etc., in the unique movement of wheelchair dancing together
with the movement of the dancers' upper extremities further emphasized by their grace and facial
expression.

Pioneering in the advocacy for PWDs, TWHI takes pride in continuing this project for our
beneficiaries. It gives healing and therapy, as well as, develops capabilities, making
the most of what is left of PWDs. Their ability for dance sport is promising as
our dancers are being prepared for further training for local and
international competition
