Exercise 1 Determining the Placement of Domain Controllers Using Active Directory Sizer
In this exercise, you will input information from the scenario into Active Directory Sizer to determine how many domain controllers, global catalog servers, and preferred bridgehead servers to place at each Northwind Traders site. Task 1

! Open a new project in Active Directory Sizer, and then specify the
required information 1. Log on as Nwtradersx\ComputerNameUser (where ComputerName is the name of the computer you are working on) with a password of P@ssw0rd 2. If you have not already installed Active Directory Sizer, install it now. a. Click Start, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as. b. In the Run As dialog box, click The following user, type a user name of Nwtradersx\Administrator and a password of P@ssw0rd and then click OK. c. At the command prompt, type \\London\Setup\Adsizer\Setup.exe and then press ENTER. d. Follow the prompts that the setup program presents to complete the installation. 3. Use Run as to start Active Directory Sizer as Nwtradersx\Administrator with a password of P@ssw0rd 4. In the Active Directory Sizer dialog box, click File, and then click New. 5. When prompted, use the information provided in the scenario to complete the wizard. 6. Click Finish. In the console tree, under Domain Configuration, the domain corp.nwtraders.msft appears. In the console tree, under Site Configuration, the default site named Default-First-Site appears.

Task 2

! Create three sites in Active Directory Sizer


1. In the console tree, right-click Site Configuration, and then click Add Site. 2. In the New Site dialog box, in the Site Name box, type the name of one of the sites for corp.nwtraders.msft, and then click Apply. 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the other two sites, and then click OK. Three new sites appear in the console tree. All users are still in the DefaultFirst-Site.

Task 3

! Distribute users to the sites that you just created


1. In the console tree, right-click Default-First-Site, and then click Distribute Users. 2. In the Distribute Users dialog box, in the Source Site list, click DefaultFirst-Site. 3. In the Users to Move box, type the number of users that you will move to the new site. 4. Under Destination Site, click the site that you will move the users to, and then click Apply. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 until all users have been moved from DefaultFirst-Site, and then click OK.

! View the site report in Active Directory Sizer


1. In the console tree, under Domain Configuration, click corp.nwtraders.msft. 2. After you answer the questions below, close Active Directory Sizer. The site report appears in the details pane. It specifies the recommended distribution of domain controllers, bridgehead servers, and global catalogs by site. How many domain controllers, bridgehead servers, and global catalogs does Active Directory Sizer recommend for the Chicago site? Active Directory Sizer recommends one bridgehead server for the Chicago Site. How many domain controllers will you recommend for the Chicago site? Answers will vary. However, because of the critical nature of operations at the Chicago site, at least two domain controllers are recommended to provide fault tolerance.

Exercise 2 Enabling Universal Group Membership Caching


In this exercise, you will enable universal group membership caching for a site, and specify which site will be used to refresh the cache. Task 1

LABComputerNameSite site, and configure it to be refreshed from the Default-First-Site-Name site

1. Log on as Nwtradersx\ComputerNameUser with a password of P@ssw0rd 2. Use Run as to start Active Directory Sites and Services as Nwtradersx\Administrator with a password of P@ssw0rd 3. In the console tree, browse to LABComputerNameSite. 4. In the details pane, right-click NTDS Site Settings, and then click Properties. 5. In the NTDS Site Settings Properties dialog box, select the Enable Universal Group Membership Caching check box. 6. In the Refresh cache from drop-down list box, click Default-First-SiteName, and then click OK. 7. Close Active Directory Sites and Services.
