DIARY DATES APRIL 4th Ride/Walk to school day Yr 1/2 Classs local excursion Reception Classs local excursion

As part of our self-review process, this week at our staff meeting we analysed our attendance data for the first nine weeks of this term. We took particular notice of our absences and discussed the impact this has on our students to achieve to the best of their ability. I believe that we can have the best teachers, the best curriculum programs and the best facilities available, but if we dont have students at school, how can we achieve continuous improvement for every child? As a school community we are asking all parents and caregivers to seriously consider your childrens absence. I believe together we can reduce the absences by: As a school -Developing two attendance policies, one to suit the Primary and one for Secondary years. -Increasing follow up with parents as to reasons for student absences. -Having dialogue with students around the importance of attending and the impact this can have on their learning. As a parent/caregiver -Sending a note or phoning the school when a child has been ill. -Ensuring when a child misses school due to family reasons that the reasons are substantial. -Applying for an exemption for extended family reasons. -Informing teachers/leadership if there are school issues preventing your child attending.

YOUR SUPPORT IS MY STRENGTH Dear Parents and Caregivers, Wow! I just can't believe I have been at YAS for 7 years. I truly am enjoying my time here and I still have that strong passion for teaching and learning. I thoroughly enjoy my Coordinator position in the Primary Years. It is such an enjoyable and rewarding experience. I would like to take this opportunity to thank parents and caregivers for supporting their children in learning Indonesian. As you may or may not be aware, learning a language has a huge impact on children's learning and there is strong evidence to support this. The new Australian Curriculum further supports children learning languages, and our engagement with Asia. This term the students have been learning about school life in Indonesia and basic language surrounding the topic of school 'sekolah'. I would appreciate you having discussions with your children about Indonesian lessons, which will further reinforce their understanding. I would also like to thank the teachers and staff at YAS for making Indonesian a part of their classrooms and positive conversations. Again, your support is forever appreciated and helps strengthen your child's learning. Terima Kasih Bu Kelly.

Yankalilla Sports Day: Friday 12th April

Our annual Sports Day is rapidly approaching with the various house teams already meeting to plan their assault on the Number One ranking. We had another very successful Sports Day towards the end of last year and congratulations must go to Barker for their first and well deserved win in quite a long time. It was great to see so many children active, competing and having a lot of fun. The house rivalry is certainly STURT alive and well. A question comes up every year though about what makes a successful Sports Day. For us it is about the very thing mentioned above-fun, participation and the healthy competitive spirit that it generates. It teaches us how to win and lose gracefully. It teaches us that competing and having a go is what is really important. By having the format we have, each and every child in our school gets to contribute to their House and gets to be part of the team. All 354 of them. Each R-2 child gets

FLINDERS LIGHT

to participate in at least ten events in the tabloid section, the sprints and the distance run. Our Years 3 -12 students get to participate in 8 tabloid events plus the distance run. Then in year levels, our two best sprinters for each house, participate in the sprints. Of course we then have the relays and team games. Lots of activity, shared by everyone! We have had some criticism that perhaps we should return to a more traditional Sports Day. Interestingly, we do participate in two traditional athletics days each year. One for SAPSASA (Primary Schools) and one for SSASI (Secondary Schools). In fact, our students are currently training for SANTOS during their PE lessons and lunch time sessions. The team will be selected on BARKER merit and on the students desire to participate. Other opportunities for our more elite athletes during the year include, SAPSASA Cross Country, Swimming, Football and Netball. Knockout Cricket, Football and Basketball also occur at SAPSASA and SSASI levels. All of these events only occur with the necessary numbers and interest from our student body. Our current format is designed as an opportunity to engage the whole school in a day of fun, competition and activity and our students seem to agree that this is a preferred option. So please come and join us on the day and support your child.

Healthy Drinks
Did you know that a 250ml glass of apple juice or cola contains not one but six teaspoons of sugar? Having just one can of soft drink per day adds up to 18 kilograms of sugar in a year! Juice and sweet drinks are not good for kids because the energy they contain enters kids bodies undetected. They end up consuming more energy than they need, placing them at risk of unhealthy weight gain. Sweet drinks are also bad for teeth. Even a glass of unsweetened orange juice contains four teaspoons of sugar. We often mistakenly give kids juice thinking that that they need Vitamin C. Fruit juices contain more Vitamin C than kids need. Eating half an orange a day will give kids all the Vitamin C they need plus some fibre. Because it has no added flavours, colours, sugar or energy, water is the best way for kids to quench their thirst. Milk is also a great, nutritious drink for kids. Try keeping a jug of water in the fridge and packing water bottles when you go out. If there are no sweet drinks in the fridge, kids will soon turn to water. If you serve sweetened drinks as a treat, water them down or use smaller glasses.

Spiny Leaf Insects

(Extatosoma Tiaratum) They make very easy care pets and are inexpensive to keep. These amazing insects moult 5 or so times doubling in size until they are about 15cms long. They only require fresh gum leaves, a spray of water, and an enclosure to keep them safe. They have extraordinary camouflage as they resemble dead leaves and often sway from side to side when they feel a breeze. These harmless insects are happy to be gently handled and will climb over you. I currently have sizes ranging from 2cm to 5cm long.
