Blasted 300 at Holiday Bowl
ALLEN PARK, Mich. Scott
Norton of Mission Viejo,
Calif., defeated reigning
Professional Bowlers
Association Player of the
Year Sean Rash of
Montgomery, Ill., 219-191, to
win the Earl Anthony PBA
Players Championship at
Thunderbowl Lanes for his
third career title and second
of the 2012-13 season.
The Anthony PBA Players
Championship finals aired on
ESPN.
Back-to-back unconverted 4-
9 and 4-6-7 splits in the fifth
and sixth frames put Rash in
a 35-pin hole. He rebounded
with a string of three strikes,
but Norton continued to fill frames to maintain the
lead. When Rash failed to strike in the 10th, Norton
only needed seven pins in his 10th frame and the
California left-hander threw three strikes to seal the
victory.
I knew Earl Anthony when I was a kid. My mother
(womens professional hall of famer Virginia Norton)
bowled on tour at about the same time, so I got to
know him, Norton said. To win the tournament
named in his honor is really special.
I thought it was a lot to get one title in a year, let alone
two, Norton added. I dont
even have the words. I knew
I was throwing the ball well.
I knew I was in a good place
mentally. Last year I knew
what it took to win, but this
year, I just decided Im out
here because I love to bowl
and compete, and for no
other reason.
Norton was frustrated that
he was unable to put the
match away early, given
opportunities by Rash, but
he said he has new-found
confidence that he can ulti-
mately get the job done.
Every time (Rash) gave me
an opening, I couldnt close
the door, he said, but I
have a little more determination now than Ive had in
the past. Every time Im on that big stage, I know what
I need to do.
Norton, a practicing attorney when he isnt bowling on
Tour, knows its very early to start thinking about the
PBA Player of the Year race, but moving into a tie with
Mika Koivuniemi as the only two-time winners so far
in 2012-13 at least puts him in the conversations.
If I win POY thats great, he said. Thats everyones
goal, but I can only do what I can do and the rest isnt
up to me.

Scott Norton Wins Earl Anthony PBA Players Championship
By Bill Vint - PBA
ALLEN PARK, Mich. L.A. X, a team of
Professional Bowlers Association stars owned
by Los Angeles Clippers all-star guard Chris
Paul, struck on seven of its first eight shots to
build an insurmountable lead over the top qual-
ifiers, Terrell Owens Dallas Strikers, to win the
PBA League Anthony round, 257-214, but it
wasnt enough to earn the team a berth in the
PBA League Elias Cup finals.
L.A.X made its ESPN debut in the fifth and
final qualifying round of PBA League competi-
tion, but missed the Elias Cup finals by two points.
It was a game of near misses for us all
week, L.A. X franchise player Jason
Belmonte said. We felt like there was always
one game that seemed to get away from us,
even in qualifying. The same thing was hap-
pening to us in the Clash eliminator rounds.
Im always the optimist, so I figured if we
got on the main show, wed take it and today
we did. The guys bowled awesome. Im really
proud of them, he added. We moved up to
fifth in the Elias Cup standings, but we still
missed the finals. It was another near miss.
L.A. X advanced to the Anthony round finals
with a 207-206 victory over Chris Hardwicks
Silver Lake Atom Splitters. After L.A. Xs
Dave Wodka missed a 10 pin in the eighth
frame to give Silver Lake a 10-pin lead,
Belmonte struck in the ninth and anchor Parker
Bohn III threw three strikes in the 10th frame to
put L.A. X back in front. Needing three strikes
in his 10th frame to win by one pin, Silver
Lakes Chris Barnes threw two strikes, but left
the 4-7 standing on his final shot. The Atom
Splitters needed to win the Anthony round to
advance to the Elias Cup finals by two points
over the Dallas Strikers.
In the opening team match, Silver Lake was
nearly perfect in running away with a 279-215
victory over Jerome Bettis Motown Muscle.
The only flaw in Silver Lakes 11-strike per-
formance was a 10 pin left by Dom Barrett in
the fourth frame, which he converted.
The New York City WTT KingPins, owned
by womens sports legend Billie Jean King,
earned the top stepladder berth for the PBA
League Elias Cup finals by winning two quali-
fying rounds during the PBA Detroit Winter
Swing and compiling 45 points to out-distance
Jerome Bettis Motown Muscle by seven points.
The BROOKLYN STyLES, owned by actor
Jesse Williams, captured the No. 3 berth in the
Elias Cup finals thanks to their win in the open-
ing round. The STyLES will meet the Dallas
Strikers in the Elias Cup opening match. Dallas
claimed the final berth in the finals thanks to its
second-place finish in the Anthony round.
The Elias Cup finals will air on ESPN
Sunday, April 7, at 1 p.m. ET.

HACKENSACK, NJ - The high
school bowling season has ended and
although the Passaic County, N. J.
bowlers already know who earned all-
county status, the deserving young
Bergen County keglers await to learn
whether they too will be blessed with
all-county recognition. Two such
bowlers are Hackensack senior Rob
Gilbert, Jr and Glen Rock junior Jake
Rollins, both of whom will likely earn
Bergen first team stardom. Neither of
them disappointed the spectators
present for the Stan Niemiec Youth
Travel session at Bowler City.
Rob garnered Bowler of the Week
honors for scoring a stellar triple
deuce 249-237-214: 700 in leading
Bowler City I to an impressive sweep
of Holiday I in a position encounter.
Also sharp for BC I were Dumont
junior Ryan Perez who followed up
last weeks 632 set with 223-207: 613
and Vin Santoro 215-207: 590. Best
scores for a struggling Holiday quar-
tet were Graham Mulligan 191,
Dillon Cilento 186, Nick Cilento 186
and Lilly Sigona 173. Meanwhile,
Jake Rollins came charging from the
gate with a six-bagger before settling
for 257 which he followed with 190-
237 for a 684 threesome as he and
Matt Myers 213-204-196: 613 pow-
ered Fair Lawn to a 2702-2587 tri-
umph over Boonton; Fair Lawn also
benefited from Hunter Perrys 192
and Tyler Nappis 188; leading
Boontons squad were the thunder-
ing trio: Justin Puchalski 224-211:
618, Karl Kattermann 233: 603 and
Patrick Teshima 214.
In other position round play, Bowler
City II clashed in a tight contest with
Bowler City III which earned three
points, 2536-2529 behind Patrick
Sucero 204 and his supporting cast of
over average achievers: Tiffany
Sucero 169, Arielle Wallace 163 and
Louis Ferrante 162. Pacing BC II was
anchor lefty Justin Garcia with 242-
202-200: 644 and Welmer Paguay
203.
Montvale captured its second
straight sweep by overpowering
Bowler City IV, 2644-2514 as Katie
Didonato and Kyle Ladewig sparkled
in the finale, each with 220 while 10-
year-old Michaella had her finest set
of the season, a well-over-average
361. In his return to the lineup after a
two-week respite, Matt Russell posted
a 179. Leading scorers for BC IV
were Nick Ferrante 192, Greg Khan
173 and Caitlin Tombo 170.
Closing out the session, anchor
Kevin Macchia pounded the maples
with a triple deuce 215-216-223: 654,
Colette Malyack added a 202-230:
620 and Joe Malyack a 200-214 as
Holiday II earned seven points from
the vacancy.
