INTRODUCING LUNA SENSATION Luna fungicides, the latest innovation from Bayer CropScience, contain a new class of chemistry that will provide a unique systemic solution for exceptional protection against powdery mildew, cherry leaf spot, brown rot blossom blight and fruit rot and various post-harvest rots. Luna Sensation is EPA-registered and approved for use in cherries. LUNA SENSATION REDUCES LOSSES IN TRANSIT Luna Sensation was applied once over the top of a conventional fungicide program. Seven days later, fruit from the conventional program and the Luna Sensation treatment were harvested, packed and shipped from California to Washington State for storage (no refrigeration during shipping, which took 24 hours). Boxes were then put into cold storage and evaluated at week four (see photo). Cherries treated with Luna Sensation experienced less loss due to rots.

UNIQUE SDHI FUNGICIDE The new active ingredient in Luna - fluopyram - is not a carboxamide. Fluopyram shares the same SDHI mode of action with boscalid, fluxapyroxad and penthiopyrad, but fluopyram behaves very differently. It is uniquely in the pyramide chemical group and differs in shape and in molecular flexibility from other SDHI fungicides. Luna/fluopyram continues to control boscalid-resistant isolates. For resistance management, Bayer CropScience recommends that Luna Sensation not be rotated with other Group 7 (SDHI) or Group 11 (QoI) products. Protectant fungicides may be added for additional prevention of fungicide resistance. CURRENT RESEARCH EXTENDED CHERRY LEAF SPOT CONTROL A large demonstration plot trial was established using commercial equipment in Michigan on Dwarf Cherry cv. Montmorency in 2010. Luna Sensation was compared with a grower-standard program of Gem and Indar. Six weeks after the last Luna Sensation application, defoliation was rated. Luna Sensation-treated cherry trees had only 5% leaf loss due to cherry leaf spot, while the grower-standard program trees had 20% defoliation.

POWDERY MILDEW CONTROL In 2010, a powdery mildew trial was conducted on Bing sweet cherry trees by Dr. Jay Pscheidt and John Bassinette of OSU in Corvallis, OR. Six applications were made from start of petal fall to preharvest.
MRL TIMELINE Luna Sensation is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is approved for sale. Bayer CropScience is establishing Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) in export countries. All established MRLs are posted on the USDA Foreign Agriculture Service Web site. This information will be kept current as the final MRLs are received. For MRL updates, go to www.mrldatabase.com.
