Hufflepuff doubleknitted bag Plus charts for the rest of the houses By Knitting By Kaae _____________________________________________________

Designed by: Knitting By Kaae The Gryffindor and Ravenclaw charts were created by Ann Kingstone. Finished Measurements: About 30 x 20 cm. This is approximate, and will vary according to how much you felt the bag. Materials: 100% lambswool I have used 200g of Peterhead. (50g = 275 m) Colour way: Black and yellow. Needles: 4 mm extra long needles Gauge: Not important, just do not knit too firm a fabric. Pattern stitches: All stitches are knit or purl as in doubleknitting. In each row the stitches of the side facing you are knitted, and the stitches of the other side are purled. The charts for the patterns show the colour changes for the outside of the bag (the right side). When knitting on the right side you will knit each colour as the chart says. When knitting on the wrong side, you will knit what is Yellow on the chart in Black, and what is Black on the chart in Yellow. For help with terms and techniques I recommend: www.knittinghelp.com

Cast on: When you cast on for a doubleknit, you need to cast on with both the yarns you are going to knit with. Cast on as normal with the two yarns, changing yarns for each stitch. For the bag you will need to cast on 81 stitches Starting your Doubleknit: IMPORTANT: The first two stitches and the last two stitches from the cast on form the base of the selvedge. On the first row slip the first two stitches knit-wise together as if they were one stitch. Follow the chart for the remainder of the row, knitting the right side stitches in the colour

Remember to reverse the colours shown in the chart for the rest of the stitches on the wrongside rows. Knit through the chart twice, starting the repeat with the 11th row from the top of the chart. Omit the last 25 rows on the chart when working the repeat, instead knitting the top 10 rows of the chart at this point. Bind off after the last of these rows.

indicated on the chart, and purling the wrong side stitches in the other colour, until the last two stitches. Purl these together with both yarns, using the two strands together as if they are one yarn. Now turn your work, and knit the wrong side. Slip the first stitch (the stitch purled with both yarns at the end of the last row) knitwise,

then follow the chart until the last two stitches (the two that were slipped at the beginning of the last row). Purl these together as one stitch. In all subsequent rows slip the first double-strand stitch knitwise, knit to the last double-strand stitch and purl this with both yarns held together as one.

The flap: The flap is double knitted also, using the same techniques as the rest of the bag. To make the rounded corners you must make decreases where indicated on the chart. A good tutorial for making decreases in double knitting can be found at http://www.stitchdiva.com/c ustom.aspx?id=152

Finishing Firstly weave in all loose ends, then sew the flap on. I have sewn it on wrong side towards wrong side so that the seam forms a ridge on

the outside. Next make two ridges on the bottom of the bag too by sewing along folded edges. If you look at the picture on page 2 ( the bag before felting), you can see the sewn edges in the section of knitting that will form the bottom of the bag, as well as the edge that is formed by the attachment of the flap. Remember that the bag is open at the sides. Felt your work in the Washer at 30 degrees celsius. Block gently (do not overstretch the fabric) while drying. the bags form a W, thus making two pockets for your bag. Sew the two-pocket bag into your felted bag by hand. I had metal eyelets applied by a leather-worker, who also made the leather handles for the bag. Now I have a lovely knitting bag to hold socks in progress. Enjoy

You have to make 2 small sewn bags for the inside. Mine are in black cotton cloth in the same size as the inside of the bag. When you have made the two bags sew them together at the top, so
