4.2 Aligning the Antenna

Aligning the antenna is the most important activity in the hop commissioning, and its result has a direct effect on the performance of the radio link.

Prerequisite
l

The NE commissioning of the radio equipment at both ends of the radio link must be complete.

The weather should be suitable for outdoor work. There should be no rain, snow, or fog between stations. The on-site conditions must meet the requirements for the antenna to operate at a high altitude and the personnel required to commission the antenna must be trained to work at high altitudes. The ATPC function must be disabled.

Precautions
If the radio link is configured with 1+1 protection and one antenna is used at one end, turn off the power supplies of the standby ODUs at both ends before aligning the antenna. After aligning the antenna is complete, turn on the power supplies of the standby ODUs at both ends again. If the radio link is configured with 1+1 SD and two antennas are used at one end, align the antenna as follows: 1. 2. 3. After turning off the power supplies of the standby ODUs at both ends, align the main antennas at both ends. Turn on the power supply of the standby ODU at the local end. Maintain the position of the main antenna at the remote end, and adjust the diversity antenna at the local end. Turn on the power supply of the standby ODU at the remote end. Maintain the position of the main antenna at the local end, and adjust the diversity antenna at the remote end.

If the radio link is configured with 1+1 FD and two antennas are used at one end, align the antenna as follows: 1. 2. After turning off the power supplies of the standby ODUs at both ends, align the main antennas at both ends. After turning on the power supplies of the standby ODUs at both ends, align the standby antennas at both ends.

CAUTION
Nuts or screw bolts can be used as the azimuth adjustment device and elevation adjustment device for antennas. For details, refer to the antenna installation instructions.

Procedure
Step 1 When the distance is long (more than 2 km), first position the antennas at both ends in a horizontal manner. When the distance is short, finely adjust the elevation angle as the actual situation requires. Step 2 Connect a multimeter to the RSSI port on the ODU at the local end and test the voltage value VBNC.
TIP

If you make the test line terminated with the BNC connector at one end in advance, it is more convenient to test the voltage value VBNC.

Figure 4-1 Testing the RSSI voltage by using a multimeter

Step 3 Adjust the azimuth of the antenna as follows: 1. 2. Keep the position of the remote antenna fixed. Use the multimeter to test the VBNC, and at the local end rotate the antenna widely in a horizontal manner. The range of rotating the antenna should ensure that the three peak signals of the VBNC are scanned and the central peak signal has the maximum voltage. Step 4 Adjust the elevation of the antenna as follows: 1. 2. At each VBNC voltage peak, adjust the elevation angle so that the VBNC changes to the maximum value within the scanned range. Adjust the antenna until the VBNC voltage reaches the maximum value. Tighten the local antenna. When you tighten the antenna, ensure that the VBNC voltage maintains the maximum value. Step 5 Repeat Step 2 to Step 4 to adjust the remote antenna. When the remote receive level reaches the maximum value, tighten the remote antenna. Step 6 Repeat Step 2Step 5 for two to four times to make the receive level at the local end and the remote end both reach the maximum value. Tighten the antennas at both ends. Step 7 Use the multimeter to test the VBNC voltage at both ends. Read the current receive signal level by referring to the relation curve between the VBNC of ODUs and the received signal level (RSL) at both ends.
NOTE

The curve diagram of the VBNC and RSL is put in the carton holding the ODU.

The actual receive signal level should be consistent with the specified value: The difference between the test value and the theoretical value ranges from 6 dBm to +3 dBm.
NOTE

If the VBNC cannot meet the above requirements, refer to the OptiX RTN 600 Radio Transmission System Maintenance Guide for handling.

IP address: 192.168.1.101 Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0 IP address: 192.168.1.102 Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0

Laptop computer B

Step 4 Open MS-DOS on laptop computer A and carry out the ping 192.168.1.102-n 200 -1 2000 command.
NOTE

For the working unit and the protection unit of the service that is configured with the linear MSP, West Switching Status should be both Idle.
NOTE

If any abnormal status occurs, first clear the fault and go with the test.

Step 5 Trigger the linear MSP switching by shutting down the laser. 1. 2. 3. In the Object Tree of the NE Explorer, select the board that works as the working unit of the linear MSP. In the Function Tree, choose Configuration > SDH Interface. Select By Board/Port (Path), and set Laser Switch of the service port to Close Click Apply.

In the test, the laser to be shut down should be in the working path of the service that is configured with the linear MSP.
TIP

You can also trigger the linear MSP switching by disconnecting the fibers.

Step 6 View the result of the BER test. The result should indicate that the service recovers after a transient interruption. Step 7 After the switching is complete, test the BER for 5 to 10 minutes. There should be no bit error. Step 8 Turn on the laser that was shut down in Step 5, or reconnect the optical fiber connectors that were disconnected in Step 5. Step 9 If Revertive Mode of the linear MSP is set to Revertive, test the BER again by using the BER tester. When the WTR time arrives, the test result should indicate that the service recovers after a transient interruption. WTR Time is set to 600s by default. Test the BER depending on the actual configuration.

Prerequisite
Aligning the antenna must be complete.

Precautions
l

When the 24-hour BER cannot be tested for each HOP of the link due to the restrictions of the actual conditions, choose the E1 service of the first and terminal node to perform the test. This operation can ensure that the test path covers the entire radio links. The following test procedure considers the E1 service between stations as an example. When no E1 service is configured between stations, perform the test through the configured WS service (only applicable to the SDH microwave).

Procedure
Step 1 At the opposite equipment side, extract several typical E1 services, and perform the hardware inloop of these E1 ports. When the hardware inloop fails, perform the software inloop of the E1 port using the Web LCT. Step 2 At the local equipment side, connect these E1 services serially at the DDF, and then access them to the BER tester. Figure 4-2 Serial connection of E1

Step 3 Perform the 24-hour BER test by using the BER tester. Step 4 Record the test result. It should be compliant with the design requirement. Step 5 Release the loopback and serial connection. ----End

Postrequisite
l

If the first 24-hour BER test does not meet the design requirement, find out the cause and clear the fault. Perform another 24-hour BER test until the test is passed. If the BER exceeds the nominal value in the test for a serial connection, locate the fault by using the dichotomizing search or other methods until each channel passes the 24-hour BER test independently.
