Methods of identification

Why identification?

For activity sectors involved in the design and manufacture of products (capital and consumer goods, food processing, chemical, textile industries, etc.), the market demands increasingly broader product ranges and faster renewal of these ranges. In addition to these market constraints, there are those associated with increased productivity: p p p p reduction of stocks held, improvements in quality, reduction of work in progress, reduction of delivery times.

To meet these new demands, a single tool must be capable of manufacturing a wide variety of products. Production tools must therefore be flexible and be capable of handling fast changes of production runs. To optimise production, it is in particular essential to be able to identify products being manufactured (work in progress) and to improve the management of product data flow.

Identification methods

In the past, two principal methods have been used for identifying work in progress: p The first method is to record the product in a shift register at the start of the manufacturing process and to track it by means of a series of presence detections. This solution carries with it a major risk of desynchronisation and errors. p The second method allocates a fixed code to each product. Actions to be taken are determined by consulting a database in the central processing unit. This solution has the disadvantages of a centralised architecture which can cause problems of availability, poor response times and limitations due to processing capacity.

Analysis of the limitations of these two methods has led to the development of a reliable system (to eliminate the risks of desynchronisation and errors), using distributed databases (to optimise data exchange by limiting the volume of data and enable machines to operate autonomously). This high level identification system can handle a large quantity of data. It is known as read/write identification. Its operating principle is based on attaching, to each product, a contact-free, read/write memory tag which can be accessed throughout the manufacturing process.

Inductive technology

Principle

Inductive technology is based on the use of a mid-range frequency electromagnetic signal (carrier wave) for contact-free transmission of data between two electronic devices. Data is transmitted by each of the devices alternately, by modulating the carrier wave: - modulation of power transmitted, to send data from the transmitter, - modulation of external carrier wave losses by the receiver, to return data to the transmitter. Transmission of the mid-range frequency carrier wave powers the tags which are attached to the (passive) objects to be identified. Modulation of the power transmitted at the station or of the carrier wave losses at the tag enables two-way data transmission. Advantages p p p p p No mechanical contact with the object to be identified. Two-way data exchange between the station and the tag. Precise dialogue zone. Fast data exchange rate. No power supply needed for mobile object to be identified.

Transmitter: Read/write station

Carrier wave

Receiver: Tag

Data

Composition

Database function
Data associated with the product or moving object

Internal database: - fixed code tags, - read/write tags with ferro-electric memory or EEPROM.

Operative function
Technological medium for contact-free data transmission

p Dialogue zone: area in which transmitter and receiver can exchange data. p 2 types of data exchange are possible: - data exchanges on the fly, where the number of bytes which can be exchanged depends solely on the length of time in the dialogue zone. These exchanges are generally limited to a few bytes, for example for controlling reflex actions (routing), - stationary data exchanges where a large number of bytes can be exchanged. These exchanges enable transmission of data relating to products or the process at various stages during manufacture (usually 1 to 200 bytes) p There are 5 phases in the data exchange procedure: - phase 1: carrier wave is sensed as soon as tag enters the dialogue zone, - phase 2: tag sends tag present message. - phase 3: read/write instruction is initiated, - phase 4: data is read/written, - phase 5: exchange is checked.

Control function
Interface unit handling the data exchanges

p Read/write stations: compact or with remote inductive head.

Identification concepts

Identification by fixed code

Function

Attachment of a fixed code, read-only tag to objects which are to be identified.

Advantages

p Particularly suitable for identification of zones or mobile equipment (trucks, overhead carriers, etc.) where the data does not change. p Can be used in harsh environments (grease, dust) which are unsuitable for optical identification systems.

Applications

p Identification of bins, palettes, etc. p In general, any application in which only an identification function is required.

Components

p Fixed code tag: decentralised memory, read-only tag attached to the product to be identified. p Read station (1): one-way communication device for handling data transmitted from the fixed code tag to the processor. Note: fixed code identification can also be performed using read/write tags.

Read/write stations

Read/write stations with remote inductive head

The operative and control functions are separate. The station comprises a base unit and a separate inductive head adapted to the type of tag. The station has a Uni-Telway/Modbus asynchronous serial communication link as standard. Models equipped with an optional, additional card allow communication using different protocols (Fipio, Modbus Plus, Interbus-S, Ethernet TCP/IP) or have a 2nd Uni-Telway/Modbus link. User manuals for read/write stations are available separately, see page 11.

Models equipped with an optional, additional card allow communication using different protocols (Fipio, Modbus Plus, Interbus-S) or have a 2nd Uni-Telway/Modbus link. A compact station can only be used with automated production read/write tags with a read/write time of 5ms/byte. User manuals for read/write stations are available separately, see page 11.

Tags, inductive heads and stations Direction of movement in the dialogue zone, axial offset

Pairs of cylindrical or rectangular logistic components

Direction of movement For cylindrical components, the dialogue zone is omindirectional. There is no optimum orientation between the head and tag when their sensing faces are parallel. For rectangular components, the direction of movement is indicated by a double arrow on the sensing face of the products. The dimensions of the dialogue zone are at their maximum when the arrows on the 2 products are directly opposite each other in 2 parallel planes. Axial offset Cylindrical components
